THE NOOK APPEAL...
On your bake! Cyclists raise
hundreds of pounds for the
nook appeal.
A group of Norfolk cyclists have raised
£308.14 for the nook appeal by treating
themselves to cake.
The 53-11 Cycling Club was founded in
April 2014 and its members, of all ages
and abilities, are easy to spot as they
wear unmistakeable, bright pink jerseys.
The club leads social rides on three
evenings of the working week plus during
the day on Sundays.
The rides often include some sort of
café or pub stop, further promoting the
social aspect. Recently, cyclists have
been indulging in cakes baked by Sally
Eggleton, donating £1 to the nook appeal
for every slice.
Donations have, generously, been doubled by Ian Goody,
a member of 53-11 and also CEO of Premier Financial
Group that sponsors the club.
Cyclists handed over the money when they cycled to East
Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), the charity behind
the nook appeal, in Quidenham.
Tim Jenkins, EACH Norfolk Community Fundraiser, said:
“How fantastic that these folks are doing something they
love, having a tasty treat along the way and managing
to support us in the process! We’ve around £1.6 million
left to raise of our £10 million nook appeal. The money
is funding the building of our brand new hospice in
Framingham Earl that will transform children’s palliative
care for Norfolk.”
The 53-11 Cycling Club has agreed to support the nook
appeal throughout 2019 when it hopes to raise double
what it has done this year.
For more information about the nook appeal, visit
BY ZEE BATTERSBY
I’m not old i’m
retro
Check out my new
look fashion website
imnotoldimretro.co.uk
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… OK, so firstly a reminder
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short), I’m 45, a mother and a grandmother.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
I am hoping the Christmas break
was all you hoped for?
It’s January sale time, the
perfect opportunity to
buy those staples for the
year. A great coat and
great footwear will see
you through until next sale
season. It’s bit like when
you’re redecorating you
spend the most money on
the flooring and curtains
then anything else you add
just looks great!
Now, I‘m not sure how you will take this
news, but cowboy boots are having a
renaissance. I‘m actually quiet pleased
and totally on the lookout for my own
on eBay! If you don’t want to go full on
Texan style here is some high
street inspiration. It ties in
nicely with fringing, which
has featured heavily on
the 2019 catwalks. I’m not
suggesting you go all ‘Achy
Breaky Heart’ on me but
consider adding a little to
your SS19 wardrobe.
My favourites on the
catwalks were Dolce and
Gabbana - they set a president and used
plus size models which I think should
happen in all shows.
Floral trouser suits will be everywhere and
the great thing about that is you can wear
the trousers and jacket separately. Look at
JANUARY 2019 | ISSUE #75
FASHION
Zara and Topshop for inspiration.
Headwear is another trend I’m
seeing everywhere. Be brave and
find your style.
Matchy-matchy is also something
I’m loving. Think about matching
the patterns on your shoes to
your dress and bag. It sounds
extreme but it looks fantastic.
Lastly, shoes. They are full of
buckles and exaggerated heels.
Keep a lookout for the high
street versions.
I dyed my hair brown in
December and had probably the
best hair experience ever at the
new salon in BSE Called Vanity
Eight. Read my interview with
the owners over on my Blog now
or see the Hair & Beauty section
further on in this edition. It shows
exactly what happens when two
amazing women team up to
make a dream come true, and
boy is it brilliant.
I think all fashion shows
should use plus size models
There are more interviews over
on the blog and more in-depth
fashion finds as well as my
Instagram finds. So until next
month Happy shopping.
Be brave and find your
style of headwear!
Stay stylish - Love Zee x
Newly Engaged...
BY LISA MARIE SMITH
There is so much love
and excitement that
surrounds a newly
engaged couple, and I just
absolutely love it!
But then soon after that
excitement wears off,
you’re hit with the reality
of the fact that you have to
start planning a wedding–
something that you most
likely have no clue about?
Well, don’t fret, because I am
here to help you out!
1. SET A BUDGET...
You shouldn’t be doing anything before deciding on your
budget. Sit down with your parents, family members, or
just the two of you, figure out who is contributing, how
much they can contribute, and what your total budget
will be. Then you can move on to #2!
2. CHOOSE 2-3 POSSIBLE DATES...
To be safe, choose 2-3 possible dates to have your
wedding. Think of the time of year you prefer, the
weather, work schedules/holiday time, holidays. Then
choose your #1 preferred date, and have a #2 and #3
available in case your preferred date isn’t available.
Because venues book up fast- some even book up to a
year and half in advance!
3. START YOUR GUEST LIST...
This is another tough one because yes, of course you
want to invite everyone you know to your wedding. Well
consider this your warning: the more people you have,
the more you have to spend.
4. DECIDE ON YOUR WEDDING’S STYLE...
Vintage, modern, classic, eclectic, handmade, rustic…
there are SO many styles out there! No need to design
18

WEDDING
JANUARY JANUARY 2019 | 2019 ISSUE | ISSUE #75 | #75 WEDDING
your whole wedding right now
though- just know the general look
and feel of how you want your
wedding to be. Once you know that,
it’ll be easier to move on to #5…
5. DECIDE ON YOUR VENUE...
All of those first 4 steps above
can essentially be done all in one
sitting. When you’re researching
and you find a venue that you like,
I recommend contacting them and
asking if they have any of your
possible dates available. If they do,
then go ahead and schedule a time
to tour the venue. Once you have
your venue booked (meaning deposit
made and contract signed), your
date is secured.
7. INQUIRE AND BOOK VENDORS...
So by now you’ve done your research
and you know what vendors you
like. Now it’s time to contact the
vendor, find out if they’re available
for your date, check on their pricing
(if you want to), and schedule a
consultation.
8. WEDDING DRESS!...
I don’t think this needs much
explanation. This part can be a lot
of fun, perhaps take mum or your
bridesmaids along for a second
opinion!
DON’T FORGET...
Remember, sometimes things are
done differently depending on your
own situation, so it’s totally fine if
you don’t follow these steps exactly!
Until next time...
Lisa x
Need a little help
organising your
wedding photography?
Look no further! We ask
multi award-winning
photographer, Haleana
Knights her top tips...
Q: How do you make
sure you meet a couple’s
requirements?
A: I always try and meet
my couples before hand
so that I can get to know
what they like and dislike,
what their vision of the day
looks like and how they feel
in front of the camera. I
then encourage the couple
to contact me as many
times as they need to. We
also meet again before
the big day to firm up the
itinerary details and tie up
any loose ends. Some of the
best weddings I have ever
shot, have been as a result
of open communications
between me and the couple
getting married. I love it
when they feel inspired by
our chats and are invested in
getting the best shots of
their day as possible.
Q: How would you describe
your style? Do you prefer
candid or more traditional
photos?
A: I love them both for
different reasons! I absolutely
love disappearing into the
background and capturing
the moments as they happen,
whether it’s the father’s
reaction to his daughter in
her wedding dress or the
tears of laughter during
the best man’s speech.
Having said that, a majority
of my couples ask for the
group shots because they
know that their parents or
grandparents will love having
these for the mantelpiece.
My favourite part of the day
is the stylised session where
I steal the newlyweds away
for a while to get some really
beautiful pictures of them
alone, together. If a couple
tell me that they want an
entirely documentary-style
wedding with absolutely no
posed photos, then that is what
I will deliver and if a couple ask
for mainly candid photography
with a few traditional elements
thrown in, I will deliver that too.
So in a nutshell, I would say
that I offer something in the
middle, with a little flexibility
thrown in.
Q: Finally, what are your top
tips for couple’s choosing a
wedding photographer?
A: Ask to see a selection of
images throughout the day.
It’s really important to see
whether the photographer
you’re interested in can
handle all the different light
situations. I’d also be sure that
they are operating have the
proper insurances, contracts
and all the appropriate gear
and equipment for your
day. And last, but not least,
make sure you meet your
photographer face to face
before booking and be sure
that you get along! They will
be shadowing you on one of
the most important days of
your life after all!
JANUARY 2019 JANUARY | ISSUE 2019 #75 | ISSUE | RAMIN #75 KARIMLOO
RAMIN KARIMLOO
Ramin Karimloo, one of the West-End’s and Broadway’s most recognizable and
acclaimed names, has announced his ‘From Now On’ tour, across the UK.
Named after his version of the powerful
song from the Oscar-nominated film The
Greatest Showman, the concerts will see
Ramin perform well-known numbers from
Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera
and more of your favourite musical and
contemporary hits.
Award nomination. In addition, he played
the role of Enjolras in the 25 th Anniversary
of Les Miserables at the O2 Arena in
London. Most recently, Ramin starred
as Gleb in Anastasia on Broadway and
Anatoly in Chess at the Kennedy Center in
Washington, DC.
Putting a fresh twist
onto the tracks, Ramin
will be accompanied by
his ‘Broadgrass’ band,
a clever mix between
‘Broadway’ and the
bluegrass genre.
The Iranian-born
Canadian singer and
performer is known
as one of the most
formidable talents in musical theatre.
Critically acclaimed for his portrayal
of leading roles - Jean Valjean in Les
Miserables on Broadway (2014 Tony Award
nominee) and London’s West End as well
as the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera
in London, Ramin is a musical force unlike
any other. He immortalized the role in the
25 th Anniversary Concert of Phantom of
The Opera at The Royal Albert Hall and
also originated the leading role in Love
Never Dies, the sequel to Phantom of the
Opera, for which he received an Olivier
Ramin, who also plays the banjo and guitar,
will perform with his band
comprising of Nick Pini,
Alan Markley, Sergio Ortega,
Georgina Leach. He will be
stopping by Suffolk on 29 th
January performing at The
Apex in Bury St Edmunds.
Bounce Magazine speaks to
Ramin about his upcoming
tour.
Ramin, You’ve played some
of the most well known and iconic roles
in musical theatre - which has been your
favourite to perform?
Oh, That’s a difficult one. I have enjoyed
them all. Recently I played Che in Evita
and that was a blast. Such a great
character to play as he’s so dynamic.
Of course Jean Valjean and The Phantom
were a gift to play as an actor. I also have a
fond memory of playing Archibald Craven
in Secret Garden.
If you could only pick one, would you
prefer to reprise your role of the Phantom
or Jean Valjean, and why?
pounds (good pounds) for Jean Valjean. I
was on a diet of around 5000 calories a
day.
I don’t think I can pick one based on
preference.
The journey each role allows you to play, as
I said in the previous answer, were a gift.
But if I HAD to choose one, I’ll roll with
Valjean purely on not having to sit through
all that make up nightly.
Are there any roles in theatre or film/tv
you would love to play?
Sure. I’m open to diversity and anything
that puts a little fear in me which will make
me have to up my game every time.
I had a great time filming Nativity Rocks
and a period drama for The History
Channel. 2019 will have me in front of the
camera for most of the year.
It took an extreme amount of disciple and
dedication. Especially to maintain it while
playing Valjean for 7 shows a week and still
have that diet and bodybuilding regime.
What started off as a chore became a
passion.
I enjoyed how it made me feel and for my
over mental health. I enjoy the challenges I
put on myself.
I like seeing the results whether it’s
strength, functionality, mobility, endurance
and aesthetically (purely personal goals).
Now, do I think it’s important or even a
necessity for an artist to keep a certain
shape? Absolutely not.
I think each to their own and diversity
should be celebrated and embraced.
Wouldn’t have minded a leading regular
role in Son’s of Anarchy. Could have put
my Harley to use as well on that. Shame
that show is finished. I’m really enjoying
Vikings currently as well.
As long as someone is happy in their skin
and their doctors are happy then that’s
great. Everyone has their own goals and
desires. This is mine and I do it because I
enjoy it.
You’re very active also in terms of
wellbeing and fitness, particularly
Crossfit. What is it about this discipline
that appealed to you? Is it important as an
artist to make sure you’re kept in physical
shape due to the demanding nature of
your work?
You know, it all started with gaining 20
For those interested in pursuing a career
in musical theatre, what advice would you
give them? And what has been the best
advice given to you?
Never rest on your laurels. Nothing is
owed to you. Nothing should be expected.
Nothing is deserved. Stay hungry.
33

JANUARY 2019 JANUARY | ISSUE 2019 #75 | ISSUE | RAMIN #75 KARIMLOO
If you’re uninspired, it’s your fault. As
an artist we have to keep a sense of
uncertainty. That’s how we adapt. Grow.
Find.
Above all, never, never stop having fun.
You’ve performed on many prestigious
occasions and with some fantastic
duetting partners (ie with Nicole
Scherzinger at Royal Variety
performance). From your career so far,
is there a particular highlight that stands
out?
Working with Nicole was certainly a
highlight.
Singing for Her Majesty The Queen and
Prince Charles at Windsor castle was quite
the night. It was surreal chatting with them
afterwards about food and tv shows.
Performing in the 25th Anniversary of The
Phantom of The Opera and Les Miserables
as The Phantom and Enjolras, respectively
was a huge honour.
melody. It just made me want to sing it.
It made me think about relationships and
connections.
How ‘noise’ has distanced us from what’s
important. This was the narrative going
through my mind when I was hearing it
mind you.
It made me think about family and friends.
So, I wanted to sing this with my friends.
So we did.
Our tours are always about connection
and relationships. We are a tight group. A
family.
You will see that on stage and you will hear
in our music and our interpretations of
these brilliant songs.
Whats the biggest difference for you
when performing in a production to your
own headline show?
My own shows are a lot harder to be
honest.
Originating the Phantom in Love Never
Dies was a dream.
Performing on NYE with The Avett Brothers
in North Carolina was a huge moment for
me as well.
Your tour is named ‘From Now On’, after
your cover of the track from The Greatest
Showman. What made you want to cover
this track in particular?
When I heard it I loved the lyrics and the
It takes a lot more out of me physically
and vocally. But it’s worth it. There’s no
character to hide behind. That took a while
to get comfortable with.
To be happy in my own ‘costume’ so to
speak.
I also like the challenge of making these
songs from the shows live out side of the
story. We present these songs separate
from the shows but not without the drama.
They are still great stories.
What can fans expect from your
Bury St Edmunds show?
Not a fan of the word ‘expect’
however they can anticipate
incredible songs with my great
band.
There is a great energy from the
stage into the audience.
There is a real sense of
community. It’s hard to explain
but we experience it with each
show.
Every show has it’s own unique
identity.
You definitely will have a great
time and make friends. That
seems to be how things have
gone with our shows.
Can you elaborate a little on
what the genre of Broadgrass is?
Ultimately it’s just a term that I
jokingly made as a throw-a-way
as I/we were finding our feet and
sound on the road on one of our
American tours.
At that time we were not
Bluegrass and I had yet to have
done Broadway.
But our sound was influenced
from Broadway to Bluegrass.
Now we have our sound. It’s got
a lot more songs from the stage
in them but done in an earthy
stripped back way.
Like a great folk, country or pop
song, musical theatre offers so
many great songs that tell a great
story on their own.
Whether it’s with the full band or
just an acoustic, banjo and fiddle.
Bring Him Home sounds beautiful
like that.
What can 2019 expect from
Ramin Karimloo?
You can anticipate a lot more time
in front of a camera which I’m
excited about that new challenge.
Tips for Beating the Winter Blues…
Christmas is over, the tree is down
and packed away and everywhere
looks that bit gloomier without the
festive lights and decorations.
So here are a few tips to beat the winter blues:
Eat Healthily…
We can have a tendency to carb crave during the
winter months, so make you sure you stock up on
fruit and vegetables. A good balanced healthy
diet will help keep your energy levels up and
boost your mood.
Plan Ahead…
With Christmas well and truly over, it can seem
like there is nothing to look forward to, which
can make you feel a bit down in the dumps, so
plan ahead. Maybe book your summer holiday,
organise a catch up with friends or a family
day out….do something you enjoy and can look
forward to.
Socialise…
It’s been shown that socialising with friends and
family is good for mental health. So, get out
there and socialise socialise socialise…help beat
those winter blues. One great way of doing this is
getting together for Sunday lunch out, especially
as there is no washing up to do! Win Win!
Try Something New…
You are more likely to get out the house and
socialise if you have somewhere to be, especially
if it’s dark and miserable outside. So what
have you always wanted to do or try? Painting,
sketching…dancing? The possibilities are endless.
Get out there and do something different.
Still Feeling Low?…
If you still feel low and not quite yourself,
Cognitive Hypnotherapy could help you feel
more like you again. So get in touch, I offer a
free telephone consultation to see how I can
help you.
Historic
Night for
Turpin...
JANUARY 2019 | ISSUE #75
BY RALPH OATES
A series of articles which will feature boxing facts
from both the past to the present...
Sugar Ray Robinson was the
main man in boxing an excellent
fighter who was in every
sense a true artist in the ring.
Robinson was phenomenal
he could both box and punch
often making light work of
the many opponents who
stepped into the ring with him.
Realistically when taking a look
at the fighters around at the
time it appeared that few if any
looked capable of beating him.
When Randolph Turpin was
given a shot at the world
middleweight crown he looked
to have scant chance of getting
a victory over Robinson who
held the title. This was no
reflection on Turpin’s abilities
since he too was a good
fighter who knew his craft but
Robinson looked to be head
and shoulders above him.
On the night of the 10th July
1951 Robinson also a former
world welterweight king
entered the ring to cross
gloves with Turpin. The venue
for the contest was the Earls
Court Arena Kensington in
London. Robinson boasted
an outstanding record of 133
professional bouts with one loss
two draws and one no-contest.
Turpin came to the contest
with a resume of 43 paid bouts
with two defeats and one draw.
A good record but it dulled
when compared to Robinson’s
and it was noticeable that
the American had fought and
defeated a better calibre of
opponent than had his British
challenger. If Robinson was on
form he was more than capable
of scoring a victory inside the
distance either by a stoppage
or knockout. The outlook did
not look too bright for the
challenger.
However on the night Turpin
produced a performance which
stunned both Robinson and
the experts. The home fighter
was more than equal to the
American meeting him head
on in an exciting slugfest which
kept those in attendance on the
very edge of their seats. It was
possible that Robinson and his
management team had vastly
underrated the abilities of the
Briton. Those who witnessed
the fight could not believe what
they were watching, a British
fighter getting the better of an
outstanding American world
champion.
At the end of the fifteen round
contest Turpin was awarded
the points decision and was
amazingly the new world
middleweight champion. It
was a historic night for Turpin
who became the first British
born fighter to hold this title
since Bob Fitzsimmons who
won the championship on the
14 January 1891 when holder
Nonpareil Jack Dempsey retired
in round thirteen the venue
being the Olympic Club in New
Orleans.
This was a stunning result for
Turpin who was now a major
player in the sport his name
was now known worldwide
way beyond the UK. Shores. He
was the cream of the boxing
world. However Turpin did not
stay on the middle throne for
too long for he had to travel
across the Atlantic for a return
bout with Robinson. On the
12th September 1951 the pair
renewed their acquaintance at
the Polo Grounds in New York.
Turpin gave of his best but this
time Robinson came out on
top and hence stopped him in
the tenth stanza to regain the
title in a contest scheduled for
fifteen rounds. For Turpin the
party was over his time at the
top may have been brief but at
least he reached the top. There
was no disgrace for Turpin in
this defeat since Sugar Ray
Robinson was a genuine all
time great. Turpin could always
lay claim to the fact that he had
defeated Sugar Ray when he
was still in his prime and not
when he was passed his best.
Few fighters can make that
claim against Robinson.
REVIEW OF THE REFORMER CLASS AT:
Millie Dobie
Pilates
Rachel Ducker, gets a post Christmas reformer work out with
Millie Dobie at her Pilates studio at The Cut in Halesworth…
January has arrived and every year
it happens to me…
Post-Christmas guilt starts to burden my thoughts,
the sore feeling of over-indulgence lingers
throughout my body and usually I feel the regret
of one too many glasses of fizz over the festive
period… this year happens to be no different.
To be brutally honest, I am bored of running on
that treadmill that just doesn’t get you anywhere.
Making a pleasant change from the gym, I was
very excited to be invited along to attend Millie
Dobie’s Pilates reformer class, and trust me, a class
or two of reformer Pilates will have you in shape
quicker than you think possible. I have always
wanted to try Pilates, not the mat class, but the
real deal on the reformer machines.
Reformer Pilates is similar, yet very different to
mat based Pilates. It is done using the machine
and is generally more intense and more dynamic
than mat based Pilates as it adds resistance to the
Pilates exercises via the use of the springs, which
form part of the machine. A class on the reformer
is excellent to help with rehabilitation from injury
ensuring you gently stretch your muscles and avoid any
injuries, before moving onto a structure of exercises
designed to lengthen, strengthen and push you to change
your body shape. I was told to squeeze my ribs in and
scoop my abdominals, schooled on my posture, working
muscles I wasn’t even aware I owned!
It was challenging, both in terms of working my muscles
and also forcing myself to pay particular attention to how
every inch of my person was aligned, and having Millie
right their to coach me ensured I was doing it correctly.
Millie is a wonderful instructor, correcting your technique
sporting equipment stands and
many other lifestyle features
available on the day. The event
is being held
at Henham
Park, but has
been organised
independently
of the owners of
the estate.
The organisers
have announced
they are supporting mental
health charity, Norwich and
Central Norfolk Mind, and will
donate 10 per cent of profits
from the event to the charity as
well as encouraging participants
to raise money through their
individual run.
Henham Park Festival of
Running will combine three
race distances, a 10k trail run,
a 5k trail run and a 1k Fun Run
around the lake. All of the
courses will end up crossing
the finish line over the iconic
bridge. The course winds
through glades and past the
hall before crossing the tape
by the lake, where the main
festival base will be. There will
be prizes for winners in different
age categories, which will be
given out at the presentation
following the races and
accurately recorded through
chip timing. Unlike other races,
the event will be more than just
running with local musicians
and food stalls as well as a
bar. Participants are invited to
bring their families too as the
1k Fun Run around the lake will
take place after the 10k and 5k
races have finished. Dogs are
also allowed in the main festival
base but cannot accompany
participants on their run.
Marketing Coordinator, Gareth
Samuel, said: “I grew up just
down the road and obviously
it’s a beautiful part of the world
where we are lucky to live.
So when we went to Latitude
Festival earlier this year we
realised the park is a particularly
stunning place to hold a running
event. We also wanted to add a
bit more to the races, like music
and food stalls, to keep people
entertained and help maintain
that great feeling you get when
you finish.”
Registrations are now open for
this event and participants have
the opportunity to purchase a
technical running t-shirt and
add 1k Fun Run entries to their
orders at the same time. Visit
MOUNTAIN
POSE
(tah -DAHS-anna)
Benefits
Improves posture
Strengthens thighs, knees, and ankles
Firms abdomen and buttocks
Relieves sciatica
Reduces flat feet
Cautions:
Headache, Insomnia, Low blood pressure.
How to try the pose:
1. Stand with the bases of your big toes touching,
heels slightly apart (so that your second toes are
parallel). Lift and spread your toes and the balls of
your feet, then lay them softly down on the floor.
Rock back and forth and side to side. Gradually
reduce this swaying to a standstill, with your
weight balanced evenly on the feet.
2. Firm your thigh muscles and lift the knee
caps, without hardening your lower belly. Lift the
inner ankles to strengthen the inner arches, then
imagine a line of energy all the way up along
your inner thighs to your groins, and from there
through the core of your torso, neck, and head,
and out through the crown of your head. Turn
the upper thighs slightly inward. Lengthen your
tailbone toward the floor and lift the pubis toward
the navel.
3. Press your shoulder blades into your back,
then widen them across and release them down
your back. Without pushing your lower front
ribs forward, lift the top of your sternum straight
toward the ceiling. Widen your collarbones. Hang
your arms beside the torso.
4. Balance the crown of your head directly over
the center of your pelvis, with the underside of
your chin parallel to the floor, throat soft, and the
tongue wide and flat on the floor of your mouth.
Soften your eyes.
5. Tadasana is usually the starting position for
all the standing poses. But it’s useful to practice
Tadasana as a pose in itself. Stay in the pose for
30 seconds to 1 minute, breathing easily.
Beginner’s Tip:
You can improve your balance in this pose by
standing with your inner feet slightly apart,
anywhere from 3 to 5 inches.
Deepen the Pose:
You can challenge your balance by practicing
this pose with your eyes closed. Learn to balance
without any reference to the outer environment.
Please take care in all poses, if unsure please
Looking at the
Wine Label
A wine label is a key to what is in the bottle. It can indicate the grape
or grapes used, a region it comes from and other characteristics.
the wine itself on the label. Similarly, a bright
colourful label can imply a simpler wine.
Essential elements on the label...
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
If you don’t know the wine from previous
experience, it is the only clue as to what you
are buying.
Three questions spring to mind from this.
Should I buy it ? Should I drink it ? and what
does it taste like ?
Sometimes a classic, elegant design such as
produced by a Bordeaux winemaker implies a
serious wine with stature. However, with these
wines there is very little information about
What makes one wine different from another?
There are about 4 reasons why this is so. The
grape variety is certainly one of the most
important, being the main constant in the
wine and which can lead to the particular
flavour and bouquet. The soil being the other
constant to consider and it becomes useful
to get to know these two in time. White
Burgundy uses the Chardonnay grape and is
mostly on limestone soil. Cru Beaujolais is the
Gamay grape and is on granite soil.
Often the grape name is used with the place
named on a label eg Riesling d’Alsace.
The Climate is a predominant factor in wine
style and characteristics. Burgundy in North
52

FOOD & DRINK
JANUARY 2018 JANUARY | ISSUE 2019 #75 | ISSUE | FOOD #75 & DRINK
France has a cool climate than the Pay D’Oc
in south France. The more northern climates
impart more acidity in the wine and the
southern have less acidity but are more full
bodied and with sweeter grapes can generate
more alcohol. Furthermore, the further north
or south the greater the variation in climate
and the greater variation in high quality
wine compared to insipid wine. In these
instances the date of the vintage is of prime
importance.
The other main factor is the
Winemakers themselves...
Areas like Burgundy have multiple
sharing of particular vineyard
sites and thus each winemaker
using his share could make
a wine a little different to
another adjacent owner. So
important then that if you
find a wine you particularly
like, make a careful note of all
the details on it especially the
owner and /or winemaker
Brand names somewhat confuse the
issue unless you can trace the origins of the
wine. The term Buyers own Brand comes into
play where a made up name can be shown on
the label. Often the word Chateau is used to
enhance the appearance of the label but often
it would show a large house only and has no
relation to a real Chateau.
Other expressions are shown on labels to
further enhance its sales potential so beware
of the words Reserve, Grand Cru, Cru Classe
etc. They can be genuine or made up for
saleability.
Legal Classification...
In the EU there is a legal requirement that
all Quality wine should be designated under
two categories Protected Designation of
Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical
Indication(PGI) These are in use now and
stand for what they say. Many of the old terms
are still used and some are as follows:-
PDO’s
France - AOC - Appellation d’ Origine
Controlee
Italy - DOC - Denominazione de
Origen
Spain - DO -
Denominacion de Origen
Germany - Pradikatswein,
Qualitatswein
PGI’s
France - Vin de pays
Italy - IGT - Indicazione Geografica
Tipica
Spain - Vina de la Tierra
Germany - Landwein
As said before the label is intended to show
what is in the bottle but also is a selling point
for the maker. It can be helpful or confusing.
If the label is cheap then it could indicate that
the wine inside is not of high quality. Also if it
is gawdy and intrusive on the eye it could also
be overpromoted for selling quickly.
Conclusions...
The only sure way to pick a wine by the label is maybe get some advice or research the wine.
This is not always practical while perusing the shelves but the longer term rewards of learning
about the wine can be beneficial. Happy drinking and a happy wine drinking New Year!
Method
• Put the dried mushrooms in a heatproof
jug, cover with 500ml boiling water and
set aside. Meanwhile, heat 1 tbsp oil in a
deep, wide frying pan and fry the chestnut
mushrooms over a high heat for 4-5 mins
until deep brown. Remove and set aside.
A healthy hearty meal...
• Add the remaining 1/2 tbsp oil to the pan
and fry the onions and garlic over a medium
heat for 6-8 mins until soft.
Risotto is a wonderfully versatile dish
– this gluten- and meat-free version
channels the nutty flavours of a classic
Italian porcini mushroom risotto but with
a tasty Greek feta twist.
Ready in under an hour or freezable for a
busy weeknight, it’s the perfect midweek
dinner for two.
Ingredients
• Strain the dried mushrooms, reserving the
liquid, then roughly chop and add to the
pan. Add the rice and stir well. Stir in the
wine and cook until the rice has absorbed it.
Return the chestnut mushrooms to the pan
then add the reserved mushroom liquid, a
ladle at a time, stirring constantly. Wait until
the rice has absorbed most of the liquid
before adding more. Repeat until you’ve
used all the liquid – this should take 20-25
mins.
• 15g dried porcini mushrooms
• 1/2 tbsp olive oil
• 150g pack chestnut mushrooms, sliced
• Once the rice is tender but with a little
bite, season to taste. Stir through the
spinach leaves until wilted. Divide between
2 plates and top with the feta.
• 1 small onion, finely diced
• 1 garlic clove, crushed
• 140g arborio rice
• 75ml white wine
• 100g baby spinach
• 50g feta, crumbled
A NIGHT AT
THE PIGS
By Rachel Ducker
Just ten minutes shy of the
charming town of Holt in
Norfolk, you will find The Pigs,
Edgefield, offering comforting
local food and luxury
accommodation - with a twist!
This 17th Century country pub is full of charm
and character and is one of
the Norfolk Passport brands
alongside Byfords of Holt
and The Assembly House,
Norwich.
The Pigs have created more
than just your average B&B, here is a place to
eat, sleep, spa and repeat, in fact, you’ll feel
like a pig in muck when you stay at The Pigs.
First Impressions...
From the moment you enter through the
grand porch you’re flanked by Hogarthian
caricatures; this is a quirky pub. There’s
‘piggy’ references throughout from stag-like
pigs’ heads mounted on the walls, right down
to the little plastic pig character on your room
key. You can even leave with a pack of Free-
Range Eggs – how local can you get? A sign
for things to come.
Who needs a room with a view?…
On a dull, drizzly afternoon, I checked
into room 19, this wasn’t just any room... it
was a private spa suite and it came complete
with its own little luxuries including a private
sauna and steam room. The warmth of the
rustic wooden walls instantly lifted me; it felt
as if I were in a log cabin and I could have
been anywhere in the world.
I then discovered I had my own courtyard
garden area with a fire pit, complimentary
logs and marshmallows, perfect for those
looking for a romantic break away. Not to
fear, if things become too hot to handle, there
is an outdoor bucket shower, or for those
like me who dislike the cold you may prefer
the warm indoor drench shower, this room is
unforgettable.
For those looking for a little more, The Pigs
has its own spa garden with a hot tub you
can book during your stay, a tempting range
of treatments, and a spa bar where you can
pick personalised products for your spa stay.
There’s little need to venture out!
Little Extras...
In the corridor leading to the rooms you
will find a small bar stocked with drinks,
sweets, biscuits, more marshmallows,
skewers, scented petals for the bath and
cranberry scented oil for the saunas.
Alongside it there is a price list and the
“Honesty Pig”.
If you really want a treat “The Wallow” is
the latest addition to The Pigs. With a huge
square footage there’s plenty of space for the
in-room experiences including sauna, stream
room, in-room dining and an exclusive hot tub
deck set in a secluded garden, but book now,
as at present, it’s fully booked into
early 2019!
The Bar &
Restaurant…
The bar is rustic, with
dark wooden beams and
a traditional bar serving
real ales and homemade
cordials.
The restaurant uses local
ingredients from Norfolk wherever
possible and if I were a meat-eater;
I think I would have been in heaven.
Luckily, there was plenty of choice for me,
the vegetarian. The Pigs kitchen fields a
fortnightly menu with the best fresh, seasonal
ingredients.
To start, I ordered the Norfolk
tapas, famously referred to as
‘Iffits’. The Wild Mushroom and
Tarragon Terrine with chestnut
butter toast was packed full
of flavour, along with Roasted
Cauliflower and Cashew nuts.
I also sampled the Sweetcorn
Fritters, which I must say, was
my favourite little ‘Iffit’.
For the main event I plumped for the
‘Pub made Veggie Burger’, the vegetable
patty was sandwiched in-between a lightly
toasted and homemade seeded bun, coated
with fresh tomato and dappled cheese with
the chunkiest chips and ‘Edgefield slaw’.
The verdict…
Romantic self-contained spa rooms and luxury
family suites makes The Pigs perfect for couples
and families alike.
The burger was a great meat substitute, but
the hand-cut chips definitely stole the show.
Finally, and yes it was a little piggish, I
treated myself to the ‘Dark Chocolate
Torte’ with Blackberry Compote and after
that, this little piggy was done.
You won’t get bored with a piggy play area
and there’s even a pooch friendly menu if your
child is of the four-legged kind! Whether you’re
looking for a luxurious bolt hole after a day
or a full on pamper session in a charming
Method
1. Put the potatoes in a pan of cold
salted water and slowly bring to the boil,
then reduce the heat and simmer for 5
minutes.
2. Turn off the heat and leave the
potatoes in the hot water for 15 minutes
so that they are half cooked. Drain and
peel.
A special Veganuary Recipe...
A sure-fire hit for breakfast, brunch or
lunch. You can cook the beetroot first,
but using it raw lends the röstis a nice bit
of bite. If you have any leftover cooked
beetroot or potato these would work fine
too, or swap the beetroot for parsnip,
celeriac or squash.
Ingredients
• 2 large potatoes
• 1 large beetroot, peeled
• 1 small red onion
• 5cm piece of horseradish, peeled or 1 tsp
grated horseradish from a jar
• 1 large garlic clove
• Small bunch of dill, roughly chopped
• Small bunch of tarragon, roughly chopped
• Small bunch of parsley, roughly chopped
• 1 tbsp plain flour (or rice flour to make it
gluten free)
• Sunflower oil, for frying
• Salt and black pepper
3. Coarsely grate the potatoes, beetroot
and onion into a large bowl. Finely grate
the horseradish into the same bowl.
4. Bash the garlic into a fine paste using
a pestle and mortar, or crush in a garlic
crusher, then add it to the bowl with
the herbs. Season with salt and pepper,
sprinkle over the flour and mix well.
5. Heat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5. Shape
the veg mix into four burger-sized
patties. They should hold together well,
but add a bit more flour if not.
6. Heat a good slug of oil in a non-stick
frying pan and fry the röstis until golden
brown on each side (don’t be tempted to
flip them more than once or move them
much).
7. Transfer to a baking tray and finish
cooking in the oven for 15 minutes, until
crisp and cooked through.
SERVING IDEAS:
Use the same mix to make mini patties
and serve as fancy hash browns with a full
English breakfast. Top with wilted spinach
or chard.
JESS GLYNNE
Jess Glynne has announced dates as part of Forest Live 2019, the summer concert
series promoted by the Forestry Commission.
In 2014 a guest spot on Clean Bandit’s
omnipresent pop-house smash ‘Rather Be’
brought Jess Glynne to prominence and
with her debut album ‘I Cry When I Laugh’
the following year, she delivered one of the
defining British pop records of the era.
At the time of writing it has been a chart
staple for 170 weeks with triple platinum
sales. Her powerhouse vocal
and fearless delivery have
captured so many under her
spell across a succession
of hit singles such as ‘Right
Here’, ‘Real Love’, ‘Hold
My Hand’ and ‘Don’t Be So
Hard On Yourself’. Glynne’s
second studio album,
Always In Between (2018)
also debuted at Number
1 in the UK. Success
continues with the singles
‘All I Am’ and ‘I’ll Be There’, a seventh top
spot giving Jess Glynne the record for most
Number 1 singles scored by a British female
solo artist.
Forest Live is a major outdoor live music
series held every summer by Forestry
Commission England in seven beautiful
forests. Over 1.75 million people have
attended a forest gig in the last eighteen
years. With everything required for a great
night out, including good food and drink,
the concerts are renowned for their informal
and relaxed atmosphere set to a spectacular
forest backdrop. Money raised from ticket
sales helps to look after the nation’s forests
sustainably, for people to enjoy and wildlife
to thrive.
Commenting on the shows Jess Glynne said
“I do hope you can join me in the Summer as
JANUARY JANUARY 2019 | 2019 ISSUE | ISSUE #75 | #75 LIFESTYLE
Habits
FOR KEEPS
So it’s a New Year and of
course a new you. That’s
quite a lot of pressure
though BY RUBY isn’t REEDit?
Well how about
an improved you?
Doesn’t sound quite
as daunting does it?
Also Improving is a constant
goal not a high bar that must
be reached- i.e. no failing
forecast whatsoever.
This year why not incorporate
some healthy habits to your
lifestyle. Once we get in the
swing of them, they are easy
to do when we need a boost.
I have three that help day to
day living, very easy to do and
you’ll notice the difference.
DRINK UP
No, not the naughty kind. But a glass of water. Even
when you think you don’t need one. A lot of us (guilty
as they come myself) don’t drink enough water and
there really is no substitute. Sorry if its not your
favourite beverage (again me too) but its what we
need. Try an extra glass a few times a day. What
benefits did I find? It curbed hunger and ah yeah I
haven’t had a headache for a while! Seems rather
worth it don’t you think?
WALK IT OFF
It can be hard to fit in an appropriate amount of
exercise in your standard week. Office hours can
be long and the day can run away. However even
a 20-minute walk can boost your mood. What do
you normally do on your lunch break, or after tea?
Fresh air is a must, to clear your head and stretch
78

JANUARY JANUARY 2019 | 2019 ISSUE | ISSUE #75 | #75 LIFESTYLE
your legs. A stroll around
is great thinking time and
can prepare you for what’s
next- but it’s also fine if you
want to just enjoy a blank
mind!
A LITTLE SOMETHING
NICE
Nice things come in many
different forms. Whether
it’s taking 5 minutes to go
and chat to your colleague,
or to call your mum for
a catch up. Something
nice makes us feel good.
Go out of your way to do
something extra.
Cheer someone up, check
in, make someone’s day
and make your own!
Nothing bad ever came from being
nice and a compliment or needed
encouragement goes a long way.
If there’s any other habits you think
you should get into- go for it. It’s not
about being perfect, its about making
an improvement that results in a better
outcome for yourself. It can work the
other way too.
That habit you know you should kick. Try
doing it that little bit less - and remember
the benefits when you do.
the criticisms of cloud storage is that
JANUARY JANUARY 2019 | ISSUE 2019 | #75 ISSUE | #75 HISTORY
Curl
Brothers...
Henley, Edward and Jacob
Curl came from East Winch
and in 1860 travelled to
Norwich to become partners
with Arthur Bunting’s
drapery business Buntings
which stood where Marks and
Spencer’s stands today on St
Stephens and Rampant Horse
Street.
It was not long before they
left Buntings and along with
brothers Ernest, Harry and
Percy purchased The Rampant
Horse Inn opposite which at the
time was one of the oldest inns
in Norwich and turned it into
the Curl Brothers department
store and over the years more
properties were added and
by the start of the 1920s the
company owned 51,000 square
feet along with an exclusive
restaurant where for the sum
of two shillings and sixpence
you could dine on six courses.
The roof would have been
made from glass and the shop
front would have been lit up by
eleven Ediswan lamps with 200
candlepower housed in wrought
iron brackets.
Curl Brothers Pottergate Street
factory manufactured men and
boys clothing with deliveries on
a daily basis to over 16 counties
within the UK.
It soon became known as the
largest department store in
Norfolk. An escalator and air
conditioning system which at
the time was something out of
the ordinary were installed along
with lifts and accommodation
for over 400 staff and welfare
officers. This was at the time a
glimpse into the future.
Staff were trained to be able
to show the customer how to
use the abundance of products,
something that was very unusual
in England and this would have
been the start of what we know
as do-it-yourself.
The staff would have been
expected to live on the premises
and if you were an apprentice
you would have been expected
to have served at least two years
before you were permitted to
speak to the customers.
April 1942 during the Baedeker
raids of World War II Curl
Brothers department store along
with Buntings, Woolworth and
R G Pitch sports shop were
bombed by two 250kg bombs.
Fellow department store Jarrold
had talks with the brothers and
offered them the use of their
first floor before Norwich Union
offered them a property on
Westlegate.
Long after the war ended and
with the original Curl Brothers
building being known as the
giant hole in Norwich developers
moved in to start rebuilding in
1953 and three years later a new
building with 97,000 square
feet opened with entrances in
Rampant Horse Street, Red Lion
Street, Orford Place and Brigg
Street.
During the 1960s the
department store was
purchased by Debenhams who
continued to use the name Curl
Brothers until the 1970s when it
became known as Debenhams
even though for years it was still
known as Curl Brothers which
revokes memories of when John
Lewis took over Bonds and
today people in Norwich still call
it Bonds.
Henley Curl became Sheriff of
Norwich, Justice of the Peace
for the City and a Trustee for
many charitable trusts.
Here at Bounce Magazine
we love to support our
new local businesses,
so this month we would
like to introduce Blush &
Glow, new to Southwold’s
high street, and here is
salon owner Chelsey to
tell you all about her new
venture...
“As I sit here trying to think of
a way to write about myself
I suddenly feel extremely
vein, I mean, who wants to
hear about me? However, I’ve
recently opened a business,
which I’m very
proud of so I
guess I have
to bite the
bullet and
share my
little story.
My name
is Chelsey
and I am the
owner of Blush
& Glow, a luxury
boutique-style beauty salon
located in Southwold.
I have been
in the beauty
industry for
eight years,
briefly taking
a break to become an
archaeologist… the obvious
natural progression from
beauty therapy, right? Despite
a great six months digging
up the past, more specifically,
Saxon and Roman artefacts
and farmsteads, I decided
to turn my attention back to
beauty. Though this time, the
business side of things.
A bit of travelling, veryalmost-breakdown-inducing
stress, and gallons of paint
later, Blush & Glow is
open for business! The
brand image just
came naturally whilst
designing the space;
fresh, elegant,
and clean whilst
remaining cosy and
utterly relaxing.
Our treatments and
product range reflect our
philosophy of embracing
natural beauty, not covering
it up. We use REN Skincare
for all of our blissful face and
body treatments (you should
google them if you don’t
know about them already),
and the award-winning brand
‘Jessica’ to keep fingers and
toes in tip-top shape.
Because I can’t wait for
everybody to come for some
well-deserved pampering in
our beautiful salon, simply
quote ‘bounce magazine’
when booking for 10% off.
(I’d just like to add that
none of this would have
been possible without the
incredible support I’ve had
from my family and loved
ones)”.
JANUARY 2019 | ISSUE #75
It’s fine to lower your A.G.E.’s... - and look
younger, feel fitter...
Welcome to the New Year! I
guess there’s a great number of
you who have made resolutions
relating to health and fitness.
In general, we are so much more
conscious of these things than a
generation ago. But are we still getting
our priorities right?
We scrutinise packaging for sulphates,
aluminium and the much maligned
parabens.
and causing chronic inflammation.
These newly formed protein/sugar
compounds are called Advanced
Glycation End products.
They also form in foods and diet and
food prep is the biggest contributor of
AGEs.
When you consume too many AGEs,
or too many form spontaneously, your
body can’t keep up with eliminating
them.
But if you are truly looking for better
skin, and better health, look to your
diet first, and it’s not all about calories.
Glycation is the word you need to know
and understand.
The chemistry is complex but basically
it’s the unnatural binding of sugar
molecules to proteins – and fats - which
has the effect of altering body tissue
While low levels are generally
acceptable, and your body uses
weapons such as antioxidants, high
levels have been shown to cause
oxidative stress and inflammation
leading to diseases, such as diabetes,
heart disease, kidney failure and
Alzheimer’s.
Most visible is the mutation of collagen,
86

JANUARY 2019 | ISSUE #75
healthy, you may consume an unhealthy
amount of harmful AGEs just because of
the way your food is cooked.
To reduce your AGE’s cook with moist
heat, such as steaming, at lower
temperatures and for shorter periods of
time.
Follow a diet full of colourful fruits,
vegetables, herbs and spices to ramp up
your natural antioxidants.
Try oat or almond milks substitutes for
a change.
our essential skin scaffolding.
Our modern diet with a surplus of both
sugar and animal protein is greatly to
blame for the increasing level of AGE
related illness.
Cut down or cut out your animal
products and you are on your way to a
life where your age is just a number and
not a barrier to healthy living.
How we cook too, with dry heat such
as grilling, roasting, baking, frying. In
fact, everything you would find in your
delicious burger.
Because certain foods especially red
meats and dairy, high in both fat and
protein, are more susceptible to AGE
formation during cooking.
So even if your diet appears reasonably
HAIR & BEAUTY
JANUARY 2019 JANUARY | ISSUE 2019 #75 | | ISSUE HAIR #75 & BEAUTY
January Detox with SK...
Welcome 2019! New Year, New Start is a
mantra many of us start the year with.
However, January is also unfortunately known
as the most depressing month of the year. It’s
not hard to figure out why – the bank balance is
suffering thanks to all those generous Christmas
gifts, resolutions made on December 31 st are
hanging by a thread and of course, it’s cold, dark,
and dreary outside. But not to fear,
SK have some treatment ideas which
can detox the body and de-clutter the
mind for a more focused and healthier
2019.
SHINE SOME LIGHT
Those who suffer with SAD (Seasonal
Affective disorder) will know this
feeling all too well. Using SK’s Light
Therapy Booth helps improve the symptoms
and improves mood. Emitting 4 different types
of light: UVA, UVB, Blue Light Therapy, and most
importantly; Red Light Therapy, the booth is
beneficial in providing the body with enough
visible light to decrease feelings of lethargy and
fatigue by lowering the level of melatonin in the
body. As a result, Red Light Therapy can help treat
SAD, as it is thought to affect brain chemicals
linked to mood and sleep.
DETOX FROM THE SEA
A remarkable treatment for body contouring, the
Pevonia Detox Seaweed Wrap features a blend of
the finest seaweed, harvested of the French coast
of Brittany which is renowned for its therapeutic
properties. This effective treatment detoxifies
and re-mineralises dry, depleted skin whilst the
body is covered with warm micronised Seaweed
and gently wrapped. As stress and toxins are
eliminated, the entire body is replenished with
vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
CELLULITE-BUSTING COFFEE
Known to be highly-effective at sliming and toning,
the Pevonia Cellulite Smoothing Green Coffee
Body Wrap is a cutting-edge treatment aimed at
stimulating the body’s ability to break
down fat. It is then transformed into
Q&A
Vanity Eight
Vanity Eight is a new beauty salon based on
Risbygate Street in the heart of Bury St Edmunds...
We catch up with co-owner
Bonny Howes about the new
launch...
Bonny, tell us a little about yourself and
your background?
My business partner Joni and I have been
friends for a long time - I’ve been one of
her clients for years! We’re both single
mums, trying to juggle bringing up our
girls and working full time.
We started chatting about opening a
salon last year and found we shared
so many ideas. So here we are! My
background is in marketing and Joni is
at Vanity Eight no two stations are the
same, the furniture is vintage or upcycled,
and we want clients to feel this
is a social space - bring your friends for
a coffee too, and leave feeling relaxed,
glam and pampered.
Q: What products do you use / stock?
We use Maria Nila hair products which
are 100% vegan, sulphate and paraben
free.
the one with all the industry experience
so together we make a great team.
Q: Can you give us more information
about your new salon?
At Vanity Eight we offer the full range
of hair and beauty services, so you can
come in and get a beautiful ombré and
leave with smooth legs, perfect nails and
brows too!
We also offer facial aesthetics and skin
treatments such as micro needling, as
well as micro blading, plus of course lash
extensions. There are also professional
makeup artists on hand for bridal
consultations or any special occasion.
Q: What makes your salon different?
We wanted to create a ‘one stop shop’
for all hair and beauty needs - but one
that reflects the individuality and even
quirkiness of the clients who come here.
There are so many salons where you
feel like you’re on a conveyor belt, but
Q: Do you have any exciting new year
offers for our readers?
As a special offer for Bounce readers
New Year NEW RESOLUTION
A New Year’s resolution to make a difference…
This year, why not make a resolution that
really makes a difference, how about to
use more beauty products that are animal
friendly? You can find new favourites at the
same time as helping animals.
Rosina’s Lotions and Potions products are not
only animal friendly, but they do not
test them on animals and also use
beeswax from a farm, helping to
keep bees alive.
Their products are all natural
with a beautiful girly vintage
twist, pretty enough to display
with pride and ethically sourced.
This Works® is another amazing
company that do not test on animals. I have
raved about their sleep spray and in transit
camera close up cream before and I still love
them. After all sleep is so important to your
beauty regime as well as health.
Unicorn Cosmetics have some of the best
vegan friendly/cruelty free make up brushes.
They are absolutely stunning and very on
trend! Check out their other products too, you
won’t be disappointed.
Kat Von D has recently spoken our about
her products being vegan friendly, free from
animal cruelty and not testing on animals. The
make up is divine!
The liquid lipsticks are a new favourite
of mine. The colours are extreme and
powerful.
Perfect for your new look in a New
Year, enhance your natural beauty
without harming any animals and do
your bit.
Happy new year and all the best for 2019!
Rosie’s
Hair, Beauty & Make-Up
Rachel Ducker visited Rosie’s Norwich salon, to experience the
perfect pamper package for the New Year…
Rosie’s, Hair Beauty & Make-Up
Studio is located in the historic
Norwich Lanes on Bedford Street,
opposite Bang & Olufsen…
On this particular day, it was cold, the grey skies
were the only thing in sight. I had that anticlimactic
feeling, the one you get when Christmas is over, so
I couldn’t wait to jump in the car and head on over
to Rosie’s for a proper pamper session.
The team at Rosie’s pride themselves in offering
an extensive range of beauty treatments. Whether
it be a regular brow shape or a fresh new hair
colour and restyle. They also offer private salon
hire and packages for groups including birthday’s,
corporate events, hen do’s and bridal parties.
I was greeted with a beaming smile from my
designated beauty therapist Hayley. Coat taken
and hung, I was escorted to my beauty chamber.
The large salon features two nail bars, a
Dermalogica skin bar, Make-Up section with
Hollywood light surround, Hairdressing sections
with separate back wash feature, a quiet treatment
room area used for facials, waxing and lashes plus
a new bespoke HD Brow bar.
First up... time for tinting. After passing my patch
test, prior to my appointment, I laid still whilst
Hayley’s steady hands, tinted my brows and once
complete a brow wax… not as painful as you might
think!
This was only the start of my pampering session,
it was then time to get those nails looking good
enough for 2019. At this point I usually start to panic… what
colour nail polish would I choose? Today was a day for dark
red sparkles, and as I was lead to my throne (or at least
it felt like one) for the next hour as I embarked upon my
pedicure, then followed by a manicure.
Finally, the treatment I had been a little bit excited about.
I always see it on TV shows such as ‘Made In Chelsea’ but I
have never been to a blow dry bar before. So I was passed
over to stylist Cassie who washed and blow dried my hair
leaving me with a volumed head of curls.
You would be correct in thinking that I left feeling like a
complete superstar… ready to take on the world once more.
So if you feel like you need a little TLC after Christmas, or if
you want to give the lady in your life a little bit of treat on
Valentines Day, get in touch.
New Year, New You...
We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘New Year,
New You’. It arrives every January filled
with preconceptions that we’re hitting
the gym and changing our diet, striving
for a bikini body by June.
The first few weeks are fine, filled with renewed
enthusiasm, proud of our gym membership and
loving our new trainers and yoga pants that make
our bum look good!
Then February hits and we’re reaching for the
chocolate, wondering why we attempted such big
goals. What about trying a different approach?
Instead of trying to change ourselves completely,
consider setting a resolution to be KIND to
yourself? It sounds like an unusual concept, we
believe we are kind to ourselves more than we
really are. I imagine we’re all guilty of burning the
candle at both ends.
Furthering our careers while keeping an active
social life or juggling family life and keeping a tidy
house.
Sometimes being kind to yourself means saying
no. An act of self love could be taking a relaxing
bath, reading a book, saying no to overtime
because you really do need to rest.
Staying in on a weekend and pampering yourself
or encouraging yourself to go out and do
something fun. Whatever it is that you choose,
DO NOT feel guilty for it. Embrace the feeling and
recharge your batteries.
96

HAIR & BEAUTY
JANUARY 2019 | ISSUE #75
Many focus new year resolutions on LOOKING good, and
that’s ok. The key to looking good is FEELING good. When
you feel good you glow and when you’re glowing from the
inside you’re skin will look awesome too. These aren’t big
life changing resolutions, it’s about the small things you do
each day.
Here are our top resolutions to keep you looking fabulous
for 2019.
#1 Remove make up every night
Hold your hand up if this is you. Yes, even my hand went
up, it’s something that is on my list too. By removing our
make up every night we allow our skin to breath and repair
itself. It’s also a way to take a couple of minutes to yourself
to wind down before you sleep.
#2 Listen to my skin
Our skin changes as do the seasons and we need to listen
to our skin when it cries out and nourish it with the correct
ingredients.
#3 I will stop popping my spots!
We all get pleasure in popping a spot, but it’s not good for
our skin. It opens us up to infection, potential scarring or
damaging the skin. I know it’s hard to resist but be patient,
try purifying treatments and your skin will thank you for it.
#6 Drink plenty of water
This is great for your general health too.
Mixed with a good nights sleep you’ll notice
an improvement in your skin very quickly if
you keep this up every day. If you’re not a
fan of plain water try adding lemon or a few
slices of your favourite fruit.
#7 Practice mindfulness
Mindfulness has been a hot topic and the
acknowledgement that our mental and
emotional state of mind affects the physical
is more widely accepted. Take time out and
get to know you, you may want to meditate,
do yoga, you may even choose to put on a
face mask and just chill with your thoughts
and some relaxing music. Whatever you
choose it’s important to take time for you.
What are your resolutions? Keep them
realistic and most of all achievable.
Need advice?
Contact us on info@funkyskincare.com and
we will be happy to offer you advice and
recommendations of which products are
right for you. Written by Sarah Gare.
#4 Exfoliate my skin
Aim to exfoliate a couple of times a week, face and body.
The act of exfoliating removes dead skin and kick starts
the skin cell regeneration process. By regularly exfoliating
you’ll find that applying fake tan goes on better and your
make-up will glide on beautifully.
#5 Get enough sleep
We all get by on varying hours of sleep. They say 7-8
hours is optimal to function efficiently throughout the day.
Sleep gives our body chance to recharge and repair itself
and the amount of sleep we get each night affects the way
we feel both mentally and physically the next day.
So if you want to glow from the inside out... get a good
night’s sleep.
JANUARY JANUARY 2019 | ISSUE 2019 | #75 ISSUE | #75 FROM THE JAM
FROM THE JAM
“Blown away by this band- you must see them if you can!” -
Jeremy Vine, BBC Radio 2
From The Jam bring their “All Mod
Cons - 40th Anniversary Tour” to
The Apex, Bury St Edmunds on 17 th
January & 11 th April 2019.
From the Jam is comprised of legendary
former ‘The Jam’ bassist Bruce Foxton,
vocalist & guitarist Russell Hastings, drummer
Mike Randon, and Andy
Fairclough on Hammond
and piano. The band will be
touring the UK, celebrating
the 40th Anniversary of The
Jam’s 3rd studio album, All
Mod Cons playing it in its
entirety.
As well as classics such as
‘Down in The Tube Station
at Midnight’ and ‘A Bomb in
Wardour Street’ the band
are also excited about playing ‘Billy Hunt’, ‘Mr
Clean’ and the ‘The Butterfly Collector’, which
only featured on the US release of All Mod
Cons originally.
Over the past 11 years From the Jam have
toured relentlessly, having played almost 1000
headline shows in the UK since their inception
in 2007.
and “sounding dynamic as ever” by the Daily
Record.
“The energy in rehearsals is great and we’re
really looking forward to getting back on the
road!” says Foxton.
In 2007 Russell Hastings was fronting ‘The
Gift’ (which featured Rick Buckler) when he
was joined on stage by Bruce
Foxton (who was touring with
Casbah Club) for a ‘one off’
performance. This performance
sparked the genesis of From
The Jam, and an enduring
partnership between Foxton &
Hastings.
Off-stage Foxton and Hastings
wrote the album, ‘Back In The
Room’ released in 2012, which
received critical acclaim and
solidified Foxton & Hastings as an excellent
and contemporary song writing duo.
They then returned to the studio in 2016 to
record and release ‘Smash The Clock’, which
reached number 31 in the UK charts. The
album also entered the independent album
chart at number 4, whilst the vinyl edition
entered the vinyl chart at number 7.
Throughout this time, they’ve gained a
reputation for the kind of incendiary live
performances that sealed the reputation of
The Jam all those years ago, being described
as “incredibly exciting” by the Daily Mirror
To celebrate 10 years since From The Jam
formed , Bruce Foxton and Russell Hastings
released From ‘The Jam Live!’, featuring
songs performed at various venues across
the UK.
January
THE START OF THE YEAR
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : Now’s a great time to prune
currants and gooseberries - especially new
bushes or cordons.
In January, your garden could
need protecting from frosts,
gale-force winds and heavy rain.
General
Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for
damage and consider moving plants to sunnier
positions to maximize light.
Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, food is scarce
for them over winter.
You can also start planning next year’s vegetable
plot.
Fruit
• Plant bare-root trees and bushes, as long as the soil
isn’t frozen.
Vegetables
• Sow broad beans in pots in mild areas, placing
them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.
• Sow seed indoors for early crops eg: lettuces,
summer brassicas (e.g. cabbages and cauliflowers),
spinach, salad onions and turnips.
• Sow onion seed in a heated propagator.
NEW YEAR, NEW YOU...
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
By now you’re potentially
disgusted by the volume of
Quality Street that you’ve
consumed, I know I am... again!
There are still a few mince pies knocking
about and I’ll be having Turkey and Boxing
Day ham sandwiches at work for a few
more days yet but thoughts turn to another
action-packed year and a better physical
condition would help.
Don’t beat yourself up about a festive season
excess, it’s not a bad thing, far from it,
Christmas is the time for merriment, the clue
is in the name Merry Christmas.
Life is all about balance, so why not make
2019 your year to work on a few things,
perhaps consider health and fitness so you can
head into Christmas this year guilt free?
Some of you may have already signed up to
a new gym as part of a New Year resolution
but for most that exuberance is short
lived, statistics show that 14% of January
registrations disappear by the following month
and a whopping 80% don’t make it past 5
months.
Whilst the stats are shocking they’re not that
surprising, unless you’ve got will power in
abundance the energy to maintain a strict gym
attending schedule, especially in these bleak
winter months, can fade promptly.
Then there’s the workout, you’ve taken a few
moves from the latest Men’s / Women’s Health
whilst also studying Instagram to ensure
112

JANUARY 2019 | ISSUE #75
SPORT
you won’t do anything that’ll land you in the
#gymfail category but unless you’re a strength
and conditioning coach that sequence won’t
be efficient and you’ll so get bored with it and
won’t have the knowledge to change it up
effectively.
“So Action Man, what’s the answer?” I hear you
ask. Well folks the best way to start chipping
away at the caramel barrel (the Cadbury’s
Roses sweet, not my new nickname), is to get
some instructor led training, this will ensure
you get a varied and effective regime coupled
with the encouragement and motivation of a
trainer and class mates.
I completely understand that a brand new
gym, that’s open 24 hours a day and costs just
a tenner a month is appealing but do you want
to be a statistic? Or do something about your
vital statistics?
Instructor led training can come in many forms
and there’s bound to be something that’ll suit
you. Regular Bounce readers will have seen
many an Action Man escapade that might
have resonated with you, well why not give it
a go! At 36 and 5’ 5.5” (yes that half an inch is
important)! I’m no physical specimen, if I can
do these things then so can you!
CrossFit, Martial Arts, Boxing, Spinning,
Fencing, Wresting, Roller Derby, I’ve done it
now it’s your turn. Find a sport, group exercise
you will enjoy and you are significantly more
likely to stick with it and your future sell will
THEATRE
ROYAL
January at Theatre Royal Bury St
Edmunds kicks 2019 off in style with the
ongoing performances of pantomime, a
footie-themed fundraiser and then the
premiere of a brand new play.
Sleeping Beauty has been dazzling audiences
with fun, frolics and magical mischief over the
Christmas season and there are still two weeks of
performances to go. Set in the medieval kingdom of
Burytonia, the story follows Princess Aurora who has
been cursed by the wicked fairy
Carabosse, on her 16th birthday
Aurora will prick her finger on
a spinning wheel and die! How
will Nanny Fanny, Grub the
Kitchen Boy, Prince Florin, Fairy
Fortune, King Edmund and
Rupert the Royal Announcer
deal with this malicious magic?
Come along on the adventure
to find out, you’ll meet questing
knights, mythical beasts and even take a journey
beneath the earth! Theatre Royal’s traditional family
pantomime is a treat for everyone, performances
continue until Sun 13 Jan. There is also a Relaxed
Performance on Fri 11 Jan at 1.30pm which is
Autism and Dementia Friendly, please call the
Box Office to book for this performance, all other
performances can also be booked online at
www.theatreroyal.org.
The Ipswich Town Legends return to the theatre for
another lively and unmissable evening of stories and
anecdotes about the club and their careers and we
welcome ITFC’s Matt Holland to the theatre for the
very first time. Join Bryan Hamilton, Terry Butcher
and Matt Holland as they share their stories with
Theatre Royal audiences. This evening is guaranteed
to entertain fans of the club, both young and old
– join us for another superb evening with some of
ITFC’s best-loved players for a night of all things
football! Book early to avoid disappointment. This
is a fundraiser for the theatre (Registered Charity
Number 242977) and limited tickets are also
available to meet the players after the show for a
drink. Thu 17 Jan, 7.30pm.
Rounding off the month Theatre Royal
Bury St Edmunds is delighted to present
the premiere of a funny, charming and
genuinely thought provoking bold new
play – The Wisdom Club by Danusia
Iwaszko, writer of A Labour of Love, 2015.
When Susanna tells her mother Megan
she no longer wants her to look after the
children, Megan can’t help but feel out of
a job. If she’s not being a mother or a grandmother,
then who and what is she?
If retired brewery worker, Lenny knew his retirement
was going to be so long he would have started
another career. Ex hospital worker, Rani, is on a
mission; these friends need to protest and step out
of the shadows. This is grey power, not girl power.
The Wisdom Club runs from Wed 30 Jan until Sat
9 Feb and there is an Audio Described & Captioned
Performance Sat 9 Feb at 3pm, with an optional
Touch Tour before the show at 2pm.
For details and tickets go to www.theatreroyal.org or call the box office on 01284 769505
IN THE SPOTLIGHT...
HANNAH WHITE
MUSIC
Elephant Eye is the latest album
from the fiercely independent and
distinctly political singer-songwriter,
Hannah White.
With gripping production from Nigel Stonier
(Thea Gilmore, Martha Wainwright, Joan Baez)
and instrumental contributions from AMA 2017
Instrumentalist of the Year Chris J Hillman
(Billy Bragg, Joe Purdy), Paul Beavis (Andy
Fairweather Low, Sandi Thom) and Jimmy
Forres (adding a touch of Tom Waits) the
album embodies Hannah’s characteristically
catchy, sunny melodies that hover over greyer
areas and cloudier depths.
‘Elephant Eye’ continues the creative
emergence of an artist who can deliver social
conscience in the folk troubadour style of Judy
Collins or Joan Baez’ - Country Music Magazine
‘One of the most exciting songstresses on the
country music scene’ - Maverick Magazine
‘Together they deliver a very polished album
with songs ranging from delicate country
tinged ballads, political songs and harder
edged numbers. White sings well, her voice
high and light, at times reminiscent of Dolly
Parton’ - Americana UK
‘By this point you’re grasping for superlatives!’
- there’s enough star quality here to make you
excited about Hannah’s future’ - RnR Magazine.
Somewhere between Patty Griffin and Billy
Bragg, Hannah is an expression of the British
struggle, a true artist of our time: an activist, a
poet, a person who resolutely represents her
class and her background in melodic, catchy
tones and in perfect dignity.
Hannah is also, together with her husband
Keiron Marshall, the founder of The Sound
Lounge, a Music and Arts venue that was
established in Tooting throughout 2017. The
venue was set up through crowd funding and
hosted over 150 independent artists from
around the UK, Europe and the US. The SL
ran an AQA accredited training programme
in sound engineering, barista, and community
event management. The courses were
offered at no cost to the refugees/asylum
seekers, young people leaving care, long term
unemployed or other vulnerable groups. The
venue also made available free coffee mornings
for the disadvantaged in the community.
In 2016, prompted by harrowing television
images of a young boy washed up on a Turkish
beach, Hannah began to travel back and forth
to the refugee camp in Calais aptly named
‘The Jungle’. She went as a volunteer in 2016,
on several occasions bringing with her food,
clothing, sleeping bags and tents. Hannah
continues her humanitarian work. She has
returned to London from Chamonix in October
where she performed for survivors of Grenfell.
Adventures
HAPPY NEW YEAR...
New year is here and it’s only
tradition that I share my 2019
resolutions...
When nature calls, I’ll steel my resolve to wait
for my normal morning walk, unless special
considerations apply. I’ll decide what those
special considerations are.
Resolution #1: I will eat less and exercise more.
Too many nights on the sofa, too many dog
biscuits and too little time running around the
local dog park has made me a little, well, fluffier.
Resolution #2: I will beg less.
I’ve got begging down to a fine art – they are
puddy in my paws – but it sure is demeaning.
Resolution #3: I’ll stay out of the cat’s litter box.
I vow to resist the urge to snoop around the cat’s
private lavatory – even though it’s a lot of fun!
Resolution #4: I won’t steal food as much.
I won’t go out of my way to steal food, although
all bets are off if they make it really easy for me.
Resolution #7: I’ll bark at the postman less.
Even though it works to put him in his place, I’ll
try not to exercise my authority over him and
other delivery people, although my self-esteem
does get a boost when they retreat.
Resolution #8: I’ll tolerate outfits more.
My owner has gone to a lot of trouble to get
these things, so I’ll just put up with the way they
feel and the taunts of the other dogs.
Oh by the way, I am also on Instagram now
so follow me @official_archies_adventures.
You can also keep up to date with my antics on
Twitter @bouncearchie
Resolution #5: I’ll introduce myself in more
appropriate ways.
In other words, I’ll focus above the waist when
introducing myself to humans. Somehow, I get
the feeling my normal greeting methods invade
their private space.
Resolution #6: I’ll do better “holding it” until
morning.
