LARCO MUSEUM
History, archaeology and culture
3 hours AM | PM Upon request
Peru is one of the few countries that can rightfully claim to
house one of the best museums in the world. Described by
visitors as “unmissable,” “an aesthetic pleasure,” “exceptional,”
and “a journey through time,” the Larco Museum has been
recognised as one of the top 20 museums in the world by the
TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards.
Larco Museum
The Museum boasts a collection of 45 thousand pieces
gathered throughout more than 92 years. Its founder, Rafael
Larco Hoyle, inaugurated the museum’s first location in
the Chillin Hacienda within the northern department of La
Libertad, in honour of his father, Rafael Larco Herrera, who
was known for his “patriotic spirit and love of the past.” It
was not until the 1950’s that the museum and its incredible
collection was transferred to Lima and installed in the very
same 300-year-old mansion it remains into this day.
To walk through the halls of this amazing place is to take
a trip through history, and connect with ancient Peru.
While cultures like the Nasca, Chimu, Wari, and Inca are
represented in each space, it is the Mochica Culture that
gets the most attention, as it was the pioneer collection
and the culture that inhabited the very northern terrain the
museum initially opened. Dazzling jewels, stunning textiles,
ceremonial trousseaus, weapons, vessels, and artefacts
will take you five thousand years into the past. Enjoy these
historic, cultural, and visual treasures as the experienced
museum guides tell you about the origins of many traditions
that remain alive today.
Are you looking for a complete experience? Enter
the storeroom that holds over 3 thousand additional
archaeological pieces. Then, make your way over to the famed
erotic pottery exhibition gallery and discover how ancient
Peruvians viewed and represented sexuality. Conclude your
visit with a well-deserved stop in the museum’s lovely café
as you enjoy the view of the gardens and colonial mansion.
