The Secretary’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to Woodstock
Park.
Because of the holiday period, this programme
will cover matches against Sevenoaks Town and
VCD Athletic. Welcome to their Players, Officials
and Supporters and a welcome to the match officials.
Sevenoaks Town gained promotion from the
SCEL last season. They are in 10 th position in the
table and have a better away record than home
having won four and drawing two out of their six
away games played. Welcome back to Woodstock
two ex Brickies in Ben Bridle-Card and Josh
Dorling.
VCD Athletic have had a good first half of the season.
At the time of writing these notes they are in
9 th position. In their ranks are Charlie MacDonald
who has scored 15 goals and our ex-players,
Jack Steventon, Tyrone Guthrie, Luke Coleman
and Joe Denny.
Our disastrous run of results continued when we
lost again, this time to Faversham Town last
Saturday. The first half must have been the worst
we have played this season. I can’t remember
one shot on goal. We bucked up a bit in the
second half but our solitary goal scored by
defender Chris Webber (his second goal in 63
appearances for the club) was not enough to get
us anything out of the game. What a goal it was
though. Chris was wide on the right near the half
way line when his spectacular free kick gave the
goal keeper no chance and sailed into the net.
Against East Grinstead the previous Saturday it
was a better display but a similar story with our
forwards not making any impression. Our
plummeting down the table has been mystifying
really as we haven’t been outplayed by many
teams we have played recently. In fact, in my
opinion the only team that has outplayed us
in all competitions this season was Cray Wanderers
when they won 2-0 here in August. All I
do know is that having the worst recent record of
any team in the league will only lead to one outcome
so things will have to change.
On paper we have the fire power to get goals but
unfortunately it is not happening on the pitch. To
try to change things, Aslan has bought in on short
-term loans, David Smith, from Dover Athletic,
Henry Woods , who made his debut last Saturday
against Faversham and Danny Devine whose debut
has been held up by form difficulties. Henry
and Danny join us for a one month period from
Gillingham FC. Josh Dorling and Harrison Hatfull
have moved on to try to secure a regular first
team place. Josh has moved to Sevenoaks Town
and Harrison has gone to SCEL side K Sports. A
shame really because both players have terrific
potential.
You will see elsewhere in the programme our
press release about our tie up and sponsorship
with Quinn Estates – one of the largest Developers
in Kent. Mo and I met up with Mike Quinn a
couple of weeks ago and he is whole heartedly
supporting us in our aim to improve our status in
football. The Chairman and I are both excited
about the future of our 132 year old club. If you
travel on the M2 between Sittingbourne and Faversham
you will see a large advertising board
that shows forthcoming Sittingbourne Football
Club Fixtures. This is a Quinn Estates initiative.
They are also going to erect a large fixture board
in the Town Centre.
The photo is of our
Christmas tree that
was exhibited at the
St Michaels Church
Christmas tree festival
and also at The
St John The Baptist
Christmas tree festival
at Tunstall.
Today is our Brickies
lottery £500
draw that will be
drawn on the pitch
at half time. Good
luck to all of our
Brickies lottery
members.
The Directors and
Committee of Sittingbourne
Football
Club are delighted
to announce that we
have appointed
Alan Barty as President.
After the VCD Athletic
match the only
game we have before Christmas is at Bromley on
Sunday 23 rd December when we play high flying
Cray Wanderers.
Our next home match is on Saturday 29 th December
when we entertain Herne Bay.
The board of Sittingbourne Football Club wish all
their loyal supporters, players and volunteers a
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
From the Programme Editor
Hi All
These are our penultimate and ultimate! home
fixtures before Christmas day, so I wish you
and your family a very happy Christmas and
thank you for buying the match day programme
this year.
Strange goings on at Ashford Utd with Gary
Alexander and his entire management team
being given the chop. There can’t be many
managers who have
been sacked just after
a 4-1 victory! the
score that Ashford
beat Herne Bay.
Also Nick Davis, our
old manager, has
been appointed as
Ramsgate Manager
in place of Lloyd
Blackman who resigned
from the
Rams citing differences
with the new
Director regime at
the Thanet club.
It’s all change too at
Faversham Town as
well with Clive Walker
now stepping
down following Ray
Turner’s resignation
as manager. Clive has had a brilliant career
here in Kent. He has managed Dover Athletic
(twice), Chatham Town, Ashford Town, as well
as being assistant at Maidstone Utd. It was
however a baptism of fire for the new Faversham
Town managerial duo of Phil Miles and
Danny Chapman as their first game in charge
saw them lose 4-1 to Greenwich Borough—But
as we all know they bounced back against us.
As I was researching these notes I realised just
how many managerial changes there have
been in Kent already, with more to come I expect!
Staying fairly local its good to see that Cray
Wanderers have finally been given planning
permission to build a new ground at Flamingo
Park. The original application was turned
down by the Mayor of London but the changes
made to the application have now been accepted.
I would like to pay tribute to Bostik League
president Alan Turvey who passed away the
same week as our President Allan Crowshaw.
Alan Turvey was, for me and many others, Mr
Isthmian League having been the Chairman for
many years and overseeing the Ryman sponsorship
and other sponsorships' that made the
league what it is today. Our sincere condolences
go to his family and friends. Also another
Isthmian stalwart, Mike Woods, has also
passed away. Mike has been the league statistician
for some years and we also extend our
condolences to his family and friends.
Finally a word about how relegation will work
this season in the Bostik North and South. It’s
been confirmed that two clubs this year go
down. Then next year the 3rd from bottom has
a play off against the 2nd placed team at step
5. Which is a good idea in my mind. With
Thamesmead Town’s demise however its
probable that only one team from our league
will go down. Watch this space.
VCD Athletic — A Brief History
VCD Athletic FC is one of only a few clubs to
have originated during the Great War when, in
1916 it was formed by workers employed at the
Vickers armaments factory in Crayford. The
Company originally played only interdepartmental
games until it was decided that
the best players from the various sections would
be elected to represent the firm. The club have
played at the firm's sports ground, Oakwood, in
Old Road, Crayford, from the outset right up to
the present time, except for eight seasons spent
ground sharing whilst trying to get permission
for the erection of floodlights.
In the early days, only friendly matches were
played as there were no official competitions
during the war years, and records show that a
club called Vickers (Erith) joined the re-formed
Kent League in 1919, changing their name to
Vickers (Crayford) a year later. In their first season
in the Kent League they visited Maidstone
United on Boxing Day and played in front of a
crowd of 13,500. The Vickers team that day
contained seven Arsenal players who were finishing
off their war service. Two years later,
Vickers joined the Dartford & District League,
followed by entry into the newly formed Kent
Amateur League, Division One in 1923. Their
first trophies came in 1927 when they won the
Kent FA Junior Cup and the Kent Benevolent
Cup.
It was a further 25 years before more silverware
came their way, when they won the Kent
Division One title in 1953. The Kent Amateur
Cup was won in 1962 and in 1964 but the following
season saw a spectacular slump and relegation,
with a record of P24 W0 D2 L22, goals
for 25, goals against 199.
Promotion was gained in 1969, but after a mediocre
period during the 1970s, they were relegated
in 1980 back to Division Two. A season
later they were promoted back to Division One
and in 1985 won the championship, gaining promotion
to the restructured Premier Division. By
now the Kent Amateur League had changed its
name to the Kent County League and the club
enjoyed further success when they won the
Kent FA Intermediate Shield in 1988. In the
same year the club was involved in the last ever
match played at Maidstone United's London
Road ground when they won the West Kent
Challenge Cup.
In 1993, Martin Ford joined the club as manager
and, in season 1995/1996 a unique cup treble
was achieved with wins in the Kent Intermediate
Shield, Kent County League Cup, and the Erith
Hospitals Cup. Season 1996/1997 then saw the
club win the Kent County Premier Division title
for the first time in their history, and by a record
15 points. Senior status was awarded that same
year and a successful application was made to
join the Winstonlead Kent League where, in
their first season in modern times, VCD Athletic
finished in a creditable ninth place. The following
season saw the club begin a ground-share
with Thamesmead Town, finishing up in seventh
place but also reaching the final of the Kent
League Cup, where they lost 1-0 to Deal Town
in a closely fought match. Deal at this time were
assembling the side that was later to win the FA
Vase at Wembley.
A season later the club went one better, beating
Faversham Town 4-0 in the final to bring the
club a first ever senior trophy, and the season
after that the club made its third consecutive
cup final appearance when they reached the
final of the Kent Senior Trophy. However, they
narrowly missed out on more silverware when
they went down 10-9 on penalties to Whitstable
Town. The club eventually spent five seasons
as tenants of Thamesmead Town before Lordswood
FC kindly took their place for two seasons.
Then the club embarked on a one year
term with near neighbours Greenwich Borough,
and despite the handicap of having to groundshare,
VCD were consistently one of the
league's strongest members during their time in
the league.
The club reached the final of the League Cup in
2002/2003, but on the day there was no celebration
as VCD were comfortably beaten 2-0 by
Cray Wanderers. The following season was a
disappointment as far as the cups were concerned,
but a creditable third place was
achieved in the league. Continued
VCD Athletic — A Brief History
Further cup success followed however when, in
season 2005/2006 the club reached the final of
the Kent Senior Trophy for the second time.
Having suffered a loss in the first final on penalties,
there was a reversal of fortune this time
when, after having drawn 1-1 with Tunbridge
Wells at the end of extra time, the VCD players
held their nerve to win the penalty shoot-out 3-
1.
During 2005 the long awaited news the club
wanted to hear finally arrived when planning
permission for floodlights and the development
of the Oakwood ground was granted by Bexley
Council. This, together with a substantial grant
from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund,
part of the Football Foundation, enabled work
to commence early in 2006. The pitch was levelled,
rotated 90 degrees and re-laid. New perimeter
paths were laid, along with perimeter
fencing to enclose the pitch. Floodlights were
erected in June 2006, at the same time that
work on enhancing the changing rooms also
began. The spectator stand was re-sited and
extended, and further additions included a new
raised hospitality area situated to overlook the
pitch, and a new tea bar adjacent to the popular
members bar.
At the end of the 2007 season Martin Ford resigned
as manager, and the club are grateful
for his vision and enthusiasm over the years
that took VCD from being a Kent County
League side to one that was always around the
top of the table in the Kent League, and on his
departure the club had just reached the last 16
of the prestigious FA Vase for the second consecutive
season. Head coach Dean Frost took
over as caretaker manager, and under his
guidance the club obtained runners up spot in
the league, narrowly missing out to Whitstable
Town, and then the following season Paul Foley
was appointed manager of the first team,
with Dean Frost reverting to his former position
of head coach. Under their stewardship the
club finished runners up once more. A year later,
the club finally won the Kent League Premier
Division title together with the Kent Senior
Trophy, culminating in the long awaited promotion
to the Ryman Football League.
The first season was a success with an 8th
place finish, but the club were left stunned
when the Ryman League deemed ground issues
warranted demotion, and despite an appeal
to the Football Association, the decision
was upheld and the club went back to the Kent
League. Manager Paul Foley resigned to join
Chatham Town, taking virtually the whole team
with him, and the club appointed former reserve
team manager Ricky Bennett his replacement.
Under his leadership VCD achieved
third place in his first season, and in the 2nd
season won the Kent League Cup, beating Corinthian
2-0 in the final. We also lifted a second
trophy with a 3-2 victory over league champions
Herne Bay in the Kent League Challenge
Shield. Midway through season 2012/2013
Ricky Bennett left the club due to outside pressures,
and in his place the club secured the
services of Tony Russell, previously manager
of Erith Town FC, who joined with his assistant
Ray Powell. With most of the players leaving
with the previous manager the club was in disarray,
but a side was quickly formed by the
new management, and a magnificent record
breaking run of 17 victories and 2 draws in the
last 19 league fixtures enabled the club to once
more gain promotion to the Ryman Football
League Division 1 North. On the last day of the
season, sitting in 2nd place the Vickers defeated
Romford FC 6-0 while leaders Witham
Town could only draw their last game which
saw us secure the title by a point, taking the
club to the Premier Division, its highest ever
level in the pyramid. The club struggled for a lot
of the season, spending most of the time in the
relegation places but winning the last 6 games
saw us climb to safety, finally finishing in 18th
position to maintain our place in the division.
Manager Tony Russell immediately resigned,
joining Cray Wanderers FC in Division 1, taking
his entire side with him but the club acted
quickly to secure the services of Keith McMahon
as new First Team Manager. Keith worked
tirelessly and brought in some excellent players,
but the club was relegated back to Division
1 (North). The club finished 17th out of 24 last
season.
Sevenoaks Town, a brief History
Sevenoaks Town Football Club was established 1883. The club is a FA Charter Standard
Community Club and one of the largest clubs in the south east.
team in the South of England. Over 1000 spectators watched the game with all the proceeds
from the match donated to two local hospitals.
In 1900/01 Sevenoaks Town won the Sevenoaks Charity Cup for the first team. They won the
cup again in 1904/05 and 1905/06. In 1906 Sevenoaks Town became one of the founder
members of the current Sevenoaks & District League.
In 1951 Sevenoaks Town amalgamated with local team, St John's United and became members
of the Kent Amateur League.
In 1965/66 the club won the Division One League Cup and in 1968/69 and 1975/76 were
crowned champions of the Premier Division.
In 1984 the Western and Eastern regions of the Kent Amateur League merged to become the
Kent County Football League. Sevenoaks Town won the Premier League in its first season
and again in 1995/96 and 2002/03.
Other trophies won include Intermediate Challenge Cup twice, Inter-Regional Cup twice, Kent
Junior Cup three times and Sevenoaks Charity Cup twelve times.
In 2003/04 the club started to make considerable ground improvements including changing
rooms and the installation of floodlights. Promotion to the Bostik South from the Southern
Counties Football League was gained at the end of season 2017-18.
The club now runs junior teams from U7's to U18's competing across a variety of local and regional
leagues accommodating players of all abilities; this includes the Kent Girls and Ladies
Our New Shirt Sponsors—Press Release
Kent-based property developer Quinn Estates
has pledged its support to Sittingbourne Football
Club agreeing a sponsorship deal for the
upcoming season.
This week, CEO Mark Quinn presented Maurice
Dunk, Chairman of Sittingbourne FC, with
their new Quinn Estates branded shirts to signify
the start of their sponsorship. Also in attendance
were Will Sheardown, Development
Director at Quinn Estates, and John Pitts,
Senior Club Secretary and Treasurer at Sittingbourne
FC.
Maurice Dunk, Chairman of Sittingbourne FC,
said: “Having the Quinn Estates sponsorship
means everything to our club, which has been
a focal part of the local community for over
130 years. The company has a well-known
track record for delivering what they say they
will and leaving a lasting, positive impact in
the local community.
“We’re looking forward to developing this relationship
with Quinn Estates over the coming
years, which will allow us to progress. It is the
support of local sponsors that truly care about
sports and leisure in the community that really
helps us as a club.
“Sittingbourne FC looks after the main football
stadium and four other pitches at Woodstock,
which is home to over 20 teams proudly bearing
our name. It is an incredibly expensive organisation
to run and without the help of sponsors
like Quinn Estates, supporters, volunteers,
fundraising and grants running the club
wouldn’t be possible.
“The club has more local people involved than
at any time in its history and, looking ahead,
we are hoping to develop local players to play
at a higher level whilst constantly improving
the facilities. One day we would love to be
promoted to the league above, but more than
anything else, we are striving to keep our club
going strong – a vision that Quinn Estates’
sponsorship is now supporting.
“We’re proud to be associated with a company
like Quinn Estates, who have developed a
proven reputation of doing what they say they
will something which is currently being illustrated
at Herne Bay. This significant sponsorship
deal should enable us to push forward as
both a club and a community.”
Mark Quinn, CEO and Chairman of Quinn Estates,
said: “We are passionate about sport
and leisure in the local community, so we are
proud to sponsor Sittingbourne Football Club.
We know so many local people volunteer their
spare time to support the community here, so
it’s the least we can do.
“Hopefully our support will help the club to
grow and from everyone at Quinn Estates we
wish Sittingbourne FC the best of luck for the
season ahead.”
Established in 1886, Sittingbourne Football
Club is part of the Bostik League South East
Division. Since 2013, the club has played at
Woodstock Park, which has a capacity of
Sittingbourne 1 Three Bridges 2, Att 132
Talking about his team’s 2-1 win last week,
Whitstable Town manager Scott Porter said he
was so pleased as Sittingbourne is a hard place
to go to and get a result.
Unfortunately, he’s got that wrong at the moment
as this was the fifth home game in a row
that Sittingbourne had failed to win.
And to make it worse this was a golden opportunity
wasted, as Three Bridges had only won
twice in 11 previous games this season and on
top of that they had to play the last quarter of
the game with only 10 men.
Yet they still contrived to score a last minute
winner and leave Sittingbourne wondering just
what they have to do they end their poor run of
results.
After all, they look a decent team with some
good players, particularly going forward. But
they’re also a bit naïve too, and perhaps it’s a
lack of experience that’s letting them down for
now. That, and missing so many chances when
well placed to score.
Manager Aslan Odev again rang the changes,
with four coming in to the team that lost to Whitstable.
Patrick Lee returned in goal for Matt
Funnell, Joe Denny replaced Lex Allan in defence,
Bola Dawodu came into midfield in place
of the suspended Dan Parkinson, and ex-
Brickie David Smith, on loan from National
League club Dover, took over from Nathan Elder
upfront.
In an even first half, Three Bridges looked a
better side than their league position suggested,
Akanbi particularly dangerous, putting one
good chance wide and seeing Lee tip over his
shot from distance.
When Sittingbourne, in their smart new Quinn
Estates-sponsored kit, began to get into the
game, Ira Jackson fired an opening too high
and Dawodu headed wide from a corner and
then had another header cleared off the line.
Sittingbourne, with Tom Loynes ever dangerous
down the left, began to create much more
in the second half but they couldn’t finish off the
openings they created, hardly forcing the visitors
keeper to make a save.
Ben Fitchett put the ball narrowly wide following
a corner, Jackson also missed a good opening
when Loynes put him clear, Smith had a shot
deflected wide and the referee rejected penalty
appeals for handball when a Denny shot was
blocked.
As the momentum seemed to be swinging Sittingbourne’s
way, Three Bridges were reduced
to 10 men when Collins got a straight red card
in the 65th minute for a high and dangerous
challenge on Loynes.
Dawodu also had a golden chance from a few
yards out but blazed over and how Sittingbourne
would pay for spurning their opportunities
as Three Bridges still flickered in occasional
sorties forward.
They probably had the best chance of the
whole game on 85 minutes when a good move
down the left set up Akanbi with a shooting
chance from about the penalty spot, but Lee
dashed out and made a terrific save.
But the warning signs weren’t heeded as Three
Bridges nicked all three points with 89 minutes
played, a near post corner headed strongly
home by unmarked captain Grant.
What a sucker punch. I still think Sittingbourne
are a top half team, even though the league table
shows otherwise at the moment, but finishing
in the top half seems such a lame ambition
after such a heady and promising start to the
season.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Chris Webber,
Reiss Crimmen (Yellow card), Lewis Chambers
(Josh Dorling, 85 min), Ben Fitchett, Joe Denny,
(Nathan Elder, 80 min), David Smith, Tommie
Fagg (Harrison Hatfull, 45 min, Yellow card),
Tom Loynes. Subs not used: Chmidi Otuadinma,
Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 24th November 2018
Bostik South East
East Grinstead Town 2 Sittingbourne 1
Att 84
That’s six defeats in a row for Sittingbourne.
And the second week in a row they’ve lost by a
late winning goal to a team from Sussex who
are below them in the league.
I for one didn’t see this defeat coming as they
worked their socks off to gain a deserved first
half lead.
But a harsh penalty and a breakaway goal did
for them in the second half, and although I felt
sorry for Sittingbourne, take nothing away from
East Grinstead who refused to ditch their game
plan and eventually reaped the reward.
On a dreary, drizzly afternoon, Sittingbourne
made three defensive changes from the team
beaten 1-0 by Three Bridges last week. Matt
Funnell took over in goal from Patrick Lee, Lex
Allan replaced the injured Ben Fitchett in central
defence, and at left-back debutant Naseer
Tshanzadeh came in for the suspended Reiss
Crimmen.
Sittingbourne have won away at Horsham and
Guernsey this season by energetically high
pressing a team determined to play the ball out
of defence.
When East Grinstead showed they were going
to do the same, then Sittingbourne pounced.
First Bola Dawodu robbed a defender by
sprinting to close him down, and was only
foiled by a full-length save by the keeper. Then
Tom Loynes and Ira Jackson did the same,
both going forward to fizz in fast and low crosses
that were just too quick on the slick wet
grass for anyone to get a touch on them.
David Smith was working hardest of them all,
and he set up the opening goal, winning the
ball to lay it back for Tommie Fagg. In a bit of
space but still at least 20 yards out, the tall
midfielder drove in a powerful low shot which
took a slight deflection off a defender to skim
into the corner of the goal.
Sittingbourne were on top in the first half and
Fagg had further efforts from distance, one just
wide and another deflected wide, while Jackson
had a penalty appeal turned down when
he bounced off a covering defender.
East Grinstead passed it nicely but threatened
less, though when they did get forward, Funnell
twice made good saves and both of them
with his feet rather than his hands.
Although that high level pressing demands a
huge amount of energy, Sittingbourne looked
set fair at half-time to see out the second half
and end a run of eight league games without a
win.
But the home side were level within a minute
of the restart. The dangerous Cundle burst into
the box in the inside-left channel and although
Joe Denny looked to have won the ball in a
sliding tackle, it must have looked a reckless
enough challenge to the referee for him to
award a penalty. Landais converted from the
spot, confidently sending Funnell diving the
wrong way.
East Grinstead dominated possession for a
while but gradually Sittingbourne got back on
top and began to press for the winner, with
Smith and Loynes both unlucky with volleyed
efforts.
But it was their willingness to go for it that
proved their undoing, as they lost possession
following their own 82nd minute corner and
didn’t react quick enough to stop the ball being
pumped forward.
Suddenly Cundle was speeding free in the
same position where he won the penalty but
this time he pulled back an immaculate low
cross into the six-yard box and Chapman neatly
scored the winner with a first-time finish.
Sittingbourne worked hard throughout and
surely deserved at least something from the
game, but it’s goals that count. They only
looked demoralised once the winner went in,
playing with confidence and determination up
to that point. It’s a bad run, but it will have to
end some time …
