Modernism Week <strong>2019</strong><br />

Events include special presentation and<br />

multi-day photo exhibition<br />

Modernism Week, the <strong>February</strong> festival that highlights midcentury<br />

modern architecture, art, interior design, landscape architecture, and<br />

vintage culture in the Palm Springs area, will offer a <strong>February</strong> 19th<br />

presentation and an ongoing special photography exhibition celebrating<br />

the work of iconic landscape architect Dan Kiley.<br />

In a career spanning from WWII through the dot com era, Kiley produced<br />

more than 1,300 built and unbuilt works, and contributed centrally to<br />

the shape and definition of the American modernist landscape.<br />

‘A Walk in Nature: The Landscape and Architecture of Dan Kiley’<br />

The Kiley-related programing will commence with ‘A Walk in Nature:<br />

The Landscape and Architecture of Dan Kiley,’ presented by author<br />

and educator Jane Amidon. The talk will offer an overview of Kiley’s<br />

approach to landscape design and discuss highlights of the iconic<br />

projects featured in the related Dan Kiley exhibit.<br />

Amidon is the founding editor of ‘Source Books in Landscape<br />

Architecture’ and writes about modern and contemporary landscape<br />

architecture and urbanism practices. She is also the author of ‘Dan Kiley,’<br />

a forthcoming volume in the Masters of Modern Landscape Design series<br />

published by the University of Georgia Press in association with the<br />

Library of American Landscape History.<br />

The presentation will be held on Tuesday, <strong>February</strong> 19 at 3 pm at the<br />

UCR Palm Desert Main Theater, Building B, located at 75080 Frank<br />

Sinatra Drive in Palm Desert, California.<br />

“The Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley,” a free<br />

photography exhibit<br />

Following the presentation, Kiley and his legacy will be honored with the<br />

free photography exhibition ‘The Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan<br />

Kiley,’ which will be on view at UCR Palm Desert in Building B starting<br />

<strong>February</strong> 19.<br />

Organized by The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) in Washington,<br />

D.C., the exhibition features 45 newly commissioned photographs of 27<br />

of Kiley’s designs including: the Miller House and Garden, Columbus,<br />

IN; the Art Institute of Chicago South Garden, Chicago, IL; and one of<br />

his final residential projects, Patterns, a garden for Gov. & Mrs. Pierre S.<br />

“Pete” du Pont IV in Delaware.
