Dear Sir/Madam, 

Upcoming road closure: retaining wall replacement at Station Hill 

I am writing to you regarding upcoming engineering works on Station Hill to replace a retaining wall that has 

partially collapsed. Traffic lights have been placed along this stretch of road to keep traffic away from the edge 

of the carriageway while site investigation and design of the new structure has been undertaken. 

The work will require the road to be closed as there will be a significant amount of excavation involved to 

remove the existing wall and construct the new structure. 

A contractor is currently being procured for the work with a proposed start date on site of 21 st January. Advance 

notice signs will be placed on the road to inform road users of the road closure nearer the time. The estimated 

duration of the work is 3 months.

Tablets for kids ..... 

Dear Readers 

Happy belated New Year! I hope your year is getting off to a bright start. This month I 

am going to talk about tablets for kids. 

In the Christmas issue I made some suggestions for children’s gifts. One I mentioned 

was the Amazon Fire Kids Edition so decided to buy one to test. Setup was a doddle 

and after a short amount of time I was pleased with how it performed. The apps were 

easy to install, and the controls were easy to setup. What do you get? Well for the 

basic out of the box version you get a tablet with access to the Amazon store and 

there are suggestions from Amazon depending on the details you give. For example I 

wanted apps for my girls so after entering their age it recommended a number of 

apps. Perfect! My girls, like many kids, love watching videos on Youtube so I looked 

for an app for Youtube Kids. However, to my surprise there is no app for this. After 

further investigation it turned out that Google who own Youtube, don’t want to 

release an app for a competitor to use on their devices. 

iPads. These are quite expensive but as most of our devices at home are now Apple 

related (iPhone, iPad) it was hard not to use iPads for the girls as they are used to 

them. They currently use mine and my wife’s which isn’t ideal especially when they 

start sending emails to family, or posting to Facebook. The biggest disadvantage to 

the iPad is there is almost no control on multiple apps. Although we use single app 

mode a lot when they are switching between apps it can be frustrating, for them and 

us, having to enter the code. 

Samsung. I had a Samsung a number of years ago and it was lovely. It wasn't as fast 

as an iPad, but it did everything I needed it to, and more. I preferred it compared with 

other similar devices because it allowed me to do work I couldn’t do on an iPad. I do 

sometimes miss the ability to have full control over how a device works, the back 

end, functions and apps. But I am happy with my iPad now and wouldn’t change 

back.

New Prescribing Guidance Patients are advised that, as per recent guidance from NHS 

England, GP’s will no longer be able to provide an NHS prescription for treatment of 

conditions in the list below but will direct patients to purchase over the counter medicines 

from the Pharmacy. If, as a result of taking these, the condition has not improved the GP will 

consider what alternatives are available which may result in them issuing a prescription. 

NHS England has published guidance to primary care prescribers to not routinely prescribe 

over the counter medicines for 35 common conditions that fall into one of the following 

categories. A self-limiting condition such as a sore throat, cough, cold and virus do not 

require any medical advice or treatment as it will clear up on its own. A minor illness suitable 

for self-care can be treated with items purchased from a pharmacy. Probiotics and some 

vitamins and minerals should also no longer be routinely prescribed because most people 

can, and should, get these from eating a healthy, varied and balanced diet.

We’re kick-starting a healthy 2019 by making soup – a 

quick, tasty way to get some extra goodness down you, as 

well as helping to use up leftovers and reduce food waste. 

You don’t need to be a chef to knock together a really flavoursome soup. All it takes is a little time and 

whatever veg you have in your fridge. Here’s our rough guide to any veg soup. Once you’ve mastered the 

basics, experiment with all manner of flourishes and variations! 

1. Create your flavour base Take all or some of: 1 onion or leek, 1 celery stick, 1 carrot per 300-400g of 

main veg. Chop finely and sweat over a medium heat in butter or oil for at least 10 minutes until soft and 

sweet but not coloured. 

2. Add seasoning, aromatics and hardy herbs (fresh, soft herbs are better added at the end) Add your 

chosen herbs and spices. A bay leaf and a clove or two of chopped garlic rarely go amiss – cook for a 

couple of minutes to allow them to release their flavour, without colouring. 

3. Introduce the main character Add the main vegetable – around 300g – peeled and chopped. Stir to coat 

it in the fat and start its cooking. Leafy veg such as spinach, kale and cabbage are best added toward the 

end of cooking to retain the colour and avoid overcooking. 

4. Add liquid Choose your liquid – water, veg stock or chicken stock are the most versatile – and pour in 

enough to cover the veg. Simmer until the veg is good and tender (usually 30–45 minutes). Sieve or blitz 

or not, or half and half, depending on the consistency you want. A chunky pottage is often good for 

cabbages and kales. Roots most readily lend themselves to a smooth purée, but be cautious not to overblend 

potatoes. 

5. Bulk it out (optional) Towards the end of cooking you can add leafy veg, cooked peas or beans, drained 

tinned pulses, cooked grains or torn-up bread to thicken the soup and add different textures. Cook a few 

minutes or enough to heat through. 

6. Finishing touches Swirl or sprinkle any finishing touches into the serving bowls – yoghurt, crème fraîche, 

seeds, nuts, fresh herbs, garnishes etc. to improve flavour or appearance.

Help Victims of Domestic Abuse – Start saving lives now. Lynton Police are looking for local 

businesses that can assist in a campaign to help stop Domestic Violence. Many victims do not have 

access to outreach support but do visit supermarkets, pharmacies, hairdresser, schools, post offices 

etc. We are not asking you to provide counselling but we are looking for local businesses and services 

to assist with the J9 Initiative to help stop domestic abuse. Leaflets, J9 Information packs and a J9 

sticker can be distributed to shops and businesses to put on display for people to obtain contact 

details to get help. We will be holding an awareness meeting soon which anyone willing to help can 

attend and over the next few weeks PCSO Grace Cleverdon will be passing out leaflets and discussing 

the J9 Initiative. PLEASE HELP if you can. 

There are five main causes of serious injuries and deaths on the region‟s roads 98% of collisions are 

caused by human error. The five most risky behaviours are: Excess or inappropriate speed. Check your 

speedometer regularly. Know the limits – look for signs, especially at junctions. Street lighting means 

30mph, until signs say otherwise. Failure to wear seatbelts. By law, you MUST wear a seatbelt in cars 

and goods vehicles where one is fitted. The driver is liable to prosecution if a child under 14 years 

does not wear a seatbelt or child restraint as required. There are very few exceptions to this. If you are 

medically exempt from wearing a seat belt, your doctor will give you a „Certificate of Exemption‟. Driver 

using a hand-held mobile phone It is illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while 

driving a vehicle, riding a motorcycle or supervising a learner. If you are caught you will be issued with 

fixed penalty notice and will receive a £200 fine and 6 points on your licence. (www.gov.uk) If you are 

a relatively new driver or already have penalty points on your licence you could end up off the road by 

incurring 6 or more points. Your case could also go to court and you could be disqualified from driving 

or riding and get a maximum fine of £1000. Drivers of buses or goods vehicle could get a maximum 

fine of £2,500. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The penalties for drink and drug 

driving are the same. You will receive a 12-month driving ban, an unlimited fine, up to 6 months in 

prison for some offences, a criminal record. A driver found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving 

will go to prison for up to 14 years. If you drive for work, your employer will see the conviction when 

you show them your licence. Careless and inconsiderate driving. There is no standard list that would 

be considered as careless or inconsiderate driving, however, the General Advice section of the 

Highway Code provides good examples. Any breach of the Highway Code could be treated as an

Lynmouth lifeboat movie, “Louisa, An Amazing Adventure”, 

has its premiere in Lynton 

The story of the overland launch of the Lynmouth lifeboat 

Louisa was shown at Lynton Cinema in January to coincide 

with the 120 th anniversary of the launch. 

The movie by Great British Entertainment Ltd is music 

driven with no dialogue and is the culmination of 12 years 

work by producers Dave and Maz Reynolds, and is directed 

and animated by Lynton based Ken Blakey.

A new wave of energy projects are set to 

be delivered across the South West by a 

consortium that includes Devon County 

Council. Almost £2 million has been 

awarded to Bristol City Council in 

partnership with Devon County Council 

and Plymouth City Council. 

The €1.9 million grant from the European 

Investment Bank and the European 

Commission will fund new energy 

efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable 

transport and heat networks projects 

across Bristol, Devon, Plymouth and the 

wider region over the next three years. 

This is the second successful funding bid 

from the European Local Energy 

Assistance (ELENA) facility to the South 

West but the first with a multiple authority 

focus and will kick-start a number of new 

energy projects across the region. This 

will mean hundreds of projects to improve

Methodist Hall, Minehead, a short story competition with separate classes for adults 

and children will be organised in advance of the festival. 

The children’s competition is organised by West Somerset Academies Trust and 

supported by the local creative writing group Café Write. 

Children aged between 5 and 9 years old are invited to write a short, illustrated 

story or poem of no more than 250 words, entitled ‘The Magic Train’. 

Children aged 10 to 15 years old are invited to compose a short story or poem of 

up to 500 words with the theme ‘The Day all the Teachers Disappeared’. 

The theme for adults (16+) is ‘Minehead: Gateway to Exmoor’ and this 

competition is run in collaboration with the creative writing group, Minehead 

Writers. Type-written entries of no more than 500 words are invited from those 

aged 16 and over, and may be either prose or poetry. 

Only one entry for each competitor should be submitted, providing name, age 

(optional in the adult class) and contact details on a separate sheet, to ensure 

judging anonymity. 

All children’s entries should be sent either by email to 

mineheadliteraryfestival@gmail.com or by post to West Somerset Academies 

Trust, Minehead Middle School, Ponsford Road, Minehead TA24 5RH (and marked 

‘Literary Competition’). Adult entries should be sent by email to 

mineheadliteraryfestival@gmail.com or by post to Literary Festival Competition, 2 

Hillview Road, Minehead TA24 8EG. 

All entries must be received no later than March 31, 2019. 

Winners will be announced at Minehead Literary Festival on the April 27 and 

winning entries will be published in the West Somerset Free Press and displayed 

in Minehead Library.

New Year's Eve had to be a bit of a jolly-up and Lynmouth was appropriately 

jollied- up with bands in the 'Bath' and the 'Village' and lots of people having fun. 

Personally I found the group of formation vomiting Swahili singers very entertaining. 

But despite the crowd in Lynmouth, 

Gary at the 'Cottage’ enticed a good crowd 

by offering his usual excellent beer together 

with the superb guitarist/singer Aaron 

Spiers. As with many solo entertainers now 

he used a loop machine to create his 

backing tracks as he went along. The 

machine sported more pedals and knobs 

than the mightiest of 'Mighty Wurlitzers'. 

Aaron hopped from one control to the other 

without touching the ground in between with 

the skill and flair of Fred Astaire. The crowd 

dutifully cheered and clapped and sang and 

danced and did all the things that the 

celebration requires. Next day there were no doubt lots of headaches, regrets and 

missed appointments but that is what it's all about!

Christ Church Plough Sunday 

Dr Mark Butchers, Archdeacon of Barnstaple, and assisted by Reverend Samantha, 

conducted the Plough Sunday service at Christ Church. Young people of Blackmoor 

Gate Young Farmers brought the plough into the church and gave some of the 

readings. 

In his address, referring to lines in the readings naming the parts of the plough, 

Dr Mark explained how the introduction of the plough had revolutionised agriculture 

but God provided the resources and man then used them. The plough represented 

human innovation, a faith in the future, peaceful co-existence and community 

co-operation. 

Thank you to members of Blackmoor Gate Young Farmers for their contribution, 

members of PCC for tea, coffee and very nice cake, young Rian ringing the bells, and 

all members of Lyn Churches who came along.

Snowdrop Valley 2019 

Snowdrop Valley is a privately owned remote valley in a hidden part of Exmoor close to 

Wheddon Cross. The Badgworthy Land Company kindly allow access to the valley while 

the beautiful carpet of snowdrops is in bloom. Snowdrop Valley will be open from 

Saturday 2 February until Sunday 3 March inclusive. 

The Park and Ride buses will be running from Saturday 9 February until Sunday 24 

February inclusive. Return Trip - £6 Adult, £5 Senior Citizen, £2 Children 5-15, Free for 

under 5's. Dogs carried at the driver's discretion. Waiting times may vary during busy 

periods. 

Buses are not able to take mobility scooters or wheelchairs,but for visitors with mobility 

problems we can arrange passes to allow you to drive your own vehicle into the valley 

during 2 to 8 February and 25 February to 3 March. Please contact

Car Parking - £2 per car to include one walking map, all parking in Exmoor Farmers
