Peru On Wheels
Peru On Wheels
A bit over two hours north of Lima lies the ancient city of Caral,
a wondrous place deserving of its UNESCO World Heritage Site
title. This city was the most important for a civilisation that
inhabited the coastal deserts of Peru over 5,000 years ago,
making it the oldest city in the Americas.
On par with China, Egypt, India, and Mesopotamia, parts of
Peru were also thriving all these years ago, boasting incredible
constructions made with local natural materials – like stone and
wood. Despite the passing of time, the city remains perfectly
preserved, and its pyramids can be truly appreciated with the
stark desert and blue skies as a background.
The desert is synonymous with dunes, and dunes are
synonymous with adventure. In our attempt to put a spin on
the typical visit to this extraordinary archaeological site, we
integrated a pinch of adrenaline into our tour, inviting guests
to partake in a wild ride through the sand on a 4x4 truck. An
experienced driver will take you up and down the dunes as you
delve into Lima’s adventurous side.
Take advantage of a free afternoon and indulge in the
commodities offered by the lodge where you will be spending
the night. Relax by the pool, learn more about Peru in the
comfortable reading room, or take in a gorgeous sunset over
the Supe River Valley from any of the lovely common areas.
The next morning, make your way to Caral. As you wander
through the site, discover this fascinating culture. Expert
astronomers, impressive builders, and incredible engineers,
the people of Caral build irrigation systems that allowed them
to survive the hostile desert environment. Walk amongst the
pyramids, appreciate the plazas, and learn more about how the
oldest Peruvian civilisation developed almost autonomously in
this previously isolated part of the country, before making your
way back into the XXI Century.
