THE HEART
OF CUSCO
To stroll through Cusco’s historic centre is to inevitably come
to appreciate the symbiosis between the Inca and the Colonial.
Impressive stone walls flank two-story houses with wooden
balconies, temples are built upon temples, and plazas stand
where Inca structures once did.
Belmond Palacio Nazarenas
The Belmond Palacio Nazarenas Hotel is another beautiful
example of this fascinating mix. What was once an Inca building
was then taken over by the Spanish in the 1500s and turned
into a house. This house later became a Jesuit school, only
to become a house again, before finally transforming into a
sanctorum. This secular essence is still evident in many parts
of the construction that remain today, which include the
ancient fountain in the cloisters patio, the painted ceilings, and
the stone archways that were built by the Inca and served as
entryways into important rooms.
The hotel features 55 oxygen-enriched rooms with personal
butler services. Its private library exhibits books that belonged
to the residents of the sanctorum, and its restored chapel
displays artworks from the period. If you are looking to relax,
take a walk through the lovely interior gardens, dive into Cusco’s
first heated outdoor pool, or indulge in a luxurious treatment
with organic products at the hotel’s spa, which boasts a glass
floor that showcases a splendid original Inca wall below.
The hotel offers cooking classes with the resident chef, a visit to
the San Pedro Market to discover local ingredients, shopping
trips to nearby stores, tours of the bohemian San Blas
neighbourhood, and much more.
