Local village leaders and Hindu families said
they would cover the costs and pleaded with
the Christians not to Yile a case, he said.
Upper-caste Hindus opposed reconstruction
of the aging, original church building last
year, applying pressure on authorities to
deny permission. A junior civil judge ruled in
June that reconstruction could begin and
directed opposing parties not to interfere,
but a local Hindu ofYicial has yet to grant
permission for the reconstruction, the pastor
said.
The hostile tone of the National Democratic
Alliance government, led by the Hindu
nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, against
non-Hindus, has emboldened Hindu
extremists in several parts of the country to
attack Christians since Prime Minister
Narendra Modi took power in May 2014,
