E YOUR LIFE MATTERS”
Blood group
“There is no substitute for blood. It only
comes from generous Donors.”
Blood compatibility is a serious issue and
about 5/ of population die daily in under developing
countries like Pakistan due to lack
of blood in serious illness like hemorrhage.
To create awareness among individuals a
blood camp was organized by Dawaa Society
in Student week.
A day-long blood group identification camp
was held under the auspices of Dawaa Society
(Blood Group Detection) of COMSATS
Abbottabad in Boys Lawn on Tuesday and
Wednesday under the supervision of Respected
Sir Junaid and Sir Mubashir. The
opening time and closing time were in between
10am to 2pm.
About 300 candidates were able to Check
their health Status and Detection of their
Blood Group. The main objectives of this Free
Health checkup and Blood Group Detection
camp was to Know once own health status
thus to make the Enrolment for a volunteer
blood donors list in our campus who can donate
fresh blood in a medical emergency.
Along with free health checkup, free counselling
was also provided by the concerned
members of Dawaa society. A positive response
was obtained by the concerned individuals.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
“Fit, fat or fine?”
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person’s weight
in kilograms divided by the square of height
in meters. A high BMI can be an indicator of
high body fatness. BMI can be used to
screen for weight categories that may lead
to health problems, but it is not diagnostic
of the body fatness or health of an individual.
As
“It is health that is real wealth and not piece
of gold and silver.”
In Dawaa society camp, BMI of abot 300
candidate were checked by the members
of Dawaa society during working hours and
counselling is provided regarding diet to
adjust your body weight according to your
height to overcome obesity or to use of rich
protein and fibrous diet to compensate your
body weight.
An active participation was observed by
registered members and a positive response
was gained.
Blood Glucose Level:
“Are you on the path of Diabetes?”
Knowing and understanding the symptoms of high and low blood
sugar is very important for people living with diabetes, as well as
their friends and family members. Another achievement of Dawaa
society is that the blood glucose screening is done free of cost on
Tuesday and Wednesday In Dawaa Society camp.
About 200 candidates were able to Check their health Status and
Detection of their Blood sugar level. The main objective of the
screening was to create awareness in COMSATS population about
diabetes, identify its type and cure by using less sugar diet and to
deliver information about normal sugar level.
There are higher than normal level of sugar in blood can be controlled
by using proper diet, exercise and daily walk routines.
Thus, we can say that;
“Walk for the cure”
Wouldn’t it be faster if we ran?
Prediabetes: The early, reversible stage of diabetes. Damage is
already occurring in the body, but there is still time to change the
course.
Can be managed by using a balanced diet, activity and medication.
Stress is major cause and can be overcome by controlling it.
Diabetes: The disease becomes increasingly aggressive.
Can be managed by using plenty of fibers, grains, get more physical
activity and lose extra weight.
“Actually, you are not ill, your pancreas is just lazy”
Blood Pressure
“Lower your blood pressure before your blood pressure
lowers you.”
Normal blood pressure is vital to life. Without the pressure that forces
our blood to flow around the circulatory system, no
oxygen or nutrients would be delivered through our arteries to the
tissues and organs.
Should Consume Less Sodium
Most of the sodium we consume is in the form of salt, and the clear
majority of sodium we consume is in processed and restaurant foods.
Your body needs a small amount of sodium to work properly, but too
much sodium is bad for your health. Excess sodium can increase your
blood pressure and your risk for a heart disease and stroke. Together,
heart disease and stroke kill more people each year than any other
cause.
To aware the COMSATS population, DAWAA Society also play a important
role in measurement of blood pressure during camp. About
250 candidates were selected to check their blood pressure and
counselling is done by 9th semester of Pharm. D students to cope
with situations of low and high blood pressure which may be life
threatening if not managed properly.
Some tips that can be helpful to overcome blood pressure are:
• Keep a healthy body weight.
• Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products.
• Cut down on sodium salt in the diet.
• Take regular aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, for at least
30 minutes a day, most days of the week.
• Moderate your alcohol intake.
Achievements
In the start although our team was quite good,
many considered us the favorites to win the tournament
but it was the opposite. As we would lose,
out to a small team and gets knocked out of the
tournament.
It was until the 5th semester that I told the teammates
that is enough now this is not luck; we cannot
blame the luck again, again and again. We are going
to lift the trophy now or never.
We practiced a lot that time, worked as hard as we
could and the result was that our department “Civil
Engineering” won the final and lifted the trophy for
the very first time and it was just the be-ginning.
Later on, no one was able to beat us and we won the
11
trophy three times in a row Alhamdulillah.
During these games, I was declared 4
times player of the match and two
times best player of the tournament.
I captained the Ab-bottabad
Campus team for 3 years and
was the part of COM-SATS University
team during my 4 years at the
university.
The best moment for me was when COM-
SATS University won the semifinal match against
Quaid e Azam University in HEC All Pa-kistan Football
Tournament because it was the first time COM-SATS
reached to the final and had an opportunity to be the
win-ners among all the 128 teams participated in the
tournament. I must say it was the worst moment for
me as well because due to injury I was not able to play
that final match.
Well unluckily, we could not win the final but it was
the best mo-ment representing COMSATS and feeling
proud to be a part of it. Football for me I should say is
the love of my life. I am playing since I could remember
anything. From school to college to university I
never quit playing football and I do not think I ever will.
Many people just consider it a game but for me football
is not just a game. Without football, my life is worth
nothing. It is because of the unconditional love for this
game.
Interviewer: First memory of you Playing Football?
Playing football with my classmates in school during the
break in class.
Interviewer: How important do you think a team is
for a game?
A good team is everything. Trust, Unity, Faith & Re-spect
are the most important things. If we‘re strong as team
there is no such thing as a failure.
Interviewer: Does hard work makes you a
The
Dark Horse under
whose captaincy COMSATS
Abbottabad was able to progress
for the first time into The
good play-er or natural talent beats it?
Natural talent is a God gifted so it can
beat any-thing, but the talent alone
is not going to beat the hard work.
Because hard work gives you confidence.
You have to work hard
along with the natural talent. It is
compulsory!
Interviewer: What was the last
present you gave some-one?
Ha-ha what type of question is that. BTW. Last
week to my niece on her birthday.
Interviewer: Who inspires you the most among
Foot-ball players?
Lionel Messi
Interviewer: What’s the funniest nickname ever
given to you and how did it happen?
Lol “Mithoo”.
I was in school but was selected in the college team who
were going to Lahore to play inter board games and I had
to change my identity. Most of them knew me so it was
quite difficult for them to call me with my changed id
name so they gave me this nickname Mithoo.
Health Bits
Cough can help to keep your throat clear from phlegm & other irritants. However, sustained
coughing can also be symptomatic of a number of conditions, such as an allergy, a viral infection,
or a bacterial infection. You can treat coughs due to colds, allergies, and sinus infections
with a no. of over-the-counter medicines. Bacterial infections will require antibiotics.
1. Honey: 2 teaspoons of honey with herbal tea or warm water and lemon. The honey does
the soothing, while the lemon juice can help with congestion.
2. Pineapple: An enzyme found only in the stem and fruit of pineapples — can help suppress
coughs as well as loosen the mucus in your throat. Eat a slice of pineapple or drink
3.5 ounces of fresh pineapple juice three times a day.
3. Peppermint: Menthol in peppermint soothes the throat and acts as a decongestant,
helping to break down mucus. To make a steam bath, add 3 or 4 drops of peppermint oil
for every 150 milliliters of hot water. Drape a towel over your head, and take deep breaths
directly above the water.
4. Gargles: Salt and water gargle can help soothe a scratchy throat that causes you to cough.
Mixing 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water can help to relieve irritation.
C o u g h
Strep throat is a common infection. Symptoms include severe sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, swollen lymph nodes in the
neck, throat that is bright red in color, and white or yellow spots on the throat. Antibiotics are used to treat strep throat.
You can relieve some of the symptoms of strep throat with home remedies
• Over-the-counter pain medications including ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) can help relieve
pain and inflammation.
• Gargling with salt water is a natural remedy that can help clear the throat and relieve pain.
• Throat sprays, many that contain topical anesthetics can provide short-term relief.
• Lozenges can help keep the throat moist, and those with anesthetics in them may help relieve strep throat pain.
• Sip warm beverages (tea with honey or lemon, herbal teas, clear soups), cold beverages, and eat frozen desserts (such
as ice cream or popsicles).
• Use a humidifier to keep your mouth and throat from drying out.
• The use of apple cider vinegar as a diluted solution to gargle is believed to be effective due to its antibacterial properties.
However, vinegar is acidic and can be harmful to tooth enamel.
• Consult your doctor before using apple cider vinegar or any herbal home remedy.
Strep Throat
A runny nose can be one of the most annoying symptoms of the common cold. Thankfully, there are several natural and home remedies
to try.
• Drink plenty of fluids: Drinking fluids and staying hydrated when dealing with a runny nose can be helpful if you also
have symptoms of nasal congestion. This ensures that mucus in your sinuses thins out to a runny consistency and is easy for you
to expel. Avoid beverages that dehydrate rather than hydrate. This includes drinks like coffee and alcoholic beverages.
• Hot teas: Hot beverages like tea may sometimes be more helpful than cold ones. This is because of their heat and steam,
which help open and decongest airways. Look for teas that contain anti-inflammatory and antihistamine herbs, such as chamomile,
ginger, mint, or nettle. Drinking hot herbal tea can help soothe a sore throat.
• Inhaling Hot steam has been shown to help treat a runny nose. A 2015 study of people with the common cold proved
that using steam inhalation was quite effective. It reduced illness recovery time by about one week compared to no steam
inhalation at all.
1. Heat clean water in a clean pot on your stove - DON’T let it get to a boil.
2. Place your face above the steam for 20–30 minutes at a time.
3. Take deep breaths through your nose. Take breaks if your face gets a too hot.
4. Blow your nose afterward to get rid of mucus.
• Spicy foods if you’re having symptoms of nasal congestion, eating spicy foods can possibly help.
