VINICUNCA AMONG
SITES IN PERU
The Mountain of Seven Colours, or Vinicunca, has
quickly become one of the most famous destinations
in our country, according to Cusco’s regional governor,
Edwin Licona. The unique natural attraction is the
second-most visited place in Peru after Machu Picchu.
Between 1,000 and 1,500 people visit Vinicunca on
a daily basis, depending on the season, and it is
expected that the site’s popularity continues to grow
thanks to the ongoing promotion. The mountain’s
When it comes to Peruvian art, Cusco is where it is. Home
Totemiq
to the classic Cusco School of Painting – one of Colonial
America’s most recognised schools of painting – the Inca
capital is a fascinating combination of pre-Colombian and
Colonial pieces, that together divulge the history of the city.
Walking through the streets, one is continuously faced with
works of art and galleries of all kinds – from contemporary
art to Inca masterpieces that adorn so many of the local
churches. If looking for folk art, however, the bohemian San
Blas neighbourhood is the spot.
Wander into the artistic heart of the city and make your way
to the studio of Julio Gutierrez, where you can spend time
making unforgettable memories as part of the Totemiq
Collective. Here is an ideal place to flex your artistic muscles
and practice your manual abilities as you chose two unique art
pieces made by the master artisan Gutierrez, and bring them
to life with your very own creativity and vision. As you work,
Gutierrez will tell you about the significance behind each
detail of his sculptures, as well as his creative process, and the
history of cultural expressions in the Imperial City.
Totemiq
During the workshop, you will have the chance to learn about
two classic techniques that have been passed down through
generations: Cusco’s Colonial glass ceramics, and Cusco’s
Colonial gold leafing. And to ensure that your memories of
this experience stay as alive and vivid as our cultural legacy,
you will have the chance to take your two unique and one-ofa-kind
art pieces with you.
There are some projects that enhance a community’s sense of
identity and pride. There are spaces that are reborn through
art and culture, eventually gaining international attention and
praise; places that were once avoided, only to become ‘hot
spots’ while simultaneously participating in positive social
change. This is the case for Monumental Callao: an artistic
proposal that has reawakened and increased the collective
value of the streets surrounding the port of Callao.
Only a few years ago, the district of Callao was synonymous
with danger. Organised crime and violence had overtaken
the streets and the area’s historic centre, resulting in fear and
general avoidance from locals and tourists alike. Nonetheless,
the resourceful chalacos – as those who live by the port are
called – were determined to find ways to bring the light back
into this important and historic neighbourhood.
Soon, a private initiative arrived at the area, and with the help of
locals, has slowly transformed these historic streets into works
of art, while concurrently giving residents a chance to engage
in legitimate economic and social evolution. What were once
dirty and decrepit walls are now restored and covered with
colourful graffiti murals. Old mansions have been remodelled
and now house art galleries and contemporary boutiques. The
assortment of fabulous restaurants are serving people from all
over the world, and Monumental Callao has become in vogue.
Monumental Callao is one big modern art exhibition that
everyone can be a part of – whether it be though participatory
graffiti workshops for adults and children, or by just enjoying
the unique ambience while taking in the lively and stimulating
surroundings.
Peru is one of the few countries that can rightfully claim to
house one of the best museums in the world. Described by
visitors as “unmissable,” “an aesthetic pleasure,” “exceptional,”
and “a journey through time,” the Larco Museum has been
recognised as one of the top 20 museums in the world by the
TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards.
Larco Museum
The Museum boasts a collection of 45 thousand pieces
gathered throughout more than 92 years. Its founder, Rafael
Larco Hoyle, inaugurated the museum’s first location in
the Chillin Hacienda within the northern department of La
Libertad, in honour of his father, Rafael Larco Herrera, who
was known for his “patriotic spirit and love of the past.” It
was not until the 1950’s that the museum and its incredible
collection was transferred to Lima and installed in the very
same 300-year-old mansion it remains into this day.
Larco Museum
To walk through the halls of this amazing place is to take
a trip through history, and connect with ancient Peru.
While cultures like the Nasca, Chimu, Wari, and Inca are
represented in each space, it is the Mochica Culture that
gets the most attention, as it was the pioneer collection
and the culture that inhabited the very northern terrain the
museum initially opened. Dazzling jewels, stunning textiles,
ceremonial trousseaus, weapons, vessels, and artefacts
will take you five thousand years into the past. Enjoy these
historic, cultural, and visual treasures as the experienced
museum guides tell you about the origins of many traditions
that remain alive today.
Are you looking for a complete experience? Enter
the storeroom that holds over 3 thousand additional
archaeological pieces. Then, make your way over to the famed
erotic pottery exhibition gallery and discover how ancient
Peruvians viewed and represented sexuality. Conclude your
visit with a well-deserved stop in the museum’s lovely café
as you enjoy the view of the gardens and colonial mansion.
AN OFFERING TO
MOTHER EARTH
History, archaeology and culture
LimaTours
Peru’s essence is infused with a mysticism that has woven its
way through the country’s history, bringing with it a series of
rituals and customs that continue to hold huge cultural value
to this day. Some of these have mutated over time, adapting
to occurring social changes, while others continue to be
practised and executed much like they were when conceived.
No matter the culture – be it Moche, Chachapoyas, Inca, etc. –,
nature and humankind’s connection to it has always been an
underlying theme and fundamental part of ancient Peruvians’
worldview. Andean cosmology – as it is known today –
emphasises the relationship between man and nature, and the
sacred connotation it possesses: the Earth is the Pachamama
(Mother Earth in Quechua), and the mountains are the Apus.
Together these revered entities protect and provide.
The Payment to Mother Earth is one of the most important
rituals performed in the Andes, done in gratitude to the
Pachamama for all the products, animals, and water that she
provides. With a quintu in hand (three select coca leaves that
are used to communicate with the gods), and an assortment
of objects that make up the traditional ‘despacho’ – all of
which are wrapped up in a weaving as colourful as a rainbow
– a shaman “returns” part of the goods received from Mother
LimaTours
Earth to her.
The arrival of the Spanish brought with it the uprooting of
native customs. Nonetheless, Andean residents managed to
adapt their traditions in ways that maintained their essence –
although this often meant hiding or camouflaging them within
the new, imposed customs. Luckily for us, these 500-yearold
rituals have stood the test of time, and we now have the
chance to be a part of them.
Start your morning with a good coffee, sweeten your palate
with a delicious afternoon chocolate treat, and conclude your
day with a refreshing chilcano de pisco. Sounds like a good
plan, doesn’t it? Well, in Peru, it’s all possible.
Coffee, cacao, and pisco are three of Peru’s main products, all of
which are internationally recognised for their excellent quality
and taste. While each one is a world of its own, they collectively
serve as an excellent portal into the exciting world of Peruvian
gastronomy. Thus, we at LimaTours have brought these three
star products together in an unforgettable experience within
one of the country’s most iconic cities: Cusco.
Aroma, flavour, and colour are three attributes that Peruvian
coffee has taken to the highest level, earning it praise and
awards in international competitions, as well as a place in the
world’s top 10 producers/exporters according to the World
Coffee Organization. Museo del Cafe is the first stop on our
trilogy route, opening its doors to show visitors which beans
are used in production, followed by a delicious tasting of
different varieties in order to learn about and appreciate each
one’s unique properties.
Did you know that Peru possesses 60% of the world’s variety
of cacao? And that the most exquisite chocolates produced
in Switzerland, Belgium, and France use Peruvian cacao as
their main ingredient? It is of no surprise, then, that this
luxury product is part of our tour. Stop into the Choco
Museo and indulge in a one-of-a-kind tasting of chocolate
and artisanal beer.
The arrival of the grape to Peru from Spain marked the birth
of one of the country’s most emblematic beverages. Our pisco
is without a doubt one of the most sought-after products
by visitors, and no trip to Peru can be considered complete
without enjoying this fine spirit in one of its many incarnations.
Upon arriving at the Museo del Pisco, you will have the chance
to learn about the different types of pisco and their unique
characteristics as you participate in a complete tasting of our
beloved national liquor.
Peru is inarguably privileged when it comes to natural wealth,
boasting a vast coast, stunning mountains, and a rich jungle,
which all come together to yield a unique and geographically
diverse place, bursting with an incredible variety of endemic
flora and fauna.
Among our natural attractions, Lake Titicaca stands out as
one of the most special. Located in the department of Puno,
this navigable lake – the highest in the world – spans across
8,562 square kilometres, and houses hundreds of people on its
various islands. From the shore, the lake appears as open and
endless as the ocean.
A tranquil boat trip across Titicaca is a great way to appreciate
the lake in all its splendour. For those looking to enjoy the
lake in a different way, however, there are Polynesian canoes
that can be taken across the waters to explore the shores
and lesser-known corners, taking passengers on visits to local
communities, and making memories under the starry night sky.
The journey takes three days of steady rowing across
approximately 80 kilometres – a tough but rewarding voyage
that promises to get you in contact with the surrounding nature
as you make your way. Your first stop is on the Uros Island,
known to have been built with reeds woven by its inhabitants
and located only 15 kilometres away. From there, 11 more
kilometres take you to the Llachon Community, where you will
camp for the night and have the chance to enjoy an enviable
view of the lake.
Taquile is your first stop of day two. This island is famous for its
pre-Inca legacy and the incredible and elaborate textiles woven
by the male members of the community. A gorgeous, whitesand
beach awaits you, complemented by calm waters perfect
for activities like paddleboarding. The last day brings with it the
final stretch: 30 kilometres of rowing to your final destination.
Those who wish to revel in the beauty of The Seven Colour
Mountain must put in the work. Located in Cusco, this
spectacular natural sight demands a two-day hike to over 5,000
meters above sea level – a trek completely worth the effort,
however, as this dreamy scenery is unlike anything else.
Vinicunca is located about 100 kilometres outside of Cusco, in
the Pitumarca district, within the Canchis province. The site
itself is stunning, and the natural scenery that surrounds the
route is equally as impressive, boasting native flora and fauna,
and a fantastic view of the revered Apu Ausangate, known for
protecting those who walk beneath it. The mountain’s stark
white peaks contrast with the bright colours of the mountain
and the rich blues of the sky.
LimaTours
While hard to fathom, the colourful Vinicunca Mountain was
under water two million years ago. Marine, lacustrine, and river
sediments settled in the area, eventually forming various layers
of different sizes that now look like stripes. Meanwhile, the
tectonic activity of the zone created the mountains, while the
colours are the results of a mix of minerals, like clay, sandstone,
marl, silicate, copper, calcium, and more.
The site’s recent popularity has turned it into one of Cusco’s mustsee
destinations. Thousands of people make their way to the
site to enjoy the unique visual spectacle, and to snap the perfect
photograph from the top of the lookout tower. It is hard not to
feel the grandeur of nature when in the presence of such a sight,
and even harder to overlook her fragility if not properly cared for.
There are always unique ways to experience Cusco that
provide lesser-known perspectives from which to absorb
what this Imperial city has to offer. How about an adventure
through the Sacred Valley of the Incas on an electric bicycle?
Formerly the heart of the Inca Empire, the Sacred Valley
continues to house an impressive agricultural world, as well
as a vast array of incredible Inca archaeological sites. From
monumental fortresses to Inca villages that maintain their
traditions to this day, the Valley is an unmissable destination
for all who come to Cusco. The perfect combination of nature,
history, and culture.
After refuelling at the chicheria, continue to the town of Pachar,
home of the Cerveceria del Valle (Sacred Valley Brewery). Here,
local ingredients are used to produce interesting and tasty
varieties of artisanal beer. This project not only yields a highquality
beverage, but it also contributes to the development
of local communities through activities and donations, and
without generating an impact on the local environment.
Cheers to that!
Hop on an electric bicycle and experience the symbiosis of the
modern and the traditional. Follow a 30 kilometre-long route
across agricultural fields and paths, passing through villages
and cities, with the steady murmuring of the river as your
soundtrack. Stop into a traditional chicheria where you will
have the chance to enjoy this ancestral, corn-based beverage
– prepared and sold on site.
Sergio Salazar
Recognised as part of Peru’s cultural heritage, chicha is
one of Latin America’s oldest traditional beverages. Made
from fermented corn, chicha was traditionally enjoyed by
Inca nobility and considered an essential part of religious
ceremonies as an offering to the gods. Today, chicha is often
used in local gastronomy as an ingredient in some of the
regional dishes served in traditional ‘picanterias’.
Immersed in the lush jungle of Cusco’s cloud forest lies an ancient
city, sister to Machu Picchu, thought to hold its world of valuable
secrets yet to be discovered. Choquequirao, which means cradle
of gold in Quechua, is a fantastic archaeological site nestled on
the top of a mountain, in which one can truly connect to nature
and lose themselves in the Incan past.
To access the site, one must embark on an unforgettable – albeit
challenging – four-day hike full of ascents and descents, that takes
you through a variety of microclimates. From Andean highlands
to Amazonian cloud forests; from 4,000 meters above sea level to
the deepest valleys; through vibrant green forests to centuries-old
stone walls. All this and more on this incredible route.
Choquequirao is an ancient Inca citadel built above the Apurimac
River Valley, 3,000 meters above sea level. Its size and limited
accessibility have made the excavation and study of the site’s
12 sectors a difficult task. Based on what has been uncovered,
however, the high-quality stonework indicates that the citadel
was used for ceremonial purposes and housing for the elite.
Some theories suggest that it also served as a control point,
and it was home of the last Inca bastion after the arrival of the
Spanish to Cusco.
Its plazas and terraces are noteworthy, as is the flora and fauna
that surround it. The impressive view of the valley shares the
spotlight with the Llamas of the Sun – llama figures made from
stone –, and the incredible number of butterflies that flutter
around hikers. Your camera is sure to be doing the most work
throughout the journey.
During the six-hour journey from the city of Lima to Huancaya,
you will traverse the coastal desert and make your way into the
abundant Andean scenery. The adventure begins aboard a 4x4
truck that takes you across dunes and to the Huaca Malena, an
archaeological site that has been occupied by different cultures
over the centuries, including the Wari and the Inca.
Archaeology will accompany you throughout the three-day
journey, as each of Huancaya’s districts house their own gems
– from Inca stairs to Colonial bridges. This area was of great
importance during the Inca Empire due to its surrounding
mountains and impressive lagoons; thus, the famed Qhapaq
When one thinks of Lima, nature is not the first thing that
comes to mind. There is, however, another side of Lima that
few know about. A side of her that shines under a clear blue
sky surrounded by turquoise lagoons, waterfalls, and sacred
mountains. This part of her is perfect for those looking to revel
in nature’s beauty, rest, and relax. This part is Huancaya, a
natural treasure tucked into Lima’s highlands.
Ñan – or Inca Trail – passed through the area.
After a socially turbulent time, Huancaya has been reborn and
shines with its own, unique light, earning recognition as one of
the best natural landscapes Peru has to offer.
Huancaya is relatively new on the tourist map. Part of the Nor
Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve, it boasts one of the two
most impressive high Andean landscapes and is the origin of
the Cañete River – one of the most important on the central
coast. The incredible thing about the place is its numerous
waterfalls and its lovely Polylepis forests, guarded by the
Pariacaca Mountain, a deity from Inca times.
INTERVIEW WITH
JOSE “HEAD CHEF”
PEDRAZA
INTERVIEW
HOW MIGHT YOU SUMMARISE THIS YEAR FOR LIMATOURS?
Jose: It’s been a great year, not just because of the results, but,
also because of the processes that we’ve implemented to get
them. For us, the way we achieve our results is more important
than the results themselves: the processes and the complete
methodology.
WHAT HAS BEEN OUR MOST SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT?
Jose: This year we beat our annual sales and utility record. This
LIMATOURS’
MANAGING
DIRECTOR
The year may be coming
to an end, but the work
does not stop.
LimaTours’ Managing Director
summarises this year’s
achievements and takes us
through some of what we can
expect in 2019..
is due to the fact that we are much more efficient – not just with
costs, but also with our processes, and we will continue to work
on this in 2019.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS LIMATOURS’ FORTITUDE,
ALLOWING US TO CONTINUE AS LEADERS IN THE INDUSTRY
AFTER 60 YEARS?
Jose: Its people, without a doubt. And in that light, the most
noteworthy thing is that each person is perfectly aware of what
they need to do. Everyone is given the freedom to work, and
that is truly empowering. Youth is also an important factor; if we
calculate the average age of the people who work here, we can
see that it is an incredibly young, dynamic, and versatile business.
Our team loves their country, they love their company, and they
love their jobs.
THE YOUTH PROMOTES INNOVATION…
Jose: One of the key factors in the business is innovation – not
just when it comes to products, but also when it comes to our
processes and the use of technology as a tool. Truthfully, the
sky is the limit, and it is these younger people who are the most
prepared to face the new challenges.
SPEAKING OF TECHNOLOGY, WHAT IS OUR RELATIONSHIP
WITH IT?
Jose: We use Aurora, which is a strategy to guarantee our
efficiency and to make sure that our clients have everything they
also need to be successful. We don’t conceive technology without
the personal touch that has always characterised LimaTours. We
Sergio Salazar
37
INTERVIEW
work on transmitting knowledge about the destination, on the
personal touch, and we use technology as a foundation for that
combination to be the best it can be. Using technology, we also
hope to eliminate any of the processes that do not add any value
to what we do as an organisation.
SOME SEE TECHNOLOGY AS A REPLACEMENT FOR PEOPLE.
Jose: That is not the case. In wanting to have everything on
Aurora, we look to liberate our personnel from meaningless
tasks so that they can spend their time doing what they are
meant to do: be great, expert advisors on Peru. We are the
authorities in our country, which aligns with our mission to
passionately share Peru and all its treasures with the world.
By liberating our specialists from these manual processes, we
become consultants rather than salespeople, giving our clients
what they actually need.
What is Aurora?
JOSE: AURORA IS AN ONLINE PLATFORM THAT CAN BE
ACCESSED FROM ANYWHERE, AT ANY MOMENT. ON IT,
USERS CAN SEE ALL THAT LIMATOURS OFFERS. MORE
THAN PROVIDING ONLINE QUOTES OR RESERVATIONS,
IT IS A WAY FOR USERS TO ACCESS OUR PHOTOGRAPH
AND VIDEO DATABASES, TO READ DESCRIPTIONS OF
ALL THE SERVICES WE OFFER, TO VIRTUALLY FOLLOW
THEIR PASSENGERS, TO SEE ALL THE DOCUMENTATION
OF THEIR FILES, ETC. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR WITH
AURORA IS TO CREATE A CENTRAL ARCHIVE FOR THE
CLIENTS AND FOR OURSELVES, WHILE OPTIMISING
EFFICIENCY, IMPROVEMENT, AND THE SUSTAINABILITY
OF THE RESOURCES WE USE.
Aurora, the gateway into LimaTours’
world is just a click away.
LimaTours
38
INTERVIEW
Thanks to tourism, the Huilloc community has
experienced improvements in their quality of life.
LimaTours
ONE OF THIS YEAR’S MILESTONES HAS BEEN A COMPLETE
INTERNAL RESTRUCTURING. WHY WAS THIS DONE?
Jose: It precisely has to do with processes. We realised that –
with the way that we were structured – there was an overlap of
operations. With these changes, we are looking to make sure our
people spend their time doing what they have to do, rather than
wasting time on other tasks that limit productivity and efficiency.
Another important point is that it permits the specialisation and
standardisation in the workplace: there were areas that worked
in different ways besides having the same function, but there was
no clear line of work. This is going to change to benefit the whole
Our
specialised
guides offer
the best
assistance for
tourists.
LimaTours
LimaTours team, as well as our clients.
concern for conservation. Thus, we make an effort to transmit
those values to those around us so that they are moved to do the
same in their private environments.
When it comes to social responsibility, we work with the Huilloc
Community, and on the Plan Wallata in Ollantaytambo, Cusco. We
hope to help them recognise the value of their traditions and the
potential these have as sustainable development opportunities,
and – through that – strengthen their sense of identity and
better their life quality. I think that in this globalised world, where
everything is made to be the same, Peru can be an example of
something different thanks to its historical, cultural, natural, and
gastronomic elements – all of which come together and make it
shine as a destination worthy of a visit.
LimaTours
WE AS A BUSINESS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT SOCIAL
RESPONSIBILITY AND ARE COMMITTED TO THE
COMMUNITIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT. WHY IS THIS SO
IMPORTANT TO US?
Jose: The environmental issue is fundamental. We are certified
by Rainforest Alliance and we practice eco-consciousness in the
office and our operations – reducing our use of paper and plastic,
and being aware of the traceability of the waste we generate. We
would like all who collaborate with LimaTours to have the same
Visitors and Huilloc community members
sharing an experiential tourism activity.
39
INTERVIEW
WHEN AT OVERSEAS FAIRS, HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT
PEOPLE HAVE A CERTAIN PERCEPTION OF PERU?
Jose: They think Peru is only Machu Picchu and the Incas. That is
something that happens to all of us: we have the idea that there
was just this one, grand culture. We have the chance to share
Peru as so much more than that; as a place that dates back over
five thousand years ago, full of the history and culture of many
civilisations – and that the Incas were just a small part of it all.
LimaTours
The Amazon
has huge
touristic
potential
just waiting
to be
uncovered.
HOW DO WE DO THAT?
Jose: By being ambassadors of the country. We are lucky to work
in tourism, and through that, we have the chance to tell people
about Peru. We have inherited centuries worth of culture, because
everything we see today is a continuation of what once was.
The Kuelap
Fortress in
Chachapoyas,
a popular
destination.
WHAT PLANS DOES LIMATOURS HAVE FOR NEXT YEAR?
Jose: Concerning technology, we will continue to delve into the
use of the Aurora platform and to perfect it. We will also look for
new ways to promote our products, knowing that newly launched
LimaTours
LimaTours
products don’t necessarily have an immediate impact, and thus,
they require a particular strategy. And, as always, we will continue
to work on interpreting what a guest really wants out of their trip
to Peru: to enjoy new experiences, whether cultural, adventure,
gastronomic, nature-based, family, etc.
LASTLY, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE LIMATOURS’
ESSENCE?
Jose: We feel passionate about sharing our country – it is a
passion that makes our eyes sparkle when we merely talk about
Peru. What makes us different is that we don’t sell tours, we sell
passion for Peru, and we feel pride in belonging to an organisation
like LimaTours because of the way that it promotes and values the
best our country has to offer. Everything we do is only achieved
with a team that is committed, well prepared, and HAPPY.
In 2012, four talented Peruvian chefs lost their lives in a tragic
car accident. Ivan Kisic – who up to that point was considered
one of Peru’s most promising young chefs – was among those
lost. A year later, his family inaugurated IK, a restaurant named
after him and established with the idea of maintaining his legacy
by always practising and promoting the respect for ingredients,
sustainability, and passion for Andean cuisine.
The restaurant’s philosophy is to share with its guests the glory
of contemporary Peruvian gastronomy, while not straying
from its roots. By using local products and reviving ancestral
culinary techniques, IK has successfully satisfied the palates of
thousands of food lovers from across the globe.
This year, Francesca Ferreyros, who began her culinary career in
stride with Ivan Kisic, has taken over as head chef. Her meticulously
designed tasting menu – which offers five-course, seven-course,
and twelve-course options – brings together coastal, Andean,
and Amazonian influences and ingredients, adding a touch of
international flair without losing its Peruvian essence.
The daily menu at IK is comprised of 20 dishes: appetizers, entrees,
and desserts. Its three ambiances look to calm the senses and
eliminate possible distractions so that guests can focus on the
extraordinary gastronomic experience at hand. With sustainability
as an underlying theme and principal, the main dining room is
decorated with recycled wood and lovely indoor plants.
Albergue Ollantaytambo
No trip to the Peruvian Andes is complete without partaking
in one of the most treasured and picturesque local traditions:
the pachamanca. This centuries-old custom is a celebration
in and of itself, bringing people and communities together to
participate and enjoy the goods of the earth.
To quiet one’s hunger during the cooking process, participants
are invited to wander the stunning hotel grounds. The organic
farm is cultivated without the use of chemicals, and follows
a traditional cultivation schedule that allows for the land to
“rest.” Above the farm, you can find the on-site distillery where
sugarcane alcohol is crafted into an impressive, high-quality
spirit, or visit the coffee roasting laboratory where the master
roaster will teach you about Peru’s coffee varieties.
Pachamanca is a Quechua word, which translates to ‘earth
oven.’ As the name suggests, the cooking is done by placing
hot rocks into a hole dug into the earth, which is then covered
with leaves. The pachamanca is a way to share the celebratory
experience with Mother Earth and to thank her for her bounty.
Pork, chicken, beef, lamb, and Guinea pig are customarily
accompanied by local potatoes, yams, humitas, corn, and
cheese, and slowly cooked to perfection in this beautiful and
delicious ritual of flavours.
Sometimes there are diners who look not only for great food,
but also a memorable and unique experience.
Our huariques tour takes guests on a journey through Peru’s
gastronomy from a different angle. As you make your way
through the city on a bike in this four-hour tour, you will be
taken to a series of delightful spots to eat like a local. Each
restaurant has its own particular low-key – yet inviting – feel
Open your appetite with a ride across the Pacific Ocean-front
esplanade that takes you from the Miraflores to the Barranco
When it comes time for dessert, you have the chance to
GREAT INCA TRAIL
When it comes to the Inca Trail, most think of the highly
transited route that takes tourists to Machu Picchu, in Cusco.
This 40-kilometre segment, however, is actually a small part of
a network of roads called Qhapac Ñan, which span over 60,000
kilometres – from Colombia to Argentina – and was originally
created to unify the entire Inca Empire.
There are Inca trails across most of Peru’s coast and mountains.
While many of them have been tragically erased by the
construction of cities, roads, or a general lack of care, there are
still areas – especially in the Andes – where one can encounter
various segments of these networks, many of which are well
preserved and still used by members of local communities.
“Qhapaq Ñan: The Great Inca Trail” is the result of a 130-day
expedition in search of the best-preserved areas of the trail,
with the goal of promoting both their touristic potential and
the importance of their conservation. The seven day-six
night programme departs from Huaraz in Ancash and takes
you to the Huanuco Pampa Archaeological Site in Huanuco
– one of the most important northern administrative sites of
the Empire.
As you make your way, accompanied by the impressive
mountains of the Cordillera Blanca Mountain Range, you will
pass through communities that still use the Qhapaq Ñan as
their only connection to the surrounding villages. Admire
ancient stone staircases; note how the trail weaves around
lagoons and rivers as it continues into the horizon of the
beautiful, open pampas; make your way from the frigid and
arid highlands to warm, lush valleys, and enjoy the incredible
variety of landscapes and ecosystems Peru has to offer in just
70 kilometres.
A bit over two hours north of Lima lies the ancient city of Caral,
a wondrous place deserving of its UNESCO World Heritage Site
title. This city was the most important for a civilisation that
inhabited the coastal deserts of Peru over 5,000 years ago,
making it the oldest city in the Americas.
On par with China, Egypt, India, and Mesopotamia, parts of
Peru were also thriving all these years ago, boasting incredible
constructions made with local natural materials – like stone and
preserved, and its pyramids can be truly appreciated with the
stark desert and blue skies as a background.
The desert is synonymous with dunes, and dunes are
synonymous with adventure. In our attempt to put a spin on
the typical visit to this extraordinary archaeological site, we
integrated a pinch of adrenaline into our tour, inviting guests
Cusco is full of impressive landscapes hidden amongst the
Apus and protected by the Pachamama, making it a paradise
for trekking lovers anxious to discover terrestrial treasures.
Offering connection and disconnection at the same time,
this is a perfect way to tune into nature and exchange the
chaos of the city for the quiet company of the surrounding
mountains and stars.
Embark on an adventure that takes you across the
Intu
unforgettable Inca Trail or Salkantay Mountain demands
a time commitment that not all can afford. If you only have
a few days in Cusco, but you are still interested in taking a
hike into the heart of the Inca Empire, we offer you equally
fascinating full-day options.
For those looking for a one-of-a-kind cultural encounter,
hiking through Choquechaca and Huilloc is the way to go.
Both communities boast traditions inherited from Inca
times, like their clothing, work distribution, and language.
Participate in different activities, visit towns, learn about
customs like cooking and weaving, participate in ritual
offerings to the earth, and discover nearby archaeological
sites. All this and more in an incredibly unique and gorgeous
green valley with amazing views at every turn.
If you are looking to familiarise yourself with Inca history,
there are two interesting programme options: Chinchero-
Urquillo, and Maras-Moray. These tours will introduce a unique
perspective of the more typical tour circuits the Sacred Valley
has to offer. Forget the buses and make your way by foot, down
paths that have been continuously used by locals for hundreds
of years. Become familiar with the Inca legacy as you tour the
Chinchero and Moray Archaeological Sites, and learn about the
wonderful riches the earth has to offer in these places, like the
famous Urquillo corn, and the Maras Salt Pools.
Do you want to discover unique places? If so, the Huchuy
Qosqo and the Balcon del Diablo (Devil’s Balcony) sites are for
you. While notably impressive, Huchuy Qosqo – thought to be
one of the Inca’s residencies – is still not heavily frequented by
tourists. Meanwhile, Balcon del Diablo brings together nature
and legacy: a rock formation carved by the Incas as a place
dedicated to the worship of water, with a platform that acts as
Intu
a balcony, and a gorgeous cave with a waterfall.
THE HEART
OF CUSCO
To stroll through Cusco’s historic centre is to inevitably come
to appreciate the symbiosis between the Inca and the Colonial.
Impressive stone walls flank two-story houses with wooden
balconies, temples are built upon temples, and plazas stand
where Inca structures once did.
Belmond Palacio Nazarenas
The Belmond Palacio Nazarenas Hotel is another beautiful
example of this fascinating mix. What was once an Inca building
was then taken over by the Spanish in the 1500s and turned
into a house. This house later became a Jesuit school, only
to become a house again, before finally transforming into a
sanctorum. This secular essence is still evident in many parts
of the construction that remain today, which include the
ancient fountain in the cloisters patio, the painted ceilings, and
the stone archways that were built by the Inca and served as
entryways into important rooms.
The hotel features 55 oxygen-enriched rooms with personal
butler services. Its private library exhibits books that belonged
to the residents of the sanctorum, and its restored chapel
displays artworks from the period. If you are looking to relax,
take a walk through the lovely interior gardens, dive into Cusco’s
first heated outdoor pool, or indulge in a luxurious treatment
with organic products at the hotel’s spa, which boasts a glass
floor that showcases a splendid original Inca wall below.
The hotel offers cooking classes with the resident chef, a visit to
the San Pedro Market to discover local ingredients, shopping
trips to nearby stores, tours of the bohemian San Blas
neighbourhood, and much more.
Sol y Luna Hotel
Sol y Luna Hotel
Located in the heart of the Sacred Valley, this hotel combines
art, tradition, and wellness. During your stay at the Sol y Luna,
enjoy a luxury experience while simultaneously contributing
to the education of local children in surrounding Cusco
communities.
The hotel’s 43 casitas, or bungalows, are surrounded by
splendid gardens perfect for wandering through as you learn
about Andean flora. Each cottage is made from local materials,
and all offer spectacular views of the nearby mountains,
inevitably connecting guests with the spirits of the Inca deities.
The casitas are decorated with Peruvian culture in mind:
textiles hang on the walls, colonial furniture marks each space,
and the sheets are made from Peruvian cotton. Nonetheless,
the most noteworthy aspect of each suite is the personalised
mural inspired by the surrounding valley.
Like other hotels in the Sacred Valley, the Sol y Luna works
hand in hand with local farmers, obtaining the freshest
products possible. The hotel’s gourmet cuisine reclaims some
of the Andean culinary traditions; its menu is notably refined
and its kitchen staff is well trained by the renowned chef Pedro
Miguel Schiaffino. Both restaurants, KillaWasi and Wayra, are
boldly decorated with sculptures and bright coloured murals –
all of which are produced by national artists.
Those who stay at the Sol y Luna contribute to the education
of the local children who attend the Intercultural Sol y Luna
School, established and run by the Sol y Luna Civil Association.
Along with the school, the Association maintains a temporary
lodging for those children who come from remote villages,
giving them the chance to avoid endless treks to and from
school, and providing an ideal learning environment.
For over a century, the stars have made up a fundamental
part of Inca life. Not only they were considered deities, but
these shining entities also served to inspire and guide the
construction of temples and cities across the empire. The
Incas were expert astronomers and they gave meaning to
each constellation, making each one a part of their history and
cultural legacy.
One of the greatest pleasures of visiting Cusco is being able to
enjoy that same, starry sky. On clear evenings, the moonlight
reflects on the snow-capped peaks and the sky shines extra
bright with the light of thousands of stars spayed across the
black background. Can you imagine falling asleep to that fantastic
and privileged image with the Urubamba River steadily flowing
beneath you?
Skylodge is an extraordinary lodging located only 15 minutes
from the town of Ollantaytambo. This incredible hotel – although
not for the faint of heart – boasts transparent pods that securely
hang on a cliffside 400 meters over the Sacred Valley. Each pod
contains everything one might desire for a comfortable and
memorable stay: a room, a bathroom, and a dining room in
which you can enjoy a gourmet dinner under the moonlight and
a hearty breakfast with a stunning view of the valley below.
To reach the lodge, one must brace themselves for a good
adrenaline rush and ascend the cliffside via a path of iron rings
encrusted into the rock called Via Ferrata. Finish your visit as
it began, and prepare for the greatest rush of all: fly down the
mountain on a series of seven zip lines that take you 2,800 meters
back down to the valley. An unforgettable experience for sure.
