KATA KATA
CARTOON MAGAZINE
Kata Kata is an authentic African cartoon
magazine with both online and printed versions.
In a humorous way, Kata Kata tries to discuss and
sensitize typical African / global socio - political
issues, mainly through illustrations, animations etc.
Furthermore, through its social network (Kata Kata
Community), it tries to keep those cultural entities
alive by stimulating personal interactions and
exchange of ideas amongst the readers.
At the same time, Kata Kata equally offers a maxim
that life is perhaps not all about seriousness. One
needs some laughs and relaxation to face serious
challenges in life.
The duality of Kata Kata is such that it tries to discuss
serious issues, at the same time, it offers a therapy for
the problems through laughter.
The quarterly printed edition of Kata Kata is widely
available in the Netherlands and some countries
in Europe. Equally, the digital version of Kata Kata
can also be read online or subscribed to via Kata
Kata website or Magzter, the world’s largest digital
I HEAR YOU
One who causes others misfortune also
teaches them wisdom. ( African proverb)
Every misfortune has a positive side; we
learn from it.. (Meaning)
TELL ME SOMETHING
Publisher’s
note
Be authentic and the rest follows
There is
Religion
an adage in the Ibo society
And
of Nigeria,
Semantics
which says that what one has
learned is better than what they have copied. When something is copied, the
proverb explains, the authenticity and full control over it is lost.
On a personal level, more often than not, we do things, simply because others do
the same; or we take such an action to satisfy the expectations of others, without
first considering the impacts of it on ourselves. It is time to go for that exclusive,
flashy car, simply because my neighbour has the same. Well, have I considered
the financial muscle of my neighbour? Am I financially capable of maintaining
such an expensive car? More than that, where lies my priority? To first buy a car,
re-polish my social status, albeit temporarily, and perhaps sleep on the street
after 6 months due to my inability or limited resources to pay for my house
rent? How about the school fees and personal expenses for the upbringing of my
children? Likewise, must I vote for a candidate I personally consider dishonest,
incompetent and corrupt simply because others voted for them? How much
control do I have over the future actions of such a leader?
In many African and the Third World Countries, policies are often copied from
other countries, without relating them to the socio-political realities on the
ground in the African lands, simply because the same policies are popular or
have been successful in those foreign countries. Structures are raised, not because
they have meaningful contributions to or impacts in the lives of the citizens, but
rather the same structures exist elsewhere. Engineering, medical, architectural
courses are offered in the various African university, yet foreign engineers,
doctors, architects are imported abroad to manage structures, hospitals in Africa.
African leaders would rather travel abroad for medical treatments rather than
relying on the ability of their local experts, who studied in African universities.
What level of trust do African leaders have on the ability and authenticity of their
fellow African experts? If leaders do not believe in the abilities of their experts,
how does one expect the citizens to trust the same local experts?
Authenticity begins with excelling in a field and believing in yourself and your
ability. It is that consistency that brings creativity; the natural characteristic that
markets your personality. No one can believe in you if you do not believe in
yourself and ability. Authenticity is, equally, that ability to say a big no, if and
when necessary. Decisions should not and never must be made based on the
sentiments and intentions to satisfy the expectations of others; rather, actions
should be taken because they are right and will bring the best results.
Failure to heed the above simple realities comes at a huge price. No clear
policies on the ground, lack of basic social services, crumbling infrastructures,
unnecessary and wasteful spending, lack of trust in the system. You name them.
Agama should have known better, that going on a holiday, simply to satisfy his
neighbours and create a different image for himself comes with costs. It is time to
rush to the Kata Kata Village and warn Agama and the family to reconsider their
decision before it is too late. Unfortunately, we cannot rely on Agama’s wife to
deliver this urgent warning for an obvious reason. If you want the best for Agama
and the Kata Kata Village as a whole, join me and talk to Agama. Leaving now….
CODEINE:
That sweet
harmful
syrup
By Tumwine Edward
Codeine and Lean have
become a harmful obsession
among the youth in Africa. Partly
due to a lot of exposure from the
Western world that portrays a
lot of its usage in music videos
and movies, it has grappled many
youths in thinking it is trendy
and okay. Codeine is an opioid
drug often used as a cough
suppressant or mild analgesic and
it is also a pain-relief prescription
medicine. When consumed in
large quantities it has devastating
effects such as multiple seizures
and hallucinations, which could
drive people into a state of
paranoia, leaving users in a state of
euphoria.
Across Africa, from Nigeria, where the
government has placed a ban on its
production after a highly publicized
BBC documentary of its devastating
effects in Nigeria went viral on the
net, to Uganda, where efforts are being
made to curtail its usage, codeine syrup
has become a time-bomb in Africa,
waiting to explode. The highly addictive
syrup is considered a gateway drug to
other opiates, including the incredibly
dangerous heroin and morphine. The
cough syrup is used to make “purple
drank,” which is a recreational form of
the drug, made by mixing prescriptiongrade
(codeine) cough syrup with soft
drinks, such as Sprite or Mountain Dew,
for consumption in large doses. It is also
called lean, syrup and sizzurp. Sadly,
codeine is often used by so many rappers
and movie stars, who glorify its in-take
and even brag at how much control they
have over it. But codeine syrup is not as
harmless as these celebrities would want
you to believe. An overdose could have
devastating effects.
The symptoms of an overdose include,
but not limited to:
Difficulty in breathing
Chest Pain
Severe Sleepiness
Loss of Consciousness
Slow or irregular Heartbeat
Blue Lips or Skin
Excessive use of the syrup resulting in
any combination of these symptoms
may be a signal that your body has had
more of the drug than it can tolerate. If
vomiting or excessive drowsiness become
issues, speak with a physician.
What makes codeine very dangerous is
as an opiate, its users can easily develop
a tolerance and eventually, dependence
on it. Although many people begin using
codeine to relieve a legitimate condition,
it is frequently abused as tolerance
develops.
Mass sensitization of the effects of the
drug is highly recommended. Equally,
addiction centers to take care of
victims of the epidemic syrup, which
is spreading like a wildfire among the
youth is urgently needed. Sadly, there is
very limited information out there on
the danger of the syrup, hence many a
youth are hooked to it simply because
they want to emulate their pop star idols,
who consume it. In 2013, codeine syrup
made headlines when it was reported
that the American rapper Lil Wayne (real
names: Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. ) had
overdosed on the medication and was
having multiple seizures aboard a flight
and has had two more episodes after
that. Stay away from codeine syrup. Stay
awake. Stay Woke!!
AGAMA’S FAMILY GOES ON A HOLIDAY
Agama’s wife is playing a chase game with her female friend.
You want to surrender
of you still want to
challenge my IQ?
No way!
No surrender
Okitibamba!
Since when have you turned
my house into a den of
the casino?
I’ve told you, you need to
upgrade your brain to the
I- phone level before you go
near a chase ?
Excuse me! Upgrade what?
Well, you might wish to upgrade
yours if you have one.
Woman, watch your mouth and
respect my house rules….
Your house?
You and this your
“my” – “my”…
You want me to say
“your” – “ your”
before?
Always the same “ my house, my wife, my
children .. The only thing you don’t say is “my
turn to cook” or “ my clothes to wash …”
No, I don’t say that because I respect my
wife a lot. Don’t want to interfere with
her task. I am a respectful gentle
husband and…
woman! I thought you were a Christian.
Or you never read if your mouth would
make you to sin, plug it out and…….
Gentle rubbish!!
8 Kata kata cartoon magazine Issue 19 SEPT 2018 www.katakata.org

If you had plugged off
yours, Kata Kata village
would have saved more
than a million liters of
beer and…
Woman! Since when did you enter
into a holy or unholy marriage
with beer? I’ve told you to let
the sleeping beer lie….
You hear the
popcorn tongue of your best
friend cracking inside her mouth
like in a magnatron?
Is that how you treat your
husband at home?
You are lucky she only
uses her mouth.
Me, I use my legs and fists
And he has forgotten the way
to your parents’ house to ask
for his dowry back?
And the woman who
married a useless man is
called what? Stupid
woman?
Useless man!
You called me stupid?
I am a Christian,
so I don’t lie
Don’t worry, I will
show you I am smarter
than you..
Alakwa!
I’ve forgotten you were related to Solomon.
I can see it, after all, Chase game is meant
for intelligent people…
Ha-ha
You’ll regret!
I did already. After
paying for your
dowry…..
Flashback
Each time I ask for money or want to go
argument :
“ I don‛t have money” or I‛ve spent all the money on Nza”
Don’t you see
blood all over
me?
Blood???
Yes, I am still bleeding
almost 30 years after
paying for your dowry
1 month later….
Guess what?
The pope is
I better don’t tell you what
the neighbours are saying
about you
And you think I care about
the stupid neighbours?
Me? Agama stupid?
Do they know who they
are talking about?
Stupid?
No, they think you are
But that is not even all.
They even said you were
The most shocking thing is
that they said you were too
Or they want me to prove
that too with…..
“Who will pay for such a long holiday”?
Agama’s wife is packing for the long expected holiday
“Oh my love, Oh my love. When shall I forget my lover?
When shall I forget my beautiful lover?
I will never forget my sweet lover. Oh my love…….”
Eee! How come your bitter mouth
What do you mean?
Is it a crime to shower
Eee! Since when have you decided to
shower, pomade and even powder
your husband with romantic praises?
Haba!
Why are you always
negative?
I am not always negative, just
like you are not always
a romantic bird…
Ahaa! No wonder why this premature
romanticism. Before your neigbours would
tell you Agama did this or that, I don’t want
you to turn this holiday into a shopping
bonanza
You start again with your complaint. Sometimes, I am
tempted to believe our neighbours who think you are
too stingy, conservative and old for a holiday
Tempted? Since when are you devil’s best
friend? Woman, don’t tell me you’re planning
a holiday coup with the neighbours!
12.00am: Nza cannot sleep because he is excited to go
on a holiday. He cannot wait ….
Papa, isn’t it
time to go?
Go where?
Do you have a mixture of
THE RETURN
OF
Fanny
Packs
A fanny pack is a
small bag attached to
a belt which you wear
around your hips or
waist. You use it to
carry personal items
such as money and
keys.
It is sometimes said that
fashion comes, goes and
come back. The latest
demand for fanny packs as
a new fashion trend has
proved the saying right.
By Tumwine Edward
Fanny packs are back in style and I can’t
be happier by the thought of this. Seen
by many in the beginning as a goofy
European style, the packs have finally
descended upon Africa and everyone
wants to possess one each time the
conversation comes up.
They have a become a cultured must
have accessory by almost all celebrities
today with re-known fashion labels
making trendy fits for the pack. It
caught my attention the first time on the
hit America Dance Crew Series which
had a dance crew named after the bags.
They always performed with the bags
and always added choreography that
highlighted why they are a must need.
In many African countries,
especially Uganda, the culture
has really picked up especially
with the youths trying to identify
with the new trend. So many
Ugandans are seen adding it to
their outfits as they attend many
of the events that light up the
city. Its portable nature makes
it a – must – have. Don’t forget
the security element as well.
Its security advantage can’t be
under-estimated; it helps keep
all necessary items together as
you go about your business in
sometimes tense situations.
Nothing better than somewhere you
can put your phone, loose change
and personal ID in a crowded place!
It is sometimes said that fashion
latest demand for fanny packs as a
seemed quite odd wearing one but
like the saying goes, it’s only a matter
Beauty
By Arthur Adil
smile is a deal breaker for any of us
and that’s why having a clean smile
is priceless. Body language experts
have proven from time to time that an infectious
smile gets you into places you would have never
imagined. A key element to this is having your
teeth well clean! Every time you smile, your teeth
communicate a lot about you and most times, the
cleaner the teeth, the better the smile. Just think
about it for a second, wouldn’t you want a milliondollar
smile?
Well, we can’t go about this without emphasizing
the importance of proper dental care enough. Clean
teeth, rid us of foul smell, bacterial infection and a
less compromising smile.
Check out
that a million-dollar
smile!
Visit a dentist regularly to have your teeth checked
and monitored to prevent any decay because its
effects can be fatal with terrible migraines. Flossing
of the teeth is highly commendable to keep small
particles that remain hidden between teeth gaps
and this can be done after every meal.
Body language
experts have
proven from time
to time that
an infectious
smile gets you
into places you
would have never
imagined.
Keeping your lips moisturized is also very key
in terms of having an infectious smile. The gents
really don’t take time to have this, but it really is
important to have smooth lips to prevent bacterial
infections too. Dry lips are susceptible to cracks
which are inlets that can destroy your lips and
mouth. Passing some balm over your lips and
regular intake of fresh water are remedies you
can undertake to have your lips moisturized at
all times. It’s essential to have these two elements,
coordinating to have that game-changing smile.
Go out there, clean your teeth, take fresh water,
smile more, and watch you move places!
Office Space and design is a true testament to how
you want your organization portrays to everyone
who comes around. It is simply a huge PR stunt for
companies that know the importance and impact
of an office space to their identity and perception.
It’s essential your official sets an atmosphere of
calmness and welcoming reception to whoever
comes. It doesn’t require a fat budget to achieve this
rather than paying attention to details and working
the right architect or interior designer to execute
your ideas fit the kind of workspace you want to
have.
Companies invest millions in image protection
and how they can penetrate markets through
quality service providence, but it is said that charity
begins at home. Clients who come to interact with
you at your work premises should have the first
feeling of a sense of assurance that you are able to
execute the business they are bringing to you; this is
telepathically transferred through the ambiance of
your workspace.
Office interior space should communicate business
acumen and a comfortable negotiation ambience.
Clients should feel comfortable while discussing
different aspects of business without having an
air of disbelief in your capabilities. Dim vibrant
colours give off a good spin because they aren’t too
influences people’s moods and energy on
TECHNOLOGY
Yaaka Digital Learning Software
By Tumwine Edward
Finding solutions to global challenges is a key challenge technology came into place to
solve. Education is still very much a concern in the Third World countries. According to
the UNESCO, an alarming 2 OUT OF10 children, for example, are able to receive a quality
education in Uganda. Having this and other realities in mind, a couple of software have been
developed to ease the education process and have quality education accessible to Ugandans.
Yaaka Digital Network has helped
students studying in areas with
a poor internet connection;
it enables them to access all
this learning material without
connecting to the Internet.
These new innovative ideas could help student’s
performances to improve drastically.
A software launched in 2013, Yaaka
Digital Network (ww.yaaka.cc) is
a digital learning platform where
teachers and students can access
and share interactive learning
material.
Built and designed in line with
the Ugandan syllabus, the
learning platform has courses
from Pre-primary to University
level input in multimedia format,
for example, using videos and
graphics, links to give a student a
wholesome learning experience.
I am privileged to have done a
short course on cake making,
which is under the catering course
on the site. Absolutely, I can say
the material is well packaged and
aligned to help a student to grasp.
Available offline too, Yaaka Digital
Network has helped students
studying in areas with a poor
internet connection; it enables
them to access all this learning
material without connecting to the
Internet. This is a very important
and useful part of the software,
which does not limit it to the rich
or those with internet access.
It arguably brings the learning
process and possibilities to the
grassroots level.
With familiarisation of technology to kids,
could see the gap of lliteracy being filled.
principles that otherwise would have
to be provided for the betterment of our
HOLD
By Michael Donkor
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED: 2018
AUTHOR: Michael Donkor
GENRE: Literature
Michael Donkor’s novel, Hold
is a brilliant narrative of two
worlds – Africa and Europe –
and the conflicts the characters
encounter trying to fit into the
worlds. Set in Ghana and London,
Hold carefully captures an
intimate and powerful journey
of coming-of-age of 17-year-old
Belinda a house girl, who through
friendship and family, shame
and forgiveness, goes through
learning and maturity in life. With
life split between two worlds
(Africa and Europe), Belinda goes
through tests in life and path
of maturity from a house girl
in Daban, Kumasi, Ghana, for a
wealthy couple, she calls Aunty
and Uncle, to become a chaperone
style friend to wild child Amma
in London. It is worth mentioning
the careful portrayal of Amma’s
characteristics, especially, her
struggle with her sexuality in
the novel. Both journeys and
experience have become an
important lesson to Belinda, and
equally created a lasting impact
in her life.
Some critics have pointed out
the plot and the beginning of
the book as difficult and - some
insist - rather confusing. Perhaps
that is a literary technique
employed by the writer to vividly
narrate Belinda’s confused social
and psychological experience.
Others complain that the novel
has no easy closure. Regardless,
Michael Donkor’s early childhood
background in Ghana and his later
life in London go a long way in
portraying the challenges Belinda
faces. For those who might find
the plot and end of the novel
difficult, perhaps the novelist is
indirectly inviting them to share
his personal conflicts trying to
adopt in the two worlds.
This year me and my family went
on a vacation to the United
States of America. It was amazing
because the US is so different from
our home country. It was a whole
new experience. We visited two of
the 50 states in the US; Arizona and
California. This is what we saw in
America.
The first state we visited was Arizona,
we went to the city Phoenix. Even
though it was very hot, I still enjoyed
myself. We had a great time in
Arizona. On the first day we visited
a place called Scottsdale. It had a
real western vibe and I loved it. We
had dinner at a place called David’s,
the food was delicious! We ate one
of America’s most popular dishes:
hamburgers. After our meal we went
to a shopping mall where we stayed
for the rest of the day. The next day
were filled with other activities. Such
as visiting the Grand Canyon. This
was one of the most spectacular
things i’ve ever done in my whole life.
Even though it was a very long ride
from Phoenix (about 5 hours!), it was
totally worth it.
The second state we visited was
California, we stayed in Los Angeles,
one of the most populated cities of the
US. Even though Los Angeles
wasn’t as hot as
Phoenix, it is still hot.
We did many things
in Los Angeles, but
one of the greatest
things we did was
visiting Beverly Hills.
There are many
celebrities that live
in Beverly Hills, and
i can imagine why:
it so beautiful! We
went there twice,
and we even managed
to see a few houses of
celebrities (Katy Perry,
Jackie Chan, Leonardo
DiCaprio and Jack Nichelson.).We
visited some famous movie sets as
well. For example the set where the
movies ‘’Sister Act’’ and ‘’Pretty
Women’’ where shot.We really enjoyed
Santa Monica Pier as well, we had
a blast! Even though Los Angeles
sounds very nice, there are some bad
parts as well. And there are a lot of
homeless people too, that can be quite
depressing sometimes. But overall, it
was an amazing experience.
Our trip to the US was one of the
most joyful trips we ever took. The
people in America are very friendly
(where we stayed), and the food is
just amazing and cheap. So if you ever
decide to go to America, we highly
recommend Phoenix and Los Angeles!
The World
Moves to Turin
with Ronaldo
By Tumwine Edward
Turin the majestic first capital
city of Italy from 1861 to 1865,
which lies in the northern part
of the country, is indisputably one
of the business and cultural pillars
of Italy. Located in the western bank
of Po River, next to the Susa Valley
and beautifully circled by the western
Alpine arch and Superga Hill, Turin
has the charm, beauty and panoramic
view every tourist looks for in a city.
With a population of 1.7 million
inhabitants, Turin possesses a rich
cultural and historical entities that rival
it from other European cities. From
huge palaces, old historical churches,
numerous art galleries, famous opera
houses, uncountable restaurants
and unique, impressive architecture
dating from the Renaissance, Baroque,
Rococo, Neoclassical periods, little
wonder why a part of the historical
center of Turin (Residences of the
Royal House of Savoy) is listed as one
of the World Heritage sites.
Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Juventus for a club
record fee of £99.2million. The 33-year-old superstar
completed his £99.2million move to the Bianconeri in
July after nine goal-laden seasons at Real Madrid.
That is not all. Before becoming the capital city of unified Italy from 1861 to 1865, Turin was the capital of the Duchy
of Savoy. It is, therefore, not a coincidence that the city is home to the best universities, academies, colleges, lycea, and
gymnasia in Italy. Amongst the academic institutions, is the University of Turin, arguably, the best university in Italy,
which was founded in the 15th century. Others are the Turin Polytechnic, Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners - ICIF,
ESCP Europe Business School, the world’s first business school, which was founded in 1819 by a group of economic
scholars and businessmen, amongst them the renowned economist Jean-Baptiste Say and Vital Roux, a well-known
business tycoon.
“
I’m here because it’s a brand new challenge for my
career. It’s a big club and usually players of my
age go to Qatar or to China, with all due respect, so
coming to such an important and outstanding club
at this point in my career makes me very happy.
That’s why I’m very grateful to Juventus for this
opportunity because I can go on with my career.”
If the establishment of the ESCP ESCP
Europe Business School in Turin did
not contribute to the elevation of the
status of the city, the school attracted
many scholars around the world. It is
therefore not a coincidence that Turin
became one of the European commercial
zones, and indeed part of the famous
“industrial triangle” along with Milan
and Genoa. Ranked third in Italy, after
Milan and Rome, Turin is one of the
economic powerhouses of the country,
a home to Fiat, the famous Italian
automobile company together with other
manufacturers of Lancia and Alfa Romeo.
In terms of sports, Turin is a force to
reckon with. Apart from hosting the 2006
Winter Olympics, Turin is the birthplace
of, perhaps, the best, most consistent
and domineering football club in Italy,
Juventus F.C. The club, the pride of
Turin, has not only produced some of the
best footballers in Italy, many football
juggernauts have played for the famous
club. With the enviable history, culture
and touristic attractions of Turin, it is not
strange that Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably
the best footballer in the world today has
turned down millions of dollar offers from
many football clubs around the world and
chose for Juventus. Definitely, the arrival
of Ronaldo to the club is expected to bring
a major economic boom not only for the
club but the city as well.
The mention of Cristiano Ronaldo’s
name echoes an aura of greatness and
stardom that you can only feel with a few
footballers still playing the game at the
highest level. The Portuguese talisman has
broken all records and barriers in football
and that’s why NIKE has to pay him a
good cheque to keep him comfortable
with the brand. Lifting both his country
and previous clubs he has played for, he
is the epitome of football professionalism
and hard work.
Juventus FC did their best summer
transfer business in a long time by
announcing the arrival of Cristiano
Ronaldo to the old lady. The Portuguese
attacker will wear the black and white
straps for the Italian Champions and it
doesn’t get bigger and better than this.
Fresh from winning his 3rd consecutive
Champions League title with Real Madrid,
it was perfect for him to try out a new
challenge and which better place to do it
than at Juventus.
Cristiano
Ronaldo
moved to
Juventus
for a club
record fee of
£99.2million
in July after
nine goalladen
seasons
at Real
Madrid.
“It’s one of the best clubs in the world.
It was a well thought-out decision. My
friends told me it was a club I could
play in. That made it an easy decision.
It is the best club in Italy.”
A club rich in history and also
very solid on the pitch, they have
dominated the Italian league
for years and have been very
impressive in Europe thus giving
Ronaldo the right incentives to join
them.
The best thing about this move
is that it’s a huge plus for Italian
football. Having the best player
in the world play in your league
attracts a lot of revenue through
TV streaming rights, and fans
filling up stadiums just to get a
glimpse of the magic Ronaldo has
to offer. Having been hit with a
match-fixing scandal in 2006, this
will be the best time for the league
to redeem itself amongst Europe’s
elite top leagues and you know
Cristiano loves a challenge!
With the arrival of Ronaldo in
Turin, Juventus F.C and the city
cannot be the same financially.
Expect a swarm of tourists visiting
the beautiful city, Juventus matches
sold out, the stadium full to
capacity during Juventus games, an
alarming increase in the sale of the
club’s merchandise. All these mean
more revenue for the club and the
city, increase income for the local
businesses, especially restaurants
and hotels. Let’s see what the
Portuguese maestro has in store for
us. For sure, the future is bright for
Turin and all it has to offer to the
world.
Foods
Ugandan Rolex
By Tumwine Edward
Uganda is best known worldwide for two
things; good weather and the Rolex delicacy.
Many are usually amazed how this food
obtains the same name as the luxury Swiss
watch, but the irony only makes it more
popular with people all over the world.
A darling to many in Uganda, the Rolex
comprises of eggs and chapati, which are
put together with spices and vegetables like
tomatoes, onions to give you a nourishing
and mouth-watering taste you might not get
over that easily.
Enjoyed by people from all spheres of life,
it is a cheap delicacy that can be acquired
in hard financial times and that’s the
icing on the cake for many of Ugandans
who enjoy this gem. It’s also very popular
among university students obviously for its
cheap price, but also for the bond it creates
amongst themselves as “Rolex Lovers”.
It would be a sin to come
to Uganda and not taste the
Rolex because you will have
not experienced Uganda
to its fullest. Recently
acknowledged by the Tourism
board of Uganda as a national
export, the Rolex has gained
a lot of international media
coverage and even has a Rolex
festival organized in Kampala
that attracts hundreds of
crowds who are treated
to musical performances
and lots of Rolex eating. A
good reason not to miss this
delicacy while in Uganda.
LETTERS
Dear Aunt Silvia,
Thank you for your ever helpful advice.
I am from a polygamous family of 21
children. My father had 4 wives and my
elder brother 2. My father is late, although
my mother is still alive. Two months ago,
my elder brother died of kidney problems,
leaving his two wives behind. According to
our customs, his immediate younger brother
– in this case, myself – must marry or act
Aunt Silvia
as the husband to my late brother’s wives.
Even though I am not yet married, I want
to choose my own wife, and I do not want
anything to do with my late brother’s wives.
I am confused because the pressure is so much
from my family – especially my mother, that
I obey the culture. Please, I need your advice.
Mamoudu Kerewan,
(Gambia)
QUOTES
“Every couple has
ups and downs,
every couple
argues, and that’s
the thing—you’re a
couple, and couples
can’t function
without trust.”
― Nicholas Sparks,
At First Sight
“Life is too short
to waste your
time on people
who don’t respect,
appreciate, and
value you.”
― Roy T. Bennett,
The Light in the
Heart
“People are lonely
because they build
walls instead of
bridges.”
— Joseph F.
Newton Men
Dear Mamoudu,
I fully understand your predicament. I am
an ardent supporter of marriage out of
love, as such, I guess I would have been
in the same debacle if I were to come
from your family. In as much as I would
love you to respect your tradition and
customs, I am of opinion that customs
are made by people for people. It would
be unfair for one to add unnecessary
challenges, burdens, and difficulties in their
lives simply because they want to obey
the customs. Yet, I am not instigating or
suggesting that you abandon your customs.
Perhaps you may wish to find a balance
between fulfilling your cultural expectations
and your own happiness and wishes in a
realistic manner. It is not very clear to
me why you must take over the wives
of your brother. To continue the family
lineage? Or is it because the customs, does
not permit an “intruder,” an “outsider”
or “foreign blood” in the family? Or is
the custom made to assure some degree
of economic protection for the widows
and their children? Regardless, you may
not necessarily have to marry the wives,
if your custom permits that, however,
you may assure them of your financial,
moral and social support, based on your
capability and ability. I cannot imagine a
happy and successful marriage without
love. Since you have made it clear you are
not romantically attracted to these ladies,
you could still show your platonic love
and support for them without necessarily
sleeping with them or having kids for
them.
Despite any help from you, it is advisable
you clearly explain to the ladies the level
and limitation of your help. They should
not expect you to take care of all their
needs; after all, soon you will have your
own family to take care of. Furthermore,
having children comes with huge
responsibilities. The more kids we have,
the more duties and responsibilities. That
goes for the wives of your late brother. If
they decide to have more children they
hardly can take good care of, they will
have many challenges ahead. It is the duty
of every parent to take very good care
of their children. That includes providing
them with quality education, food, shelter,
and a bright future. We all must bear this
in mind before we ever think of having
children.
Perhaps you may wish to find a
balance between fulfilling your
cultural expectations and your
own happiness and wishes in a
realistic manner. It is not very
clear to me why you must take
over the wives of your brother.”
Assure your mother that you love her
and want the best for the family and the
culture, at the same time let her know
you are being realistic with the whole
situation. I am not sure your mother would
rather see her son unhappy, struggling
and saddled with two wives from the late
brother. I believe she would be happy to see
her son with his loved wife, both trying to
give a helping hand to the whole family,
including your mother and the wives of
your late brother. I wish you all the best
with your decisions.
Yours,
Aunt Silvia
