Refusing borderlines and classifications, he has the same admiration for Thelonious Monk as for Charles ives—who, in his eyes, represent “the yin and the yang of the iconoclastic American spirit.” • Memories of Paris focuses on the live music Watson champions. Perusing his memories of the metropolis where he first arrived in 1978 was an ideal occasion to give free expression to his lyricism and exuberance. • From Pigalle to the Palais Royal, Montmartre, and Clichy, Watson’s compositions bring us “his” vision of Paris: romantic, lively, rebellious, and hectic. His solitary exercises in front of the 88 keys of his piano encourage reverie and awareness. On their eponymous debut in 2004, published under Jean-Jacques Pussiau’s label night Bird, the trio dedicated a track to David Lynch. • On Time Cycle, the three accomplices adopt a totally subjective vision. With friends Paolo Fresu and Dave Liebman, they project their hypnotic, mysterious, and fantastical universe. Spoken extracts from films (Shadows by John Cassavetes, The Maltese Falcon by John Huston, Citizen Kane by Orson Welles) and from radio broadcasts (War of the Worlds, CBS Radio Mystery Theater) match the notes perfectly. • “Short Cuts,” one of the 13 original compositions here, could have been chosen as the title for the album. Indeed, the reference to director Robert Altman, and to author Raymond Carver, seems to impose itself for this musical puzzle. Each of the titles fits into this picture. • With Giant Peach, brothers Adam (15) and Zack (18) carry the O’Farrill musical tradition into its third generation, following famous grandfather Chico (1921–2001), and father Arturo, a 2009 Grammy winner. • The band burns through seven originals and one Benny Golson cover (“Stablemates”), displaying a fierce musical intelligence that challenges the listener with complex compositions, intricate arrangements, and subtle interplay. • The O’Farrill Brothers made their international debut in 2009, performing as soloists at the My Fuji Summer Festival in Japan. He has played with Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, and McCoy Tyner, and has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards. • The national Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has announced that Liebman is a recipient of the 2011 nEA Jazz Masters Award, the nation’s highest honor in this distinctly American music. All of the 2011 recipients will be publicly honored at the annual awards ceremony and concert on January 11, 2011 at Frederick P.
