What brought you to Newport 

I have always been drawn 

to the ocean. Ever since we 

first visited the Newport area 

over 20 years ago, my wife 

and I had a dream of living 

here. Once our kids were 

off in college, we realized 

that dream by buying a 

coastal home. The air, the 

wildlife, the community, and 

the working harbor are just 

a few of the many coastal 

attributes which attracted us. 

I have always been drawn to 

the ocean. I just feel better 

when I am near a body of 

water and the shoreline of 

the Pacific is the place to be. 

I love Newport! 

This could be because I was born 

in Holland, where the ocean is an 

ever present reality in daily life. 

I just feel better when I am near 

a body of water. Just one of the 

many reasons I love Newport! 

What inspired your interest in 

Real Estate? 

I have always been fascinated 

by home ownership. I really 

can’t imagine not owning 

my home. I bought my first 

house when I was only 23. In 

fact, I moved straight from 

the converted garage in my 

parent’s home into my own 

house. Did it need work? You 

bet it did! A house is a place 

where you can dream about 

what’s possible to make your 

place a home. Looking back 

through my life, I have owned 

half a dozen homes and 

some 25 rental properties. In 

addition, I have purchased 

significant commercial 

properties on behalf of 

my prior employer. These 

experiences have given me 

a tremendously broad base 

of knowledge in real estate 

transactions. 

Have you donated any kind 

of services to the community 

organizations or charities? 

I am a life-long member of The 

Boy Scouts of America. First 

as a scout, I of course learned 

all the lessons associated with 

scouting. Later as a scout leader, 

I have been able to apply those 

lessons and impart some of that 

wisdom into the scouts I was 

guiding. I was able to leverage 

my background in high tech, 

engineering and science to 

serve as an Eagle Scout advisor 

on many technical subjects. 

I also proudly served on the 

Eagle Scout Board to evaluate 

candidate Eagle scouts. 

What advice would you give 

first time home buyers? 

I would tell first time buyers that 

the home purchasing process 

can be intimidating, but get 

people you trust who can help 

you through the process. A 

good Realtor ® is key to making 

this process as manageable as 

possible. Financing, inspections, 

title insurance and escrow are 

all alien items to a new home 

buyer. A Realtor can help you 

understand the process better 

and reduce a lot of the stress. 

Home purchasing is a process. 

Since stressing out about each 

detail can be too much for 

some folks, remember that your 

Realtor is there to help navigate 

the bumps along the way. Lastly, 

I would say that not every deal 

works, but there are other 

homes out there. And in the 

end, everyone in this industry 

wants to help you become a 

home owner. 

How do you create 

successful long term 

relationships? 

Relationships are based 

on trust. I go by the 

golden rule; treat people the 

way you’d expect to be treated. 

If you treat people in a fair, 

ethical manner and put your 

client’s interest first, you will 

earn that trust. Once you earn a 

client’s trust, work even harder 

so that you treasure it like a 

valuable gift.
