Success Story: Liz McManus and Rico

Liz McManus’ horse kept having chronic soreness in his stifles. Her veterinarian felt that something may be missing from her training program and recommended the LARC TEST. See how the LARC TEST helped Liz get her horse back on track and achieving peak performance. She now uses the LARC TEST on many of her competitive horses. SUCCESS STORY
LIZ MCMANUS & HEZ GOOD N FAMOUS (RICO)

1
THE ROAD TO REVOVERY
Meet Hez Good N Famous (Rico)
Rico is a barrel racing horse that has been using the LARC TEST for over
a year. He was originally referred by Dr. Whitaker from the Brazos Valley
Equine Hospital after exhibiting a weak hind end, especially in the hocks
and stifles.
1

What The LARC TEST Revealed
As part of Rico’s conditioning program, the LARC TEST was performed
nine times between August 2017 and November 2018 to measure the
impact of exercise on his heart, lungs, and muscles.
Over time, the LARC TEST showed that Rico’s current training program
was too easy to develop the stamina and speed required for high-level
competition. It also revealed an allergy that was present in the airways,
making it difficult for Rico to get enough oxygen in his lungs.
The Outcome
After using the LARC TEST, Rico’s time is a full one second faster and
Liz is now planning to enter him in the American barrel racing qualifiers.
“I want my horse to win the right
way. I want him to win the natural
way by letting him tell me what he
needs to be the winner he is.”
- Liz McManus, WPRA Barrel Racer
THE STEP-BY-STEP STORY
Using the LARC TEST as a guide, Rico transformed from having
a weak hind end, especially in the hocks and stifles to a
becoming a strong horse with consistent performance.
In doing so, he went from “not clocking as fast as he had
been” or “finishing his turns” to running a full one second
faster than before.
This is his journey.
TEST 1
AUGUST 17, 2017
Based on the results a training program
was developed for Rico and his lungs
were nebulized.
4

TEST 2
OCTOBER 6, 2017
Rico was brought in for a recheck because he wasn’t performing at his
best. Rico was getting flat and not running as fast.A LARC TEST was
performed and it showed a poor muscle recovery and a high risk for
bleeding.
The decision was made to back off of the current training program and
the lungs were nebulized once again to clean them up. Rico was given
time off based on recommendation from the veterinarian.
5

TEST 3
FEBRUARY 17, 2018
Rico was brought to Equicare to be
reconditioned and eased back to work.
After a couple of weeks, a LARC TEST
was performed.
The results showed that aerobically and
anaerobically, Rico was ready to return to
work – the current program was deemed
too easy on the heart and lungs.
But the LARC TEST also revealed minor
inflammation in the airways. Rico was
nebulized and returned to work with a
recommendation to nebulize twice a week.
.
6

TEST 4
JUNE 21, 2018
Rico was brought back to
Equicare for a couple of weeks
of conditioning. Rico’s owner
was pleased with his current
performance. He was running
better and had faster times.
The LARC TEST showed Rico
had adapted to his current
level of work and it was time to
intensify his conditioning
program.
7

TEST 5
JUNE 26, 2018
Rico was tested after a barrel
racing run. The LARC TEST
showed good recovery from the
run. but a high risk of muscle
fatigue and injury.
Based on the recommendation
coming out of the LARC TEST,
Rico’s owner added an
electrolyte and recovery aid to
the horse’s program.
.
TEST 6
JULY 17, 2018
9

Rico was tested again after a barrel racing run because his owner
felt that the horse was not performing his best.
The LARC TEST revealed an allergy in the airways was present
again and Rico had poor muscle recovery due to the allergy in the
airways.
Rico was sent with his LARC TEST results to the veterinarian who
performed a BAL test. The test confirmed his allergies, as well as
possible bleeding episodes. Steroids were prescribed, Rico’s
nebulization program was adjusted, and Rico was put on Lasix
before before he runs. He returned to work two weeks later and
won two races.
10

TEST 7
AUGUST 25, 2018
11

Rico was tested again after a barrel racing run because his owner
didn’t feel he was finishing his turns or running as hard.
The LARC TEST showed a pain indicator. However, Rico had multiple
LARC TEST’s on file with no previous pain indicators.
Rico’s owner was referred to her veterinarian who performed an exam
and found the stifles were sore. His veterinarian reviewed Rico’s
medical history and found that his stifles had a history of injections
and that he was due. Injections were given and Rico returned back to
work quickly.
12

TEST 8
OCTOBER 3, 2018
Rico was tested as a routine check after a barrel race. After winning his race, Rico
showed good aerobic and anaerobic recovery from the work
13

TEST 9
NOVEMBER 10, 2018
Rico was tested again for a routine check
after a barrel run. Rico won the jackpot and
his results showed excellent recovery. He was
cleared to intensify training.
“I set out to do something Type to enter textthat
gave the horse
a voice. I wanted to know more and to ask
him ‘how are you’ or ‘was that too much for
you?’ I wanted to ask the horse questions and
have the horse tell me how he was feeling.”
