ASTROLOGY IN 3D
AN EAST-WEST INTEGRATIVE APPROACH
By Gary O'Toole
Photograph Jurica Koletic
Most of my readings begin with
a description of the Zodiac. I
explain why I use the Sidereal
Zodiac, most often used in Jyotish,
or Vedic astrology, to my mostly
Western clients, more familiar
with their Tropical Sun signs. Both
Zodiacs are valid, of course. How
can millions of people around the
world be wrong?
But the question that quickly
follows is: How can both Zodiacs -
using calculations that vary by 24
degrees at present - be right?
My short answer to this is that
each Zodiac is right for something,
and on some level. The Tropical
Zodiac is symbolic and can be used
to see the rich symbolism of
astrology in our lives.
The Sidereal Zodiac is closer to the
actual constellations we refer to
when we speak of Aries, Taurus etc.,
and is more useful for practical
matters.
The Sidereal Zodiac also points to
another dimension of star signs, or
'lunar mansions' known as
Nakshatras. These offer further
interpretations and an intricate
interplay between solar and lunar
signs which divide the Zodiac in
equal parts.
Some astrologers even use the
actual astronomical positions of the
constellations, dividing the Zodiac
into unequal segments. For me, the
use of a calibrated tool, using equal
parts of either Sun or lunar signs,
works most effectively for timing –
much like a clock.
#MeToo
Let’s take the recent 'Me Too'
campaign as an example of how the
Tropical and Sidereal Zodiacs could
be used to interpret transits. The
campaign took off in October 2017,
just as Jupiter entered Tropical
Scorpio.
We can clearly see the power
dynamics of sexual abuse due to
our expanded awareness with
Jupiter in Scorpio, while issues of
inequality were highlighted due to
Jupiter’s concurrent transit in
Sidereal Libra. That same month, we
saw Saturn enter Sidereal
Sagittarius, Jupiter’s sign. Jupiter
may have brought the awareness,
but Saturn had more of a say in
removing the ingrained and
outdated thinking.
By looking at Saturn’s position in
the lunar mansion, Mula, placed at
the beginning of Sidereal Sagittarius,
we can see how Saturn showed the
need to pull up all the hidden
aspects involved by their root. The
word Mula is literally translated as
‘root’, showing the need to uproot
the established order when
transited by Saturn. Pluto in Tropical
Capricorn offers another
explanation of this phenomenon.
Timeline Astrology 2019 - 5

Both Zodiacs clearly point to
what was going on, but in different
ways, and on different levels.
Jupiter in Scorpio showed what was
talked about; what we were aware
of i.e., power and sex, while Jupiter
in Libra revealed practical issues
dealing with inequality.
Now, although keeping an eye
on both Zodiacs helps us to get a
3D picture of any given situation
using transits, integrating these
perspectives does not mean one
should have one foot in either
Zodiac while reading horoscopes.
This would lead to messy astrology
practice and unfocused readings.
If you went to a yoga class and
started applying what you learned
in Pilates, not only would you have
the yoga instructor correcting you,
but you may also go awry as you
are instructed through a yoga
sequence which is built upon
certain alignment principles.
It is not that Pilates is wrong in
this instance, but that the
alignment cues for Pilates do not fit
into a yoga sequence - even if they
borrow techniques from one
another. The same can be said of
Vedic and modern Western
astrology.
Both Zodiacs
clearly point to
what was going
on, but in
different ways,
and on different
levels
Overlapping Zodiacs
I have noted over the years
that when I see a birth chart of
someone with the same sign
rising in both Tropical and
Sidereal Zodiacs (there is a 5 or
6 degree overlap possible), they
seem to be more obviously that
sign. So, if someone was born
with the late degrees of Tropical
Aries rising, they would have the
early degrees of Sidereal Aries
rising.
I propose that because
Sidereal calculations are closer
to the actual constellations, and
deals with practical matters, it is
therefore more relevant for use
in physical characteristics. In this
case, the Sidereal rising sign
would show the actual physical
appearance of the individual.
My First Horoscope
When I first had my horoscope
calculated by a Western
astrologer, using the Tropical
Zodiac, the time I was originally
given by my mother was
sometime in the morning,
around 9.00 am. My Tropical
chart was calculated with the
sign Scorpio rising. A few
months later, the astrologer had
changed to Sidereal calculations.
In the meantime, I received my
correct birth time of 12.53 pm
and had my Sidereal chart
calculated using the new time.
The rising sign was still Scorpio!
What if I had received the
correct time in the first instance
and had the sign Sagittarius
calculated for my Tropical chart?
Would I have followed astrology
so closely with a different sign?
Yes, of course, because I can just as
easily identify with Sagittarius as I do
with Scorpio – but in different ways.
Sagittarius is symbolic of how I
operate on a certain level, certainly;
my love of freedom and of travel, as
well as my philosophical nature.
However, I am more physically
Scorpio rising; a typically lean ‘Mars
type’, while secrets have formed the
bulk of my life experience.
Parasara describes Scorpio as
having a ‘slender’ and ‘hairy’
physique (Sharma, 1994). Although
only a general indication, this is
certainly true in my case. Planets in
the rising sign will show complexion
and will not usually change between
Sidereal and Tropical calculations.
Ophiuchus
I can add a third ‘sign’ into the
mix as I was born with Ophiuchus
rising too - the so-called '13th sign'
of the Zodiac, which is a
constellation and not one of the 12
traditional signs. There are many
constellations, of course. Astrology,
East or West, has always used signs,
dividing the Zodiac into 12 equal
parts.
I strongly identify with the
symbolism of Ophiuchus; the
‘serpent bearer’, having spent my life
struggling to contain the Kundalini
Shakti (primal energy), which can
become destructive for those with
Sidereal Scorpio rising.
The end of Sidereal Scorpio is
where we see Ophiuchus and the
lunar mansion Jyestha, ruled by
Indra, the chief of the gods; the deity
that compels us to take control of
our earth-based desires; to elevate
us higher on a spiritual quest. This
has been the main theme of my life.
6 - Timeline Astrology 2019

In recent years I have noted that
some Vedic astrologers have
challenged the use of the Sidereal
Zodiac and have taken to using the
Tropical Zodiac within the
interpretative techniques of
traditional Jyotish. And while I have
kept an open mind about these
calculations, I have not seen them to
work as effectively as Sidereal
calculations for Jyotish. One
drawback of using the Tropical
Zodiac within traditional Jyotish is
the calculation for ‘planetary periods’
and the commonly used
Vimshotari Dasa (‘120-year’ cycle),
calculated from the Moon. While you
may be able to argue that Tropical
Sagittarius describes my character as
much as Sidereal Scorpio, what you
cannot argue is how my life has
unfolded. This has been the case in
relation to my Sidereal Moon
position.
Vedic astrologer Vic DiCara has
come up with a solution for this. He
has kept the lunar signs Sidereal - so
planetary periods remain the same -
but has removed the Sun signs from
Sidereal calculations; to give them
Tropical placements. This pulls apart
the lunar signs from the solar signs,
and all the intricacies of these when
combined.
In recent years,
I have noted
that some Vedic
astrologers
have challenged
the use of the
Sidereal Zodiac
Outer Planets
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are
not visible to the naked eye and
were not discovered until recently
in a historical context. Therefore,
they are not included in
traditional Jyotish. They are often
referred to as the ‘outer planets'
by astrologers. They are
constantly influencing us - like a
background hum - which is why
they may be transpersonal i.e., we
may, at times, tune out of their
influence due to the constant
transmission.
In an interview with Kapiel Raaj,
titled Secrets of Uranus, Neptune
and Pluto in Vedic Astrology
(KRSchannel, 2015), Vedic
astrologer Ernst Wilhelm
describes Uranus, Neptune and
Pluto in terms of the three gunas
or ‘impulses’ of Vedic thought:
rajas, sattva and tamas; simply
translated here as ‘creation,
‘preservation’ and
‘transformation’. Uranus
represents the impulse to create,
often translated as individuality;
Neptune represents the impulse
to preserve, to maintain life, no
matter the form; and Pluto
represents the impulse to
transform, to change and
transcend.
These three impulses are
always influencing us,
representing something closer
than our own breath. When these
‘invisible’ planets connect with a
visible planet, their influence
becomes more obvious. And yet,
anyone who spends time studying
their natal positions and transits
could not deny their relevance on
an ongoing basis.
But herein lies a problem for
many Jyotishi. If they do not include
them, they will never be open to
experiencing how they could use
them alongside traditional methods -
often substituting the north and
south nodes of the Moon, Rahu and
Ketu, to explain certain
phenomenon; missing out on a
multi-layered analysis by using all of
them.
Although I do superimpose the
outer planets for my interpretations,
I do not give them rulership of signs
or dignity based on position. This
would muddy the waters of Vedic
interpretations, and the perfectly
intricate model using 9 Grahas
(‘graspers’), or ‘planets’, 12 solar
signs and 27 lunar signs.
How on earth
do the planets
influence us?
Let’s look at Pluto in relation to its
transits through both Zodiacs. Pluto
moved into Sidereal Sagittarius in
2005, and then into Tropical
Capricorn in 2008. Observing its
Tropical transit, we can certainly see
the need for change in governments
the world over since the economic
crash of 2008.
From a Sidereal perspective, the
actual breaking down of the
establishment truly begins once
Pluto moves into sidereal Capricorn
in early 2020 and for the following
two decades. This follows on from a
dip in ethical behaviour and religious
fundamentalism, as seen in Pluto’s
transit in Sidereal Sagittarius since
2005. This has brought an altered
state of perception and an intense
awareness of what is fake, as well as
the darker aspects of those that lead
us.
In one sense, Pluto in Tropical
Capricorn is breaking down the
establishment, but it has been
more of an idea, as we are
prepared for the actual changes to
come. Once it moves into sidereal
Capricorn, this will become very
real indeed.
The Zodiac Problem
So, how do we approach the
‘problem’ of the two Zodiacs?
Here is what I would suggest: Study
one in-depth and work with it until
you are an expert. Keep an open
mind to other points of view, without
substituting the integrity of your
chosen Zodiac.
From time immemorial, people
have influenced each other from
different cultures, using various
points of view.
Study one indepth
and work
with it until you
are an expert.
Keep an open
mind about other
points of view,
without
substituting the
integrity of your
chosen Zodiac
The sharing of knowledge has
sped up thanks to the internet;
however, we just may have to reign
in our wandering minds and stick
to our tried and tested techniques
when helping clients who probably
couldn’t care less about the Zodiac
being used - they just need clear
guidance.
ASTERIAN
ASTROLOGY
& THE MOON The
By Jade Luna
Moon is the Earth's
companion satellite, though some
astronomers believe that it
approaches being a planet in its
own right. The Moon is large
enough for its gravity to affect the
Earth, stabilizing its orbit and
producing the regular ebb and
flow of the tides. The Moon is also
familiar to us for its
different phases, waxing and
waning in appearance in an
unchanging cycle.
The Moon orbits the Earth in 28
days, spending a fleeting 2.33
days in each of the Signs of the
zodiac. Recently, more accurate
measurements of the Lunar orbital
period have revealed two
different numbers, depending on
viewpoint. The synodic period
is measured relative to the Sun
and gives us a period of 29.5
days from new Moon to new Moon,
the start of the lunar month.
When observed from the Earth,
and relative to a fixed point in
space, the sidereal period is 27.3
days with minor variations. In
order to give a figure in whole
numbers for ease of astrological
calculation the Lunar orbit can be
approximated to 27.75 days
which then returns a period of 54
hours or 2.25 days for the
Lunar transit of each Sign.
Timeline Astrology 2019 - 9

The Moon is the most important
'planet' in a person's birth chart,
thus Asterian Astrology is
observed by the Moon first and
Sun second. In the greatest sense,
the Moon is the concept of nature
on all levels as what nurtures,
sustains, protects, and yet is
always changing; we say Mother
Nature.
The Lunar cycle
correlates with the menstrual cycle
of women, influences the
tides of the oceans, and can be
very important in agriculture as
when to plant and when to reap.
The Moon controls the tides on
this planet and human beings are
70% water, therefore the Moon
describes the nature of the basic
self. The Moon as the
Earth's satellite symbolizes the
reflection of the soul in and
around the body. In a general
sense this is the psychic material
world, more specifically the Moon
represents the personality,
feelings, moods, habits, memory,
impressionability,
imagination, emotions, and the
subconscious. The subconscious
stores all your karma and
impressions from previous lives.
Lunar Astrology assists in helping a
person become aware of
their subconscious, thus speeding
up the process of self-awareness.
The Moon is a prevalent symbol
for every human being on this
planet. In ancient times writers
referred to the soul as feminine
and symbolized by the Moon. All
beings come from the same
place, a mother's womb.
The first part of life in the womb
and as a baby relate to the Moon,
because the mother is the
dominant influence during this
period.
This is also significant for the
development of the basic self which
will remember everything the
conscious self forgets.
Asterian Astrology then becomes
important because the Moon
continually fluctuates as it waxes
from new Moon to full Moon and
wanes down to a new Moon again.
Every being on the planet is directly
affected by this process.
The Sun, Mercury, Venus, and
Mars usually change signs only about
once a month, and the outer planets
in periods of years.
But the Moon traverses the zodiac in
27.3 days. So, the day-to-day
interpretations are usually based
primarily on changes of the Moon
Sign and the Lunar Mansion.
It is interesting to note that the
astrology columns which usually
appear in daily papers for
the Sun Signs are often based
primarily on the position of the
Moon.
The Moon is a
prevalent symbol for
every human being
on this
planet. In ancient
times writers referred
to the soul as
feminine
and symbolized by
the Moon. All beings
come from the same
place, a mother's
womb
The full Moon tends to bring
out extremes of the basic self in
eating, drinking, emotions, desires,
etc. Thus, the word lunacy
came from Luna, or Moon. In
ancient culture they worshiped
the Moon more than the Sun.
In the world of astrology, the Sun
symbolizes the light body. Of
course, the light body is
transcendent of the distinction
between male and female, and the
symbolism of the Sun or Moon.
However, these concepts have
been used to point to the higher
truth that is beyond conception,
but just is.
STARS (LUNAR MANSIONS)
There are 27 Star (Lunar
Mansion) divisions of the sky,
identified by a prominent cluster
of stars in and around the
constellations. The Moon passes
through them during its monthly
cycle, as used in ancient
astronomy and astrology.
Therefore, each Star represents a
division of the ecliptic similar
to the zodiac (13°20 each instead
of the 30° for each zodiac
Sign, although Prometheus and
Vulcan are a little smaller). The
orbit of the Moon is 27.3 days, so
the Moon takes approximately one
day to pass through each Star.
The starting point for a Star is
the place on the ecliptic directly
opposite of the star Spica (other
slightly different definitions
exist). It is called the "Start of
Aries". The ecliptic is divided
into each of the Stars eastward.
Each Star is governed as 'Lord' by
one of the nine main planets
in the following sequence:
South Node, Venus, Sun, Moon,
Mars, North Node, Jupiter, Saturn
and Mercury.
10 - Timeline Astrology 2019

This cycle repeats itself three
times to cover all 27 Lunar
mansions/Stars; my book reveals
each of the 27 Stars and their
meanings, with their equivalent
positions in the Sidereal Zodiac.
In astrology the Stars are a
division of the ecliptic similar to
the Zodiac. The mansion
associated with a given date
corresponds to a portion of the
constellation wherein the Moon is
passing through at that time.
The Sun, the Secondary Presence
The ecliptic, or the position of
Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn,
Aquarius and Pisces. Zodiac
Signs were originally determined
by which constellation the
Sun was "in" on the day you were
born.
Early astronomers observed the
Sun traveling through the Signs
of the Zodiac in the course of one
year, spending about a month
in each. Thus, they calculated each
constellation extends 30
degrees across the ecliptic.
However, a phenomenon called
''precession'' has altered the
position of the constellations we
see today.
There are 27 Stars,
covering 13°20
degrees of the
ecliptic
More Understanding of
Precession and Astrology
The first day of spring in the
Northern Hemisphere was
once marked by the zero point of
the Zodiac. Astronomers call this
the vernal equinox and it occurs as
the ecliptic and celestial
equator intersect.
Around 600 BCE, the zero point
was in Aries and was called the
"first point of Aries." The
constellation Aries encompassed
the first 30 degrees of the ecliptic;
from 30 to 60 degrees was
Taurus; from 60 to 90 degrees was
Gemini; and so on for all
twelve constellations of the Zodiac.
The Earth continually wobbles
around its axis in a 25,800-year
cycle. This wobble, called
precession, is caused by the
gravitational attraction of the
Moon on Earth's equatorial bulge.
Over the past two-and-a-half
millennia, this wobble has caused
the intersection point between the
celestial equator and the
ecliptic to move west along the
ecliptic by 36 degrees, or almost
exactly one-tenth of the way
around. This means that the Signs
have slipped one-tenth, or almost
one whole month, of the way
around the sky to the west, relative
to the stars beyond.
For instance, those born
between March 21 and April 19
consider themselves to be Aries.
Today, the Sun is no longer
within the constellation of Aries
during much of that period.
From March 13 to April 13, the Sun
is in the constellation of Pisces,
which demonstrates the precession
of the equinoxes from 600 BCE to
2600.
Nakshatra
Cards
By Madhuri
Every star constellation that makes up a
Nakshatra has a presiding, indwelling or ruling
deity. When we become familiar with the
mythology surrounding the deity, considered the
ruler of a Nakshatra, we gain a lot of insight into the
qualities of that Nakshatra.
This wisdom was fine-tuned and brought forth by
the sages of ancient India. We find that when we
implement their advice and wisdom, we can
advance the development of our soul and, at the
same time, take full opportunity of leading a
fulfilling life.
The 27 Nakshatras are the constellations of the
Moon (feminine), while the signs we are more
familiar with (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, etc.) are
based on the movement of the Sun (masculine).
Hence, when we study the energies of these lunar
star signs, we become more aware of the instinctual
and nurturing aspects within ourselves.
The Three Lokas
Svah Loka
The realm of the distant stars
is the domain of the devas. The
immortal gods and goddesses
dwell here. In the Vedic
tradition, it is known as Deva, or
Svah, Loka. Svah Loka is so far
removed from our earthly
plane it can quite often prove to
be beyond our human
understanding. It is a place
where our earthly rules and
regulations do not always apply
in the same way. We will need
to expand our imagination if we
want a glimpse into that world.
The energies from this cosmic
realm shine on us, while the
science of Jyotish helps us to
integrate these influences in
our daily lives. This is the realm
of the stars where the
Nakshatras are located.
Bhuva Loka
The location of Bhuva Loka, the
realm of the sky and the
demigods, is found in the plane of
the solar system, where we find
our planets. We may regard the
planets as demigods or
personalities. In Vedic tradition,
mythologies surround each
planetary being, or, more
appropriately, each Graha, (as the
planetary bodies we work with in
astrology are not always strictly
speaking planets). The Sun, the
Moon, Rahu (north node) and
Ketu (south node) can be named
as Grahas but are not planets.
Bhuva Loka is much closer to our
field of experience. The placement
of the Grahas in our birth chart,
will determine which Nakshatras
will influence our lives, and how.
Bhuh Loka
Bhuh Loka is right here on the
earthly plane. This is where we,
as human beings, are compelled
to play out our lives and take
part in the Divine Lila, the ‘play of
God’. It is on this plane that we
introduce the house system of
astrology; it determines the
areas of life specific planetary
and star energies become
apparent. Jyotish is an ancient
Vedic science that combines the
knowledge of the three Lokas.
We can use it to make sense of
our individual life on planet
Earth, giving us insight in the
development of our soul, and
helping us play the game of life
to our greatest potential in
accordance with the eternal
cosmic principle.
27 Nakshatra Cards
The Nakshatra cards were
created to make the wisdom of
the stars accessible to anyone,
but mainly with the aim of giving
students of Jyotish a quick and
easy view of the qualities of each
Nakshatra. A book, titled
‘Science of Light’ comes with the
27 large cards, which contains
an introduction into Jyotish and
further explanations on each
Nakshatra. The cards can be
used by anyone for advice and
wisdom whether there is an
interest in astrology or not. The
idea is to whet the appetite and
spark an interest in Jyotish
through playing with the cards
and reading the advice for each
Nakhatra in the book.
On the cards you’ll find many
keywords associated with each
Nakshatra, these words will
activate the left side of the brain
and our rational thinking.
The artwork on the cards
depicts the traditional symbols
and sometimes the deities that
are associated with the
Nakshatras.
These pictures will speak to our
intuition, our instincts and directly
to our heart; the right side of our
brain.
Working with the cards will
balance our understanding so we
can integrate the knowledge on
both levels. These cards are
designed to give us a quick
overview of the qualities
associated with each Nakshatra.
They are designed to be a fun and
an introduction to further study.
The information on each
Nakshatra as found on the cards
is quite extensive, although by
necessity presented in very
condensed form. In the depiction
of the symbols, I used free artistic
license while staying true to the
original and ancient symbols
traditionally assigned to each
Nakshatra. Symbols contain
compact information that can be
intuitively accessed by observing
and contemplating them. The
urge to depict these ancient
symbols visually was the main
inspiration to produce the cards.
Let’s look at a couple of the cards to
show how you could use them!
Ashlesha: ‘The Clinging Star’
Ashlesha is associated with
Mercury and lies entirely in the sign
of Cancer, which is ruled by the
Moon. The energy here is
comparable with a Mercury/ Moon
conjunction. Mercury, ever thinking,
combining, writing scenarios may
somewhat override the Moon’s
power to care unconditionally and
may make the energy of this
Nakshatra a bit too controlling of
loved ones at times. Mercury always
wants the last word. Hanging on too
tight perhaps, hence the name: The
Clinging Star.
The deities here are the Nagas;
a race of half human–half snake
beings. Although the Nagas belong in
the lowest of the nether-realms, they
are the rulers of all the underworlds.
Like the Dragons of old guarding
immense treasures, the Nagas
possess untold riches. They freely live
and may be encountered in all the
realms: Heavens, Earth, and
Underworlds.
The symbols for Ashlesha are two
entwining snakes, a very sensual
picture, and a three times coiled
snake, like the sleeping Kundalini
force. We can picture the DNA spiral
too, and genetic manipulation. It is
important to note that people with a
prominent Ashlesha are usually not
aware of their immense power, (the
power to inflict poison); they can hurt
others more than they realize.
When we consider Ashlesha
Nakshatra, we will find it shrouded
in mystery, because the Nagas or
Serpent beings associated with
these stars are beings from the
unseen underworld. In legends from
around the world we often find
them living in caves or in the depths
of lakes and oceans as sea monsters
or dragons. The Nagas from the
Indian tradition are a very specific
race of beings, living in the deepest
underworld, in a dazzling realm
encrusted with glittering precious
jewels. They have access to all
realms, including this Earth, and
they can change form at will.
Applied to us as human beings
this teaches us shamanic wisdom. It
can give us the ability to travel to
different realms to bring back advice
and healing to others, and,
shamanic style, may give us the
ability to shape-shift as we may
need to travel in the guise of
animals or other beings.
Keywords:
Spirituality, jealousy,
intimacy, entanglement,
power, poison, immortality,
magnetism, enlightenment,
intuition, psychic abilities,
suspicion, mistrust, overprotective,
magical powers,
ruthless, instinct.
The main symbol is 2 entwined
snakes. We find this in medicine as
the Cadeceus, the 2 snakes coiling
upward along a central staff.
We must be very careful with the
energy of Ashlesha as it can kill as
well as heal. As we know, these
days many people get killed by
modern medicine.
There is enormous power in this
Nakshatra, under its influence we
are often not aware of our own
power and how we can hurt
others. We can develop deep
secret knowledge through
Ashlesha, if we picture the 2 coiling
snakes as the DNA helix, we see
Ashlesha may have the knowledge
of the primary building blocks of
life itself. If not carefully handled,
this deep knowledge can give rise
to abuse. (genetic manipulation,
for example).
We can also see the entwining
snakes as intimate embraces or
sexual passion, again an area that
can lead to abuse, mistrust and
jealousy. The same symbol
denotes protection of loved ones
that goes extreme and becomes
smothering or strangling.
Obviously, this is also the symbol
for the rising Kundalini force,
which again must be handled with
extreme care, and must be used
only for the right reasons.
The energy of this Nakshatra
can kill or heal. It can make us
conceal many secrets, give us
great power, psychic abilities and
good instincts. We could say that a
great battle between good and evil
takes place here. Handle these
energies with care, rather than
going down in suspicion, secrecy
and false pride, choose to use this
power for enlightenment, healing,
and wisdom in service to others.
Development of the soul and
purity are the final goal of
Ashlesha.
Poorvashada: ‘The Invincible Star’
This Nakshatra is associated with
Venus and lies entirely within
Sagittarius, which is ruled by Jupiter.
This Venus/Jupiter combination will
certainly give rise to a lot of
enthusiasm, joy and eagerness, and
a feeling of unlimited good fortune.
No wonder we call Poorvashada
“the invincible star”.
The presiding deity here is Apah,
the goddess of water, the source of
all life. Another name is Varuni, the
female counterpart of Varuna, the
god of the oceans. She bestows
good fortune and happiness.
Delightful Apah is a river goddess, a
fast-flowing body of water, full of
energy, capable of crashing through
any obstacle and reaching the
destination, refreshing and
rejuvenating, while carrying us
swiftly forward.
The Symbols for Poorvashada are
an elephant’s tusk and a (hand held)
fan. The elephant has no trouble to
plow through anything at all,
unstoppable and immensely strong,
using its tusk to remove obstacles
along the way. The fan is an object
of prestige, often beautifully
decorated. It can be used to coyly
hide behind, but for this Nakshatra
it is most needed to cool things
down; the energy here can be quite
exciting.
This Nakshatra teaches us the joy
of living. Its energy is ever optimistic
and full of delight. It gives us lust for
adventure and a rather unrealistic
sense of invincibility. Just like a fastflowing
river revitalizes the land; is
unstoppable and crashes through
any obstacle in its way, so the
energy of Poorvashada moves us
ever forward energetically,
fearlessly, swiftly; fully enjoying
every moment of life with little
thought of past or future.
Caught up in the excitement of
the moment, we can act quite
inconsiderate of others. We may be
agents of destruction at times and
may regret our exuberance
afterwards.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely we will
learn from our mistakes, as we are
carried away by something else
soon enough. Under this influence
we are advised to have a spiritual
attitude, so we may feel a daily
renewal, an invigoration of the soul,
as if purified by the cosmic waters.
Being so enthusiastic, full of faith
and wisdom, we are liable to cram
our convictions down other people’s
throats. Oftentimes, we will be an
inspiration to those around us due
to our delightful, extravagant and
totally unique ways. With
Poorvashada’s energy we follow our
joy and it is certain we will go
‘overboard’ at times. Many times, in
fact.
Keywords:
Enthusiastic, fearless,
victorious, unrealistic,
restless, expansive, wise,
extravagant, unstoppable,
invincible, confrontational,
spiritual, intelligent,
confident, flamboyant,
excited, swift, delightful,
honest, faithful.
The 'Invincible Star' will give us
plenty of courage and makes us
fearless as we are convinced of
winning. We can be serious,
honest and lend a helping hand at
times. Mostly, we do not like to go
out of our way to assist others, we
have a great desire to improve
ourselves and our circumstances,
so be aware that this energy can
make us self-absorbed. Freedom is
essential. Insensitive and even
cruel and aggressive action will be
taken to maintain our freedom if
we are not careful. For the same
reason of protecting our freedom,
we will deliberately surround
ourselves with an air of mystery
and secrecy, thus creating a place
where no one can interfere in our
lives. Most likely we will gather
secret knowledge and wisdom.
After all, the final aim of this
Nakshatra is enlightenment and
liberation.
THE MAGIC
OF THE
MOON
By Amber Patton
For as long as I can remember I have been
drawn to the stars. Many summer nights I would
sneak out my bedroom window and lay on the
warm grass just to watch the moon transform
overhead. I would try to stay awake for as long
as possible, counting the flickering patterns that
formed the Draco constellation and imagine how
the universe would look if that great dragon spat
fire into space. I used to whisper a story about
the sun and moon, and how their transits
seemed to play out a complicated love song as
they danced across the sky.
I believe my childhood fascination with
astronomy influenced my adult path as a witch.
I never seemed to fit into organised religion and
chose to explore the solitary path some
rebellious teens go through. For many years, I
chose to live in denial of my witch half, and
instead honed my obsession with the occult,
numerology and astrology under the bed covers
at night. Between high school and college, I
drifted between paths, downloading
information from philosophy, mythology, and
ancient theory trying to understand their
influence on the mind and universe. But
unfortunately, I forgot the simple joy of looking
up at the moon.
16 - Timeline Astrology 2019

Every witch is different in their practice and
method, but I believe I speak for all when I say the
moon is especially important in witchcraft. Magic
is the balance between light and dark, represented
by the protective and courageous nature of the
sun, and the healing and mothering nature of the
moon. She is not only the embodiment of the
Triple Goddess aspect, but the moon’s monthly
transformation from Full to New and back again
reflects in us all. My shamanic teacher once said,
“If the moon can renew itself each month, then so
can you.” It is a phrase I only started to
understand this past year.
If the moon can renew itself
each month, then so can you
Nearing the end of 2016, I was introduced to
the teachings of Vedic Astrology when I attended a
transit discussion with Gary O’Toole in Galway.
Though I had dabbed in both western astrology
and numerology, nothing in my studies prepared
me for just how in-depth and accurate Gary’s
predications were. In the beginning, I couldn’t
wrap my brain around the theory of it all, but the
logic behind his calculations justified the impact
the transits would have on my life personally and I
was intrigued.
Twenty-five weeks and three courses later, I can
say with certainty that I’ve barely stretched the
surface of Vedic Astrology. And yet, I feel
completely impacted by what I’ve learned thus far.
Not only did I start to understand the vast
mythology surrounding the same planets I grew up
watching on those summer nights, but I gained a
new level of appreciation for personality traits and
values I once disliked about myself. In starting to
understand how the transits could impact day-today
life, I became more aware of how it would
affect people’s reactions and thought patterns. I
began altering minor life choice and intentionally
setting time aside for my own personal rest and
rejuvenation.
This past summer I was thrilled to learn that
Gary planned to teach a course dedicated to
both the Indian and Greco-Roman mythology
surrounding the twenty-seven lunar signs.
What I learned during the nine weeks
invigorated my passion for the moon and
lunar magic. Now, armed with new, impactful
knowledge I study the transits weekly in my
own magical practice. My online presence on
Black Cat Spirit Healing has grown into a
mixture of Hedgewitchery, herbalism and
lunar magic all influenced by the current
planetary transits. I’ve enjoyed combining my
version of witchcraft with Vedic astrology and
have even started to incorporate it into my
homemade spells and remedies for people.
My entire craft has transformed with the
addition of Vedic Astrology and my studies
have pushed me to celebrate aspects of myself
while exposing destructive thought patterns
that no longer serve my highest good. I am
currently on a journey of self-discovery and
feel my connection to spirit and the universe
will continue to grow for the rest of my life.
Romance &
Compatibility in
Your Vedic Chart
Fairy Tales suggest that true love lasts forever, but they never show us how. Once the Prince
kisses Sleeping Beauty or finds the beautiful maiden whose tiny foot fits the glass slipper,
wedding bells ring out over the kingdom and the story is over—with the assumption that
“happily ever after” depends solely upon the right two finding each other.
B y M a r i a n n e J a c u z z i
In India, Jyotishis do a brisk
business in marriage
compatibility. It is probably the
most common reason for
people to consult an astrologer
in India. Traditionally, parents
do it, seeking the best match
possible for their children. After
ticking all the common sense
boxes for a prospective partner
(caste, education, career,
income, physical appearance),
they present the two charts to
an astrologer to see if they
indicate marital harmony.
Without that astrological
correspondence, they see the
marriage as doomed. Though
often economic and social
concerns are foremost in the
minds of parents, what they are
seeking for their children—
within their capacity to
understand it—is sukha,
translated usually as happiness,
though sukha literally means
“good space” (its opposite being
dukha, “bad space“ or
suffering).
Sukha refers to good space
in the broadest possible way,
encompassing social and
economic health in addition
to what we would call
psychological health. Sukha in
life—and marriage is
understood traditionally as
the fulfilment of life in this
world—depends upon both
inward contentment and
outward abundance or
prosperity. The Vedic chart
indicates where the potential
for sukha lies for an individual
and where it tends to be
elusive. Though the
technicalities are complex, the
analysis of two charts for
marriage compatibility
essentially investigates the
same thing: the sukha
potential in the
correspondence between two
charts.
For us modern Westerners,
arranged marriage is totally
foreign. We typically recoil in
horror at the very thought.
For us, marriage begins
with romance, with a magical,
electrical spark that draws
two individuals together.
Neuroscientists have
studied the phenomenon, and
indeed “falling in love” does
have a biochemical
foundation.
Overwhelming desire
arises, its root being
something primal, something
beyond reason or sense,
something belonging perhaps
to the reptilian brain,
something usually flowing out
of a cocktail created by the
juices of Venus, Mars and
Rahu (north node) coming
together in some manner,
with little restraint from
cautious Saturn or discerning
Mercury. Indeed, it is
remarkable and curious how
often people “fall in love” with
someone totally unsuitable
from a practical point of view.
Yet as the saying goes, “Love
is blind.”
18 - Timeline Astrology 2019

Yet what is that blind passion
called love? It can precipitate
some pretty crazy behaviour.
Literature is rife with examples
of its folly. Anthony cries out to
heaven, “Let Rome in Tiber melt”
. . . and turning around his
ship, forsaking empire, power,
politics, war . . . he sails off to
Egypt, into the arms of his
beloved Cleopatra—and what
will soon be the tragic death of
both of them. Yet could it be
otherwise?
In ordinary life, can passion of
that intensity ever ripen into
marital harmony? Maybe or
maybe not. Jyotish can
illuminate not just that
possibility, but also how we
might navigate our life
circumstances to make that
development more likely . . . if
that is truly our desire and if we
are prepared to exert sustained
effort towards it.
Indians understand “love” as
something that grows after
marriage, when all the right
components are already in place
for marital sukha. We start with
“love". Yet from that foundation,
the right components need to
develop so that marital sukha
will flourish. Jyotish transcends
cultural differences, and so it
can serve as a powerful tool for
enhancing marital sukha in both
of these contexts. For us
Westerners, if the passion
happens, then the charts must
indicate a potential for
attraction. However, they may
or may not indicate an easy path
to marital harmony. The
necessary components may or
may not be there, and the
degree of effort required for
realising them can vary
considerably as well.
It is also important to
remember that sukha can
flow from other domains of
life as well (despite the high
regard for marriage in the
Indian tradition). Trying to
squeeze sukha out of a place
where it is not forthcoming
resembles the futile effort of
trying to fit a round peg into a
square hole.
Your individual birth chart
can reveal your aptitude for
relationship in general as well
as your skill in managing
relationship. And even though
they correlate, they are not
the same thing. You can
possess significant interpersonal
skills, yet no matter
how hard you try the marriage
does not last. On the other
hand, some enduring
relationships seem to cohere
based upon a pattern of
constant bickering. For
marriage to endure, the
Seventh House, the Lord of
the Seventh House and Venus
all need to be strong and
unafflicted. But bigger
questions need to be
investigated as well, because
endurance is certainly not the
only criterion for relationship
success.
Fairy tales don’t tell the
truth. A relationship can
provide an abundance of
sukha for a period of time, yet
come to a natural end when
certain transits and dashas
(life cycles) create new
alignments. This is not
necessarily failure; indeed, it
can often precipitate psychospiritual
growth. Relationship
sukha can also flow from
relationships other than
marriage.
For marriage to
endure, the Seventh
House, the Lord of
the Seventh House
and Venus all need
to be strong
The health of other houses
can indicate the degree of
sukha coming through
friends, siblings, parents, or
just about any relationship
you want to investigate. And
then of course, the sukha
potential in a chart might be
something totally other.
Anaïs Nin
The writer Anais Nin had an
extremely afflicted chart for
marriage outcome. A Virgo
Ascendent, Ketu resides in her
Seventh House, Pisces. Her
Seventh House is aspected
not just by Rahu, but Mars
and Saturn as well, so four
malefic planets and no
benefics influence her house
of marriage. In addition, her
Seventh House Lord, Jupiter,
resides in the Sixth House, a
difficult placement, where it is
Combust the Sun, significantly
reducing its power to uplift.
Venus, the planet of romance,
is also in the Sixth House.
Anaïs Nin by Elsa Dorfman, NYC
Timeline Astrology 2019 - 19

Anaïs Nin
Though Nin married
young, her marriage
provided little sukha and did
not last. She had a number of
romantic liaisons throughout
her life, each feeding her
creativity as a writer but
producing little in the way of
conventional marriage sukha.
For her, sukha flowed from
her intuitive gifts (the
positive fruit of the Nodes of
the Moon on her First
House), which distilled life
experience into an
extraordinary canon of
writing.
After analysing the
marriage potential for an
individual, Jyotish can show
the likelihood for marital
sukha to develop with a
particular person rather than
another. Many complex
factors go into this analysis,
and it is a big mistake to
assume a relationship is
doomed or blessed without
considering all the relevant
layers. Analysis of the dashas
and transits in both charts
can also show the stresses
and challenges that may
arise in time for a
relationship and its inherent
capacity to endure or not. Yet
most important of all, Jyotish
reveals the quality of karma
behind all of the above. This
is vital information for happy
living. For some karma is
fixed, nearly impossible to
change. Some can be
changed but only with much
effort, and some can easily
be changed.
She had an extremely
afflicted chart for
marriage outcome. A
Virgo Ascendent, Ketu
resides in her Seventh
House, Pisces
South Indian Style Horoscope
North Indian Style Horoscope
Her Seventh House is
aspected not just by
Rahu, but Mars and
Saturn as well, so four
malefics and no benefics
influence her house of
marriage
This is perhaps the
greatest gift Jyotish offers for
our life in this world, because
it clarifies the path of right
action, pointing out where
our efforts will be most
fruitful and where they are
likely to lead to nothing but
disappointment and
frustration. So much energy
gets wasted in life by people
trying to live out someone
else’s karma—because of an
idea in their heads of how it
is “supposed to be”—instead
of understanding and
embracing their own life
purpose.
Jyotish frees us to
celebrate our unique life
path with gratitude, because
we are instruments of divine
grace, because the path we
have been given and the
paths we choose to take are
ultimately the same thing.
This is true for relationships
as it is true for everything.
So, for you the seeker of
happiness, both temporal
and ultimate—know the
parameters of your chart,
know your limits (for all
human life encounters
limits), and know the path of
light and abundance—
divinely ordained for you.
My Jyotish mentor loved to
say, “A little knowledge is a
dangerous thing.” And how
true that is. Don’t let a
simplistic understanding of
relationship compatibility
ever send you to the divorce
courts. One great thing about
our contemporary society is
that we have thrown away
most of the rules.
20 - Timeline Astrology 2019

Your relationship does not
have to fit into a culturally
prescribed box. You can
create it out of your character
and that of your partner. You
can make up your own rules,
according to the unique
karmic makeup of you and
your beloved . . . because he
or she is (or at least was at
one time) your beloved. Love,
in some form, was the
beginning.
Not all languages are as
promiscuous with the word
“love” as English. We love our
husband, our wife, our child,
our mother, our friend. We
love chocolate, mangoes,
organic cotton, red shoes. We
love 70% off at the Christmas
Sale. We love yoga. We love
God. Some languages reserve
the word “love” for that
romantic heartthrob only, but
not English. . . . Yet is the
English language onto
something? Is there a
common denominator for the
indiscriminate way we throw
around the word “love”?
Love—in the most universal
understanding of the concept
—means a resonance
between two objects. The
energy can be mild or
middling or monumental like
a hurricane. Though all
planets can indicate certain
tones, giving nuances to the
quality of our love, Venus is
the planet of love par
excellence. Venus embodies
all aspects of love, and our
English usage of “love” quite
accurately expresses the full
range of Venus’s significance.
Know Venus and you know
Love. Venus represents the
sweetness of all things
sensuous.
Venus is exalted in
Pisces, a place of
cosmic expansion and
unconditional love
The texture of fine silk, the
sheen of gold, an exquisite
blend of spices, lipstick and
roses, the plush seats of a shiny
Ferrari convertible, your hair
glistening in the wind, salt-sea
air invigorating your nostrils,
the music of violins and
children singing from forest
groves, the fingertips of your
beloved upon the warm skin of
your shoulder, lines of poetry
echoing through memory . . . all
things resonant that feed your
resonance too, lifting quite
literally your whole being to an
entirely new level of frequency.
So, wherever you find your
love—and its resonance is
always somewhere and in
something in your chart—
understand that it is a gateway.
For the ultimate manifestation
of the sweetness that is Venus
is spiritual. Love for anything or
anyone mirrors in its essence
the purest form of love, which
is divine love. Divine love is the
highest expression of Venus,
which is why Venus is exalted in
Pisces, place of cosmic
expansion and unconditional
love. Every point in the material
world is a portal to that infinite
realm, because everything and
everyone is ultimately that
same Divine Reality.
Look deeply at the
relationship karma of your
chart and understand that
whatever it indicates for you is
whatever you need most at this
time for your spiritual
evolution.
Manifest the unique tone of
that love—and let it sing—
remembering always it
belongs to Divine Love and
trusting that Divine Love has
shaped you into a perfect
instrument. Divine Love,
through the unique
configuration of the planets in
your chart, is playing a perfect
song through you. The more
you understand that music,
the more skillfully you
participate in its expression.
SYSTEMS APPROACH
TO VEDIC ASTROLOGY
By John Fyfe
Photograph Steven Ramon
In 1993, I began my journey into
the world of Vedic Astrology. This
brought me to India to study with
Professor Choudhry who was
teaching the Systems Approach to
Vedic astrology. Professor
Choudhry had taught traditional
Vedic astrology for 20 years,
working with K.N. Rao at his
institute.
The Systems Approach changed
some basic philosophies in
traditional Vedic astrology. Initially,
Mr. Choudhry received a great deal
of criticism for making these
changes, but after several years the
professor’s system was becoming
known to help students cut to the
chase when defining a person’s
chart.
I had almost five years of self-study
before I landed on the professor’s
doorstep to become his pupil.
For many months the professor and I
met at one of New Delhi’s popular
hotels where we would sip chai and
munch on an assortment of Indian
delicacies while we perused and
analysed chart upon chart. I spent six
hours a day with the professor and
then studied an additional 4 to 6 hours
in the evening on the rooftop of my
guesthouse. I came to see in a short
time that I was able to pinpoint the
strengths and weakness of planets
within minutes. I was thrilled to finally
become confident with my analysis of
a chart after years of deliberating;
going back and forth with my
conclusions. The next step for me was
how to put that into layman’s language
for my clients to understand.
“Experience,” Mr. Choudhry said to
me. “Practice and experience and then
you will become a true Jyotishi (Vedic
astrologer). Professor Choudhry was
indeed a pioneer of the Systems
Approach and I will be eternally
grateful to him. He died in August of
2017 at the age of 62.
Most Effective Point
The Systems Approach uses a
technique that we call the Most
Effective Point (MEP), which stipulates
that any planet within 5 degrees of the
ascendant degree, in any sign, will
become more powerful, for better or
worse. For example, an ascendant at 15
degrees that has Jupiter at 14 degrees
will enhance Jupiter’s strength by 80%.
If Jupiter were at 13 degrees, then the
effect would be at 60%, at 12 degrees
the impact would be 40%, and so forth.
22 - Timeline Astrology 2019

The same is to be considered
when a planet is past the 15-
degree point of the ascendant,
meaning that a planet at 16
degrees would also have an 80%
impact and when at 17 degrees,
the effect would be at 60%.
If Jupiter is a benefic planet
(Jupiter is a malefic for Capricorn,
Cancer and Taurus ascendants),
then much will become
enhanced for that person,
especially when in a Jupiter
Dasha (planetary period). More
doors will open for these people
when this planet is close to the
MEP.
The MEP theory applies to all
planets that are within five
degrees of the ascendant degree.
Therefore Saturn, Mars, Rahu
and Ketu (the north and south
node) will often bring constant
challenges to a person when
they are within the MEP. Their
malefic effect would damage
houses they occupy as well as
houses they aspect.
They would afflict any planets
that they conjoin or aspect, and
this affliction would vary
according to how many degrees
they are within. Any malefic
planet within 1 degree of the
MEP will be severe.
Charts having the Sun at the
MEP in the 10th house, (the
house signifying a person’s
purpose and fame), have been
shown for those in the limelight
or, at the very least, are
recognized by their peers and
friends to some degree. Many
people who become public
figures have this configuration.
However, don’t get into a
bother if you don’t have benefic
planets at the MEP in your chart,
for you will experience these
occurrences from the planets in
transit.
MEP applies to all
planets within five degrees
of the ascendant degree
Every month you will have the
Sun passing through the MEP in
your chart lasting for ten days;
with the Moon, this occurrence will
take place ten hours every two and
half days. Therefore, it is important
to know your chart and be able to
make the best of things when
these power points occur with
your planets!
People born with a benefic
planet at the MEP will have this
positive energy as a constant in
their lives, but other factors could
neutralize or even derail this
strong placement, such as a
malefic Saturn on their MEP.
All planets will have a profound
effect when they reach the MEP,
and they will affect the houses
they aspect as well. Venus,
Mercury, Moon and the Sun only
have a 7th house aspect which is
the opposition house from where
they are situated. However, Mars,
aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th
houses from where it’s placed,
Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and
10th, while Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu
aspect houses 5, 7 and 9. All
planets have a profound effect
when they are at the MEP.
The systems approach also looks
at the Mooltrikona (the natural
home for planets) which
determines when benefic planets
become malefic. Planets, except
for the Moon and the Sun, govern
two signs and therefore the
Mooltrikona is the primary sign for
each planet. For example, Jupiter
rules Sagittarius and Pisces, with
Sagittarius being the main sign for
Jupiter, becoming its Mooltrikona
sign.
Saturn rules Capricorn and
Aquarius, with Aquarius becoming
the Mooltrikona sign for Saturn.
With Venus, the Mooltrikona sign is
Libra; for Mercury, its Virgo; for
Mars its Aries, and for the Sun and
Moon, it is Leo and Cancer.
When any of these Mooltrikona
signs are in the 6th, 8th or 12th
house, the planet which rules this
Mooltrikona sign becomes a
malefic and they will afflict planets,
as well as houses that they aspect
when they are within five degrees
of the MEP. The same applies to
benefic planets who are also within
5 degrees, enhancing planets, and
houses, they aspect. Therefore,
Venus, Moon, Jupiter and Mercury,
generally known as benefic planets,
can bring great difficulties when
they are categorized as a malefic.
24 - Timeline Astrology 2019

Sweeping changes take place in 2019, interrupting
the current order. This has a profound impact on
ethics, laws and truth; holding to account
institutions and individuals in charge of upholding
these, such as leaders, teachers, judges and priests.
As planets gather in Sagittarius, including the
sign’s ruler, Jupiter; joining Saturn and Pluto, the
stage is set for some big shake ups to follow that will
reshape and reorder our world in the coming years.
But the old order must break down first! Things
starts to break down as soon as the south node
(Ketu) joins Pluto in March, just as Jupiter stations at
0 degrees of Sagittarius.
We experience further destabilization as the
south node joins Saturn, transiting alongside each
other from April until October; the keynote
conjunction of 2019, and one that will leave its mark
for years to come. Saturn requires discipline; that
we face reality, while the south node makes us
reject our responsibilities. This is tricky.
It may seem like the very fabric of society is being
ripped apart in 2019, but we must remind ourselves
that certain things need to be uprooted and
removed if they stand in the way of progress -
whatever that means to you personally.
The south node gives us a sense of cosmic
perfection, often at the expense of material
satisfaction. That sense of being struck by the
absolute destructive, yet awe inspiring, capabilities
of nature, for example. This will likely take a watery
route in 2019 due to the lunar sign involved (Purva
Asadha). Water shortages and contamination are
also possible. We want to check out on some level
(south node), even though we know we must face
up to reality (Saturn).
Things will be brought up from the past, to be
dealt with now; things that cannot be put off any
longer. It’s not enough to know, we must act on new
information. However, we are likely to leave it until it
gets so bad that we have no choice left. This is what
we do, and the journey from Sagittarius to
Capricorn, which begins in 2019, and takes a firmer
hold in 2020. It’s time to get real, and realize that
reality is our friend, not our enemy, as we delve into
the untruths that have taken hold and see what
must be removed and what must be restored.
2019 Transits
If you know your rising sign (physical), your Moon
(mental) sign and your Sun (essential) sign, you can
read each transit in relation to these. It's also a
good idea to keep an eye on your 'ruling planet': the
planet which rules your sign.
Keep a close eye on the planet which is triggered
in your own chart, through what is known as dasas
(planetary periods) in Jyotish. Although we each
experience all of the planets all year on some level
(cycles can be broken down to 6 levels, from decadelong
cycles, to mere hours), the first, second and
third levels have a longer lasting influence.
Ruling Planets
Leo is ruled by the Sun, Cancer by the Moon,
Gemini and Virgo by Mercury, Taurus and Libra by
Venus, Aries and Scorpio by Mars, Sagittarius and
Pisces by Jupiter, Capricorn and Aquarius by Saturn.
The south node (Ketu) co-rules Scorpio with Mars,
while the north node (Rahu) co-rules Aquarius with
Saturn.
Aspects
Each sign governs an area of life, or 'house'. When
a planet transits that area, it influences it in some
way. Planets also strongly aspect or influence other
areas depending on their line of vision. Every planet
influences all other areas to some degree, but each
Timeline Astrology 2019 - 25

January
The New Year begins with Saturn in combustion
(conjunct the Sun), somewhat dampening the mood
and requiring us to focus our energy. This sense of
withdrawal after the festivities is increased by the
waning Moon which asks us to begin anew on
January 5/6. This new Moon is a partial solar
eclipse in Purva Asadha; the lunar sign where we see
the goddess of the waters, Apah, with water issues
prominent for the very start.
This eclipse reveals something of the dynamics of
power over the weak, the deceptions of those in
government over its people, for example. Mercury
transits this degree by mid-January, while Saturn
transits here in February, July and October. We can
expect some things to be unearthed then.
The Sun enters Saturn’s sign, Capricorn on
January 14, bringing further Saturn-type themes for
the remainder of the winter. This is the case every
year, of course. However, this year Saturn aspects
Aquarius. Saturn represents the established order,
while the Sun represents rulers and governments.
Their conjunction lead to power struggles, while the
Sun’s transit through Saturn’s signs until mid-March
highlights public needs and government
responsibilities during the winter months.
The full Moon is on January 21 and this is also a
total lunar eclipse in the lunar sign, Pushya. This
lunar sign is ruled by Brihaspati, adviser to the gods,
and represents nourishment; of body, mind and
soul. This eclipse brings up blocks AND
breakthroughs in relation to what we're being
nourished by. Mercury enters Capricorn on this
day too, bringing a need to talk about these issues
in a pragmatic manner. The focus on Cancer and
Capricorn highlights the balance we must achieve
between doing what we must (Capricorn), even if we
don’t feel like it (Cancer). With Jupiter coming to
exact conjunction with Venus in Scorpio by January
23, and Jupiter influencing the full Moon, there is
certainly the possibility that we will veer towards too
much pleasure seeking to avoid dealing with the
harsh reality. Although a period to explore the
sensual side of life, the hidden dynamics in seeking
comfort and nourishment are played out.
Venus then moves to the end of Scorpio,
towards the tail of the Scorpion, and the lunar
sign, Mula, the juncture between Scorpio and
Sagittarius on January 29, where Jupiter will
station later in March/April. This give insights into
a major blip ahead; the dip that occurs in relation
the economy and a sense of order.
February
Mars moves out of a helpful exchange with
Jupiter and into its own sign, Aries on February 5.
Mars is active in its own sign. It moves into a
conjunction with Uranus on February 13/14;
showing an exciting and thrilling Valentine's Day.
Mars may like to have things straight forward, but
nothing is straight forward about Uranus! Mars and
Uranus in Aries is more conducive to self-interest
than sharing the love, despite the Sun having just
moved into Aquarius. Uranus' divisive and explosive
influence in Aries will be more apparent at this time.
On a global scale, we are likely to see more
wedges being driven through the cracks that have
appeared in terms of interpersonal relations and
between countries. Aries is self-centred, creating a
'me and them' approach, 'egged on' by Mars and
Uranus.
Mercury enters Aquarius on February 7 and
joins Neptune by February 19. It begins to slow
down at the end of this sign, before backing into it
again by mid-March, eventually leaving Aquarius by
April 10.
Communicating from Aquarius can be
unpredictable at the best of times; while Saturn’s
aspect ensures a heavy thought process around all
the uncertainty and future direction of
humanity. Mercury breaks the rules, before it dives
into Pisces by February 25; a confusing transit for
the planet of rational thought.
The Sun enters Aquarius on February 13 and
into a strong aspect from the signs’ ruler, Saturn.
This places restriction on our energy levels and
vitality, especially as Saturn is in exact aspect to the
Sun on March 8. The Sun in Aquarius opens our
hearts to the world's plight, requiring us to focus on
the balance of power in the world.
26 - Timeline Astrology 2019

Venus joins Saturn in Sagittarius on February
18 and then Pluto by February 23, bringing a level
of restraint to pleasures, while offering up unusual
tastes to indulge in.
Venus moves into Capricorn on February 25, as
Mercury enters Pisces, its sign of debilitation for
the first time (Mercury will return to Pisces on April
10).
During the latter part of February, the Sun is
influenced by Saturn, while Mars, although strong in
its own sign, is transiting a division of weakness.
These complex transits build tensions around the
world, and in the lead up to Brexit, showing much
doubt and fear about our future direction.
March
Mercury stations retrograde in Pisces on March
5, its sign of debilitation. Although Mercury’s
debilitation is cancelled due to its retrograde transit,
it is still a confusing time in March in terms of
practical matters. It’s most certainly not business as
usual! During the half-way point in the retrograde,
Mercury meets the Sun as it moves back into
Aquarius, while the Sun enters Pisces on March 14.
This period grants some insight, albeit shrouded in a
lot of misinformation, especially around March 25
as Mercury joins Neptune, the 'planet of fantasy'.
Mercury is influenced by the north node which casts
an aspect from Mercury's sign, exaggerating the
environment, creating anxiety and irrational
thinking, and hopefully some innovative
approaches.
The mean nodes move into Gemini and
Sagittarius on March 7, while the true nodes move
on March 23. Some astrologers use the true nodal
position for transits, and the mean nodal positions
in horoscopes. Either way, the nodes are moving in
March and setting up a dynamic that will see some
dramatic events down the line, especially by the end
of 2019, as the north node moves into the lunar sign
Ardra, and the south node moves into Mula; two
'sharp and dreadful' lunar mansions.
On March 14, Jupiter enters the gandanta
(undoing) position at the very end of sidereal
Scorpio, and then into the first degree of
Sagittarius on March 29.
Jupiter will remain at this sensitive juncture, as if
slipping into a crack in the pavement, for most of
April, challenging cohesion and a sense of unity.
Venus moves into Aquarius on March 21, joining
Neptune and a retrograde Mercury in a sign that
is all about thinking outside the box. As ever,
boundary issues are prominent when Aquarius is
highlighted, playing out in all kinds of boundary and
border issues.
Mars moves into Taurus on March 22, leaving its
home and fiery transit in Aries, to try and settle
down in Taurus. I write ‘try’ because Mars needs a
little patience in the fixed modality of Taurus,
preferring instead to move about freely. This can
lead to frustrations if we are not mindful, especially
due to Jupiter’s transit in March and April at the
opposite end of the zodiac.
On March 28, Mercury stations direct, just as
Jupiter is about to enter Sagittarius, while the Moon
meets up with the south node, Pluto and Saturn in
Sagittarius. This is very confusing indeed and
reflects the uncertainty and volatility of Brexit at the
end of the month. Mercury will join Neptune for a
second time in Aquarius, as we continue to
experience Saturn’s conjunction with the south node
(coming to exact conjunction in April). With Mars in
Taurus and Jupiter about to leave Scorpio, it brings
awareness to the delicate balance of comfort and
security, while being vulnerable to changes we are
not in control of.
By March 29, Jupiter has moved to 0 degrees of
Mula (lunar sign) in Sagittarius, while Saturn and
Pluto join the south node, as well as the Moon, at
the other end of the sign. Mars looks on from
Taurus. This sends shock waves through the planet
and nothing will be the same again, although
looking back with hindsight, we can accept this is as
part of the story moving forward.
April
There are many indications of change and
uncertainty in April. Mercury is moving
slowly conjunct Neptune (Mercury + Neptune =
confusion), and a long-lasting and impacting
conjunction occurs as Pluto and Saturn meet the
south node (south node with Pluto April 5 - 9).
Timeline Astrology 2019 - 27

These conjunctions show a breaking down of
order (Pluto/South Node in Sagittarius, with
Jupiter stationing retrograde at 0 degrees of
Sagittarius), with confusion over the facts and the
impact it will have on humanity (Mercury/Neptune
in Aquarius).
Venus conjuncts Neptune on April 10, just as
Mercury re-enters its sign of debilitation. This adds
further confusion, while Mercury’s debilitation adds
to a sense of bewilderment. The flip side of these
transits is the ability to shake things up. The world
will certainly be shaken in April.
The Sun takes its annual jaunt through its sign of
exaltation, Aries from April 14. This is a stronger
indication for the latter part of the month, with
further strength added by Venus’ arrival in its sign
of exaltation, Pisces on April 15. Not only does this
place both the Sun and Venus in strong positions, it
helps Mercury’s debilitation.
The Sun is conjunct Uranus while in Aries, exact
on April 22, and this excites us, on the one hand,
but places fear about the sense of what’s new, on
the other; once again highlighting a sense of
individuality and independence.
We still have the uncertainty of Jupiter
retrograde at 0 degrees of Sagittarius, returning to
Scorpio on April 23, but we must get on with the
business of the day.
Saturn and the true south node are exactly
conjunct in April, and the main indication of the
breakdown of a system and order. This can bring up
a lot of fear for the rest of the year, as they remain
within one degree from each other, or exactly
conjunct, until late October. They will conjunct
again in July by exact degree; a highly volatile
period. Understanding what must be broken down
in your own life, in relation to the house position of
Sagittarius, and the indications of Scorpio, Capricorn
and Aquarius, will help you to remove what you
must at this stage, despite the fears (Scorpio) you
may have about these necessary changes.
Pluto stations retrograde at the very end of
sidereal Sagittarius by April 24, hovering at the end
of a new world order, bringing us back to the
drawing board and the rules of a new game.
Pluto's backtrack through the late degrees of
Sagittarius, stationing at the eclipse degrees, in April
and October, means we have more of the old order
to break down before we can move forward with the
new, as we continue the process of dismantling old
structures. The new doesn’t begin in earnest until
early 2020, as Pluto enters sidereal Capricorn, in
exact conjunction with Saturn.
To top off a month of change, we have Saturn
station retrograde on April 30, which means Pluto
and Saturn are both very slow in transit, putting the
pressure on to make these changes.
April requires much patience and discipline, as
these changes happen in our personal lives and
around the globe.
May
May is usually one of the kinder months of the
year, as the Sun, and typically Mercury and Venus,
enter Taurus. This May, however, Mercury and
Venus are placed in Aries, while Saturn and the
south node continue their close conjunction, as
Mars joins the north node in Gemini. All of this
makes for a volatile beginning to a very intense
summer ahead.
Mercury moves out of debilitation and into Aries
on May 3, joining Uranus on May 8. This brings
more of a sense of direction, but not the route we
expected!
Mars moves into Gemini by May 7, into an
opposition to the Saturn/South Node conjunction, as
well as Pluto. This begins a summer of violent
upheavals and destruction, as the softness of May is
severely challenged. Mars moves into a particularly
volatile sign when it moves into Ardra on May 17;
the lunar mansion within sidereal Gemini, getting
ever closer to the north node at the end of the sign.
Mars' conjunction with the north node occurs in
June, while it is also opposite Saturn’s conjunction
with the south node, and later in the month
opposing Pluto. This is highly volatile.
Venus moves into Aries on May 10, conjunct
Uranus on May 18. It’s now out of its sign of
exaltation, further inflaming the situation in Mars’
sign in May, with the Sun and Mercury in Aries also.
28 - Timeline Astrology 2019

The Sun moves into Taurus on May 15, opposing
Jupiter which continues to retrograde through
Scorpio. This feels more grounded, while Jupiter gets
us back to the drawing board.
Mercury joins the Sun in Taurus on May 21, after
it enters the sign on May 18, further enhancing a
more practical approach to all the changes
happening for the latter part of the month.
Mercury is opposed by a retrograde Jupiter on
May 31, and we are thankful for some sanity within
the chaos.
June
Saturn and the south node continue to conjunct
in June, exact by the end of the month, as Mars adds
an even more violent tone while in opposition. This
ends with Mars’ debilitation later in the month, and
Mercury joining the aggressive tone. June is highly
volatile as a result, leading to many possibilities for
fighting.
Mercury enters Gemini on June 1, joining Mars
and the north node, while opposing Saturn and the
south node. The summer intensity builds into the
eclipses of July, as planets gathering on either side
of the nodes.
Venus enters Taurus on June 4, bringing the
much-needed comfort from the fraught situation
building in Gemini/Sagittarius. As Venus moves,
however, the Moon joins Mars and Mercury in
Gemini, fueling aggressive communication and
actions, as we retreat from perceived threats by
seeking pleasure and comfort elsewhere.
Mars is conjunct the north node on June 12 and
this frustrates things further, blocking progress, due
to its involvement with to the north node, and
Saturn on the opposite end of the zodiac. This is
highly volatile throughout June and eventually leads
to a burn out when Mars enters its sign of
debilitation, Cancer on June 22, the Solstice.
The Sun enters Gemini on June 15, and although
usually an enjoyable and sociable time of year, we
must be aware of the potential for disturbances and
acts of violence when out and about. Mars and
Mercury are exactly conjunct on June 17, still very
close to the nodes and opposite Saturn and Pluto.
Mercury enters Cancer on June 20, a more
emotional space for communicating from. Neptune
stations retrograde on June 21, the Solstice, in
sidereal Aquarius and the lunar sign, Purva Bhadra.
This is a ‘fierce’ lunar mansion, relating to idealism
and violence. Neptune’s presence simply confuses
us as to what is worth fighting for, or who we are
fighting! One example of this is cybercrime.
Neptune’s retrograde until November 27 adds more
confusion around these issues. Venus enters
Gemini by June 29, leaving the comfort of Taurus.
July
The month begins with the waning Moon and a
total solar eclipse in 'dreadful', but
purposeful Ardra; the lunar mansion contained
within sidereal Gemini. This is a highly volatile
reset point in the year, as we all fight for our
causes.
Saturn and the south node continue to
conjunct in Sagittarius, with the north node
opposite in Gemini. To add to the confusion,
Mercury, the planet which rules where the north
node is placed - stations retrograde in Cancer on
July 7 until August 1. It does so alongside Mars in
debilitation, coming into exact conjunction on July
9. This has the potential to create at least some
arguments, and at most, some potential for warlike
situations. Mercury returns to Gemini on July
30, as it briefly revisits the last degree of the sign
until August 2.
The Sun joins the north node on July 9,
opposing Saturn and the south node. A
Sun/Saturn opposition is enough to trigger power
struggles, but with the nodes we can see even
more potential for disturbances and confusion.
The Sun enters sidereal Cancer on July 16 for the
full Moon phase in Capricorn, highlighting the
balance between private and public, but not
before opposing Pluto, on July 14. This leads to
further power struggles; behind the scenes and in
plain view, as we experience a partial lunar
eclipse on July 16/17, in Uttara Asadha, the
'unchallenged' lunar sign, challenging us to make
the necessary changes.
Timeline Astrology 2019 - 29

Venus joins the north node on July 18, after
opposing Saturn on July 16. With Mercury and
Jupiter retrograde at this time, ruling the signs
involved, we are likely to see some complications in
all kinds of affairs at this time.
Venus enters Cancer on July 23, joining Mercury
in Cancer on July 24, before Mercury reenters
Gemini on July 30. A Venus/Mercury
combination is usually easy and fun, but this
conjunction is complicated by Mercury’s retrograde.
Be mindful of this in terms of your practical life,
including business and travel plans, as well as
relational matters in general.
August
Although Saturn and the nodes begin to separate
a little in August, we are not out of the woods yet, as
they continue to transit alongside each other due to
Saturn’s retrograde until the end of September;
returning Saturn to an exact conjunction with the
south node in October.
Mercury stations direct on August 1, at the very
edge of Gemini, before returning to Cancer on
August 2. We’re moving over emotional territory
already covered and should be more able to at least
understand the dynamics a little better this time
around.
Mars enters Leo on August 8, adding more
strength and fire to the mix in late summer. The
initial move is weak and sensitive as Mars moves
from its exact degree of debilitation on August 6
into a position of strength in Leo.
Jupiter then stations direct in Mars’ sign,
Scorpio, on August 11, bringing more clarity in how
to move beyond a highly volatile and, hopefully, a
highly productive summer period.
Venus enters Leo on August 16, followed by the
Sun on August 17, and Mercury, on August 26.
This means Venus is in combustion and travelling
through the sensitive juncture between Cancer and
Leo: gandanta (undoing). Venus significations are
hampered at this time, including diplomacy and fair
play, while the Sun's strength then comes into our
lives in a more robust way, as it joins Mars in Leo,
adding further fuel to the flame.
September
Mars is in complete combustion on September
1, with the Sun and Mars placed in the center of
Leo, a powerful position which offers a purification
through fire. Mercury is not far behind, joining
Mars by exact degree on September 3. This offers
further intensification, requiring us to clarify our
position during the purification.
Venus enters Virgo, its sign of debilitation on
September 9, as we experience the usual burn out
at the end of summer. Thankfully, Mercury enters
Virgo on September 10, cancelling Venus’
debilitation; offering support through better
communication.
Mercury is particularly strong in Virgo, but its
strength is reduced by Venus' weakness. We may
have to forgo our usual efficiency at this time of
year to satisfy our relationships, e.g., we may have
to help someone as we plan our busy lives.
The intensity of the Gemini/Sagittarius axis builds
as the north node enters the ‘dreadful’ lunar
section of Gemini, Ardra on September 12 (mean
node); September 27 (true node). This reaches a
peak into the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020,
rearing its head during the eclipses at that time.
The Sun enters Virgo on September 17, as
Saturn stations direct in Sagittarius on September
18. Saturn’s station grinds many things to a halt
because of its aspect to Virgo and all the planets
placed therein. This brings up more power
struggles; between governments and the people,
and in our personal lives. This is complicated by
Saturn’s conjunction with the south node and its
transit to the previous eclipse degree.
Mars enters Virgo on September 25 and into
Saturn’s strong gaze, while staring back at Saturn. A
Saturn/Mars combination feeds frustrations, and we
feel challenged in dealing with setbacks.
Mercury enters Libra on September 29 and is
the first to leave Saturn’s restrictive gaze, as it
exchanges signs with Venus for a few days. This is a
better situation overall; for relations and practical
matters by the end of the month, but it's not
without its setbacks due to Saturn's continued
influence on the Sun, Mars and Venus in Virgo.
30 - Timeline Astrology 2019

October
Saturn slowly moves forward in October, coming
into an exact conjunction with the south node one
last time. This continues to give us a sense of what
we must do, conflicted with the need to run from
our responsibilities. We might say, ''I know I
shouldn't do this'', while at the same time saying,
''What the hell'''!
Although the nodes are said to be exalted in their
current positions by many astrologers, the strength
of these 'malefics' can bring out the best and worst.
The south node in Sagittarius brings a spiritual
inclination, often by destroying a sense of order.
This increases religious fundamentalism. The north
node in Gemini may add to technological advances,
but it brings with it fear and paranoia, along with the
increased mental stimulation.
Venus enters Libra on October 3, joining
Mercury, and this helps us enjoy life and each
other’s company, while we deal with all we must.
Saturn's slow progress through a sign is reflective of
the need to slowly push on and do what we must.
Pluto stations direct on October 3 in Sagittarius,
just as the Moon joins Jupiter in Scorpio, leading to a
need to look for hidden aspects involved in power
struggles as Pluto transits the upcoming eclipse
degree.
Power, or that lack thereof, becomes an issue when
the Sun enters Libra on October 17, its signs of
debilitation. At least it's out of Saturn’s restrictive gaze
and Venus cancels its debilitation until October 28.
We must look after our energy at this point, although
keeping things on an even keel may be a challenge as
the Sun opposes Uranus on October 20, scattering
our energy even further.
Mercury enters Scorpio on October 23, slowing
in its transit as it does so; in preparation for its
retrograde station on October 31. It will retrograde
back into Libra in November, before re-entering
Scorpio in December, so this is just a preview of
what's to come.
Venus enters Scorpio on October 28, conjunct a
stationary Mercury on October 30. With the Moon
in Scorpio, we can see emotional strength being
sought, although not necessarily easily expressed.
November
November sees Saturn move past the south node
after many months travelling together. Saturn
now moves towards Pluto at the end of sidereal
Sagittarius, offering further conflicts the world will
be jaded by at this point. For real change to occur,
however, we need to be sick and tired of the way
things are.
Jupiter re-enters gandanta (undoing) on
November 1, bringing us back to themes of
March/April. Jupiter enters Sagittarius on
November 4, a transition to big themes that are
about to play out in our 'New World Order' in the
coming months. Thankfully, Jupiter is strong in its
own sign to steer us to safer waters.
Mercury re-enters Libra on November 9 due to
its retrograde. Relationships of all kinds will be
tested, casting our minds back to interpersonal and
financial concerns.
Mars enters Libra on November 10, exchanging
signs with Venus in Scorpio until the end of the
month, bringing out hidden dynamics in our
relations. This means that Scorpio is hemmed in by
Saturn on one side and Mars on the other. This will
be more relevant when the Sun enters Scorpio on
November 16 and out of its sign of debilitation. It
moves closer to the part of the zodiac that will
experience big shake ups in the coming years, but
for now we are offered insights behind the scenes if
we are open to the hidden dynamics involved.
Venus enters gandanta (undoing) at the end of
Scorpio on November 20, before entering
Sagittarius on November 21, and joins Jupiter
already settling into its own sign – coming into exact
conjunction with Jupiter on November 24. Jupiter
and Venus’ conjunctions lead to indulgences, while
Sagittarius offers up a moral standpoint born from a
sense of what is not right. Sagittarius can represent
a dogmatic rule of thumb, especially when hosting
Pluto and Saturn.
Mercury stations direct in Libra on November
20, bringing it back into contact with Mars and the
north node. Frustrations are understandable at this
Timeline Astrology 2019 - 31

December
Venus leaves its conjunction with Jupiter and joins
the south node by December 3/4, Saturn on
December 11/12, and then Pluto on December 13.
This means Venus is either conjunct or hemmed in
by the malefic planets in December, leading to less
than cordial environment which will be more
obvious in relation to ethical behaviour - or the lack
thereof.
Venus enters Capricorn on December 15, leaving
what is about to become the most talked about
thing in our life: the sign Sagittarius and what it
represents for us, individually and collectively.
Mercury re-enters Scorpio on December 5,
joining the Sun as they are hemmed in between
Saturn and Mars. ‘Hemmed in’ will be the theme of
December, as we can no longer continue the way
things are but don’t know how to move forward as
yet. Saturn is on one side of the Sun in Sagittarius,
while Mars is on the other in Libra.
The Sun moves out of this hemmed in transit
when it enters Sagittarius on December 16, joining
the south node for an annular solar eclipse on
December 26. This occurs in Mula, the lunar sign
pointing to the center of our galaxy. We are granted
an opportunity to see into the origins of things,
uprooting us in the process of unearthing that which
has been left to fester and rot.
Pluto, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, the Sun and
Moon all placed with the south node in Sagittarius
for the eclipse on December 26. Mercury will have
just moved into Sagittarius on December 25, with
Mars moving into Scorpio, before an intense solar
eclipse grabs the worlds attention.
This is a dramatic end to a dramatic year, as the
eclipse opens a sense of uncertainty into 2020.
The solar eclipse in Mula (root) a 'dreadful' lunar
mansion, placed in Sagittarius is particularly
destructive. With Mercury and Jupiter placed in the
sign for the eclipse, and the south node entering in
January 2020, we will see many things destroyed as
we get to the root of the problem and, more
importantly, remove weak foundations built by
those we look to for guidance. Thankfully, Jupiter is
there, allowing us to be guided by our intuition.
2020
A partial lunar eclipse occurs in Gemini on
January 10, 2020, after which we experience
the conjunction of Pluto and Saturn, and then
Pluto and Jupiter, finishing the year with a
Saturn/Jupiter conjunction. These bring about
changes that affect our world for many decades to
come.
These changes may seem inconceivable at the
time of writing. But then, if I were to tell you how the
world would be in 2018, even just a couple of years
ago, you might have had a problem picturing it!
2020 VISION
The Conjunctions of 2019/2020
By Barry Rosen
The Saturn/Pluto and
Saturn/Ketu (south node)
conjunctions in Sagittarius
have many fearing the future,
as fundamentalists continue
discussing the ‘end times’. We
are heading toward a climax of
these fears in 2019 and 2020.
Saturn/Pluto conjunctions
mark major changes of power, as
they did in 1914 with the fall of
Prussia and the start of World
War 1; and in 1947 with the
reorganization of world
economics.
The plutocracy will be
challenged by rioting of the
‘Saturnine’ masses, revolting
against the elite. Rioting in
France at the time of writing may
be just the beginning.
Saudi Arabia and China seem
particularly vulnerable to massive
change with the conjunctions
occurring in the 12th house of
their charts, while the US is
impacted strongly by a 1st house
conjunction.
Turkey seems particularly
vulnerable, as these occur in the
7th house. With Jupiter moving into
Sagittarius on November 2, 2019,
and transiting over the US
ascendant degree on December 3,
2019, some of the turmoil of late
2019 will be supported in a positive
way for change, along with Saturn’s
ingress into sidereal Capricorn on
January 14, 2020.
Neptune in Aquarius
On May 24, 2017 Neptune began
a new 140 - year cycle as it entered
Purvabhadra Nakshatra (20°
Aquarius to 3 °20’ Pisces). We will
see more of this impact from
March 2018 to February 2025.
Neptune transiting this lunar
mansion is complex; connected to
schemes, inflation, conspiracies,
and grand governmental plans to
make everything bigger in scope.
The last cycle began in 1853 when,
in October of that year, Donald
McKay launched the Great
Republic: the world's biggest sailing
ship, which, at 4,500 tons, was too
large to be successful. It sank!
The recent launch of the world’s
largest plane is a modern
comparison. This cycle can inflate
but, in the end, high hopes
crumble. Uber is putting cabbies
out of business while losing
millions on paper, as are many
other Silicon Valley start-ups.
The new Neptune cycle that
began in 2017 does support the
film industry, raw cotton, medicine,
surgical goods, tobacco, drugs,
chemicals and perfumes. Its transit
points to socialism, so the Bernie
movement will probably come back
strongly again in 2019; also
contributing to political instability.
The dark side of this cycle are
secret societies, as the ‘Deep State’
is emboldened to create more
deception, especially
between March and November
2019, when the inflationary
bubbles will start to deflate.
This will be felt from March until
May 2019 when Saturn is within 3
degrees of Pluto, and then again in
December 2019, climaxing with
the Saturn/Pluto conjunction on
January 12, 2020.
38 - Timeline Astrology 2019

Jupiter/Saturn
The Jupiter/Saturn
conjunction has historically
marked the beginning of
recessionary periods, often
lasting 3 years. In 1979 and
1980, they were conjunct in
Leo, when President Regan was
elected, and tax cuts reduced
inflation, tripling the national
debt and increasing the gap
between the rich and the poor.
In 1960 and 1961, Saturn and
Jupiter were conjunct in
Sagittarius and Capricorn,
leading to President Kennedy
passing a massive tax cut to
bring growth to the next
decade. In 1940 and 1941,
Saturn and Jupiter were
conjunct in Saturn’s sign of
debilitation, Aries, and conjunct
Ketu, leading to the start of
World War 2.
In 2019, Saturn is conjunct
Ketu in its exalted sign;
Sagittarius, where Ketu
supports spirituality and Saturn
is uplifted by Jupiter after
November 2, 2019. So, there is
more likely to be a positive
resolution for the US and the
world. Still, history suggests
that this conjunction has an
impact for 2-3 years on world
economies. Given the state of
world debt, a larger economic
fallout is likely to occur.
Capricorn is a sign connected
to government and
administration. Saturn’s transit
into Capricorn in January 2020
should help world governments
stabilize and reorganize. Still,
Jupiter in Capricorn from
November 2020 into late 2021
will impact judgment. Jupiter in
Capricorn can bring unethical
behavior in business.
It seems that 2019 is the more
difficult year between March and
November, where Ketu conjunct
Saturn will create turmoil in
governments and force many
world leaders to step down from
growing scandals. The agitation
from Saturn/Ketu will stir up more
pubic unrest. Jupiter in Sagittarius
in November 2019 should
temporarily help bring some
stability into 2020 until Jupiter
goes into Capricorn in late
November 2020.
The Jupiter/Saturn conjunction
occurs on December 21, 2020, at
6 degrees of sidereal Capricorn.
This is a challenging transit for
Jupiter as it is just past the lowest
point of a 12-year cycle and is a
low point for Dharma (order). Still,
it is helped by Saturn, which will
be very strong in Capricorn. This
promotes rebuilding
infrastructure.
China, a country whose chart
has Capricorn rising, will benefit
greatly in 2021, while the US must
deal with the 2nd house transit of
Saturn and the financial
reorganization suggested.
The rebellion that started with
Brexit will continue in other EU
countries as these conjunctions
leave those in power unable to
maintain control.
Powerful institutions will go
through major changes. The last
time we had a Saturn/Ketu/Pluto
conjunction in Sagittarius, in 1517,
Martin Luther wrote his powerful
Reformation which began the
unraveling of the Catholic Church
and its power structure. The
growing unrest of the scandals in
the Vatican could have a major
scandal erupt into something
more dramatic starting in 2019.
The banking industry, ruled by
Jupiter, must go through a major
change. Can Saturn bring truth
and uproot corruption? Scandals
around Deutsche Bank and its
inevitable collapse may be one
trigger that starts a deeper
unraveling of the world
economic system. I suspect the
transition will take until 2022-23
when Jupiter, and then Neptune,
move into sidereal Pisces.
JUPITER'S STATION IN 2019
ON THE BRINK
By Gary O'Toole
In 2019, Jupiter stations at 0
degrees of sidereal Sagittarius,
remaining at this degree from
March 29 until April 23. This
section is known as gandanta
(undoing) , representing a gap in
the zodiac between Scorpio and
Sagittarius; as we prepare for the
worst (Scorpio) and hope for the
best (Sagittarius) . As this occurs,
the south node, Ketu joins Pluto
and then Saturn at the other end
of Sagittarius, initiating a
breakdown of order.
The subsequent conjunctions in 2019
and 2020; between Pluto, Saturn, Jupiter,
Mars and Ketu represent the beginning of
a complete overhaul of global structures
in the years that follow. With these
occurring in Sagittarius and Capricorn,
involving the rulers of these signs, we can
expect to see big shake-ups in socialpolitical-economic
structures around the
globe, as a result.
There is much fear about these
conjunctions, with many astrologers
predicting doomsday-type scenarios. And
while we cannot bury our heads in the
sand, we can look at the best of what
these changes eventually bring to our
planet, as we take a leap of faith and
wake up to a new reality.

Photograph Leio McClaren
Ideally, the 2019/2020
conjunctions are experienced as a
period of willing transformation. We
know from history, however, that
change is never brought about on a
global scale with such willingness,
leading to much resistance to what
is inevitable. We are likely to see
governments and the public
rebelling against the necessary
changes.
In 2017, Saturn transited this gap,
as the planet of established order
began to show major cracks in the
system. Its current transit in
Sagittarius challenges our
perception of truth. The beginning
of sidereal Sagittarius is where we
find the lunar mansion, Mula, the
domain of the goddess of
destruction, Niritti; a ‘sharp and
dreadful’ sign; one which has, at the
very least, made us aware of all the
untruths.
This destabilizing juncture
between Scorpio and Sagittarius is
the one of the most difficult
divisions of the zodiac to navigate,
requiring a skilled approach to avoid
the many pitfalls. Planets here
behave as if they have slipped
between the pavement. And while
Saturn represents form and
structure, Jupiter represents order
and expansion, as we build on the
foundations already laid down or, in
many cases, torn apart.
Jupiter’s station is not a time to
lose hope, but to remove all that
stands in the way of it. We must
make sure our foundations are
sound before building and know the
difference between what is real and
unreal.
Interestingly, YouTube was
founded in 2005 when Pluto moved
into sidereal Sagittarius, where
anyone with an opinion and a
webcam can publish their thoughts
on any given subject. Other voices
clamouring for our attention have
obscured our truth.
Jupiter's return to Sagittarius in
2019/2020 will allow us to listen to
the voice within, our intuition,
exposing those who lie or distract us
from what is real.
Closing the Gap
Jupiter transits bring healing to
an area of our lives that has
experienced much fear and grief in
recent years due to Saturn's
transit. This has especially been the
case since the conjunction of
Saturn and Mars in Scorpio in
2016, just as Jupiter joined Rahu
(north node of the Moon) in Leo.
Jupiter’s conjunction with Rahu
showed a lack of judgement and
poor advice, while Saturn and Mars
fuelled a fear-based response.
Jupiter’s station is
not a time to lose
hope but to remove
all that stands in
the way of it
We are likely to try and hold on to
false beliefs that bring comfort
when things seem to come undone.
This is the biggest challenge the
world faces in 2019, and in the
coming years, as we cling to ways of
being that are simply out of date.
Our journey from the fear of loss to
the development of a renewed faith
in something real becomes a very
complicated step when Jupiter
stations at this gap in March/April
of 2019, and the knock-on effect
this will have on any sense of order
and coherence.
Jupiter, the planet of meaningful
purpose, halts between what we
wish to achieve on a material level
on the planet, as it hovers on the
brink of a new spiritual aspiration,
and further into 2020, where the
work of putting these new ideas to
work begins.
Jupiter will return to Sagittarius
on November 4, 2019 until March
29, 2020, after spending much of
2019 in Scorpio, before briefly
entering Capricorn on March 30,
2020; returning for a third time to
Sagittarius on July 1, 2020.
In 2020, Jupiter returns to
Capricorn, from November 20 to
April 5, 2021, re-entering the sign
on September 14, 2021, after a
summer spent in Aquarius.
With Jupiter entering and reentering
Sagittarius and
Capricorn on three occasions in
the coming years - its own sign
and its place of debilitation – we
are likely to see major ups and
downs in relation to our new
vision.
Jupiter’s transit through
Sagittarius is a time connect with
truth in more meaningful ways,
and a period to at least begin to
heal these parts, reaching out
over the chasm that has opened
between 'us and them'.
We are likely to
see major ups
and downs in
relation to our
new vision
This require great courage, so
as not to slip back into fearbased
responses to the
challenges we are now faced
with as a species on the planet.
By 2020, the old social-politicaleconomic
models begin to break
down as Saturn and Pluto enter
sidereal Capricorn, and we
discover new ways to move
forward in the following
decades.
We may struggle with what
emerges initially as powerful
planetary conjunctions recalibrate
systems around the
globe, and we are asked to
respond to these changes
intelligently.
Horoscopes
By Gary O'Toole
How will the conjunctions of 2019 impact your sign?
Aries
Libra
Are you holding on to outworn beliefs? Maybe it's time to take a
refresher course. This will re-invigorate your outlook. Distancing
yourself from those that teach or preach lies may need to be part
of the process.
This is a time to be clear in your communications. Although
speaking aloud your new values might upset those close to
you, everyone will admire you for your courage.
Taurus
Scorpio
Removing debts may require changes on your part. Change is
certainly the only certainty in life. Embrace what you believe is
possible and transform!
Changes in your finances point to what you truly
value and makes you happy. Time to let go of past
hurts and move on.
Gemini
Sagittarius
Changes are taking place in your relationships which can
only strengthen if you are truthful with others. This will
impact how you relate, so make sure you uproot anything
that stands in the way of true intimacy.
Hidden dynamics within your family and siblings allow you to
state who-you-really-are, bringing profound personal change,
which may even mean making some changes to your
appearance.
Cancer
Capricorn
Your heart and health will thank you for acknowledging any
problems with your daily routine. If you've been holding
back, this year is a time to deal with your demons and rid
yourself of the excess baggage.
Friends will need you to communicate with them or you risk
losing those that are a support at this time of retreat. Time to
let go and move on, removing all those deeply-held beliefs
that hinder your progress.
Leo
Aquarius
Who and what brings you a sense of peace? What feeds your
soul? Time to find out! This year leads to changes in your
relationship to your children and those closest to your heart.
Virgo
Get clear about your goals at this point, especially with friends
and associates., as well as older siblings. This may mean
moving on from associating with those who do not share your
values.
Pisces
Changes at home may come in the form of a renovation or
even a house move, allowing you to incorporate your life's
work into your shared, sacred space.
Beliefs can be adapted to fit your current reality, helping
you change how you approach your work; making you
more efficient and clearer in your professional life.
