Rapsody is a tour de force in hip hop, blazing the
trail for a new generation of emcees, showcasing
effortless lyrical mastery in celebrating the culture
of a hip hop. But this Grammy Award nominee
represents much more than just the female
side of hip hop culture; she is an emcee who represents
hip hop culture beyond the lines of gender,
proving that anything the boys can do, she
can do too, and better. Her virtuosity and dexterity
behind the microphone highlight her presentation,
and her humble demeanor attests to her
constant pursuit of improvement with every beat
and rhyme. I was thrilled to have the opportunity
to interview her during her very busy schedule.
Modesty aside, how would you describe yourself?
A lyrical alien, tomboy feminine black woman
with a lot of soul and machine gun funk.
Today, as well as named one of the 20 Greatest
Female Rappers of All Time by XXL. How do
you reflect on those honors, as well as others?
Well, I can’t say that I’m the only woman ever
nominated for Best Rap Album in the Grammys,
but I am one of 5 (now 6 if we included Cardi B’s
most recent nomination). It’s gratifying to work
so hard and be acknowledged for years and years
of practice, growth, talent, art. I appreciate those
flowers as reminders that I’m enough as I am,
and my flowers to the world through my music
are received and noticed. However, it also pushes
me to keep growing and do more. I don’t want to
just be boxed in as one of the greatest women to
do anything; I wanted to be one of the greatest
across all boxes. I want to help open and widen
doors for the girls/women coming behind me in
the same way so many women have done before
me. One of my mantras has always been “anything
the boys can do, we can do just as well if
not better than”.
Along with many other accolades, your music
is sometimes described to have intricate rhyme
patterns, metaphors, and wordplay. Does texturing
and layering music come naturally to
you or do you have a particular process?
You are the only woman ever nominated for a
Grammy Award in the Best Rap Album category.
You were named one of the top female artists

HIV Remembered tribute
This magazine was initially started by
Mike Luke to provide his gay lover dying
of AIDS a job, commensurate with his
limited mobility and disability of the HIV
epidemic. The lover died before he could
take control. During the next few years, the
faces of those that succumbed to HIV were
remembered and celebrated on our covers.
Many of us continued to weep daily over
the loss of our loved ones with HIV, it is
not easy to keep such sadness, but it is
more necessary to remain alive for them.
We must fight this with our last breath.
I was bruised and battered, I couldn't tell
what I felt.
I was unrecognizable to myself.
Saw my reflection in a window and didn't
know my own face.

died of HIV/AIDS in the U.S. since the
beginning of the HIV epidemic
More than 1.1 million people in the U.S.
are living with HIV today, and 1 in 7 of
them don’t know it.
There were approximately 36.9 million
people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS
in 2017.
AIDS-related deaths have been reduced
by more than 51% since the peak in 2004.
In 2017, 940 000 people died from AIDSrelated
illnesses worldwide, compared
to 1.4 million in 2010 and 1.9 million in
2004.
Young people were the most likely to
be unaware of their infection. Among
people aged 13-24 with HIV, an estimated
51% didn’t know.

forms. The three basic type of figures you'll
come across at conventions will most likely
be pre-painted figures, articulated figures,
and model kits.

FIRST OPENLY GAY MAYOR OF

Pettis outlined many great plans for his
community during his inauguration on Dec.
10. This seems like a big first step to move
Cathedral City forward as a progressive all
inclusive city of the future, 1,000 new trees
to be planted and I hope some of those are
fruit trees, wait I mean to say fruit trees
deliver food year around. Mayor Pro Tem
Gregory S. Pettis also developed the idea of
a ban on plastic straws in study session and
has been implemented to the betterment
of our planet and as a notice, the city is a
true citizen of the world. Hopefully after,
fine cities will take the hint. In my honest
opinion, Human Rights are world wide

that reference is still relevant.

Palm Springs for electing the nation’s
first all-LGBT city council. Elected in
2017, Palm Springs’ council now includes
Mayor Robert Moon, Mayor Pro Tem
J.R. Roberts, and Council members Geoff
Kors, Lisa Middleton and Christy Holstege
respectively. This will be the happiest gay
year in Palm Spring! I cannot wait to see
what Pride has in store this year! Many

Qualified veterans and their spouses

guaranteed job interviews during the hiring
process, under provisions of a revitalized
veteran employment preference program
approved. The Riverside County Board
of Supervisors voted unanimously, 5-0, to

Cathedral City City Council has also
become more diverse to match Palm

"Go Fund Who?"
Now I've seen many stories going around and I
ain't one to judge but... In the world we live in
and the decisions we choose to make and the
things we love to do, can cost.
I've invested so much into my drag, but I love
what I do and I make sure I can support it. Yes,
times can be rough but at the end of the day, I
make the choices. Some of the stories I come
across on social media can be heartbreaking and
bring me to tears, but others make me sick.
I've read stories about queens wanting to enter
pageants but can't afford to or "Lost my expensive
phone now need a new one" or even "Need some
extra cash cause they cut my hours at work". To
me, I say "No ma'am, absolutely not, if you can't
afford things like this". Don't do it, don't buy it.
Now if your hours are cut from work, you need
to find a different job and start making your coin.
I don't feel the need to have everybody pitch in
on a gown and some jewels because I can't afford
them. Go another route. Go to a Goodwill, buy
some stuff, and bring it back to live. Stop asking
everyone for handouts.
I recall reading about a girl who likes to be shady
with everyone and starts drama in every corner,
but the day she entered a pageant, she couldn't
afford it. So She made a GoFundMe for herself. I
was took back .
I thought to myself "This person is so poisonous
and toxic to everybody, but now she needs our
help that's when I put my foot down and donated
nothing. Sorry not sorry.
I know that there is a lot of things that I love and
that I want and I can't afford, so I become creative
and remake what I love and make it work and
make it even better than what I originally saw.
People need to stop taking advantage of other
locals. Just because you entertain here, doesn't
mean you're owed anything.
Work hard, be kind, be a role model and maybe
others will think of jumping in and helping out.
My advice to all divas is to stay on top of your
game and come correctly and be fierce and
stay away from all drama in any form or shape.
Be kind and stay humble and don't ever feel
intimidated by anyone. If you can't afford to be
in a pageant or can't afford something you really
want, wait for it because when you work hard, it
pays off and it feels good to be able to say "I got
this by myself ".
I can truly say I'm grateful for all opportunities
given to me by all hosts. I don't take anything for
granted but I love what I do and I make sure you
feel the same way about it when I'm on stage. I
will give you body, mug, costume, nails, etc. Just
to keep you looking.

The power of art has been unleashed
during 2028 to protest and help inform
and prevent the Trump tyrannical
agenda. A few of the performing artists
protesting Trump included some who
were being honored at the Kennedy
Center. Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator
and star of the Broadway political
historical musical, Hamilton has been
an ardent critic of Trump, along with
Reba McEntire, Cher, and Wayne
Shorter among others have been
actively critical of the Trump agenda
and the damage it has done and the
potential for lasting damage to the
democracy of the United States.
The Trumps of course are invited to the
celebration to honor artists however,
they declined this year following vocal
criticism from several of the
honorees. Cher compared Trump
to Hitler, Lin-Manuel Miranda
said, Trump was "going straight
to hell". and Reba McEntire, who
attempts to keep politics out of her
performing said she was planning
to attend even though the Trumps
were not.

of Protest Songs", said in a recent
interview said that, "Trump was so

to Kendrick Lamar as a protest artist
who in his album titled, "Damn"
attempts to show the numerous Trump
hate rants without granting Trump
the notoriety. The album brings
attention to race, violence, gender
relations,LGBTQ issues, and a variety
of other topics without referring to
Trump directly but implicating him
specifically This is just one of many
individual protest songs and albums of
a variety of musical performers.

to protest Trump. The continuing praise
and defense of Putin by Trump has
also been the topic of many paintings,
murals, etc The mural painter Michael
Ortiz planned a painting of Trump
and Putin kissing. He did not want to
associate this them implying that they
are gay, to insult the legitimacy of gay
love. Instead he added a bubble above
the two politicians, inside the bubble
was a likeness of Pamela Anderson,
indicating the two were thinking about
her during the kiss. Another sculpture
representing Trumps fowl language
depicts his face as a urinal titled "Potty
Mouth." these examples are in this
article to illustrate the creativity of
visual artists in influencing the politics
of destruction and how they are
enlightening this destruction through
creativity.
Moving into a new year, artists
will continue to resist the Trump
agenda to illuminate the destruction
his administration is creating. All
of us need to participate in this

Local Pride and LGBT festivals under the
management of Ron DeHart are getting
bigger and better and more inclusive and
less commercial. Proving again that the
community will come together to ally with
the LGBT community. Also this year, we
saw a second Pride event, putting Desert
Hot Springs on the map. Remember, local
prides are hugely important to the local
residents heath and wellbeing.
Drag shows and drag brunches have risen
dramatically this year as we all show a
positive vibe our eclectic culture provides.
With ART, HIV-positive people can
continue to live full, healthy lives. Access
to this life-saving medication creates nearnormal
life expectancy. That’s great news
for people who have access to ART, but
this isn’t the case for everyone. Last year,
almost a million people died from AIDSrelated
causes. That’s 2,500 people every
day, nearly two every minute. This means
President Trump signed into law H.R.
2, the Agriculture and Nutrition Act,
otherwise known as the 2018 Farm
Bill, which changed critical agricultural
conservation programs to make the Salton
Sea eligible for millions in new federal

was intrigued at an early age with the power
of words; and all the ways you could use the
words in Hip Hop. When listening to my
favorite artist growing up it was amazing the
ideas they were able to convey in just two bars
of a song. By setting up the words, and using
metaphors you could put some of the densest
thoughts into ten lines. That’s genius. I looked
at it like a puzzle. I’m a huge fan of thriller
movies that have twist and set you up for
the big “AH HA” moment that you didn’t see
coming. The twist. That’s the kind of lyricism
I have always loved. The set up. Connecting
words 4 bars from the last time you said it. I
feel in love with that creativity. Learning how
to be complex and simple at the same time. To
say things like no one else would think to say
them.
Both rap and hip hop are used when describing
your work. Do you have a preference?
Why or why not?
Hip Hop is a culture. That’s something I live.
Rap is something I do within Hip Hop. It’s an
element of the culture.
How do you adjust to the fast-changing realities
of the music industry and how business
is conducted?
I came in prepared because I was groomed and
educated by both 9th Wonder and Young Guru
on the business. So, most of the time I knew
what to expect or how to react to different situations.
They told me what to look for, what
to watch out for, the things to do to keep my
sanity, they gave me all the tools I need for the
good fight. To run the marathon.
know what you want out of the business, and
define what success means to you it’s easier to
navigate. That’s not to say it easy, but easier to
work towards what it is you’re trying to accomplish.
And not being afraid to say “no” or walk
away from money.
The business is very political. The best thing I
did was start indie to learn the ins and outs on
a smaller scale of having a hand in all moving
parts of my art. And understanding at the end
of the day, I am the captain of my own ship.
Patience and communication is everything.
What advice do you have for young women
rappers starting out their career?
There’s so much I would tell them. First
and foremost, that they are enough. They
don’t have to be copycat versions of anyone
else. There unique self and light is bright
enough. So, to always remain true to self and
mostly importantly aligned themselves with
people you believe in THEM, their vision, and
their art.
If you start out trying to follow a trend, you
will be chasing trends forever and eventually
burn out. You can be better version of anyone
else. You can always be the best version of
yourself ever. So, do something that can be recreate
because it’s exclusive to you.
To never let anyone box them in because of
their gender. Our gender is a power we possess
but it is not all of who we are. We are limitless
in what we can do, create, and become. So,
embrace your womanhood however that looks
to you but measure you’re potential and greatness
across the board; demand that respect.
So, having that as a foundation and taking
emotion out of anything it hasn’t been a What does your average day look like?

all working on, then I usually start working on
new music, run errands, hit the gym, etc.
Then I’m at our home base, Bright Lady
Studios, by around 4pm. The rest of the evening
is spent in the studio until the wee hours
of the morning, or sometimes I spend the
night, or I’ll go home around midnight and
work from home. I have a studio to work at
my residence.
That’s a normal Rapsody day. If I’m not working
on my own project, we are all working one
of our other artist’s projects and making sure
recording, marketing ideas, branding etc taken
are care of. And, I may make time to throw a
spades game in every now and again.
What’s new on your play list?
Our new JAMLA IS THE SQUAD 2 album is
different on my playlist, mixed with a bunch
of new artist and new released I’m in love
with. Leikeli 47’s new album ACRYLIC is a
favorite of the year. She has a song titled “Top
Down” that I run several times a day. My
RocNation labelmate Nicole Bus released a
new single titled ‘YOU” that is a jam! Amazing
record. I’m also diggin’ on TDE’s Reason’s new
project and JID’s Strawberry song from his
latest project is dope. Mereba has a song called
BLACK TRUCK that gets heavy fun on my
drives. As well as a new singer 9th put me by
the name of Mac Ayres. His SOMETHING TO
FEEL album is crazy. And, I’m still listening
to Sir’s November. Meek Mill’s CHAMPIONS
project is dope and we all are still blown by the
Jay-Z verse on FREE. As you can see, I’m into a
lot of R&B this year.

amazing organization created by Beverly Bond
that educates, empowers, and celebrates our
girls.
The youth, boys and girls, are our future and
it’s important to expose them to limitless possibilities
so they know their worth, that they
matter, are prepared for the world, and can do
anything they dream.
Which living person(s) do you most admire?
I have to start with my foundation, and that’s
my mother and father. I’ve learned so much
from them about womanhood, sisterhood,
work ethic, and family. They were my first
examples of strength, power and love.
Then there are women like Phylicia Rashad,
Cicley Tyson, Nikki Giovanni, Queen Latifah,
Lauryn Hill and MC Lyte that I look up
to. Phylicia and Cicley taught me, outside of
my women in my family, how to be classy,
regal, carry myself with respect, be gracious,
poetic and strong. They were POWERFUL
examples of the light I wanted to walk in and
being a strong black woman. They were real
Queens, in the same way my mother and aunts
were.
Nikki Giovanni showed me how to portray in
written form. How to use my voice through
words. Latifah, Lauryn and Lyte taught me
what that looked like in Hip Hop. How to
shine through all the masculinity and be a
undeniable force.
