MAURO CORDA
LEE JUNG WOONG

Preface
Few artists have the ability to expertly render artwork that encapsulates themes of
simplicity, movement, and realism, all into a single work. Amongst these, Mauro Corda
and Lee Jung Woong excel. The idea of movement is a very prominent concept explored
seamlessly in both bodies of work, as well as the contrast of realistic versus unrealistic.
Though Corda’s works portray a sense of realism through bodily details, the positions
simultaneously flirt with the very limits of a human body’s capacities. In Lee’s world,
his work may be as simple as a brush splash onto a canvas, but he has explored the
extendibility of realism by simply applying precise strokes.
Showcasing the best of realism and imagination of when East meets West, this exhibition
will illustrate the harmonious blend of cultures through exhibiting two very different set of
aesthetics contrasting each other. With this juxtaposition, Corda and Lee demonstrate a
well fused consistency through magnifying movement: movement of the body, of the
brush, of paint, and even the movement of the viewers’ eyes. By the very strength of
their art, they breathe life into matter.
Opera Gallery Singapore is proud to bring them together and to host their first joint
exhibition in 2019.
Lee Jung Woong
Born in Ulleung-Gun, South Korea, in 1963, Lee Jung Woong began to study art at the age of
40, at the University of Keimyung. Specialising in hyperrealism, he revisited American Post-War
Action Painting, initiated notably by Joan Mitchell and Jackson Pollock.
His approach is marked by his Oriental sensibility, evoking the art of calligraphy. The Hanji paper,
made from mulberry tree pulp, he uses as his medium anchors the work in reality, as the material
remains raw. Lee Jung Woong illustrates his canvases with large traditional Chinese brushes
saturated with ink. He is particularly interested in the imperfections created by the spontaneity
of his gestures: the ink spots, the splashes or the angle of the brush… Lee also questions the
influence of traditional painting on the perspectives of contemporary Asian art.
His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States, South
Korea, Singapore and Europe, and features in many collections, for example, the Seoul Museum
of Art and the Daelim Museum in Seoul.
