JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019 OHBELOVEDONE.COM THEIR PURPOSE
The story: Elisabeth Elliot was surrounded by
exemplary and active Christians all her life.
During her childhood, her family constantly
housed visiting speakers and missionaries, not
to mention that her parents used to be ones
themselves. As a girl, she secretly hoped that
God would call her to be a missionary – and yes,
He did. Her story – and the story of those who
worked alongside her in Ecuador – is amazing,
and she went on to become a well-loved writer
whose work continues to encourage people to this
day.
a childhood
Elisabeth
Elliot
dream
What we can learn: Sometimes God gives us
those guiding dreams, especially if we give our
desires to Him and ask Him to give us His desires.
I also believe that we are placed exactly where we
are supposed to be and that He has given many of
us the childhood that will shape us for that what
is to come. So (just maybe) your childhood dream
wasn’t just a childhood dream, but a sign of your
lifelong calling.
trial &
error Amy Carmichael
The story: Amy Carmichael was already serving
the people who lived in the Irish and English
slums, but after hearing God tell her to go, she
went – but at first, not to the country or the
mission we remember her so well for. Initially,
she tried China. Her poor health prevented her.
Then she traveled to Japan, but after a couple of
successful years, illness drove her away. She went
to Ceylon (Sri Lanka), but that wasn’t it either.
After many disappointments and “detours”, she
finally found her home – India. And that’s where
she spent the rest of life.
What we can learn: Someone once said that
instead of waiting around our whole lives to find
out exactly what kind of plan God has for us, we
should go find where God is working and join
in. Essentially, experiment. Trial and error. Just
go and find out. He’ll lead you. I can’t say that
it wasn’t God’s will for Amy to go to Japan or
Ceylon – maybe he meant for her to take that
“detour”. Maybe it was her mistake, but I doubt
it. I believe that as long as you’re listening to him,
you can’t go that far wrong.
