From the Programme Editor
A welcome to Tommy Warrilow and his Ashford
Utd team this evening and also to the Ashford
Utd committee and board, both sets of
supporters and the match officials. With Ashford
riding high in second place in the league
this will be a tough task for Chris Lynch’s lads.
Phew a win at last which means we are no
longer in the list of steps 1 to 4 most out of
form teams! That list included us, North Ferriby
Utd, Gresley and Staines Town! All the committee,
and I’m sure Chris and his management
team,
want to
thank you
supporters
for believing
and providing
the most
amazing
support,
both home
and away.
You truly are
the most
loyal fans in
the league!
We must
also once
again thank
Gillingham
FC for loaning
us some
excellent
talent and
also to the Gillingham club secretary Gwen
who has been so helpful to us.
You will notice that there are no club secretaries
notes this time, that’s because he has been
on one of his many holidays and hasn’t time to
do them. However As a bonus there are notes
from our manager Chris Lynch.
This programme pays tribute to Tom for having
passed the 150 game milestone for us – a
great big thank you to Tom for sticking with us
through thick and thin..and also to his dad Gary
for his support. I have also reproduced the latest
Respect table and we are a respectable
28th out of the 81 Bostik league clubs,
(omitting Thamesmead Town.)
The new dressing rooms in the lower building
are coming along nicely. One sticking point we
had was that we couldn’t get an electrician
however thanks to our president Alan Barty we
now seem to have found one.
We will need painters to complete the renovation
so if you can help please contact Alan.
Our ground grading is coming up shortly and
the dressing rooms was the major project that
we had to complete by 31 st March, however
there are countless smaller jobs that will need
to be completed by the deadline date so please
look out on the website and social media for
details of some of those.
If you can help then that would be magic! If
you want to help in other ways, for instance
standing in to do the Bostik Live scores updates
when the current updater is not available,
or producing the typed team sheets then
please see John or me.
From the Manager
What a result on Saturday! A magnificent 4-3 away win against a very good Phoenix Athletic
side.
With five players still out we knew that it was going to be another battle. Unfortunately,
five became six with new recruit Josh Spencer pulling up with a
knee injury in the warm up. This meant young Jack Morell had to be
switched into the centre back role at the last minute, seeing Rob Lofting
come back into the frame at left back.
Going 2-0 up on 24 minutes showed just how dangerous we have become
within the last three weeks, averaging 17 x goal scoring opportunities per game, in the last three
matches alone. Where as previously we were lucky to have created between 2/5 per game.
We knew the new players would take time to gel, they have begun to do so already, hitting the
ground running in very little time, this comes down to the type of players I have introduced coupled
with the existing players mentality and commitment to accepting them and working hard to
build those all important relationships.
Having identified a major area of
development from day one... the
amount of and creating good goal
scoring opportunities, I am more
than happy with the returns thus
far, now we must turn our attention
to goals conceded and at certain
times within matches.
However, the squad must take
high praise knowing we have
achieved this with three top centre
backs out injured.
As I am sure you have all seen by
now, the last three games have Johans’s match winning goal (Pic by Ken Medwyn)
shown a complete new belief, a
new style/system and some great,
entertaining football being produced.
I said we would battle, we would
play attractive, entertaining, attacking football and we would get out of this situation.
Well, Saturday’s three points have driven us back up to 16th place and sets us up nicely for the
next set of matches where we will be looking to achieve safety as soon as possible.
I am proud of the lads performances yet again today, it takes a lot of heart to have the courage
and self belief (especially after the season we have had so far) to believe that we can go out and
beat anyone on our day, we are not afraid of anyone in this league.
Now we face another very good side in Ashford Utd this evening, where we go searching for another
positive result.
Saturday’s man of the match for me was Roman Campbell, and it was also very pleasing to see
Johann score the winner.
Thank you all for your continued support, we are pleased we could deliver the win for you.
Chris Lynch
Respect table to 17th January 2019
This is the latest Respect table. Only the top 40 are shown. Sittingbourne are 28th out of
81 teams. Ashford Utd are 54th.
Ashford Utd — A Brief History
Ashford United Football Club was formed in 1891 with some varying degrees of success until the
team ceased in 1928.
In April 1930, Sir Charles Igglesden presided over a meeting to form a senior football club in Ashford
and subsequently applied to compete in the Kent League, FA Cup and Kent Senior Cup. It
was around then that Ashford Town came into existence, rather than Ashford United, and acquired
its nickname of ‘The Nuts & Bolts’ as many of the members were from the ranks of the engineers
in the railway works.
It was cup football that was to provide the greatest success for Town, reaching the first round
proper of the FA Cup as a Kent League side in 1959/60, losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace. In the
1960’s, Town reached the first round of the FA Cup on four occasions, falling to league opposition
each time. Further honours arrived with success in the Kent Senior Cup in 1959 and 1963. In
1972/73, Town reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy.
During the 1990’s, manager Neil Cugley produced an entertaining and successful side. Highlights
included a first round FA Cup match with Fulham, witnessed by a capacity crowd of 3,300 at
Homelands with Sky TV highlights. The result was an impressive 2-2 draw; the replay at Craven
Cottage saw the game into extra-time with Town eventually losing 5-3. In 1996/97, Ashford drew
Watford away in the second-round, losing 5-0.
In 2009/10, following a
Boardroom fall-out, the
club’s future was put in the
balance following the winding
up of Ashford Town
Football Club but now, under
the new name of Ashford
United, the club continues
to progress.
The 'new' United was
formed in 2011, resurrecting
a name used by the town's
football club around the advent
of the twentieth century
and, in the truest form, represents
a 'phoenix club', rising
from the ashes of financial
ruin and being run by
the Crosbie family with the help of members of the local community.
Homelands from the air
Ashford United are currently in the Bostik League South Division. After finishing second in two
consecutive seasons, ultimately losing out to Whyteleafe and Phoenix Sports respectively The
2016-17 season finally brought success for AUFC who became league champions earning their
place for promotion into the Bostik League.
This was a much deserved reward for the hard work of the manager and the playing team and of
course the team involved in the running of the football club and all it’s very loyal supporters.

EVERY SEASON in the FA Cup there is a
shock. Whether it was AFC Wimbledon beating
West Ham United in convincing manner last
Saturday night or Barnet’s magnificent run to
the fourth round – and now a replay.
The Bees have won away at League sides
Bristol Rovers and Sheffield United before
sharing a six-goal thriller with Brentford on
Monday night to set-up another clash at Griffin
Park.
But even though these upsets so often happen,
we still hear the same tired line trotted out
about the “magic of the cup”.
Invariably it is “alive and well” or the “romance
still exists”. Well, of course. At these levels it
never stopped. Just because some Premier
League sides choose to rest players, that
doesn’t stop the lower league and Non-League
clubs thriving in the competition.
My theory is it’s just become an easy thing to
say. It’s an easy line for all of us in the media
or on the terraces. It’s so often repeated that
eventually we just believe it.
But I’ve seen enough great FA Cup days in my
time on The NLP to know that the FA Cup will
keep creating memories and history every
year. And maybe Barnet can keep adding to
that in the next fortnight. Good luck to the
Bees!
DAN SPARKES’ wonder free-kick for Barnet in
the 3-3 draw with Brentford was straight out of
the top drawer. He’s always been a player that
has impressed when I’ve seen him over the
years.
But it also serves as a reminder of perhaps one
of the greatest double acts in recent Non-
League memory when he was at Braintree.
In the same side as striker Sean Marks, the
pair finally got on the scoresheet together
against Nuneaton Borough for goals.
If only Marks & Sparkes had been able to repeat
the feat in the same game as former
Grimsby striker Lenell John-Lewis...
GOOD NEWS The FA are addressing an issue
that often crops up around club and league allocations
in the summer.
The provisional division line-ups are released
on the understanding things can change between
then and the leagues’ AGMs.
Often a club has gone bust in between time
and the domino effect can see teams moved
leagues through no fault of their own.
Last season Shaw Lane withdrew late and the
knock-on effect hit clubs across the country.
Wimborne were promoted to Step 3, while Banbury
and Hednesford Town, at the same level,
and Fleet Town at Step 4 were moved laterally
across divisions.
For Fleet particularly it was a crushing blow
they would never have seen coming.
The FA were bound by regulations at the time
but revealed to us in last week’s NLP that
they’ve acted to change them. From now it is
most likely only clubs from the same divisions
will be affected – and not those hundreds of
miles away.
IT was a real pleasure to speak to Ramsbottom
United chairman Harry Williams recently.
His tales of more than 50 years at the Northern
Premier League club were a joy to listen to as
Rammy gear up to welcome AFC Fylde in the
FA Trophy.
He still insists players buy some raffle tickets
before they get their wages and he spends
hours tending the ground that now bears his
name.
In his 53 years since setting the club up, he’s
missed just three games. It’s people like Mr
Ramsbottom that keep Non-League going
across the country. We applaud you all.
Matt Badcock
Tom Loynes Notches up 150!
Tom Loynes celebrated his 150th appearance
for the Brickies a couple of weeks
ago when we played Ramsgate.
Tom was brought in by the Ward brothers
in the summer of 2012 as a winger (and
emergency goalkeeper!!!)
Previously at Gillingham and Dover, Tom
made his Brickies debut in a 2-1 win at
Three Bridges in August 2012.
Following his departure, he had spells at
Whitstable, Ramsgate and Hythe, before
returning to the fold in August 2017 when
he was the oldest player in the squad at
only 25, scoring a memorable goal at
Lewes.
Tom has scored 18 goals for us (6 this
season!) but, assisted with countless
more. I'm sure he will tell you each one in
detail if you're brave enough to ask him.
LOL!!!
Sittingbourne 1 VCD Athletic 2, Att 120
The first promise new manager Chris Lynch
made to fans was that his Sittingbourne teams
would battle.
And how they battled, even though they ended
up suffering their 12th defeat in the last 13
games.
But unlike the previous two games, when they
were taken apart, this was a nail-biter and deep
into added time Sittingbourne were still piling
forward in desperate pursuit of an equaliser.
VCD managed to keep them out, through solid
defending and a fair bit of gamesmanship, but
this was a hugely improved performance by a
young Sittingbourne team.
If they occasionally lacked quality in certain areas
they made up for it in enthusiasm and determination
– surely they’ll beat off the threat of
relegation if this is how they’re going to play for
the rest of the season.
With two of their best players, Tom Loynes and
Lex Allan, watching injured from the sidelines,
they brought in just one new signing:
on-loan Gillingham teenager Roman Campbell
at centre-forward.
And what a performance by the 18-year-old,
who was unfazed by the tough VCD defenders,
and capped a fine display by getting a debut
goal. He was brave, agile and mobile, and led
the line beautifully – much more like the sorelymissed
Kane Rowland, and the sort of striker
Sittingbourne have been lacking all season.
VCD, pressing for a play-off place and with one
of the best away records in the division, missed
a couple of good chances as they produced
some early pressure while at the other end
Lewis Chambers volleyed over and Izzy
Adebayo beat the keeper with a chip but a defender
cleared off the line.
Playing some good football, VCD took the lead
in the 20th minute when the tricky Hudson got
in behind right-back Arben Muskaj and scored
at the second attempt with a neat finish into the
far corner.
They hit the post in their next attack and goalkeeper
Patrick Lee produced three good saves
as Sittingbourne did comparatively well to keep
it to 1-0 at half-time.
After getting thumped in their previous two
games it was always a worry how much confidence
would dip once they fell behind again,
but they showed lots of determination to keep
themselves in touching distance.
Too much determination from midfielder Tommie
Fagg, who had already been booked when
he committed another foul, the referee resisting
pressure from VCD players and bench to show
him a second card.
But Fagg was sensibly withdrawn from the action,
and the two half-time substitutes helped
transform the game for Sittingbourne in the second
half. Henry Woods had what I thought was
his best 45 minutes for the team and Joshua
Spencer was full of enterprise in a bright first
game for the club.
So it was after the break that Sittingbourne really
took the game to VCD, Billy Lewins forcing
the keeper to make a fine save and the crowd
behind the goal shrieking for a penalty for handball
which wasn’t given.
Midway through the half and Sittingbourne got
the equaliser their improved performance merited.
Adebayo hit over a terrific cross from out on
the right-wing and Campbell just beat the keeper
to it to get the ball over the line.
The 1-1 scoreline lasted just three minutes as
VCD found space down their left for a cross to
come into the far post where substitute Vincent,
who had only just come on, volleyed home.
Sittingbourne again recovered well and dominated
the final period of play, but couldn’t quite
find a finish of enough quality to level it again,
as VCD took time out of the game at every opportunity.
An exhilarating game on a mucky night, and
praise for both teams for the way they tore into
the match and produced a really good
evening’s football.
All it needs now is for this rejigged Sittingbourne
team to play with this energy and
commitment week-in week-out and surely some
better results will follow.
Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 26th January 2019
Bostik South East
Sittingbourne 1 Haywards Heath Town 2,
Att 172
Sittingbourne were by far the better side in the
first half and could have been about four-up
with more clinical finishing.
Then in a more even second half they were up
against 10 men for most of it, but gifted Haywards
Heath an equaliser and watched in despair
as what had somehow seemed the inevitable
winning goal sailed past them in the final
minute.
In fact, even though this was a makeshift and
youthful Sittingbourne team, with players out of
position to cover those missing, they put in an
excellent performance for much of the game
and will surely get out of relegation trouble if
they maintain the standard they set for most of
it. To crown a disappointing day, Sittingbourne
were the only one of the bottom five sides to
lose and they’re now stuck on the same number
of points as Greenwich Borough at the
very foot of the table.
They were missing the injured Lex Allan, Tom
Loynes, Ben Fitchett, Billie Lewins and Gil Carvalho,
and gave first starts to Joshua Spencer,
Jack Morrell and Timmie Babbington, with
Tommie Fagg switched from his normal midfield
role to centre-back.
Despite all the enforced changes, Sittingbourne
made a confident start and were
soon taking the game to their visitors, who arrived
with an exceptional record of just one defeat
in 10 away league games this season.
Two early chances fell to Roman Campbell,
after good work by Morrell and then Chambers,
but the first was blocked and the second
the keeper saved at full stretch. Then the
keeper fumbled a shot from Babbington,
Campbell had another shot blocked after a
great Izzy Adebayo run, and Khalil McFarlane
didn’t realise he had an empty goal to aim at
when the ball came to him 30 yards out with
the keeper miles off his line.
Haywards Heath hardly got forward at all during
the first half but it needed a great defensive
header by Fagg, who was excellent and disciplined
all game as an emergency defender, to
keep them out after half-an-hour.
A minute later and Sittingbourne were ahead.
A quick throw-in out on the right, good work by
Adebayo and a shooting chance for Babbington
ended with Lewis Chambers stealing in at
the far post to blast the loose ball home.
Even at one-up Sittingbourne continued
to carve out chances, and Henry Woods had a
shot saved when he was very well-placed and
the ever-threatening Campbell headed wide
from Chris Webber’s cross.
It was quite a first half performance by Sittingbourne
with Adebayo, Babbington, Chambers,
Fagg and Webber all very impressive
and Gillingham youngsters Campbell and
Woods linking well up front.
But matches are 90 minutes and Haywards
Heath came out for the second half clearly determined
to make more of a fist of it.
They were lucky to soon be level, though, Morrell
under-hitting a back-pass after 49 minutes
so that Louis was able to nip in and cleverly lift
the ball over the advancing Patrick Lee.
Chambers was all over the pitch and soon had
the ball in the net only to be given offside, and
seconds later he was in the middle of the field,
flying into a tackle that cost him a booking. A
Haywards Heath midfielder sought revenge by
launching into a dangerous high tackle on
McFarlane and was inevitably sent off.
Sittingbourne took advantage to press for the
winner but Campbell shot over from a great
Morrell pass and Babbington got round the
keeper but couldn’t keep the ball in play. Then
it looked as though he’d scored with a header
from Campbell’s set-up but the keeper somehow
kept it out. Knowing how many crucial late
goals Sittingbourne have conceded this season,
it seemed odds-on to happen again, even
though Haywards Heath had done less to deserve
one than many who had came before.
Whatever, they got it anyway, an 89th minute
corner headed clear to the edge of the area
where the classy Louis caught it superbly on
the volley to hit the winner low into the corner
of the goal.
A tough blow for Sittingbourne – and for their
fans, swelled in numbers and noise by many
Danish fans on a weekend away to see their
twinned club play.
So many decent performances, and all of them
whole-hearted, that surely it must all turn
around for Sittingbourne sooner rather than
later.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Chris Webber,
Jack Morrell, Joshua Spencer, Tommie Fagg,
Lewis Chambers (Yellow card), Izzy Adebayo
(Johan Caney-Bryan, 77 min), Khalil McFarlane
(Liam Middleton, 59 min), Roman Campbell,
Henry Woods, Timmie Babbington. Subs
not used: Rob Lofting, Abdel Ndew, Dylan
Riches.
