This month WECASA in L'Eliana opens it
doors for the English speaking
makes common sense!
'MORE THAN CARE' FOR THE
ELDERLY IN VALENCIA
Dear Readers
The community spirit really is getting into action.
So in this issue we are celebrating the role of women in the
community and being grateful for their support and love to help
get things moving. We are also linking the Spring Equinox with
this issue, as it represents new light and life, new beginnings,
seeds, and path. The fact that day and night are equal on the day
of the equinox (Wednesday, 20th March 2019) represents our
own need for balance at this time.
All the Very Best,
So February is generally known as the month of “love” and all the stuff that goes with it. Valentine’s day, images
on social media, flowers gifts etc. But this is not real life its a romantic notion to celebrate a day with your
significant other. Relationships of all kinds are a lot more complicated than sometimes we perceive them to be.
It got me thinking about relationships and the complexities of having any relationship in this hectic world.
Particularly moving to a different country.
For many, Valentine’s Day probably came with lots of expectations. You were maybe expecting a card at the very
least, flowers or gifts and maybe a meal out. Yet having expectations can set us up for disappointment. Reality
often doesn’t match up to our unrealistic views.
One study found that a couple who enter relationships with positive expectations are more likely to face later
relationship disappointment than couples who enter with more realistic expectations. This is a bit of a shock
because we are constantly being told to be positive on a daily basis about everything in our lives now.

Moving abroad – an exciting
adventure or is it?
Moving abroad – its the start of an
exciting journey . Your’e starting a new
life together, your”e going to meet and
form lots of new relationships but most
importantly your going to have lots of
time for each other.
Whether you are married, in a long term
relationship or just newly together one thing is
sure your relationship will change. Moving abroad
is a huge commitment and there are huge
stressors involved in establishing an entirely new
life. For many couples, this makes them stronger
but for others, it tears them apart.
Stressors…
1. Living together – when we moved to Ibiza my
husband suddenly stopped working, he was with me in a
tiny apartment 24/7. We weren’t used to living in a small
space but also spending so much time together. It’s
important to feel independent and reestablish yourself
in a new place. Sometimes it’s too easy to become
dependent on the other person when you have no
friends.
2. Loneliness – I know we both experienced pangs of
loneliness – we missed our friends, our families and
social media didn’t help. Everyone seemed to be having
this great social life in Ibiza and we weren’t invited
because we didn’t have connections.
Ibiza 2016 a week after we arrived…
We moved to Ibiza in May 2016 and had
been together as a couple for 16 years
plus. Our dream was to start this new
amazing life. We thought it would result in
Ibiza being our “forever home”, and face
anything that this new experience would
throw at us.
I’m happy to say we did, but I think it’s
definitely helpful for you to know to how
difficult it was for both of us and it could
have turned out so very different.
3. Lack of meaningful stuff to do – its okay living on a
holiday island but there is only so much you can see and
do. It gets a bit boring sunbathing all the time. I wasn’t
prepared for how much I would miss my job ( CBT
Therapist in NHS). It was difficult to establish the role
that I was used to, so I ended up doing odd things which
were enjoyable but I felt quite worthless at times.
4. Lack of identity – it’s important to reestablish or find
what you identify with and who. I felt my identity had
been stripped away and I didn’t know who I was
anymore.

5. You might not be on the same page – suddenly
things might not be as wonderful as you thought
they were. One of you may be feeling that it was just
too big a move and want to move. Living abroad
really can put pressure on a relationship and couples
are forced to depend on each other far more in a
foreign environment, if one partner can’t be there
for the other or is not in touch with their feelings
then this can cause a serious rift.
6. Escaping things at home – We were extremely
fortunate we weren’t escaping from things at home.
Our move wasn’t to try to rebuild our relationship or
make it better. We moved to have the experience of
living in a foreign country and culture.
6. Financial worries – We suddenly went from 2
well paid jobs to living on much less money. High
rents in Ibiza didn’t help. Although our quality of life
has improved we have to be careful with our budget.
I actually see this as a positive as we now have much
less waste of food and don’t buy unnecessary stuff.
How did it all end?
We decided jointly, although it was more my husbands need to
leave Ibiza, that we would move to Valencia. Its essential to
have more than just beaches, beautiful scenery and the odd
party.
It became stifling in terms of our mental wellbeing and our
ability to do what we are passionate about, helping people.
So we have adopted an attitude ” nowhere at the moment is
permanent and we will see what happens”. This change in
attitude has given us both a new perspective. We can
actually enjoy our moments here without thinking too far
ahead.
We have certainly grown as a couple and are much more aware
of the need to be open and honest about how we feel and what
we are thinking.
If you are struggling with any of the issues discussed we are
here to help in Valencia city.
Real celebration of women cannot go
closer look at this issue, and let’s
talk about sex!

Above
LA IN THE OCEAN
KAMI
Despite the prevailing conviction
human sexuality does not begin
when we enter puberty, but much
earlier. In fact, we are sexual
beings almost from the moment of
conception - the ultrasound
images showing both male and
female foetuses perform
masturbating actions, could be
one proof of it. I dare to say that
we are sexual beings even from
the moment before our own
conception, because, well quite
simply – it was our parents’ sexy
times that created us, with the
passion and sexual energy
vibrating in those very first cells
who connected to create life.
There is, however a certain
imbalance when approaching
masculine and feminine sexuality.
Our western culture tends to
depict men as sexual predators,
always “ready” for action, whereas
the woman is much more likely to
be portrayed as something more
fragile; the one with the headache,
the one to have one of “those days” or
associations with any other ridiculous
excuse from having sex. Women are also
commonly associated with the passive
sexuality – woman is the one who receives,
whereas the man is the active part – the one
who does all the work. Those seem to be the
facts, which might represent a substantial
part of our society. But… Do facts represent
the truth? In this article, I want to explore all
facets of human sexuality, which eventually
will reveal to us, whether it is the men or the
women who are more sexual, or perhaps we
are equal?
Sexuality is one of the fundamental bricks of
our existence and it underlies virtually
everything we do. Humans are said to have
sexual impulses even in the mother’s womb,
and although some scientists do not believe
it, others keep delivering the results of their
research with the ultrasound images that
suggest fetuses deliberately touch their
genitals. In 1996 two Italian scientists
published their findings, where they
describe how a 32-week old female fetus
masturbated for a whole 20 minutes, before
she experienced what seems like an orgasm
(Source: www.independent.co.uk). There are
many more examples of this kind of
research that can be found on the internet,
about both male and female fetuses.
are also
Women
commonly
with the
associated
sexuality –
passive
is the one
woman
receives,
who
the man is
whereas
active part – the
the
who does all the
one
work.
MARCH 2019
FACE KISSING
“Masturbation in preschoolers” presents to us
the reality of self-pleasuring amongst children
as young as two years old. The authors of the
article report to us, that some toddlers may
masturbate several times a day, with no
distinction in the numbers regarding the
child’s gender. While it is true, that on some
occasions masturbation might be a result of
stress, in most cases they reassure us that it is
completely normal and therefore there is no
need to try and stop the child (or even it is
virtually impossible to eliminate masturbation
at this stage of life). Then comes the peer
exploration – who remembers how exciting it
was to play the doctor, put your hand up!
Obviously, this isn’t so much about
masturbation but rather about exploring your
own and the other kids’ bodies. It is also a
fantastic way to begin to tap into building
intimacy, boundaries and friendship. Speaking
of intimacy and relationships, it smoothly
diverts our attention from genital-based
sexuality onto a more holistic picture of “this
thing”.
About two years ago I attended a workshop
with John Hawken, an authority in the field of
Tantra and shamanic transformational work,
founder of The Paths of Transformation. The
workshop was dedicated to the Shamanic
Wheel of Sexuality. Based on the tradition of
the Medicine Wheel from Native American
tribes and the traditions of Tantra and the
Inner Alchemy from ancient East, the Shamanic
Wheel of sexuality was a 3 day intensive where
I had a chance to experience different aspects
of my own sexual nature. Traditionally, the
directions on the Wheel corresponds to the 8
cardinal directions (North, North-East, East,
South-East, etc). In the workshop, each of
those directions corresponded to one of the
aspects of human sexuality, and those are as
follows: in the North communicating with
awareness, energetic sexuality and orgasm in
the North-East, ritual in the East, community in
the South-East, innocence and playfulness in
the South, Adventure and the Edge in the
South-West, Tantric Massage in the West, and
Power Play and Conscious BDSM in the North-
West.
Unlike in the traditional Tantra,
where a lot of attention is given to the
male and female polarities, in
Hawken’s shamanic approach, the
polarities were left in the back seat.
Once more, we embraced our
sexuality from a global human
perspective, rather than dividing it
into specific genders. The workshop
was packed with practical exercises.
The wide range of all the experiences
definitely stretched my own personal
boundaries. Especially the power play
and conscious BDSM which I had seen
(and felt) from up close for the first
time in my life. But what shocked me
even more, was the discovery and
exploration of the child sexuality
(innocence and playfulness). Why do I
say it shocked me? Because it had
really opened my eyes and enabled
me to see one fundamental truth of
human relationships and of life as a whole.
Now, if you are anything like I was back then,
when I first heard: “let’s explore the child
sexuality”, you might have just thought
something like “it’s true children are innocent
and they play, but why do we mix it with
sexuality?”. As you can guess, my doubt was
soon cleared and I came to a paramount
realization regarding the foundations of
human sexuality: sexuality does not equal
having sex.
Speaking of Tantra – let’s see what this ancient
science has to teach us. If you aren’t sure what
this term actually refers to, well, in a nutshell it
is a philosophical system originating in (very)
ancient times from the region of today’s India
and Tibet. The huge system of thought we call
Tantra is a set of teachings, which traditionally
could only be passed from teacher to student.
Another way to describe Tantra is to see it as a
collection of spiritual practices, or spiritual
sciences that help us reach enlightenment,
right here, right now. Some sources suggest,
that the origins of what we understand as
Tantra date back ancient shamanic,
matriarchal societies. It was the worship of the
feminine that was at the center of those
societies, alongside deep connection to nature
and powerful rituals marking the different
stages of growth of the practitioners.
However, it is said that men and women were
equal and seen as the respective
representations of the Śiva - the essence of
consciousness and Śakti - the essence of
power.
Unlike other spiritual practices, where the
body is often deemed impure and flawed,
Tantra sees the human body as a portal to the
divine, or as a material manifestation of the
non-material divine consciousness. This means
that the sexual aspect of the human
experience is no more and no less sacred then the
other aspects. Sacred sexuality is therefore the
embodiment of this sacred union, the waving of
the two primordial forces. One cannot exist
without the other – we need both if we are to live
in balance. So why is it then that in our modern
global culture men are still considered the ones
who are more sexual, almost completely slaves to
their instincts, whereas women are more often
associated with romance and sensuality, much
less with sexual drive? A short answer to this
question is this: because women have been put to
sleep, just like the sleeping beauty.
If we stop to think about it, all the myths and
legends tell us a lot about a society that
created them. What might seem like an
innocent children’s story can also be a
reflection deeper truths. All those stories of
the princesses trapped in a tower, being put to
sleep, frozen, kidnapped by a beast, and so on,
are in fact a perfect reflection of the
relationship between the feminine and the
masculine we’ve been propagating over the
last hundreds of years (if not thousands). The
feminine is continually linked to the weak, the
passive, the one that has no control of itself,
while the masculine is identified as controlling,
doing, owning and winning. Those qualities
mirror the most immature and toxic stages of
human development and are in essence bad
news for all of us. Provided that our world is
sustained by those two interlinked primordial
forces (Siva & Shakti, Yin & Yang, masculinefeminine,
whichever you prefer), it is easy to
see now why our modern society is so crippled.
On the more positive note, however, this
realization is at the same time the main drive
for the global reawakening of the feminine
power that we are currently undergoing.
Women now attend all sorts of selfhelp
events, yoga classes and womenonly
events in great numbers. In our
community, there are many
individuals who decided to dedicate
their life to helping in re-establishing
the natural balance by helping the
women to wake up. I mentioned
earlier about the ancient rituals
marking the different rites of passage
during our lifetime that were
celebrated by the ancient peoples.
One of the most complex events that
predetermine the rest of our life is
stepping into the adolescence. For
girls, this vital life change is marked
by the first blood. And this is exactly
the title of the event that was created
for girls entering puberty here in the
Valencian Community. “First blood”
(esp. primera sangre) is a weekend
retreat organized by Adriana from
almanua.org, for all the adolescent
individuals around the age of their
first menstruation and their adult
carers.
Adriana explains, that “nowadays, in
spite of that fact that we know so
much, this special moment of a young
girl’s life is still considered a taboo, as
a little personal drama that limits us,
that hinders us and that stains us. As
parents (mothers, fathers,
grandparents or any other legal
carers), we can begin to change this
stigma and to help our daughters, and
or that we need to be willing to learn
together with them. To forget what
we think we know, and together rediscover
the magic of our cyclic
nature.
One Word: MAGICAL
in the park
Magical moments are the moments when your
heart sparkles and your eyes reflect it! WAUW
On the 17th of February Richart and I, Chris from
Authenti-C, had an amazing workshop. With a
group of lovely souls we connected in the Turia
park of Valencia for a session of slow yoga &
aurapaiting to really connect with yourself and
your body. To be fully present in the moment,
connected with yourself, nature and the people
around you in the class. The intention was to
connect our outer voice with our inner one. And
yes we did!
After a meditation where we worked on our heart
chakra , we gathered together in a circle while
Richart paited everyone’s beautiful aura. The whole
process was just marvelous, how the creation starts
and the colors representing your inner voice. We all
felt the energy flowing through our veins. A big
smile was there for everybody & a higher state of
mind. It did not matter which process you went
through or you were going through that day. The
moment we all shared these couple of hours, all our
sorrows and worries disappeared and made room
for a loving, warm gathering.
A connection from soul to soul. The combination of
the yoga and meditation with the art of the
aurapaiting was as a match made in heaven. That
day we met a lot of beautiful people, but most of all
their beautiful souls that connected with ours. For
me it felt like a privileged to have this workshop
with Richart and this wonderful group of people
who wanted to be a part of our first event. I cannot
even describe it in words how wonderful this
experience was, I would say: Let the pictures speak!
Because yes they do! Shiny happy people, like REM
once sang. You want to experience for yourself how
powerful this workshop can be, join our next one!
WHO IS ANIBIEN? We are a group of professionals from the USA, Canada, Poland and
to our adopted home and our compassion for animals.
WHAT DO WE DO? We have decided to use our respective skills to create a platform for
Hello. My name is Daisy. I am about 3 or 4 years old and have been living in a colony of cats all of my life. I used to be
afraid of people, but one day I was able to escape from a trap which severed my foot. It hurt a lot but a kind lady who
fed me gave me some antibiotics. Since then I love being with people. I like to run between their legs and to receive
rubs and I want nothing more than to have a forever home.
The good humans who feed me say that it is unsafe for me to be in the colony with a severed foot since it is harder for
me to run away or protect myself from danger. My human friends say I need an operation to cut the bone in my foot
and to be sterilized so I will not have any more babies. They will pay for me to have that as soon as I have my forever
family.

CIELITO
LINDO
You can help. Contact us - info@anibien.org
Hola. I'm Cielito Lindo, so named for my chatty and affectionate nature. I'm about 5 years old and have been surviving
on the streets since I was abandoned and lost my home. The good humans in El Carmen who feed me say that I
should find a new home, ideally with a little outside area as I am now accustomed to the outdoors, where I enjoy the
fresh air and sunshine. At the moment, I am on some medicine as things have been hard for me; I have gotten a little
skinny and rundown.
I have Calicivirus (common in street cats here, but zero risk to humans) and my immune system is weakened.
I have immunodeficienty syndrome so I need to be the only cat or live with cats who also have this syndrome. They tell
me there's a chance I could get sicker and die if I stay out here on the streets. As an ex-domestic, I do love being
around humans, especially when they rub me and scratch my chin. I really am a sociable soul and get along well with
other cats, too. I just need a forever home where I will be safe and recover to my most healthy self.
My name is Bella Luna and I am about one year old. I
was pregnant through no fault of my own and I guess my
humans did not want to take care of me. That's OK. I am
now being loved and looking for my forever home! My
foster mama says I have lots of affectionate energy and
am happy, happy, happy. I just love people! I am
learning about going to the bathroom outside, how to sit
and "down" as I am so happy to play with my foster
mama I jump up in joy! She says I am very pretty, the
color of my beautiful eyes matches my fur. Come meet
me!! I have lots of love to give.
is that which emotionally paralyzes us? How is that we may thrive at this thing called
What
In voices that are awash with need and ablaze with yearning, the people invite us in
story. Stories of love, loss, hidden fears and deepest desires. And inevitably, these
their
turn to childhood. They speak of a hunger that only a parent can appease, of a thirst
stories
only a parent can quench. The other day, a man in forties, explored his particularly
that
relationship with his father. Yes, we grapple with problems of our childhood long
difficult
few hold a greater power or more
Parents,
responsibility. And this is why we
immense
propose the purpose that we occupy
should
role of parenthood in an entirely different
the
with a renewed curiosity, a heightened
way,
a transformed commitment.
awareness,
nothing like parenthood that needs to
Because
at the forefront of our global
be
It is a call, the linchpin that
consciousness.
how our children will thrive. Everything:
affects
they take care of themselves, each other,
how
earth, show compassion, tolerate
the
handle their emotions, create,
differences,
innovate. This is where global
invent,
begins. We cannot expect our
transformation
to embody an intelligent
children
if we as parents haven’t dared
consciousness
model this ourselves. It all starts with us and
to
we parent. Our children are facing today
how
today that we couldn’t have
challenges
of. And evidence suggests that they
dreamed
buckling under the pressure. One in five
are
have signs of a mental health
children
Now that is a hair-raising statistic.
disorder.
was a study done in the UK of 30.000
There
and it was reported that one in ten,
children,
the age of 8, reported being unhappy on
over
consistent basis. Something is amiss. We
a
to sit up, pay attention and raise our
need
differently. Now, of course, parental
children
isn’t the only factor at play. There
influence
confusing and colliding and chaotic
are
in our children’s life that shape
influences
indeterminably. We aren’t the only ones,
them
course. There’s neurobiology, there’s
of
there’s social pressures, there’s
temperament,
We could blame psychiatry, education
poverty.
the government, and chances are may be
and
but our influence in these spheres is
right,
limited.
relatively
let see where we hold indubitable
But
That is un relationship we nurture
power.
our children. Our children and us,
with
after moment after moment.
moment
glamorous here. Early in the
Nothing
as they brush their teeth, as we
morning,
off their backpack, as we soothe away
take
tears, brush away their fears, put them
their
sleep at night. This is where each one of
to
holds transformative power. There is no
us
Now this isn’t just some clinical
excuse.
here speaking of her
psychologist
There’s real science behind this
convictions.
show how the parental relationship
to
not only our emotionality and our
impacts
but also our neurobiology.
psychology,
don’t hurt our children because we are
We
or ill-intentioned, certainly not out of a
evil
of love. We hurt our children for one
lack
only: it’s because we are hurting
reason
and we barely know it. It’s
ourselves
we are unconscious, because we
because
inherited legacies of emotional
have
from our parents. We’re sitting on
baggage
baggage that lies dormant
emotional
waiting to be triggered at a
unconscious,
who better to trigger us than our
And
They just know the buttons to push.
children?
our children, we get theatre seats,
Through
seats to the theatrics of our
orchestra
You know when we lose our
immaturity.
with our children and believe that
temper
they
because they’re that, but because
isn’t
they’ve
this? Why don’t you do that? Why
are it’s not because they are
Chances
but because we come from a
inadequate,
of inner lack, and we ourselves live
the tyranny of a severe inner critic. You
under
when our children are disrespectful to us
and
and commiserate with our friends about
they’re
ourselves
consistency, with order, with handling
with saying no. You know, our
conflict,
come to us whole, complete and
They’re happy with two sticks, a stone
worthy.
and
so deeply in an unconscious
conditioned
so served from our own sense of
community news
Michelle Coleman Smith, Founder of 'More Than Care', tells us about a new
service she opens up this month for the elderly in the community of Valencia.
Richard: “First what is name of your business? What area does it cover?
Michelle: “It’s called ‘More than Care’ and covers the whole area of Valencia.”
Richard: “What is the purpose of More Than Care?”
Michelle: “Purpose is to provide a care service that allows people to remain in their own home.”
“It’s a professional care service for all English clients. We offer individual care packages for each client,
fully insured and will be provided by qualified staff. All aspects of support will be provided for, from activities of daily living to full time
palliative care.”
Richard: “How can people get financial support if they don't have enough money for private help?”
Michelle: “We will get the contacts to speak with advisers who can help them for gaining financial support with attendance
allowance.”
Richard: “Is this for English speaking people only?”
Michelle: “Yes, all our staff speak English fluently.”
Richard: “What qualifications, background and experience do you staff have?”
Michelle: “All of our staff will have a minimum of level 3 NVQ in care, the manager has full qualifications for ten years.(currently
working in Alicante area).”
Richard: “What is your vision for the future regarding care for the elderly in the community of Valencia?”
Michelle: “All clients have a right to remain at home with as much care and comfort as they need.
The sad fact is that some are having to return to England against their wishes or go into residential Spanish care homes.
So we would like to see them being able to stay here in their homes in Valencia and be cared for instead.”
"The purpose is also to liberate the body and mind from any blockages and to facilitate a stronger flow of the positive energy through our
energy channels. To gain more sensitivity to our own body so that we understand its messages. To awaken the Inner Healer."
Richard: "What types of different exercises do you use in order to do that? can you explain what they are?"
New Community Centre opens
Wecassa opens Saturday 23rd March 2019 in L'Eliana,
Valencia.
At last there is a community centre for families that has common
sense written all over it!
Doesn’t it make sense to have a place where the whole family can go
and spend time together learning and discover? To be in a place
where the whole focus is on people supporting each other whether
through cooking, cleaning or helping out with logotics?
Wecasa is a family friendly community centre for English speaking
people, a place to integrate with the Spanish community as well,
make new friends, and eat healthy meals. It offers indoor and outdoor
can enjoy your time no matter what the weather is like.
Community News & Business Valencia was delighted to get to speak
the founder of Wecasa, Emily van der Sluis, and discover more about
this good news which is definitely worth sharing!

The Interview
Richard: “Can you tell me about Wecasa, and what
it is and what is the main purpose of it?”
Emily: “The reason that I started this is to
accommodate parents who loves to be a parent, but
who don’t like to cook, clean or do logistics. I don’t
like doing these things either, so that is why I started
it!”
[We both started laughing!]
“It is important being together and having a
community feeling because having kids is awesome,
but it is also pretty lonely. You have to do the rituals
every single day. Your kids have to eat, they need a
bath, they need story time, they need a lot of things
every single day. There is no stop to it!! So I want
Wecasa to be the place that we can share these
rituals and do it together.”
Yuri, Emily, Manu (2 yrs) and Evia (4yrs)
Richard: “So how does it work?”
Emily: “Well basically, parents help each other’s kids, rather than just supporting their own. If
some kid has dirty hands and I am close by, I can help them get cleaned up rather than asking the
mum to do it!”
Richard: “So you mean, more hands make lighter work.”
Emily: “Yes, exactly! We have to do this to break this routine that we have every single day.”
Richard: “Do you think this is something which is missing in society as a whole, that people are
thinking to individualistically?”
Emily: “I don’t think it is thinking individualistically, I think everyone would like it, it’s just that
our system is organised this way. Everyone works really hard all the time so everyone has to rush
all the time. I think the system at the moment lacks the possibility to live in a community.”
“Work always demands a lot of attention, so does your partner and so do your parents. I
remember working for the Dutch embassy, it was a really stressful job. I would tell my kids at
least 20 times a day ‘We are late and we don’t have time for this!’

Richard: “So at some stage you realised that you didn't want to live that life any more?”
outdoor play areas
Children's
Emily: “Yes, exactly. It started on a Tuesday, I was serving up dinner for my kids. Whilst I was
doing that my youngest child was pulling at my trousers and wanted to be picked up, but I
couldn’t because I was preparing food. So he starts screaming for attention. Then I saw my
daughter peeing in the hallway and stepping on her own pee and walking around in the house.
Then the doorbell rings and the deliveries I ordered online arrive. I am looking in my bag to give
the delivery man a tip, finally I pick up one kid to stop him from screaming and I yell at my other
one to get of the bed with her pee covered feet! Then I pay the delivery guy, get the groceries,
and as I turn around I see that the dinner has burnt!!!”
“You have so many of these moments everyday. At some point everything happens at the same
time and you just have to keep your cool because you have kids and they are dependant on you. I
am human as well and these moments are stressful. This is the moment that I thought, I have to
change my life. I don’t want to live like this any more. And this is how the idea of Wecasa started.”
Richard: “What were you thinking?”
Emily: “How can I change my life so I can do the things that I love doing? I love to organise events,
I love to bring people together, but at the same time I love being with my kids. I love playing with
them and teaching them. I just thought of a brilliant way of connecting all these things so that I
have a life which I actually enjoy!”
Richard: “Well congratulations for creating it here in Valencia which is just what the community
needs!”
Emily: “I didn’t know that when I came here. Yes, we are lucky that we are here and there is a very
big community here. People are really interested in Wecassa.”
Richard: “Was it easy to find a good location?”

Emily: “Well it needs to have a big English speaking community around it, it needed to be no less
than 30 minutes from the city centre and not more than 30 minutes from the airport. As Yuri, my
husband travels a lot. And the house prices shouldn’t be too expensive. And lastly we wanted to
be close to international schools as that is our target audience. Not necessarily English schools,
but people who are interested in learning English. This is because everything in Wecasa will be in
English.”
Richard: “This will be a great way of integrating Wecasa with the Spanish community?”
Emily: “Yes, there are Spanish families that know how important it is to be able to speak English
and there are English people who want to get to know Spanish families. The problem is that after
school, if you kids never interact with English speaking people, they won’t learn the language, so
this is possible at Wecasa.”
Richard: “So what is the main focus of Wecasa as a community centre?”
Emily: “It is an after school community for the children and parents. From 5.30pm until 9pm,
every weekday except for Friday, there will be things happening for kids and parents to
accommodate for parents who love being parents but don’t like cooking, cleaning and logistics!
“And then at the weekend there will also be family events as well. But during the day, Wecasa is
empty, so it would be a shame not to use it if there are people in the community who want to hire
out a room for an event or a workshop. For example, one of your Admins, Sally Ainsworth is
holding a workshop here for people with chronic illnesses and Stephanie Wiendels, who you
interviewed last year, she organises her ‘Sing & Swing’ classes here every week.”
“Mindfulness, Baby & Mummy workshops, Art classes, Yoga, all these types of things. And these
things are going to be good for my kids as well!”
