President
of the MPAH
Modern Pentathlon, the only sport
created especially for the Olympic
Summer Games by Baron Pierre de
Coubertin, already boasts a strong
heritage stretching Stockholm. back
to 1912.
In 2012, the Indian Olympic
Association (IOA) members approved
Modern Pentathlon’s status as one of
the core sports affiliated in India.
This endorsement gives our
movement a strong mandate to
continue the successful development
of Modern Pentathlon and the non-
Olympic UIPM Sports: Biathle,
Triathle, Tetrathlon and Laser-Run.
The last two years 2017 & 2018
were landmark years for our
development programme. The 1 st ever
Laser-Run City Tour of Asia was
organized in Karnal and took our
movement to many states and cities
that witnessed Laser-Run competition
for the first time. We attracted more
than 200 new athletes to our sport
and especially the younger
generations.
In other good news for our
development, our pentathletes
participated in Open KYZ
Championships, Asian Modern
Pentathlon Championships, Modern
Pentathlon World Cup, where we saw
some remarkable efforts and results.
At the pinnacle of our sporting
movement in 2018 our athletes proved
once again that they are operating at a
very high level. Many new and
improving athletes challenged the
established order, and I was very happy
to see athletes from more and new
districts and different continents
reaching the podium.
I was very proud of their performances
and the spirit of fair play which was, as
always, a hallmark of all competitions.
Athletes are the base and the backbone
of our movement. The better they
perform and present Modern Pentathlon
and our other UIPM Sports, the more
our Association is respected and
honored in the Olympic Movement.
I would like to congratulate our former
National General Secretary Sh. Namdev
Shirgaonkar for his appointment as the
General Secretary of Asian Modern
Pentathlon Confederation (AMPC) as
well as the Joint Secretary of Indian
Olympic Association (IOA).

Modern Pentathlon has always been
and will remain the pinnacle of our
movement, and it will continue to
flourish if we strengthen the base.
Dear Colleagues and friends of Modern Pentathlon movement!
I would like to use this
opportunity to reflect on an
incredible year for our
wonderful sport.
2018 has been a year of rapid
progression, a year of new
horizons and adventures, a
year of projects fulfilled and
challenges overcome.
After a successful year 2017
we already have our eyes set
on Youth Olympic Games
2022 - Dakar. Yes, Dakar…the
host city for the next Youth
Olympic Games to be held in
Senegal.
And we would like to use it to
say, first of all, thank you.
Thank you to all athletes, who
under difficult conditions
engage in our sport, invest
their time and sometimes their
money to learn and compete in
the sport they love. The same
goes for their coaches and all
of our judges.
Thank you to all State &
District Associations and
local organizers, whose
efforts are crucial to
maintain our network of
events, our participation in
National & International
events.
Thank you to our partners,
who stand by us in difficult
times and help our sport to
remain relevant and protect
its history.
Thank you to all our board
members, who advise and
lead us to the best of their
abilities.
Thank you to all coaching
staff and officials. Many of
our officials are also
volunteers and devote their
time away from their daily
jobs.
They deserve a very special
mention and appreciation.
I often highlight the fact that
Modern Pentathlon is a
thrilling spectacle to watch,
but at the same time a safe
and responsible sport. Above
all, it is an innovative sport,
one that never stops wanting
to grow and evolve, and this
was never more apparent
than in 2018.
Our vision is to prove that an
athlete can grow from being
a champion in one discipline
to a true hero, a complete
pentathlete and human being
at the same time, who
masters a whole range of
disciplines, from a Modern
Biathle, Triathle, Tetrathlon
to the Champion Pentathlete
champion.
We look forward to receiving
those and to nurture a very
crucial debate within the
Modern Pentathlon family.

MODERN PENTATHLON
Modern Pentathlon is a unique multi-discipline sport created by
Modern Olympic Games founder, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, that
combines mental and physical challenge to find the most complete
athlete.
FENCING
The Modern Pentathlon competition
starts with the Epée Fencing. In the
Ranking Round, each athlete fences
against each of their rivals in bouts
that last up to a minute. Just one hit is
needed to win. If neither fencer has
scored a hit after 60 seconds they both
register a defeat.
An athlete who wins 25 of their 35 bouts will get 250 pentathlon points, with each victory
or defeat above or below this number worth a plus or minus score of 6 points.
In this way, a pentathlete may continue to advance as long as they continue to win
matches. The bout winner receives one bonus point for each bout they win.
In the final round, called the Bonus Round, a single fencing piste is used and the
competition is a one-on-one fight, each bout lasting maximum 45 seconds. The
competition is carried out in reverse order, with the last-place athlete going first against
the next-placed athlete. The winner of each bout will be matched against the next bestranked
pentathlete.
SWIMMING
The swimming event is a 200m freestyle
race. The heats are seeded with the fastest
swimmers competing in the final heat. A time
of 2:30 is worth 250 pentathlon points and
every third of a second faster or slower than
this time is being worth a plus or minus score
of one point.

RIDING
In the riding event, athletes have to
complete a show jumping course that
is between 350 – 450 meters including
12 obstacles and 15 jumps, in a set
time. The horses are assigned
randomly and each athlete only has 20
minutes and five practice jumps to get
to know the horse in the warm-up
ring, before coming out to compete.
A clear round within the time allowed
is worth 300 pentathlon points.
Competitors lose 7 points for each jump they knock down, and 10 points for a refusal to
jump or a fall, which is equivalent to a 10-second handicap in the final combined event.
They also lose one point for each second they are over the allowed time.
It is mandatory to cross the final line otherwise the rider will be eliminated with zero
points for the riding.
LASER RUN
For the climax of the competition, athletes run a
total distance of 3,200m, stopping to shoot and hit
the target five times from 10 meters distance
before each 800m leg – this is repeated four times.
Athletes can start running the next 800m leg once
they have hit the target five times. If they still
have not hit the target five times after 50 seconds,
so they are allowed to continue, but any hopes of a
medal will have gone.
The competitor who has amassed the most points
in the first three events starts the combined event
first, with the rest of the field facing a one second
handicap for each pentathlon point by which they
trail the leader.
This ensures that the first person to cross the
finish line wins the Gold medal.

Development

DEVELOPMENT
Five sports,
many #5uperathletes,
one giant footprint
During the 2018, the
association organized an
Education Programme in
various districts to reach out to
the people of the city to make
them discover Modern
Pentathlon.
In 2018 the
challenge was
to build a
stronger
media
footprint on
the back of a
successful
year.
More than 200 children from local
schools in the state took part in a
Modern Pentathlon demonstration
presented by Modern Pentathlon
Association, Haryana.
MPAH General Secretary Mr.
Satyavir Singh and officials for the
special exhibitions in Haryana which
they hope would put Modern
Pentathlon in the hearts and minds of
locals, both young and old.
There have been competitions of
Combined Event (run/ shoot) and
fencing exhibition with kids.

maintain the profile of UIPM Sports
and this Global Profile section tells
you all you need to know about the
promotional work that goes on
behind the scenes.
It was a year of new audiences, new
competitions, new platforms and new
opportunities to promote the most
challenging sports and the most
versatile athletes in the Olympic
movement – UIPM’s #5uperathletes.

Asia’s first ever UIPM Laser Run City
Tour was organized in Karnal
on 9 th April, 2017
The event of Laser Run with the title ‘UIPM Laser Run City Tour, Karnal’
was organized in Karnal, INDIA by the Modern Pentathlon Federation of
India (MPFI) under the aegis of UIPM on 9th April, 2017. It was Asia’s first
ever dedicated Laser Run event.
MPFI was supported by the 20 sets of Laser Pistols along with the targets
from the UIPM. Mr. Bernhard Petruschinski was appointed as the observer
by the UIPM to share his knowledge in order to make this event a great
success.
The event attracted more than 200 athletes for the inaugural UIPM Laser Run
City Tour.

India’s first ever International Laser Run City
Tour was organized at New Delhi.
The 3rd edition of UIPM Laser Run City Tour was organized in Delhi, on
27th August, 2017. The event was organized by Delhi Modern Pentathlon
Association & Modern Pentathlon Association, Haryana under the aegis of
Modern Pentathlon Federation of INDIA (MPFI). The venue for the event
was Chhatrasal Stadium, Delhi.
A total of 292 athletes participated in the event along with the athletes of
Afghanistan and Bangladesh. It was the first time when an event of Laser
Run City Tour was organized with international athletes.
The winners of UIPM Laser Run City Tour, Delhi were honored by Mr.
Namdev Shirgaonkar, Secretary General of Asian Modern Pentathlon
Confederation & then Secretary General of Modern Pentathlon Federation of
India and Mr. Kanhaiya Gurjar, Assistant Secretary of School Games
Federation of India (SGFI).

Indian Modern Pentathlon team scored their
1 st ever International medal at Open KGZ
Youth / Senior Championships, Kyrgyzstan.
Indian Pentathletes started their year with a 4 week joint training program
with Egyptian Pentathletes in Cairo, Egypt. The joint training camp was
organized under the MoU signed between the two National Federations.
The delegate comprised of total seven athletes and one coach. Three athletes
were selected from Haryana; Mrityunjay Poswal, Rahul Kathuria & Vikas
Kumar, while three athletes were from Maharashtra; Ajinkya Balwadkar,
Mayank Chapekar & Viraj Pardeshi and one athlete was from Karnataka.

Indian Modern Pentathlon team at Olympic
Bhawan, New Delhi before their departure for
Cairo to attend joint training program.
Indian Pentathletes started their year with a 4 week joint training program

organized under the MoU signed between the two National Federations.

Pentathlon Confederation & Joint Secretary, Indian Olympic Association
(IOA) wished a successful journey to Indian team.

Indian Modern Pentathlon team
participated for the first time in Modern
Pentathlon World Cup at Egypt.
The Indian Modern Pentathlon team participated for the very first time in
Modern Pentathlon World Cup held at Cairo, Egypt.
Indian athletes utilized the advantage of the training camp organized before
the World Cup and performed up to the standards.
After the event Indian athletes made their first entry in the Top - 200
pentathletes of World.
Mr. Satyavir Singh, the Head Coach of Indian team praised the performance
of Indian athletes and said that this experience will boost the moral of
athletes and will be utilized at the Asian Competitions.

India’s entry in U19 Asian / Oceania
Championships at Thailand.
A special training camp was organized for the Youth Pentathletes of India in
order to select the Indian team for U19 Asian / Oceania Modern Pentathlon
Championships. The Asian / Oceania Modern Pentathlon Championships was
organized at Chonburi, Thailand in the month May, 2018.
All the athletes were shortlisted under the Mission Olympic scheme of
Modern Pentathlon Federation of India (MPFI). Mraster Mrityunjay Poswal
& Master Nischay Bhalla from Haryana and Master Yash Jadhav were
selected for the Indian team.
The team secured sixth position at the event. The individual performances of
athletes resulted in the career best ranking of Indian athletes. Master Yash
secured 110 th rank, while Yash & Mrityunjay secured 120 th & 125 th rank
respectively in the Men Youth Pentathlon World Rankings.

Both Indian Modern Pentathlon Men &
Women teams secured bronze medals at
Intl. Jury Horishko Memorial,
Kyrgyzstan.
The Indian Modern Pentathlon team participated in the International Jury
Horishko Memorial Modern Pentathlon Championships at Bishkek,
Kyrgyzstan.
Advanced training camps were organized to train the athletes for 2 months
before the event.
The results surprised everyone, when both men & women teams won the
bronze medals. Master Sankalp emerged as the best athlete from the Indian
team by finishing at 5 th position in Individual category.
The athletes thanked their coach Mr. Satyavir Singh for the motivation and
training & environment provided to them before the event.

MISSION OLYMPIC
In April, 2016 Modern Pentathlon Association, Haryana launched a program named
‘Mission Olympic’, with the target to prepare the athletes representing India at the
Olympic Games.
The main aspects of this mission are:
• The Mission was formulated with the objective of identifying and supporting
potential participation to represent India in Olympic Games.
• International facilities will be provided to the pentathletes like trainers, equipment
and coaches.
• The initial target is to represent India at the Annual Asian Modern Pentathlon
Championships.
• The final target will be to participate for the first time on the grand stage, i.e.
Olympic Games.
Modern Pentathlon Association, Haryana has formulated a new plan to prepare the
athletes for both Youth Olympic Games and Olympic Games. The athletes will be
selected to participate in these events:
• Youth Olympic Games, 2022 (Born in 2004-2007)
• Youth Olympic Games, 2026 (Born in 2008-2011)
• Olympic Games, 2024 & 2028
SELECTION PROCESS
• Initially the school going kids will be selected to go through a series of tests,
• The best performing kids will be evaluated by the expert panel,
• The best evaluated kids will be categorized according to their strength and endurance
for the unique sport of Modern Pentathlon,
• The professional swimmers and athletes will be selected according to their strength
and endurance,
• All the selected athletes will be trained with the state of art infrastructure in order to
prepare a future champion.
FUTURE ROAD MAP
• Initially the athletes will be trained at local level to enhance their strength and
endurance,
• Then the athletes will be adopted by National Modern Pentathlon Academy (NMPA),
• NMPA will take care of their day to day preparation along with their studies,
• The experts at NMPA will analyze the performance of athletes,
• The best performing athletes will be selected for the international training programs,
• Finally, the best skilled athletes will represent India at various International events.
