A young boy, Billy, is troubled by
moving from foster parent to foster
parent until he finds a family
with another foster child who is
disabled. His new ‘brother’ asked
him, “if you could have any super
power, what would it be?” Billy
says, “Flying.”
Bullying at school and in subways
on the way home persists.
While on the subway, Billy has
a supernatural experience. He
realizes something is happening
to him, and as the subway doors
automatically open he sees a
whole new world. It appears to be
a dark underworld. There a sage
type centurian convinces Billy to
‘take the torch’ and then humorously
forces Billy to say the word:
“SHAZAM”.
Billy goes through a metamorphosis
of sorts and suddenly he
is a muscular thirty year old with
a new set of digs to wear. Billy is
now dressed as SHAZAM and in
disbelief, he races home to show
his new brother!
And so their adventure together
begins. Or should we say the
learning curve begins?
Billy smashed through a concrete
barrier to learn he has super
strength. The next thing he learns
is that his dream has come true
and SHAZAM can fly! He also has
electricity that can shoot out from
his fingertips. Billy enjoys shooting
at peoples’ cell phones in the mall
saying, “Your phone is charged!”
The humor and adventure continues
when he and his brother are
in a store while it is being robbed.
SHAZAM is shot at by the robbers,
but the bullet is just repelled off his
chest and he shouts, “I am bulletproof!”
SHAZAM is a fun movie to watch
and light-hearted in nature. Take
the whole family to see it! You will
have a fun day adventuring and
reminiscing about the film as your
day slides by.

approved the opening of The 420
Lounge. It opened late last fall. It is
a place where one may not only purchase,
but publically partake cannibus
products in the company of friends.
Owned by the siblings, Lenny Montante,
and Julie Montante, the lounge is a delightful
fresh take on the relatively new
California 21+ recreational cannibus
phenomenon! Green is the new red!
One of the first of its kind, the lounge
is stylishly tucked behind the specialty
deli, On the Mark, at 777 North Palm
Canyon Drive, in the hip Uptown District
of Palm Springs. Surrounded by
art galleries and trendy eateries, like
Shag Gallery, and TRIO Restaurant, it
is a great place to meet up with your
friends, regroup after dinner, or just
stop in for a ‘quickie’!
The lounge is staffed with some of
the most knowledgeable bud-tenders
around. They can provide the product
information you need to choose the
most appropriate cannibus for you,

to be Featured During
Modernism Week 2019
Events include special presentation and
multi-day photo exhibition
Modernism Week, the February festival that highlights midcentury
modern architecture, art, interior design, landscape architecture, and
vintage culture in the Palm Springs area, will offer a February 19th
presentation and an ongoing special photography exhibition celebrating
the work of iconic landscape architect Dan Kiley.
In a career spanning from WWII through the dot com era, Kiley produced
more than 1,300 built and unbuilt works, and contributed centrally to
the shape and definition of the American modernist landscape.
‘A Walk in Nature: The Landscape and Architecture of Dan Kiley’
The Kiley-related programing will commence with ‘A Walk in Nature:
The Landscape and Architecture of Dan Kiley,’ presented by author
and educator Jane Amidon. The talk will offer an overview of Kiley’s
approach to landscape design and discuss highlights of the iconic
projects featured in the related Dan Kiley exhibit.
Amidon is the founding editor of ‘Source Books in Landscape
Architecture’ and writes about modern and contemporary landscape
architecture and urbanism practices. She is also the author of ‘Dan Kiley,’
a forthcoming volume in the Masters of Modern Landscape Design series
published by the University of Georgia Press in association with the
Library of American Landscape History.
The presentation will be held on Tuesday, February 19 at 3 pm at the
UCR Palm Desert Main Theater, Building B, located at 75080 Frank
Sinatra Drive in Palm Desert, California.
“The Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley,” a free
photography exhibit
Following the presentation, Kiley and his legacy will be honored with the
free photography exhibition ‘The Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan
Kiley,’ which will be on view at UCR Palm Desert in Building B starting
February 19.
Organized by The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) in Washington,
D.C., the exhibition features 45 newly commissioned photographs of 27
of Kiley’s designs including: the Miller House and Garden, Columbus,
IN; the Art Institute of Chicago South Garden, Chicago, IL; and one of
his final residential projects, Patterns, a garden for Gov. & Mrs. Pierre S.
“Pete” du Pont IV in Delaware.

and legacy is available on TCLF’s website,

The exhibition also calls attention to the need for informed
and effective stewardship of his work (and by extension
Modernist landscape architecture). The exhibition will
continue to run through April 19. Open hours will typically
be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This is the first time that Modernism Week has partnered
with UCR Palm Desert and the exhibition organizer The
Cultural Landscape Foundation.
Tickets are $20. To make the ride to-and-from Palm
Desert more enjoyable, Modernism Week will
offer special luxury round-trip transportation from
CAMP, Modernism Week’s central hub in downtown
Palm Springs, to UCR Palm Desert. Tickets for

About Dan Kiley
Dan Kiley (1912-2004) was one of the nation’s most
important post-war landscape architects. He was
visionary adept at everything from large-scale urban
planning to private residential projects. He rarely
approached landscape architecture as an autonomous
pursuit, focusing instead on the expression of
mutual relationships between site, architecture and
environment, often in collaboration with eminent
modern architects and deeply engaged clients. Kiley
was inspired by the productive tension he found
between the rationalism of classically-derived garden
elements, such as the French baroque allée, bosque,
tapis vert, ramp, pool and court, and dynamic site
phenomena such as light and shadow, seasonal change
and textural contrast. Kiley’s award-winning projects
include the St. Louis Arch grounds, Oakland Museum
gardens, Fountain Place in Dallas, the South Garden
at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Miller House
gardens in Columbus, Indiana.
During his prolific career, which spanned more than half
a century, he worked with equally significant architects,
including Eero Saarinen, Louis Kahn and I.M. Pei, to
create internationally acknowledged Modernist design
icons. Kiley’s legacy is substantial, influential and, like
the broad swath of our Modernist designed landscape
legacy, ephemeral.

Valley students pursuing college educations in the fields
of architecture and design; as well as giving grants
to local and state organizations for their efforts to
preserve modernist architecture throughout the state
