The Secretary’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to Woodstock
Park.
I hope you all had a great Christmas and I
would like to take this opportunity to thank all of
our fantastic supporters who follow the team
home and away with such passion.
Welcome to the players, officials and supporters
of Herne Bay FC. A welcome also to this
afternoon’s match officials and our mascot today
who is 10 year old Isaac Cork.
We are very pleased to have representatives of
our main sponsors, Quinn Estates, here today.
We hope they enjoy our hospitality and the
game.
Our visitors are local Kent rivals and current
bottom team, Herne Bay. Herne Bay are of
course managed by our ex Under 23 managers,
John Embery and Jermaine Darlington. They
have had a tough start to the season. They
have had to wait till last Saturday to get their
first home win of the season, but what a win!
They defeated Hythe Town who have looked at
least play off contenders . There have been
some big defeats though for Herne Bay which
has given them a very poor goal difference.
There are plenty of ex Brickies in the Herne Bay
squad. Welcome back to them. I hope they enjoy
their return (but not too much).
We should have played VCD Athletic on December
18 th , a fixture that had already been
postponed once. Up until 5:00pm the pitch was
fine but then the rain started and by 6:00 is was
beginning to look in doubt. The match referee
decided (rightly) that with the forecast being
continuous rain through the night it would not
take long for the pitch to be totally unplayable
and called the game off. The VCD management
were unhappy about this and their view was
that we should have called the game off earlier.
Unfortunately, sometimes there really is nothing
that could have been done earlier and this was
one of those occasions. Yes, we knew that rain
was going to come but the pitch was perfectly
playable at 5:00pm when it started. No referee
would have called the match of earlier. We had
a referee look at the pitch around midday just
as a precaution. We knew what he would say
as the pitch was fine. In fact, Roger managed to
roll and spike the pitch. We try again on Tuesday
22 nd January.
After the tremendous win against Sevenoaks
Town we visited Cray Wanderers. Cray were
the one team we have played previously that I
thought deserved their win against us and it
was obviously going to be difficult for us to get
something out of the game. We lost 2-1 but it
was a brave performance against a team
whose playing budget is probably the biggest in
our league and if the figure I have heard bandied
about is correct it is more than double
ours. Our ex forward, Joe Taylor, was playing
for Cray Wanderers after signing for them from
Margate. I would imagine it took a very good
offer indeed to get Joe to go down a level.
At today’s match we are selling our new style
replica shirts. Some have been pre ordered but
any left over will be on general sale. If your size
is not available, they can be ordered. Adult
shirts cost £35.00 and Children’s shirts cost
£30.00. Also, on sale are new style pin badges.
These cost £3.50. Shirts and pin badges are
available from Peter in the PA hut.
Next Saturday we have a really tough fixture at
Hastings United, currently in second position.
The Saturday after (12 th January) we should
have played Thamesmead Town but of course
they have withdrawn from the league and
ceased trading. Our first team may play our Development
team on that day but this is not yet
confirmed so check our web site first to see if
this fixture is going ahead.
Our next home game, as mentioned above, is
on Tuesday January 22nd. The Saturday before
that (19 th January) we visit Ramsgate.
On behalf of the Player management, the Board
of Directors and our committee I would like to
wish all of you a Happy New Year.
From the Programme Editor
Hi everybody and welcome to what will be my
last notes for 2018..I can’t really believe that it
will soon be 2019! It seems not a very long
time ago when I was wearing a silly hat with
2000 written on it!
I hope that you have all had a good and peaceful
Christmas.
I want to thank all of you who buy the match
day programme, it does take several hours of
work to research content, write it and print it,
and although sounding nepotistic (I think that’s
a word!) I
want to
thank my
brother
John, and
sister in law
Sandra for
providing
copy and
proof reading
and
printing
some of the
programme.
I also want
to thank
Faye, Jackie
and Danny
for selling it,
Tony Rickson
for his
brilliant
match reports,
and of
course you for buying it. You may be interested
to know that the electronic copy gets between
300 and 600 hits on the internet.
I have just seen the film “The Bromley Boys”
and it’s well worth watching, not only by football
supporters but also those not interested in
football. Our game on the 15 th December when
we defeated Sevenoaks Town after a long lean
spell brought home to me just how accurate
the Bromley boys’ scenario was (not all of it
mind!) for instance the camaraderie* of many
of you who have been following Sittingbourne
for so many years, some of you far longer than
I have. Its always great for me to talk to you
and share our stories. (* Mutual trust and
friendship among people who spend a lot of
time together!)
It was brilliant of you to spend time in the pouring
rain and howling wind on that Saturday versus
Sevenoaks Town; but we got a great result
at the end, even if my wife thinks I’m mad going
out in those conditions! She did look over
my shoulder when I was writing this and reminded
me that she has ridden her horse in
conditions like that!
I have some new Sittingbourne
FC pin badges
for sale, price is £3.50, so if
you want one then please
come and see me.
Finally I wish you and your
family all the best in the new
year.
Hope all Brickies everywhere have had a really good Christmas break and are looking forward
to really good new year.
I think we were all relieved when we ended our bad run with the win over Sevenoaks and in
the next game we put in a decent shift by all accounts against the league leaders. In those 7
defeats to be fair we were always in 6 of them, the only one of some concern was the Faversham
game where nothing went right at all.
A devoted fan has passed to me Minutes Books for the club or 1901 and 1907. I’m having lots
of fun reading them. I am having them scanned for posterity and will the (reluctantly) hand
them back. With a great old club like ours records must be preserved and far too many records
have been lost in the past, but it is great that some of them are resurfacing again.
If anyone has any records from the clubs past then please loan them to me so that they too
can be scanned.
Welcome to everyone for today’s game with Herne Bay . I am recovering from a hip replacement
and will be on crutches so you won’t all see much of me. I will also be hosting 40 people
connected to our new sponsors in the dining room. Many are coming to see us for the first
time. Hopefully we can do some more building for the future. Let’s hope it’s a good game!
Thanks to all Brickies for another enjoyable year and a very happy new year to you and your
families. Hopefully there are exciting times ahead, watch this space!
Mo
From The Chairman
Notes from the other side of the world
Our Ex keeper Harry Brooks isn't the only Bostik South East player to try his luck at the other
side of the world. Those intrepid Sittingbourne FC supporters who have been following the club
for a long time will be used to reading about ex player Neil Emblem’s escapades on the far side
of the world in New Zealand, however another player to make the headlines recently in New
Zealand is Ross Allen who many of you would have seen play for Guernsey FC against us, and
indeed he scored 3 goals against us. Allen scored 239 goals in 226 games for Guernsey FC
from the club's foundation in 2011 until he left last year.
Allen now plays for Team Wellington. So what’s topical about Allen, well the BBC Sport web site
reports that Bottom of Form “Just over a year ago Ross Allen was being substituted for Guernsey
FC against Shoreham in the eighth tier of English football. Fast forward to Wednesday and
the 31-year-old is three wins away from a possible meeting with Real Madrid, and four victories
from being part of the 'best' team on the planet.” The competition is none other than the FIFA
club World Cup !
Allen moved to New Zealand 12 months ago and joined Team Wellington who play in the New
Zealand equivalent of our Premier League. Their journey in the FIFA Club World Cup started
with a game against Fijian side Lautoka and Team Wellington won that tie 10-3 on aggregate.
They next played United Arab Emirates champions Al Ain in an opening play-off game in Abu
Dhabi. The match went to penalties and although Allen was successful with his penalty the UAE
side won 4-3 in the shoot out. So close yet so far away! Al Ain defeated Tunisian side Esperance
Sportive De Tunis 3-0 in the next round then lost on penalties to River Plate in the semi final.
The final was between Japanese side Kashima Antlers and Real Madrid who went on to win the
competition by 4 goals to 1 with Gareth Bale scoring Real Madrid’s first goal!

Herne Bay — A Brief History
It could be argued that Herne Bay FC had their
most successful season in their 125 th year. Having
been runners up two years running in the
Kent League they secured the League Championship
with games to spare and had a superb
run in the FA Vase becoming only the second
Kent League club to reach the semi-final stage
where they went out to Northern League side
West Auckland Town over the two legs by the
odd goal in seven (4-3.) Herne Bay were formed
in 1886 and began life in the East Kent League,
then having a short period in the Kent League
before winning the East Kent League in four
successive years between 1902 and 1906 returning
to the Kent League as a result.
1953 saw the move to Winch’s Field. Over
1,000 spectators saw their first match at their
new home; a 2 - 2 draw against Tunbridge
Wells Reserves in Kent League Division 2.
Within two years they lifted the Division 2 title,
winning promotion to Division 1. In the 1957/58
season the club won The Kent Amateur Cup
beating Bromley 2 - 0 in the final. The following
season saw the Kent League fold and a move
to the Aetolian League followed. The 1964/65
season saw another move to Division 2 of the
Athenian League, where they enjoyed several
successful seasons followed by promotion to
Division 1 on winning Division 2 in 1970/71. A
good run in the FA Cup saw the Bay reach the
4th qualifying round, where they lost to the then
‘mighty’ Margate in front of a record home attendance
of 2,303.
At the start of the 1974/75 campaign the Club
returned to the Kent League, and in the 1978/79
season they had good runs in the Cup competitions;
defeating Welling United in the Kent Senior
Trophy and losing to Sheppey United in the
Kent League Cup. The nineties saw the Club
become the most successful and consistent
side in the Kent League, winning four Kent
League titles. The 1996/97 season was without
equal in the history of the Kent League. Within
the space of four weeks the Club won the Kent
Senior Trophy, The Kent League Division 1 Cup
and The Kent League Championship. A unique
treble!
A complete change of management and playing
staff took place after the 1997-98 season, with
manager Tommy Sampson leaving the Club to
take over the reins at Deal Town taking the majority
of the established first team players with
him. That Deal Town side became the first Kent
League club to win the FA Vase at Wembley in
the last ever Vase Final staged at the old stadium
in May 2000. The team had a fantastic
2000/01 season finishing runners-up in the
Premier Division, scored 93 goals in the league.
Nick Denly (father of England cricketer Joe
Denly) received an unprecedented three manager
of the month awards in his first full season
at the helm.
However the 2001/02 season proved to be one
of great disappointment. Exiting all cup competitions
at the first round stage and finishing a poor
7 th position in the league, despite being one of
the few teams to defeat league and cup double
winners, Maidstone. A major grant was awarded
to provide new perimeter fencing and refurbishment
of the changing facilities and these
works were complete prior to the start of the
2003/04 season when the club celebrated 50
years at Winch’s Field. Former Gillingham and
Maidstone player, Jason Lillis took over the
reins for the 2004/05 season which proved to be
very successful as Bay finished runners up in
both the League and League Cup, losing out to
Ramsgate in both competitions.
Both the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons proved
to be very disappointing and with several senior
players, and Jason, leaving the Club during the
2007/08 season, the Club built on the success
of Herne Bay Youth with the introduction of a
number of very good young players into the first
team squad. This proved very beneficial and
these players formed the basis of the first team
squad for this 2008/09 season. Along with some
very influential experienced players introduced
by new manager, Barry Morgan, the Club had
high hopes for a successful 2008/09 campaign.
Unfortunately a run of five defeats in six matches
in October severely dented any promotion
prospects. Despite a twelve match winning sequence
Bay fell just short at the end of the campaign
and a defeat in the final match saw them
finish in 6th position in the League. The majority
of the young squad were retained for the
2009/10 season and with new sponsors there
was a renewed optimism within the Club.
Sittingbourne FC Appearances
Herne Bay — A Brief History—Cont
With the appointment of Simon Halsey as Manager, Herne Bay FC pushed on to finish runners
up in the Kent League Premier Division two seasons running, the second of those going down
to the last few minutes of the last match where a goal at Tunbridge Wells gave Hythe Town the
title. But, in season 2011/12 Herne Bay swept all before them, narrowly missing out on a Wembley
appearance in the FA Vase and capturing the Kent League Premier Division title and promotion
to the Ryman League.
The 2013/14 season saw another new start for the Bay with Sam Denly (son of former manager
Nick Denly) taking up the managerial reigns following a disappointing first season in the Ryman
League where immediate relegation back to Step 5 was narrowly avoided. Achieved highest
ever finish and points total in the 2014/15 campaign in Herne Bay ‘s third season at this level.
The 2015/16 season Bay faired even better, sitting in the play-off position for most of the
season and with a number of poor results in March Bay finally finished 8th, surpassing their
highest finish in the Isthmian league achieved in the previous season.
Retaining all the players for the 2016/17 season Bay expected to achieve a better position, but
a number of poor results in the early part of season set the tone for the rest of the campaign.
Bay hovered around relegation zone until late January. The player's budget was cut and immediately
there was an improvement in results. A ten match unbeaten run saw Bay climb away
from the relegation zone with an eventual finish in 17th place. Sam Denly resigned at the end of
the season and all of the players left the club. New managers, professional players, John Embery
and Jermaine Darlington, were appointed and they have built a totally new side comprising,
a large number of very talent young players, along with some experienced older players.
This is the second time in the last 17 years that a totally new side has been formed and to blood
these youngsters into what always proves to be a very competitive level of football. the club
were delighted with a mid table finish in 12th place.
A couple of players have moved on but with new signings Matt Fry, James White, Nick Reeves
and Connor Pring Embery is looking for a higher finish this season, maybe with a shot at
reaching the play-offs.

Firstly I would like to say thank you to the supporters, who are without a doubt the best football
fans any club could ask for. Loyal, loud and looney.... and I'm not just talking about Nutter! Seriously
though, the commitment and energy the fans bring to each and every game is unparalleled
and you really are our twelfth man. Sittingbourne FC is moving in a great direction due to all of
the behind the scenes efforts that have taken place throughout my time here especially with the
recent news of Quinn Estates becoming a major sponsor of the club which will inevitably fulfil the
vision and ambition of everyone involved within Sittingbourne FC.
This year has been fantastic for me as I took the step into management in January 2018 previously
being the first team coach, it took a while before we played our first game which wasn't the
ideal start anyone was looking for but it did provide time to steady the ship. Once we had brought
in Ian Varley as assistant manager as well as a few players returning into the team or fresh new
faces joining, we really kicked on and ended the 2017/18 season with a bang; most notably beating
eventual League Champions Carshalton Athletic FC and Hastings Utd. It was unfortunate the
season ended when it did because I truly felt that with our momentum, energy and form we could
have done anything. The biggest challenge of pre-season for the current campaign was to try
and recreate this form and atmosphere from the start. I wanted to instil a clear vision and philosophy
for the club which would give Sittingbourne FC a more professional environment with the
hope of getting great results whilst putting a strong foundation to build upon in place. A few of the
things that have been implemented include a strength and conditioning coach, an analyst who
records all matches for statistics,
individual/team highlights
and for review, a
change in nutrition for both
pre-match and post-match
as well as other areas. This
is all to make sure we are in
the best position possible to
succeed. We have been
very fortunate with the personnel
that have joined the
club including Mark Wheeler
(Physio), Alix Davis (Physio),
Alex Biggs (Analyst) and Nathan
Elder (Player/Coach)
who have all improved us
immensely and bought into
the culture of the Sittingbourne
FC family.
Going forwards we are truly in a great spot with a lot to look forward to. All the members of the
board are hard at work making sure the club keeps going season after season, taking baby steps
forwards and, every so often, a jump. With exciting prospects on and off the pitch we can all get
behind Sittingbourne FC and really push on this season with a young, hungry, and energetic
team prepared to give everything against anyone. I will continue to work as hard and as passionately
as I can to propel this wonderful historic club forwards for the local fans and community.
That is a promise.
Special thanks to the players and coaching team, Maurice Dunk, John Pitts, Chris Daisy as well
as all of the board and committee members, Lee Kempton, the volunteers around the club who
are fantastic, the development and youth teams and last but not the least the fans! Hope you
have had a great Christmas and Happy Holidays. Onto to 2019!
Aslan
FOOTBALL is a game to be enjoyed but there
are times when you really end up questioning
what it’s all about.
The £5m golden handshake being given by the
Premier League clubs to outgoing chief executive
Richard Scudamore was one of those moments.
It also brings home what the lower levels of football
in this country is up against when cash of
that amount is handed out at the drop of the hat.
Yes, the Premier League does give money down
to Non-League football and without it many clubs
wouldn’t have been able to improve their facilities.
But imagine how much more could be
achieved and the good it could do for English
football.
Part of the problem is the disconnect between the
top and the bottom. Non-League football couldn’t
seem any further away from the riches enjoyed at
the elite level.
But, more crucially, the top clubs just don’t appear
to give a hoot. And that’s what this payment
to Scudamore says.
Personally, no problem with players being wellpaid.
They are in an entertainment industry, pulling
in the pound notes and they deserve to get
their slice in what is a short career.
I also don’t ever buy the argument that a player
should simply hand over some of his wages just
because a club has overspent and hasn’t paid
their debts. That’s on them, not Alexis Sanchez,
for example.
It’s just tough to swallow a sizable hand-out when
so many clubs are doing it the right way but still
having to beg, borrow and steal to get by.
When the news broke I had a rare rant in my NLP
column because I feel it’s an insult to all those
who put in the hard work throughout the season
at our levels.
It was from the heart. Let’s hope the Premier
League show they have one too in 2019 and restore
some lost faith.
WREXHAM fans are understandably upset about
manager Sam Ricketts leaving to take over at
League One side Shrewsbury.
The former Bolton and Hull City defender only
took over in the summer but quickly showed he’s
a boss with a bright future as he led the Welsh
club to the top of the National League.
But look at the bigger picture and it will hopefully
be a boost to Non-League football if he can do
well.
Managers at this level rarely get a chance to step
up. Opportunities are much more available to
players. There are so many top bosses outside
the Football League – it would be great if more
get a shot higher up the ladder.
DID you catch the amazing goal-line defending
by Dulwich Hamlet last weekend? Wingate &
Finchley couldn’t believe they hadn’t scored from
a goalmouth scramble in their FA Trophy tie.
Hamlet keeper Preston Edwards and some incredible
desire from Ibrahim Kargbo kept the ball
out as the Wingate peppered their goal – Kargbo
finally throwing his head at the feet of an attacker
to finally get the ball clear.
The clip quickly racked up the viewing figures to
well over two million. It shows the power of social
media. Hopefully it might even lead to some new
fans turning up at their local club over the coming
weeks. It’s the sort of commitment to defending
we can all appreciate.
THE FESTIVE season is here and that can only
mean one thing – football!
Don’t forget The NLP will still be in your shops
every Sunday and still for just £1.50.
The paper is fast-approaching its 1,000 th issue.
Drop us a line if you there’s anything you’d like to
see us mark the occasion with when we hit the
milestone! n
Christmas day 1957
I thought that you might be interested to see that Sittingbourne FC played Gillingham Reserves
on Christmas day 1957!! We lost 3-1.

Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 8th December 2018
Bostik South East
Faversham Town 3 Sittingbourne 1 Att 296
Sittingbourne’s amazing collapse from second in
the table to third bottom continued as Faversham
Town got their revenge for a home defeat in the
FA Trophy in October.
In fact, that day was the last time Sittingbourne
won a match and this was their seventh defeat in
a row.
Having said that, Faversham had only won once
in 12 games going into this match so it would
have been little surprise if both sides had been
lacking confidence.
As it was, Faversham deservedly ran out winners.
They had less of the ball but defended stoutly,
played with a lot of passion and commitment, and
accepted the gifts that Sittingbourne’s defence
laid on for them.
At least Sittingbourne showed good attitude by
carrying on battling even when they went three
down, but apart from that it was a derby afternoon
to forget for them.
And to make things worse, they had another player
sent off – that’s five red cards this season, and
three in the last five games.
Manager Aslan Odev is not afraid to make changes
and five players came into the team that lost
the previous match, a fortnight ago at East Grinstead.
Back came goalkeeper Patrick Lee, fitagain
Ben Fitchett and suspension-free Reiss
Crimmen, in came Gil Carvalho for his first full
game after returning to the club, and into midfield
came Gillingham youngster Henry Woods on
loan. That meant Ira Jackson and Bola Dawodu
were among those left out, though both came on
as second half substitutes.
It was – unsurprisingly – a tentative start to the
game, with the first chance created by a 13th minute
long throw from Lewis Chambers which
Tommie Fagg headed just wide.
Two minutes later and Faversham were in front
thanks to a huge stroke of luck. Ben Fitchett fell
over, completely losing his footing on the wet surface,
and Miller had a clear run on goal behind
him, easily chipping over the advancing Lee.
Up front, David Smith was getting very little
change out of experienced ex-Sittingbourne stalwart
Matt Bourne, and the wing threats of Carvalho
and Tom Loynes were being snuffed out.
Woods had an accomplished first half in midfield,
never wasting the ball, but Sittingbourne were
generally a little subdued, though still well in the
game at this point.
It got much harder for them just before half-time
when Crimmen’s headed clearance fell handily
for Carrington on the edge of the area and he had
time to pick his spot and make it 2-0.
Encouragingly, Sittingbourne started the second
half more positively and with the wind and driving
rain behind them, they dominated possession -
but the great majority of their many free-kicks,
long throws and corners were won by Faversham
defenders.
Carvalho did get the ball in but was ruled offside,
Fagg was just wide from Woods’ corner, and as
Sittingbourne continued to press, Faversham
were happy to lump it clear and attack on the
break.
And that’s just how they went further ahead on 57
minutes when a right-wing cross was allowed to
reach Goodger on the far side and he wasn’t
closed down quickly enough as he scored comfortably.
Sittingbourne responded immediately with an extraordinary
goal by captain Chris Webber. He
took a free-kick just inside the opposition half and
out wide, probably 50 yards away, and it simply
sailed straight into goal at the far top corner.
Webber got a super goal from distance in defeat
at Ashford last season so it’s a shame his dramatic
interventions don’t get more credit as they
get a bit ignored in the disappointment of defeat.
Getting back to just a goal behind would have
been an enormous boost for Sittingbourne’s rally,
but Jackson had a shot saved well and then fired
in two excellent corners that just didn’t find anyone
applying the finishing touch.
Faversham were determined to hold on by hook
or by crook and any hope Sittingbourne had of
getting something from the game probably ended
with the 87th minute dismissal of sub Adebayo.
He tangled briefly with Bourne, but when another
Faversham defender provocatively got involved,
Adebayo shoved him away and was sent off. Sittingbourne
fans voiced their disapproval at a red
card for the Sittingbourne man and just a yellow
for Faversham’s Huckle but to be fair it looked the
right decision.
Old rivals Faversham did the double over Sittingbourne
in the league last season and though
they look a team in a bit of transition at the moment,
they’re now halfway to doing the same
again this time.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Chris Webber, Reiss
Crimmen, Lewis Chambers (Yellow card), Lex
Allan, Ben Fitchett, Gil Carvalho (Bola Dawodu,
70 min), Henry Woods, David Smith (Ira Jackson,
54 min), Tommie Fagg, Tom Loynes (Izzy
Adebayo, 67 min, Red card). Subs not used: Dylan
Riches, Nathan Elder.

Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 12th December 2018
Bostik South East
Sittingbourne 4 Sevenoaks Town 1 Att 77
Sittingbourne picked the worst day of the year
for weather to produce their best win since early
January.
Going into the match on the back of seven
successive defeats, they simply swept aside
Kent rivals Sevenoaks, thumping them 4-1.
Everything they got wrong in the desperately
disappointing defeat by Faversham a week
earlier, they got gloriously right here. They won
their defensive headers, they won their midfield
battles, and they competed and ran themselves
into the ground all over the pitch. And
most of all, they took their goal chances in
style.
So what turned it round so dramatically? Well,
going a goal up in the second minute was a
huge confidence boost. And making it 2-0 after
just six minutes must have given them the extra
belief that this was going to be their day. As
long as they did nothing silly.
And they didn’t. As the rain poured down and
the wind swirled around, all in bitter plus-one
temperatures, they kept going for the whole 90
minutes, and even found the energy to grab a
bonus fourth goal in injury time at the end of
the match.
What a shame only about half their normal
crowd were there to see it, though who could
blame anyone for staying indoors on an afternoon
as miserable as this.
Sittingbourne made two changes from the
team that lost at Faversham.
Gillingham youngster Danny Devine came in at
right-back with captain Chris Webber switching
to the other side in place of Reiss Crimmen,
who has left the club. And in midfield Dan Parkinson
showed how much he’s been missed
during a three-match suspension, returning in
place of youngster Henry Woods.
What a start Sittingbourne made, and all because
of the opportunism and skill of Tom
Loynes. With just a minute played, goalkeeper
Patrick Lee hit a long free-kick for offside and
David Smith won his header to flick it on.
Loynes was the quickest to react and raced
past his covering defender to chest the ball
down and half-volley into the far corner from
the edge of the area. That puts him top of the
club’s scoring list for this season.
Sittingbourne celebrated vigorously and doubled
their lead just a few minutes later when
Ben Fitchett perfectly met Parkinson’s corner
to head powerfully home for his first goal since
his debut game in September.
Rattled Sevenoaks complained bitterly on 15
minutes when Smith collided with keeper Ben
Bridle-Card, but the Sittingbourne striker was
clearly
100 per cent concentrating on the ball coming
in and his booking was harsh in the extreme.
Mind you, his heart must have been in his
mouth a few minutes later when Sevenoaks
accused him of using an elbow, but the referee
calmed the situation.
Sevenoaks strived to get back into it after their
nightmare start but so many of their long balls
forward zipped straight through to Lee, and after
40 minutes they conceded again. Parkinson
hit a beautiful ball forward for Smith to run onto,
and he dodged past one defender before
smoothly finishing past the advancing keeper
– a deserved first goal since coming back to
the club on loan from Dover.
As expected, Sevenoaks were all hustle and
bustle for the start of the second half and experienced
striker Sawyer hit the bar, but Sittingbourne
were creating chances on the counter-attack
and sub Bola Dawodu had a shot
cleared off the line.
Sittingbourne’s young defence held out with
great determination and solidity and it wasn’t
until the 87th minute that Sevenoaks won a
header from a corner and the second ball was
deflected past the frustrated Lee.
Still Sittingbourne weren’t finished and put the
icing on the cake in injury time. Tommy Fagg -
what a signing he’s been this season – burst
forward from midfield and when his shot was
half-blocked Gil Carvalho stroked the loose
ball into the net. That, too, was his first goal
since returning to the club.
Funny the way it suddenly seems so easy to
win when everyone puts in a shift and a half,
and plays with belief, determination and trust in
each other. From low to high in a week; funny
old game, football.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Danny Devine,
Chris Webber, Lewis Chambers, Lex Allan,
Ben Fitchett, Gil Carvalho, Dan Parkinson
(Henry Woods, 73 min), David Smith (Yellow
card) (Bola Dawodu, 52 min), Tommie Fagg
(Yellow card), Tom Loynes (Chmdi Otuadinma,
59 min). Subs not used: Rob Lofting, Nathan
Elder.
