Early detection is key in treating cancer.
One highly effective tool is endoscopy.
This minimally-invasive, diagnostic medical
procedure looks inside the body to assess
the surface of internal organs.
When doctors in the Surgical Center at Wilcox
Memorial Hospital needed new endoscopes,
the Wilcox Foundation turned to the G.N. Wil-
cox Trust for help. Once again, the trust funded
the upgraded flexible endoscopes.
Ever since 1938, when Wilcox Memorial Hospital
was established as a non-profit community
healthcare facility to serve all of Kauai, generous
gifts by the G.N. Wilcox Trust have enabled Wilcox
Health to keep pace with changing standards and
technology, in order to meet the healthcare needs of
Kauai’s people.
G.N. Wilcox, for whom the hospital was named, made many financial contributions
throughout his life. He also established a trust fund, charged to “carry on or assist in any kind of
public, charitable, educational or religious work, and for the aid and advancement of the public
health and morals.”
Wilcox Health, which carries G.N.’s name, is a perpetual testament to his generous
philanthropic spirit.
Bringing the best to Kauai.
Wilcox Health’s new gastroenterologist, Dr. Stephen Keith, could practice anywhere in the world.
He chose the Garden Isle because “I love this island and feel it is a
great place for my family. Wilcox also has the support of Hawaii
Pacific Health and the Kauai community to provide cuttingedge
technology in the new Surgical Center.”
With generous support from the G.N. Wilcox Trust, Dr.
Keith is using upgraded flexible endoscopes to closely
check the interior surfaces of the esophagus, small
intestine, stomach and colon of his patients.
The devices are equipped with an endo-flushing pump
that can operate at the touch of a button – a major
advantage over the old, manual method of flushing with a
syringe. The new endoscopes also have wide-angle imaging
capability. This enables Dr. Keith to thoroughly observe an
organ’s surfaces with clear, high-quality images and a life-like
color rendition on a large display.
“I have been given the best tools to do my work,” he says. “I’m able
to bring the latest in detecting disorders of the colon to Kauai
patients. I want to thank the G.N. Wilcox Trust for its
gift, as well as our private donors. It is your
generosity and commitment to our healthcare
network that allows a specialist
like me to provide Kauai patients with
the newest procedures in treating
illnesses and injuries.”
