& GARDEN
January
THE START OF THE YEAR
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : Now’s a great time to prune
currants and gooseberries - especially new
bushes or cordons.
In January, your garden could
need protecting from frosts,
gale-force winds and heavy rain.
General
Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for
damage and consider moving plants to sunnier
positions to maximize light.
Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, food is scarce
for them over winter.
You can also start planning next year’s vegetable
plot.
Fruit
• Plant bare-root trees and bushes, as long as the soil
isn’t frozen.
Vegetables
• Sow broad beans in pots in mild areas, placing
them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.
• Sow seed indoors for early crops eg: lettuces,
summer brassicas (e.g. cabbages and cauliflowers),
spinach, salad onions and turnips.
• Sow onion seed in a heated propagator.
