What brought you to Newport<br />

I have always been drawn<br />

to the ocean. Ever since we<br />

first visited the Newport area<br />

over 20 years ago, my wife<br />

and I had a dream of living<br />

here. Once our kids were<br />

off in college, we realized<br />

that dream by buying a<br />

coastal home. The air, the<br />

wildlife, the community, and<br />

the working harbor are just<br />

a few of the many coastal<br />

attributes which attracted us.<br />

I have always been drawn to<br />

the ocean. I just feel better<br />

when I am near a body of<br />

water and the shoreline of<br />

the Pacific is the place to be.<br />

I love Newport!<br />

This could be because I was born<br />

in Holland, where the ocean is an<br />

ever present reality in daily life.<br />

I just feel better when I am near<br />

What inspired your interest in<br />

Real Estate?<br />

I have always been fascinated<br />

by home ownership. I really<br />

can’t imagine not owning<br />

my home. I bought my first<br />

house when I was only 23. In<br />

fact, I moved straight from<br />

the converted garage in my<br />

parent’s home into my own<br />

house. Did it need work? You<br />

bet it did! A house is a place<br />

where you can dream about<br />

what’s possible to make your<br />

place a home. Looking back<br />

through my life, I have owned<br />

half a dozen homes and<br />

some 25 rental properties. In<br />

addition, I have purchased<br />

significant commercial<br />

properties on behalf of<br />

my prior employer. These<br />

experiences have given me<br />

a tremendously broad base<br />

of knowledge in real estate<br />

transactions.<br />

Have you donated any kind<br />

of services to the community<br />

organizations or charities?<br />

I am a life-long member of The<br />

Boy Scouts of America. First<br />

as a scout, I of course learned<br />

all the lessons associated with<br />

scouting. Later as a scout leader,<br />

I have been able to apply those<br />

lessons and impart some of that<br />

wisdom into the scouts I was<br />

guiding. I was able to leverage<br />

my background in high tech,<br />

engineering and science to<br />

serve as an Eagle Scout advisor<br />

on many technical subjects.<br />

I also proudly served on the<br />

Eagle Scout Board to evaluate<br />

candidate Eagle scouts.<br />

What advice would you give<br />

first time home buyers?<br />

I would tell first time buyers that<br />

the home purchasing process<br />

can be intimidating, but get<br />

people you trust who can help<br />

you through the process. A<br />

good Realtor ® is key to making<br />

this process as manageable as<br />

possible. Financing, inspections,<br />

title insurance and escrow are<br />

all alien items to a new home<br />

buyer. A Realtor can help you<br />

understand the process better<br />

and reduce a lot of the stress.<br />

Home purchasing is a process.<br />

Since stressing out about each<br />

detail can be too much for<br />

some folks, remember that your<br />

Realtor is there to help navigate<br />

the bumps along the way. Lastly,<br />

I would say that not every deal<br />

works, but there are other<br />

homes out there. And in the<br />

end, everyone in this industry<br />

wants to help you become a<br />

home owner.<br />

How do you create<br />

successful long term<br />

relationships?<br />

Relationships are based<br />

on trust. I go by the<br />

golden rule; treat people the<br />

way you’d expect to be treated.<br />

If you treat people in a fair,<br />

ethical manner and put your<br />

client’s interest first, you will<br />

earn that trust. Once you earn a<br />

client’s trust, work even harder<br />

so that you treasure it like a<br />

valuable gift.<br />
