Harris Center: Spring 2019

In addition to program notes for today’s show, inside this program guide you’ll find information about the many arts education programs offered by Folsom Lake College (page 7) as well as the college’s Innovation Center makerspace (page 12). There’s also a spotlight on some dance academies, one of the many local arts organizations that perform in the Center (page 14). Visit page 11 to learn about Center Gift Cards, Discount Ticket programs, Group Sales and the Center’s Perks Card program. To help you plan ahead, a listing of this season’s events is available on pages 60 and 61. Also within are acknowledgements of some of the cast that help make this all possible, including our members anddonors (pages 54-55) and sponsors (page 57) whose support of the Center is critical to its success, since ticket revenues alone simply do not cover all the costs of providing a world-class arts center. As you learn more about the Center and its programs, we hope you’ll also consider contributing to help us further expand the reach and impact of the Harris Center in this community. Again, thank you for attending today’s performance. We hope you’ll enjoy this great show, up close, and return for many more in the years ahead. Spotlight on Folsom Lake College: Makerspace
12 2018-2019 SEASON PROGRAM GUIDE www.harriscenter.net
Innovation Center
The Innovation Center (IC) at Folsom Lake College is a comprehensive makerspace,
an instructional innovation and technology development incubator that expands
the college's capacity to offer interdisciplinary curriculum and programs and
provides students, faculty, and staff with access to hands-on, state-of-the-art
prototyping technologies.
The Innovation Center is a student resource dedicated to exploration of knowledge
and creation of awesome stuff! It connects students with Makerships, short
internships designed to introduce students to the real world field in which they
would work.
A makerspace is a physical location where people gather to share resources and
knowledge, work on projects, network, and build things. At Folsom Lake College,
it's is a collaborative studio space, an informal combination of lab and workshop,
and a creative environment for learning through hands-on exploration.
Innovation Center programs and resources enable students from all disciplines
to tackle open-ended, real world challenges, preparing them for careers
involving innovation, creativity, and invention and helping them to become more
competitive in a rapidly changing job market.
The IC hosts workshops on the latest in digital fabrication and related
technologies, including three dimensional-printing, laser cutting/engraving,
computer numerical controlled (CNC) machining, bioprinting, virtual reality,
and microcontrollers. It has grown into an inclusive and dynamic environment
for students to collaborate on interdiciplinary projects and internships, and is
home to courses and certificates in Digital Fabrication and the Internet of Things.
The IC functions as a catalyst for instructional innovation, enabling the college
to cultivate deeper relationships with local businesses, K-12 partners, transfer
institutions and the community, and cements FLC’s reputation as a regional
leader in STEM/STEAM education.
Innovation Center programs are made possible by CCC Maker, a grant from the
California Community College Chancellor’s Office, Workforce and Economic
Division, as part of the Doing What Matters for Jobs and the Economy framework,
and through the generous support of our local sponsors, including Inductive
Automation, Intel, and the Bob and Star Pepper Foundation.
Zachary Dowell serves as the Instructional Design & Development Coordinator
of the Innovation Center.
