A wine label is a key to what is in the bottle. It can indicate the grape<br />

or grapes used, a region it comes from and other characteristics.<br />

If you don’t know the wine from previous<br />

experience, it is the only clue as to what you<br />

are buying.<br />

Three questions spring to mind from this.<br />

Should I buy it ? Should I drink it ? and what<br />

does it taste like ?<br />

Sometimes a classic, elegant design such as<br />

produced by a Bordeaux winemaker implies a<br />

serious wine with stature. However, with these<br />

wines there is very little information about<br />

What makes one wine different from another?<br />

There are about 4 reasons why this is so. The<br />

grape variety is certainly one of the most<br />

important, being the main constant in the<br />

wine and which can lead to the particular<br />

flavour and bouquet. The soil being the other<br />

constant to consider and it becomes useful<br />

to get to know these two in time. White<br />

Burgundy uses the Chardonnay grape and is<br />

mostly on limestone soil. Cru Beaujolais is the<br />

Gamay grape and is on granite soil.<br />

Often the grape name is used with the place<br />

named on a label eg Riesling d’Alsace.<br />

The Climate is a predominant factor in wine<br />

style and characteristics. Burgundy in North<br />
