Hello,<br />

My name is Renee Whiteley and I am a 5th year architecture student. I was born in<br />

Brooklyn, New York, grew up in Kingston, Jamaica and I now reside in Washingston,<br />

D.C. Art and technical drawing has been my utmost passion since high school, my<br />

only focus was to be successful in architecture. My love for architecture has grown<br />

tremendously since my first day at Howard University. Being at Howard has encouraged<br />

me to enter competitions and be actively involved. Pursuing architecture as a<br />

profession directs me to a path where the love of art and people can be combined,<br />

while offering a service of design and planning. Building art is a synthesis of life in<br />

materialized form. It is my goal to not only stand out as an architect but also as an<br />

individual, for me creating is a powerful skill, an intriguing ability evolving from our<br />

originality and perspectives. By formulating our own unique creations, we may<br />

endeavor to create a parallel between our imagination and the world in which we live.<br />

This portfolio is the composition of my academic work, it shows what was done in my<br />

second and third year of architecture school. This will provide insight on my personality<br />

and work ethics.

The openness of the design invites the neighboring<br />

police department to enjoy the space with the<br />

community, creating a natural flow of interaction<br />

between two conflicting groups. Over time, this<br />

design will dissolve the guard between the police<br />

and the community, unifying Sunnyside as a safe and<br />

happy community that can look forward to a positive<br />

Our approach to tackling this issue<br />

begins with the community itself and<br />

recognizing the needs. According to<br />

current residents, they would like to see<br />

better educational resources, healthier<br />

living, a safe and walkable neighborhood,<br />

affordability, amenities, and<br />

community-based retail. In keeping all of<br />

this in mind, we have proposed a development<br />

centered on the concept of a<br />

“ripple effect”. When one drop of water<br />

crashes into a pond, it creates a ripple<br />

that travels throughout the rest of the<br />

body of water. The proposed Woodlawn<br />

Gateway Pavilion aims to embrace the<br />

Woodlawn community and inadvertently<br />

spreads the Woodlawn history and<br />

culture by means of modern pro-gram<br />

and design.<br />

Transportation is a vital component for a thriving community. Public transportation allows residents to experience more<br />

opportunities, resources, and amenities that may not have been offered otherwise. Implementing a shuttle service for our<br />

site will con-nect the residence of woodlawn and neighboring communities through the revitalize 63rd street corridor, to<br />

our Transit Center, and to the Barack Obama Presidential Center. The timeless and minimalist design of our Transit center<br />

along with our retail and other attractions will help increase ridership. Incorporating a rainwater system will assist with<br />

irrigation on site as well as reduce the amount of water used by the Transit Center.<br />

LANGSTON TERRACE DWELLING WAS BUILT IN 1938,<br />

IT IS THE OLDEST PUBLIC HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN<br />

WASHINGTON, DC AND AMONG THE FIRST IN THE<br />

COUNTRY. THE SITE WAS FORMALLY FUELED BY A<br />

COAL-FIRED POWER PLANT, WHICH WAS DECOMMIS-<br />

SIONED IN THE 1980S. THE PLANT HAS BEEN INOPERA-<br />

TIVE FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS.<br />

THE DESIGN CHALLENGE WAS ENFORCED BY SUSTAIN-<br />

ABLE DC. THEY PROVIDED THE DISTRICT OF COLUM-<br />

BIA HOUSING AUTHORITY (DCHA) WITH $245,000<br />

FROM THE SUSTAINABLE DC INNOVATION CHALLENGE<br />

GRANT TO TEST THE FEASIBILITY OF REDEVELOPING AN<br />

IDLE POWER PLANT AT LANGSTON INTO A CLEAN<br />

ENERGY-GENERATING ASSET. THE GRANT WOULD HELP<br />

Yin′ and yang′ in chinese philosophy<br />

and religion, two principles,<br />

one negative, dark, and feminine<br />

(yin), and one positive, bright, and<br />

masculine (yang), whose interaction<br />

influences the destinies of creatures<br />

and things. In chinese philosophy,<br />

yin and yang describes how opposite<br />

or contrary forces are actually<br />

complementary, interconnected,<br />

and interdependent in the natural<br />

world, and how they give rise to<br />

each other as they interrelate to one<br />

another. In this case the building<br />

primary focus is conncectivity, and<br />

the role of yin and yang highlights<br />

that. It defines the relationship with<br />

above and below and light and dark<br />

in this building. Whered the skylight<br />

& floor acts as the connector inbetween.
