Editor’s Letter
The future is digital; if you are still in analogue
mode, ‘you are on a long thing’, apologies, D’Banj.
There is a digital revolution going on, with ‘AI’ ruling
the world, many of us would be out of work because
our jobs have been taken over by ‘robots.’
If you are in your sixties, no need to bother
yourself, you can never wrap your head around the
trail of jargon that defines the digital age, better
focus on retirement and let the digital newborns enjoy
the New World.
Our cover personality ,Temiloluwa Sobowale is a
digital guru. Sobowale was the first individual in Africa
certified by Google in 2010 in four areas -Search
Marketing, Display Advertising Reporting and Analysis
and Google Analytics. So, he is the right person to open
slumbering eyes to the New World. If you are in your
fifties and downwards, the information is for you. Meet
Sobowale, and the eye-opening digital revolution info
unveiled. Turn to pp.
On fashion, Linda Orajekwe went in search of style
codes to guide you this year. She got some useful tips
from two stylists. See ‘‘20 Style Codes for 2019’’pp 3-5
Our new Healing Foods and Herbs/Healthy food
Combo is on pp 11.
Tobi Ayodele Keeney begins her weekly column
writing on Healing and food or herbs to
remedy it. While nutritionist, Temitope
Onafowokan writes on the richness
of the Avocado pear and how to
incorporate it in your meal. See our
All is well so far, and time is
running fast. Let’s make every
second count.
Have a great week!
Tie-dye
There is no despising the
colourful African print
any more as it has become
the corner stone of fashion.
Tie-dye popularly known
as adire will make great
fashion statement with style
influencers this year. Prada
and Stella McCartney are
already showing the way
with colourful Tees, blouses
and dresses. Great for
warm weather and lovely for
summer and effortless to
style.
How To Style
- Wear atop a pair of black or white pants
- Wear with a pair of summer sandals, trendy
slippers o courts as desired
- Keep other colours toned down
Ruffleman
Featured in a dress, blouse
or skirt, ruffles, frills
or flounces are child- like
accents that make an outfit
very girly. This season,
ruffles and flounces get
a high fashion make over
in flutter-sleeve tops. To
perfect the look for weekend
outing:
How To Style
- Don’t go heavy on accessory
- Let the frill be the only accent
- Wear with a pair of black
shoes preferably pointees.
- Carry a nice clutch bag to
complete the look.

STRIPE SHIRT
Neon
Bright, vibrant colours make a
come-back with a bang. These
colours can be blinding, intimidating
and tricky to pull. They are not for
the faint-hearted but they clearly
express the fun and daring side of an
individual.
These colours from bright yellow to
green and even pink will brighten your
day and your general outlook.
How To Style
-You can block colours, pairing one
bright colour over another.
-Wear your bright with nude.
-Spot a bright with one item of your
accessories, shoe, bag or even hat.
Low Rise
It seems designers went down
memory to bring us this trend.
Although its back to naughties style
but it comes with a twist as you’d find
with Versace and Alexander McQueen
who led the trend in the 90s. The low
rise pant is not a trend for everybody
as it is not meant to sit around your
natural waist line. Worn at your hips,
low rise pants are meant to sit well
below your natural waist. If you have
short legs, stay away from low rise
pants.
How To Style
- Pick out a pair one size bigger than
you would normally wear.
- Also, pick out a thick belt to go
- Let your shirt fall an inch below
the waist line of your pant
- Wear shoes appropriate for
the event
INTERVIEW
Sobowale Temiloluwa:
The Future Is Digital
Words By - Yemisi Suleiman
In this day of digital acceleration and transformation, many brands are struggling
to adapt to the digital culture and more seriously, to remain relevant. However,
taking the burden of ‘’positioning’’ brands properly to stay connected to the
global audience is Sobowale Temiloluwa- an online brand and reputation
management consultant and Chief Executive of Insightful Business Analytics
Limited, a brand marketing and digital analytics company.
With a speciality in online reputation management for organisations , a graduate
of History and International Relations from Lagos State University, and certificates
in ‘Business Growth, Strategic Data-Driven Marketing and Brand Management’, at
Kellogg School of Management, USA, Sobowale was the first individual in Africa
certified by Google in 2010, in four areas -Search Marketing, Display Advertising
Reporting and Analysis and Google Analytics . He also became the primary
consultant to (Gan) Google in Nigeria, in 2010, where he managed both Adwords
and analytics platform for over 200 African business online project participants.
With over ten years’ experience in managing digital marketing campaigns, online
brand/reputation (for leading executives and organisations)and digital analytics,
amongst other professional qualifications, Sobowale gives us an in-depth analysis
about branding in the digital space, his success story online and offline marketing.
What do you do as an online brand and reputation management consultant?
Talking about reputation management, we have three key things we do. Number
one; Making sure malicious and fake write-ups about the brands are dealt with
instantly, so that issues are straightened out, and we correct them. So that there is
no false impression of the brand we are managing because there are a lot of people
that could write about your brand online. It could be fake news; it could be wrong; you
have to make sure you address it. You need to make sure the person takes it down
as fast as possible.
Secondly, it is to defend the brand from people who want to use the brand to
defraud. If you have a strong brand, somebody can use it to deceive people to make
money. We have partners around the world, the most prominent companies around
the world who work with us to shut down fake pages, and we have done that for
leading CEOs and brands.
So when you are online, if I say my brand is X, I don’t have other proof pages
online that do that. We also make sure that the perception of our clients and
customers are positive, to create a positive attitude always. So that when people
search them or look for them online there is a perception that they would take with
them. So we build stories, we write articles, we do activities. Our clients are brands
that have a purpose, so we drive their mission by the social events they do, things
they do to impact their world. In that way, when you look for them online, you see the
stories of their positive impact online, and that creates a favourable impression of
them.
Online reputation management is doing these three things well and making sure
people go with the perception of what you want. The reason is that single investors
could google your executive brand name and receive a negative report, and won’t
invest in your company. You won’t know the date because Google won’t tell you
someone searched on you. So the need for the right thing to do at every point in
time is very crucial. Online reputation management is as essential as everything
becaause offline newspapers are online now.
What is the starting point for organisations that want to do branding?
Do organisations need to do a brand evaluation to know what their position
is in the market currently? What is the perception of the customers? What is their
likeability?
If we look at the Nigerian cabinet for example in the Nigerian system, maybe in
the top level rulership, we can see different people inside the same place. We can
say some people are speedy; some people are intelligent, some people are doers,
some people are the talker. So they need to do a brand evaluation to know what is
the perception of people about you, now. What is your positioning and likeability and
then decide where you want to go before you start looking at your target customers
and then positioning in the minds of the customers? Then what frame of reference
do I want? What is my positioning against my competitors? How would I make
my customers believe me? When you do that, you can now do your campaigns,
creatives and then launch.
Photography: Ahmed Moore
Stylist: Telvino Nwafor
January 13, 2019 / 9

R EP ORTAGE
INTERVIEW
What are the core mistakes Nigerian brands make?
The number one mistake is ‘no specific positioning’.
The brands want to be the best and the fastest, the
premium. You can’t do everything. Another challenge is
because someone has done something, you also want to
do it. It won’t work! It is a great mistake!
Another is thinking branding is ‘brand building’. People
change colour and poster, but people still have the old
perception of them, no matter the intensity they have. That
means branding is different from ‘brand building’. Branding
is part of the brand building; it is just one part, then, most
brands leave the brands after they have built the brand.
They only allow them to be. They don’t keep working on the
brands. Branding is something you can nurture for growth.
Another is stretching the brand too much; you don’t
wake up one day and say ‘because I am right in this like
I am doing banking work, I can also do shipping’. Don’t
stretch your brand too much. Another is endorsements.
Don’t think that as soon as you endorse or have somebody
as a ‘brand ambassador’, they would do magic. There is no
magic formula from anywhere. There are vital activities that
you need, so that when they see your ‘brand ambassador’,
they will experience your brand.
So what attracted you to the digital industry?
I used to work with agencies, not work directly; I used to
do a few things. If you need to lead in the industry you are
in, you have to go to trade you can win. They call it ‘focus
where you can win’.There are thousands of opportunities
people can have, but there is one you are sure to win.
If you don’t know that, you can lose it. So when digital
media started, we were the pioneers. We pioneered digital
press in Nigeria. I was the first consultant to Google in
Nigeria. I was also the first person certified by Google as
a professional. So we pioneered the digital media as an
alternative to the collaboration to offline agencies, mainly
because we couldn’t win. You can’t start up an agency and
win in Nigeria. Some people have been there for 25 years
to 30 years.
For us focusing on the offline has just come in. We
make sure we give people the best experience and make
sure people get the most value from it.
What got me to the digital space is the ability to
expand beyond what you can see. You know the analytics
capability you can see. So you know what exactly you
are doing, what you are doing wrong? What are you
doing right? What is not working? All of these are possible
because of the analytical capabilities of the digital space.
So I know where the news came from, what time it got to
me? What should I do to change it?
So the analytical capabilities are what interested me. I
had to learn very well because if you are going to lead top
brands through a path which is digital media, you also have
to understand its end to the end. Or else you will lead them
on blindly.
Digital space is the place where the whole world sees
it at once; it is not a place you can guess. So for me, it is a
place where precision is needed, and that is an attraction.
Again, the growth and possibilities of digital media is
an attraction. You can wake up in your room; post and
become a prominent blogger. I mean look at people like
the bloggers in Nigeria, they were nobody, but they started
with blogs and became more prosperous. The capabilities
and possibilities are endless, and that excited me. I was like
‘Yes’. It is time to make it happen.
Do you see the digital space taking over the offline
eventually?
Well, it is collaboration, depending on your target
audience. .As a brand, if your audience is a specified
people; some people still read newspapers a lot; some
people still watch T.V, a lot. If your audience is that category
of people, there is no way you can meet them on the
touch point online, but what they consume is T.V., So you
still have to meet them. But over time with brands that do
videos, more people are moving towards online. I think
innovation is needed on the part of the traditional media,
to catch up with what is happening; so they are not left
behind.
We can’t leave them; it is not that we are not going
to take over but, they have to innovate and use their
experience to move forward. Digital is coming, but offline
people need to have a feel of the fully rounded brand
management strategy, because you write about them in
papers, and still write about them in digital space. And
you would be surprised that maybe some blogs would
become newspapers; they take all their information and
put in papers. They have no website, they are offline, but
most of the audience still want to get offline; they feel the
look and texture. It is an experience. They have moved
from just reading. It is now an experience. It is different
from just reading it. You go to places, and you are like ‘I got
this’. ‘They did this’. The whole experience is what you take
away, and for me, it is critical and most critical for Nigerian
brands.
Are there limitations to online/digital marketing?
The limitation is how much knowledge you have. That
is just the limitation because there are many possibilities;
it is endless. Someone can sleep and wake up and stay
a strong brand. Someone can sleep and wake up as a
shattered brand because something happened overnight,
and he is all over Twitter. He is trending, and the person
can’t see anything.
And the learning is available. If you want to learn about
digital media, they are available online. There are training
and things you can get online. For us, we have looked at
the speedy space and felt that SMEs need to be brought
up to speed regarding online brand management, and that
is why we brought socialmediacreatives.com to help them
manage their designs.
That is your initiative?
Yes, Social Media Creatives is a do it ‘yourself graphics
and design website’, where any SMEs can design. If you
have sent an email before or have done a Powerpoint, you
can create solid graphics that you can use on social media.
And the platform gives you templates you can use. So it
skills your design up because you are competing against
successful brands who have money to pay designers. I
don’t know whether you have the money or you don’t have
money, I just come to your website and look at what you
have, if it is not attractive, it is not for me.
I am passionate
about education
because that is
the bedrock and
solution to the
problem of
anything.
If it is not a brand, I won’t buy from you. I would instead
go to a guy who spent money on getting a good designer
because it is expensive. Most SMEs don’t do it. They can
do it on our own at least to scale them up. When they get
there, in 10 minutes, they have a fantastic design; they can
use across all platforms because the platform helps them
to resize in all platforms.
You won’t have to bother for just one model if you like
eight different sizes for different platforms that you can edit
anytime you want. Everybody is now a designer, so it is for
you. And, that is the idea because, if your brand is not good
enough online- I don’t know you or dealt with you before- it
is what I see that I would believe. It is a significant touch
point for SMEs, while the search engines are major touch
points for CEOs.
Social media is the major touch point for SMEs and
small businesses. So what I feel and see- the look and feel
are essential for me, to attract people, not just the pictures.
You can snap photos and put them, but the way you
present your photographs and your storytelling matters.
Tell us about yourself, growing up and what informed
your choice of career as a teenager?
I am grateful for that question. It just shows that you can
be anything you want to be. I am from Ogun state. I lived all
my life in Abeokuta. My parents-my dad was a Reverend,
he was a civil servant, then became a reverend, and my
mother was a nurse. My parents did all they could to send
me to the best school. I went to St. Benedict Primary
school. Then for secondary school, I went to Abeokuta
Secondary School, and that is where most of the influential
people in Nigeria go to, like Fela Ransome-Kuti, Wole
Soyinka and many more, that we know
I studied History and International Relations, at the
Lagos State University.
As life would have it, while I was studying History and
International Relations at that point, I didn’t appreciate it.
I felt History was boring, why should one go to the past
to find things out, but now we do historical data, before
carrying out analysis. We go back three years to what used
to happen to a brand. Data analysis is, but the insight in it is
the way forward. That is my story.
In the last ten years, I have done almost, any and every
type of course in digital media that is possible. If you look at
my profile, I have done practically every class. If you have
the knowledge and you are empowered, even if you don’t
have money in your hands, you can’t be broke for too long.
People are like all the money spent in school you ought
to have built bungalows. Look I don’t have up 50,000 acres
of land, but I have up to 50,000 acres of knowledge that I
can monetise in the future, that will take me for the longest
time. I am passionate about education because that is
the bedrock and solution to the problem of anything. The
problem we have in Nigeria is lack of knowledge. If we can
deal with the education problem in Nigeria, we can deal
with anything.
You seem to be very busy, if you have to take off time
to relax, what do you do?
I play music. I love golf, but I have not played it once
before. I only follow my pastors to play it. I like to watch it.
I would also want to play someday. I am a karate person.
I am a ‘yellow belter’. But I love music. I am an organist. I
play the piano, and I love it. I sometimes weep when I play
songs that my dad thought me. He was an organist too. My
children are also learning.
In my past time, I sleep. I sleep when I have
challenges. My wife knows when I sleep for many hours,
she knows something is wrong.
I also go out even though I am not a night crawler. Once
in a while, I love to go out to gist with friends.
How does being a brand manager influence your
dress sense?
Okay, so like I spoke about ‘touch points’ earlier, your
look is your ‘touch point’, for whatever you do, you manage
appropriately. For me, sense of style is the ability to
combine colours and the looks with it. Some people can’t
blend colours like burgundy and sky blue. The method is
the ability to mix weird things, and it pops out. You know it is
a brand. Like I tell people, you are where 5000 people are
sitting, what would make them look at that guy.
So are you a suit person or what do you like to wear?
Ah, I love suits. I used to like a three-piece suit because
my dad was a suit man. My dad would always buy you a
three-piece suit; you wear it and wear the waistcoat, and
the tie.
Healing FOODS
Fibromyalgia; the Chronic
Body Ache Disease
Welcome to the first segment of Healing Foods!
Each week, I will look at different common and
chronic ailments and which foods and herbal
remedies can be used to combat the disease.
Today I am going to talk about eating your
medicine. There is a quote that says “The food
you eat can be either the safest and most
powerful form of medicine or the slowest form
of poison”. Just think about it; whatever you eat
be it bad or good, are absorbed by your body
and can either work for you or against you.
Surely we all know too much sugar is bad for
you, and we all know fruits and vegetables are
right for you. However, did you know that
certain foods we eat can work to heal our bodies
naturally? Also, certain foods we eat can lead to
chronic long-term diseases that may include
cancer?
Today we will discuss the condition
Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia or ‘fibro’ seems like
a very different rare condition, but it refers to a
chronic illness that is characterised by
widespread body ache, joint pain, and fatigue
and muscle soreness. For the most part, there is
no apparent medical cause for the illness, and
most people go undiagnosed and live with the
constant body ache, self-medicating with
paracetamol, ibuprofen, and other medicines
meant for long-term use. Fibromyalgia is
triggered by other illnesses, surgery, trauma, or
even psychological stress. This condition tends
to affect more women than men.
Treatment for fibro can include pain
medications, antidepressants, muscle relaxants
and various other therapies aimed at relieving
symptoms only. However, for those seeking
natural ways to help ease the body pain, the first
thing we will suggest is to eliminate MSG
(monosodium glutamate). Excess glutamate in
the body has been shown to increase
fibromyalgia symptoms in people, and sources
of MSG in food products like soy sauce and
seasoning cubes. If you suffer from constant
body aches, headaches, tiredness and morning
stiffness, you might benefit from making the
switch from seasoning cubes to using herbs and
spices to season your food naturally.
Finally, increase the intake of magnesium in
your diet. Magnesium counteracts the effects of
glutamate effectively and also works as a natural
muscle relaxer which helps reduce muscle pain
and also promotes sleep. Magnesium can also
help the symptoms of constipation and stomach
aches. Magnesium-rich foods include cashew
nuts, most nuts and seeds, avocados, our
Nigerian brown beans and most dark leafy
vegetables. A bowl of simple vegetable soup with
egusi paired with a pot of beans can provide a
lot of proper nutrition as well as supply you with
enough magnesium to help relieve your body
ache symptoms. Besides, the use of a natural
magnesium supplement will further provide you
with enough of the mineral. We also urge all our
readers out there to please go for regular health
checks in order prevent disease as well as to
reduce the severity of undetected illnesses.
Frequent aches and pains may be a sign of
severe underlying illness and getting a diagnosis
is the first step in getting the right treatment and
natural remedy to such a situation. So have a
blessed week and stay healthy!
The New Year is here, and most of us have set
our year Goals. If one of your year goals is
staying healthy, then I am here to help.
This quarter we will be talking about fruits and
vegetables and how to combine for salads and
drinks
Let’s start with Avocado Pear.
Avocado pears are incredibly nutritious. It is the
fruit from the avocado tree, scientifically known
as Persea Americana. Avocado has more
potassium than Bananas. Potassium is an
essential mineral that most people don’t get
enough. Avocados are very high in potassium,
which supports healthy blood pressure. It may
also prevent cancers.
Avocados and their oils are high in
monounsaturated Fatty acids (MUFAs) and
heart-healthy fatty acids that are believed to be
one of the main reasons for the health benefit of
avocado oil.
Eating Avocado can lower the
“bad” cholesterol significantly.
People who eat Avocado tend
to be healthier and weigh less.
Eating Avocado and the oils
with other vegetables can
dramatically increase the
number of antioxidants we
take in.
Avocado is delicious and easy
to incorporate in your diet. It
has a creamy, rich fatty texture
and blends well with other
ingredients. Therefore it’s easy
to add to your diet. Using lemon juice may
prevent it from browning quickly.
How to make an Avocado creamy spread
Ingredients
1 ripe Avocado Pear
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon of yellow mustard
Bread
Method
Place the avocado pear pulps in a blender
add the lemon and mustard and blend till
it forms a fine paste. Pour it into a small
bowl with cover, refrigerate it, until
needed. Or spread on bread immediately.
Good Sex In The New Year
Yes, it is time of the year once again to make all your
New Year resolutions as it relates to your sex life adopted
year after year in order to live a happier and healthier life.
Love making is good for couples but indulging in it
regularly is even better as it does not only help you sleep
well, it also relieves stress and burn calories. You may
not need much convincing, the truth is that there is quite
a few health gains to a healthy sex life. According to
latest studies, regular sex, that is three to four lovemaking
sessions weekly can be a great booster to your health
and total well being with fertility included.
Dr David Weeks, clinical neuropsychologist revealed
to a psychology conference that his extensive research
had found older men and women with an active love life
looked five to seven years younger than their actual age,
though you don’t have to be at it every night to enjoy
youth enhancing effects. Dr Weeks discovered during his
10-year study that the quality was as important as the
quantity, with the anti- aging benefits stronger if the sex
was classed as ‘’loving’’.
Are you longing for a more lively sex life?? ‘’ Having
sex will make sex better and improve your libido,’’ says
Lauren Streicher, MD. She is an assistant clinical
professor obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern
University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
‘’For those women that have sex-ups vaginal lubrication,
blood flow and elasticity, she says, all of which makes
sex better and help to crave more of it’’. Just in case you
want to try for a baby, be sure to keep the sperm fresh
and in a tip top shape by engaging in sex at least twice a
week, not necessarily when you are ovulating, frequent
intercourse has also been found to help balance a lady’s
hormone and regulate her period which further boost the
possibility of conception.
It serves as fertility booster, this is definitely music to
most guys ears. Studies had it that, the more often you
copulate, the better the sperm quality. The semen health
was found to be best if sex had occurred less than two
days before the sperm was tested and was greatly
decreased after ten days of no activity.
Sex help to improve cardiovascular health, a recent
study has this to say that men who engage in love
making more than twice a week have lower risk of getting
heart attack than men who had less than once a month.
Actually a very good sex life is good for your heart, in
spite of it been a powerful way to raise your heart rate,
intercourse aids to keep your estrogen and testosterone
levels in balance
Regular love making helps to increase the level of the
immune boosting antibody, immunoglobulin A [IGA],
which makes your body stronger against aliments such
as common colds and fever. ‘’ Sexually active people
take fewer sick days,’’ says Yvonne K. Fulbright, PhD a
sexual health expert. Also you should still do other things
that makes your immune system happy, like eating right,
staying active and getting enough sleep. Ease painful
period cramps, quite a number of women said they felt
better, if they do the act during a cramp attack. There is a
theory that says that muscle contractions that occur when
you reach peak levels of excitement relieve the tension in
your uterus, the ones that causes the menstrual cramps
thus easing the pains.
Indulging in regular sex improves ladies’ bladder
control because a strong pelvic floor is fundamental for
avoiding urine incontinence, this condition will affect about
thirty percent of women at some point in their lives. So a
very good sex is a form of workout for your pelvic floor
muscles. Achieving an orgasm causes contractions in
those muscles which strengthens them.
Reduces stress, being close to your spouse can
soothe stress and anxiety, so don’t ever allow stress of
any kind to affect your performance in the other room. Not
only will it improve your mood, study has also proven that
couples who have regular bedroom stuffs can handle
stress better and are happier people. Making love and
intimacy can boost your self confidence and happiness
and as ‘’ It’s not only a prescription for a healthy life, but a
happy one.’’
Sex serves as pain reliever, for those using headache
an age old excuse not to copulate, scientific evidence
says that, to the contrary, sex can shift pain. So make
love instead as the level of the hormone oxytocin
increases by five times when you are about to climax.
This endorphin helps in reducing aches and pains. Also
love making gets your heart rate increased, fresh blood is
supplied to your organs and cells while the used blood is
removed thereby expelling toxins and other substances
that make one to feel tired.
Help to promote longevity when one achieve orgasm,
a hormone called Dehydroepiandrosterone is released
which improves immunity, repairs tissue and keeps the
skin healthy. There is the possibility for guys that have at
least two orgasms a week to outlive guys who copulate
once every few weeks.
Improves your sleep, the oxytocin that is released
when you have orgasm can help you drop off, research
claims. Both men and women releases this feel-good
hormone just before orgasm, the sleep you get is a lot
more relaxing hence getting a good night’s sleep will keep
you alert and healthy. This is a genuine excuse for him to
sleep off quickly after making love.
Risk of prostate cancer is reduced; researchers at
Nottingham University have found that men who enjoy
frequent sex life in their 50s are at a lower risk of
developing prostate cancer. This is due to the fact that
sex clears the prostate of toxins that could otherwise
linger and trigger cancerous changes.
Your overall fitness is guarantee especially if going to
the gym or working out at home seem like a task, regular
sex is really a great form of exercise to help you lose the
flab, keep in shape and also do magic for your waistline,
as half an hour of making love burns more than 80
calories if done frequently. It bumps up your heart, so get
busy as you might need to make time for it on a regular
basis, like every other exercise,’’ consistency helps
maximize the benefits’’. Makes you feel better all day
long, so if you want to settle for a spot of morning passion
to start your day, the boost provided can last right until
night time, according to research. The American scientist
Dr. Debby Herbenick found that adults who made love
first thing in the morning were not only more upbeat for
the rest of the day, but also gained from a stronger
immune system than those who simply drank a cup of tea
and ate some toast before heading out for the day’s job.
Love making not only feel good, it can be good for
you more especially as you don’t need anti- wrinkle
creams hence the above mentioned perks of good sex
can actually extend beyond your bedroom.
What are you waiting for? You can start tonight!
Hair Loss /
Balding
A full head of hair usually has a total of 100,000 to
150,000 strands and it is normal to lose some hair
everyday (about 150 to 200 strands). Baldness
refers to excessive hair loss from your scalp and
can be the result of heredity, certain medications
or an underlying medical condition. Men, women
and children can experience hair loss. The medical
term for hair loss is Alopecia. The most common
type is male pattern baldness also known as
Androgenic Alopecia which accounts for 95% of
cases of hair loss from the scalp. This form of
alopecia is characteristically permanent and can
be attributed to heredity. In this condition, the
hair follicles are genetically predisposed to being
sensitive to a metabolite of testosterone know as
DHT (dihydrotestosterone). These follicles shrink
when exposed to DHT and eventually become
incapable of producing hair. Alopecia Areata is a
form of alopecia that may be temporary and could
involve hair on the scalp as well as the body. This
form of hair loss usually occurs in small, round
and smooth patches and is an auto-immune
disorder.
To better understand hair loss it is helpful to
understand the biology of hair. There are 3 stages
of hair development namely: Growth, Resting and
Shedding. Not all hairs are in the same stage at the
same time. About 90% of hair is in the growth
phase while the other 10% is in the resting phase
after which it is shed. When the rate of shedding
exceeds the rate of regrowth the result is baldness.
The Growth or Anagen phase can last between
2 and 6 years and the hair shaft is at its thickest.
Caucasian hair grows about one-half to one inch a
month while Black African hair grows much
slower. The Resting or Catagen phase lasts 2 to 3
months and the Shedding or Telogen phase lasts
five to six weeks and with this process, new hair
begins to grow to replace shed telogen hair which
is very fine.
Individuals with Androgenic hair loss typically
start losing hair in their teenage years. It is
common in men but may also affect women.
Heredity determines the age at which loss starts
and the developmental speed, pattern and extent
of loss. In men, the loss usually begins at the
temples and the crown and the end result may be
complete or partial baldness. In women with
androgenic hair loss, the hair loss is usually
limited to the front, side or crown and it is rare to
see complete baldness in women.
Alopecia Areata is classified as an autoimmune
disease and the cause is unknown. Patients with
this condition are usually in good health and there
may also be a hereditary factor. Unlike androgenic
alopecia, the hair usually grows back but the loss
may occur several times.
Other causes of temporary hair loss
include :
• Poor Nutrition when protein, zinc, biotin and
iron are deficient
• Diseases like syphilis, diabetes, thyroid
disorders, amyloidosis and lupus
• Certain Medications used for the treatment of
arthritis, gout, depression, heart disease and
hypertension.
• Oral contraceptives may lead to hair loss in
some women
• Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy
• After stressful events such as Childbirth,
Illness and Surgery
• Infants often lose hair during the first several
months of life
• Scalp Infections such as ringworm and Hair
Treatments done incorrectly such as dying,
tinting, perming and bleaching
• Some hairstyles pull the hair too tightly
leading to hair loss known as traction alopecia.
Treatment
You should start by seeing a Doctor to help
determine the cause of your hair loss and to
prescribe treatment. Investigations including
blood tests and biopsies may be carried out to help
reach a diagnosis.
Baldness cannot be cured but there are
treatments available to help promote growth and
cover up hair loss. Spontaneous hair growth
without any form of treatment may be seen in
some forms of alopecia. The effectiveness of
medications used to treat alopecia depends on the
cause of hair loss, the extent of loss and individual
response. Treatment is generally less effective in
extensive cases of loss.
Drugs used for the treatment of alopecia
include:
• Minoxidil (Rogaine) a topical preparation
rubbed into the scalp which is used for the
treatment of androgenic alopecia and alopecia
areata
• Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) a tablet taken
daily to treat male pattern alopecia
• Corticosteroids injections into the scalp used to
treat alopecia areata
• Steroid creams may also be used but are not as
effective as the injectables
• Anthralin (Drithocreme) a tarry substance
applied to the scalp and washed off daily
Surgical Procedures such as hair transplants
are available to treat androgenic alopecia. During
transplantation, a cosmetic surgeon or
dermatologist takes tiny plugs of skin from the
nape or side of the scalp containing one to several
hair follicles and transplants them in the balding
areas. Several sessions may be needed since
hereditary loss progresses.
Scalp reduction is another surgical procedure
where the bald scalp is surgically removed and
hair covered scalp is stretched and sutured to
cover the area. Alternatively, a flap of scalp
containing hair may be folded over an area of bald
skin.
Wigs and hairpieces are alternatives to painful
expensive surgery.
There are other options available when
fighting hair loss:
• Nizoral Shampoo has been helpful in cases of
androgenic alopecia
• FNS (Follicle Nutrient Serum) contains natural
ingredients that stimulate hair growth
• Flutamide a prescription medication blocks the
effect of androgenic hormones like DHT
(Dihydrotestosterone It is used to treat excessive
facial hair growth in women with PCOS (Polycystic
Ovarian Syndrome) and female pattern baldness
• GHK Copper Peptides inhibit the enzyme 5
alpha-reductase necessary for the formation of
DHT
• Minimize Physical and Chemical Trauma to the
hair due to processes such as perming, flat ironing,
dyeing and heat styling.
Tips To Build A Capsule
Wardrobe With Low
Budget
By - Linda Orajekwe
On a low budget? Here is how
to build a capsule collection
and still look fashionable.
1
Plan Your Ideal
Wardrobe
Like any financial decision, your capsule
makeover needs to be well thought out and
planned. Choose colours that will allow you
create the greatest number of outfits with
the fewest pieces. Look out for what you
feel and look good in and buy clothes that
give you the image you want to project.
Shop For Timeless
Rather Than Trendy
A capsule wardrobe isn’t trend dependent,
rather it complements whatever trend that
pops up. Like a blazer for example is
timeless and can be complemented with a
lot of pieces in your wardrobe. Shopping
trendy will only crack your pocket because
you will always want to keep up with new
trend.
4
Determine Your
Shopping Strategy
If there’s one thing that dries your wallet faster while
shopping, is impulse buying. Therefore, strategize how
you’re shopping with your eye on your budget. If all you can
afford is just a new item per month, try to decide which of
the item is a “priority purchase”, then make that your
strategy and save towards it.
5
Be a Savvy Shopper
While we’re being budget focused, know
what is in the store. Look out for great
deals. Make your research on thrift stores
with (quality) vintage outfit to add a touch
of that timeless feel. maxi skirt or boot cut
jean and the little black dress.
3
Choose Quality
Over Quantity
It is better to buy one
quality item that will last
you for years than buy
five inferior outfits that will
not make it to the end of
the year. Getting a
capsule wardrobe means
you looking out for quality
outfits that will stand the
test of time.
House of Oduduwa Foundation partners
Rejuvenee, others for Moremi the Musical
In a bid to honour the legacy of Queen Moremi
Ajasoro of Ile Ife, wife, mother, warrior and a
symbol of beauty and sacrifice, the House of
Oduduwa Foundation, in collaboration with
Rejevenee, among others, brought alive on
stage the life and times of Queen Moremi tagged
‘Moremi, the Musical.’ Moremi the Musical is a
story about love, faith, honour and the ultimate
sacrifice. The show, which took place at Terra
Kulture in Lagos, durring the yultide season,
witnessed a massive turn out of lovers of history,
arts and music.
Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman, House of
Oduduwa Foundation and Ambassador, Moremi
Ajasoro Brand, Princess Aderonke Ademiluyi,
said the Moremi concept is a franchise of the
House of Oduduwa Foundation and a number of
projects were initiated by the foundation in order
to immortalize the legend. According to Princess
Ademiluyi, the franchise began with a beauty
pageant, a book launch and the third part being
the musical play of the life and times of Queen
Moremi.
“We are dedicated to telling our story and the
story of Queen Moremi is about a woman who
dedicated her life to ensure that her home town
of Ile Ife was safe from marauders. She was
a sacrificial leader and that is what sacrificial
leadership is all about,” says Ademiluyi.
Princess Ademiluyi believes that there is a need
to talk about the story of Queen Moremi to
enable our children and the younger generations
know our history particularly the history of the
Ile Ife town. “Our children should also know that
a regular woman, who lived several years ago,
stood up and dared to do things no man could
do at that time.”
Spokesperson for Rejuvenee, major sponsors
of the production, Lilian Amah-Aluko said seeing
the story brought to life on stage made the
decision to be part of it a worthwhile investment.
Said Aluko: “At Rejuvenee, we celebrate beauty
and wellness and when the House of Oduduwa
approached us with sponsorship requests, we
saw it as an opportunity to be part of something
that celebrates the beauty of womanhood, as
well as, send out the messages of courage
and hope to our people, which queen Moremi
personifies.”
Moremi the Musical was put together by Bolanle
Austen Peters productions, together with a cast
of veteran actors, that brought to life in musical
form, the service and sacrifice of Moremi,
a woman who eventually brought peace,
progress and prosperity to Ile-Ife, a town that
was bedeviled with strife and sorrows. Queen
Moremi gave up her only son in order to achieve
the peace that was eventually enjoyed by the
entire Yoruba land and for her sacrifice; she is
today honoured in all of Yoruba land and is a
symbol of sacrifice.
The House of Oduduwa Foundation is an
initiative of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan
Ogunwusi.
