opportunities to unite in celebration of the creative achievements for which we’re renowned.
The big one is, of course, Salon
International, which this year takes
place as always at London’s ExCel
centre from 13th -15th October.
A special highlight for many of us will be the TONI&GUY Mainstage event, which is also
being held at ExCel on the Sunday of Salon weekend. Earlier in the day, the first of two
stagings of the Alternative Hair Show ‘Mystique’ will be taking place at the Freemasons’ Hall
in Covent Garden – the early show is at 5pm and the late show at 9pm. As always,
EsteticaNetwork will be at Salon International again this year, so please come and visit us at
our stand so we can share with you some of the beautiful albums and look books which we
have published over the past 12 months. Further afield, we have two very important
international events taking place – The Goldwell Color Zoom international finals in
Toronto, Canada on Sunday 30th September and the International Wella Trend Vision
Awards in Lisbon, Portugal on Saturday, 3rd November. We wish the very best of luck to all
UK and Eire participants at both events!
Anne Hathaway
MARK WOOLLEY: Love it! Straight and sleek, Mona-Lisa-esque. This look is current and a departure
from the texture and colour pattern we have seen in recent seasons.
Hair: 9/Make-up: 9/Style: 9/Vote 9
ISOBEL EATON: She's always classic and understated with a look that people can relate to and is very
accessible. Her make-up is flawless and minimal allowing her natural beauty to shine through.
Hair: 8 Make-up: 7.5/Style: 8.5/Vote 8
JASON HOGAN: She can pull many different looks, including a blonds pixie crop and feminine bob
but I must say her simple middle-parting long locks are one of my favourites.
Hair: 9/Make-up: 7.5/Style: 9.5/Vote 8.7
JAMES TAYLOR: I prefer Anne’s hair shorter and darker. The colour borderline is too warm next to
her pale complexion. The way her hair has been styled is something we are seeing a lot at the moment.
Hair: 6/Make-up: 6/Style: 7/Vote 6.3
Total Look
8.5
Emilia Clarke
MARK WOOLLEY: Strong shape, direction and texture makes this look an all-round winner! During
AW18 I expect to see strong shapes making an appearance.
Hair: 9.5/Make-up: 9.5/Style: 9.5/Vote 9.5
ISOBEL EATON: She has a great young look with her darker roots and lightened ends which is so
current. I love how her hair is styled to give a more modern edge to the overall classic styling.
Hair: 7.5/Make-up: 7.5/Style: 7/Vote 7.3
JASON HOGAN: The Game of Thrones star always has a flawless style, however I have to say that I
much prefer her hair when she had it loose rather than quaffed off her face.
Hair: 6/Make-up: 8/Style: 8/Vote 7.3
JAMES TAYLOR: The lived-in blonde suits her as I always feel if you are on the paler side, make roots
your friend not your enemy. Its effortless in the style and the length suits her face shape perfectly.
Hair: 10/Make-up: 10/Style: 10/Vote 10

Total Look
Bella Hadid
MARK WOOLLEY: I love this for the reason that the straight and sleek, low parting gives the overall
look that vital touch of extra detail. Classically beautiful but very on-trend.
Hair: 8.5/Make-up: 8.0/Style: 9/Vote 8.5
ISOBEL EATON: Bella looks really glam. Her hair works really well with her styling and looks healthy and
glossy. Its styled very simply but compliments her total look. I also love her soft, dewy make-up.
Hair: 8/Make-up: 8/Style: 8/Vote 8.0
JASON HOGAN: Beauty Queen Bella can do no wrong when it comes to style! Her deep side-parting
frames her face and her glossy brunette chocolate tones really stand out.
Hair: 10/Make-up: 9/Style: 8.5/Vote 9.2
JAMES TAYLOR: This is not my favourite look on her but she’s is still stunning. The hair is too straight
to go with the make-up and outfit, I'd have liked to have seen a soft wave around her face.
Showing Off
Top UK hair gurus have been demo-ing their skills and
creativity at shows, seminars & runways across the globe:
here’s a snapshot of 2018 summertime showtime. Maria Weijers

L’Oréal Colour
Trophy audiences
lapped up Ken
Picton’s take on how
we capture beauty in
our ever-changing
media driven world.
Luscious colours,
languid poses and
a louche attitude
oozed stylishly from
Jayson Gray’s show
contribution to Wella’s
Trend Vision events.
Sally and Jamie
Brooks shared
their considerable
experience of editorial
hair for their show at
London’s L’Oréal
Colour Trophy Final.
UK trendsetting hairdressers are always flying the skies to work abroad on demos, runway shows and teaching
seminars. It sounds dreamy glamorous, but the reality of what these commissions demand lands you back on
earth with a thump! There’s little time to take in local sights – just plenty of time to get stuck in and enjoy being
creative both backstage and front of house. A perfect example of such is the TIGI Team which had its work cut out
in Milan when styling hair for Alberta Ferretti’s Resort & Limited Edition 2019 show. To complement dramatic
outfits embellished with crystals and embroidery, the TIGI team, headed by Maria Kovacs, created two different
creativity
17

Hair: Goldwell
The TIGI team used
both Bed Head and
Catwalk to style 40
models in Alberta
Ferretti’s Resort and
Limited Edition
2019 fashion show
in Milan.
Jason Hogan and the
Josh Wood Atelier
team tinted wigs
styled by Guido
Palau to enhance the
couture gowns on the
Valentino runway.

Hair: Jason Hogan, at Josh Wood Atelier for Valentino
looks on each of the 40 show models. Then there’s Jason Hogan, Associate Colourist at Josh Wood Atelier, tasked
with his team to colour 50 wigs for the Valentino Couture Fall 2018 show. It involved 150 hours of prep and 250
colour processes, stimulated by one big inspiration: a dark chocolate bourbon base with soft, rich tea hued ends. The
enormous wigs – styled by catwalk guru Guido Palau – were as impressive as they were voluminous. It’s also been
a busy season for Wella guest artist Jayson Gray. Producing a show for Wella’s Trend Vision UK tour and mentoring
event finalists, his show for Malta’s Trend Vision gala opening took months of prep. And somehow along the way, he
creativity
Creating this Dutch
braid attracted an
eager response for
Linton & Mac from
festival girls, along
with warm
acknowledgement
from those nostalgic
ladies in the lowlands.
managed to secure a guest hair colourist gig for Virgin EMI’s featured artists, doing Alice Chater’s hair for her Boy’s
& Girl’s and Heartbreak Hotel video singles. Another Guru on the circuit is Ken Picton, whose ‘Moving Image’
show for London’s L’Oréal Colour Trophy Final conveyed a modern take on capturing the instant image. This was
followed by the Brooks & Brooks ‘Editorial Image’ show which delivered exactly that – fab editorial looks perfect for
front covers. Just a teeny taster to prove the persistent global demand for UK gurus’ skills and creativity remains as
relentless as ever…
Shaping Man
Fades, short cuts, long curly lengths – there’s a neverending
choice of hip ’n’ trendy ways for guys to wear
their hair. All aboard this male train to find out more. Maria Weijers
Hair: Alter Ego
Hair: Alter Ego
There are so many ways to cut, style (and now) colour men’s hair, the goal of building a solid male clientele is very
achievable – especially as chaps are now far more style aware and receptive to suggestions and advice. They are
also much savvier. Gone are the days of simply using a shower gel for body, face and hair cleansing needs. Men are
taking a significant interest in the condition of their hair, manufacturers reporting an increase in sales of shampoos,
conditioners, scalp treatments and thickening products targeted specifically for blokes.
82 trends

Powerful looks by Ross Charles, York. Guys lay their characters bare to express their
inner selves through intense, in-your-face, impression-making styles.
Chaps are also much less inclined to simply get what they are given at the barbers, now recognising the difference between a perfunctory
haircut and one that’s suitably stylish and created with skill. Men’s haircutting is getting so precise, barbers are having to up their game to match
a salon stylist. Younger chaps are becoming more adventurous, clipper work creating popular design patterns and fades. And for older guys, if
their hair quality and quantity allow it, a fade just on the sides seamlessly connected to a heavier back and top (think many a footballer) is well
liked. Longer, less conventional styles are also making an appearance, as are tousled, textured curls, but arguably the most preferred look is a
shorter cut with a textured cool edge i.e. still shorter at the sides but with some cool texture on top.
Cut tight through the sides and connecting seamlessly
to a heavier top, Blue Tit, London, create men’s looks
which are as timeless as they are popular.

Extreme,
no-nonsense cuts
bordering on the
fierce. Jamie
Stevens, London,
takes precision work
to the wire with
dramatic, statementmaking
haircuts.
Saco
Gender fluidity, creative thinking and product development have all colluded to generate much more style diversity. Using colour in men’s
hair is slowly but surely becoming a much more accepted complement to a great haircut to enhance texture and shape but again, it needs
the skill of an artful colourist to avoid an obvious (and potentially risible) result. And when it comes to the polarising subject of beards –
well they seem entrenched as a firm fixture; there’s no sign of the facial hair trend abating. One thing is for sure though – keeping beards
trimmed and neatly groomed is definitely a must; scruffy tangled confusions are a total no-no.
Hair shows a great cross-section of all that’s cool on these three TONI&GUY
dudes. Go-to vertical stripes and muted colour toned fashions deliver an
understated casual air with an edge of sophistication.

Straight from ‘Love
Island’, model Eyal
Booker’s naturally curly
hair is controlled using
TIGI Bed Head for
Men. And to prove curly
hair needn’t be
problematic, Matte
Separation Wax was
applied to give texture.
Westrow, Leeds, enhances thick, plentiful hair with natural movement by dressing
it with a retro vibe, evoking images of 50s dance halls and street corner smoking.
As with everything in life, education and communication are the foundations for success in the male arena.
That means educating yourself on the latest nuances of men’s work and grooming and, educating your client about
the looks they could potentially wear and the products they’ll need to style it properly. Managing a chap’s expectation
is so important to give them the confidence needed to strut their look with style. Successful men’s grooming rests on
employing all the skills, creativity, fashion freedom and products now so readily available. Not losing sight of the fact
most men are totally up for looking their best helps you present them with the myriad of options now available to
help them – and you – achieve their stylish goal.
All-Star Challenge
Known worldwide as the top men’s hair competition, the
American Crew All-Star Challenge brought 16 global finalists
to Barcelona where they put their grooming skills to test.
Crowned as the Global
Winner of the 2017-2018
All-Star Challenge during
an epic hair show in
Barcelona, Vitaly Pimenov
(Russia) received his
award from legendary
hairstylist/photographer
and founder of American
Crew, David Raccuglia.
124 adloremter

In addition to the art of men’s grooming – the All-Star Challenge also focuses on creativity, technique and
the interpretation of the American Crew man. The 16 international finalists flew to Spain, where their
creations were photographed by the founder of American Crew, David Raccuglia. Thousands of stylists
from all over the world entered the competition, but only one gets recognized as the one to represent the
American Crew man. This year, Russian barber Vitaly Pimenov grabbed the gold in the famed global hair
competition – the winning look on the opposite page in black and white. The award ceremony took place
during the The Style Masters Show 2018 in Barcelona, where American Crew presented on stage their latest
men's trends, including the Style for the Road campaign in partnership with Harley Davidson.
The global judging panel for the competition was: Sandra Nygaard, Fashion and Grooming Director, Men’s
Health; Sergi Bancells, International Editorial Director, Estetica Magazine; Adam Mir, 2016-2017 All-Star
Challenge Global Champion; Paul Wilson, Global Artistic Director, American Crew & Co-owner and Creative
Director, Art + Science Salon; and Phoenix Thomson, Senior Education Manager, American Crew.
an incomparable
colour line-up with
naturals, brunettes,
reds & blondes: with
a special mixing
range included.
perfect
Wella Professionals introduces
Koleston Perfect with ME+ and
Pure Balance Technology , in
celebration of the brand’s most
exciting and revolutionary colour
innovation for over a century.
Loved by both hair
professionals and their
clients for generations,
Koleston Perfect
just got even better!
Following over 7
years of colour science
research and the testing of over
3,000 potential formulations,
Koleston Perfect will now feature
not one, but two new patented
technologies, both proven to
deliver vibrant rich colour with
less damage, colour after colour*.
TWO NEW PATENTED
TECHNOLOGIES
A scientific breakthrough designed
to replace extreme sensitizers
(PPD and PTD), ME+ Technology
reduces the risk by up to 60 times
of developing a new allergy in
people not already allergic to hair
colourants**. “PPD and PTDs were
first patented in the 19th century
and so it’s hard to imagine that for
well over a century our industry
has been basically using the same
dye molecules on permanent hair
colour,” explains Laura Simpson,
Chief Marketing Officer Coty
Professional Beauty. “New Koleston
Perfect with ME+ changes all this:
its breakthrough technologies
deliver vibrant colour with less
damage, colour after colour. We’re
confident this innovative approach
to permanent hair colour will
revolutionise our industry and
strengthen our position as the
leading professional hair colour
brand.” As well as ME+
Technology, new Koleston Perfect
also features Pure Balance
96 products
*compared to previous Koleston Perfect.
Valid for Koleston Perfect with Pure
Balance Technology
** FOR PEOPLE NOT ALLERGIC TO HAIR
COLOURANTS.
Although the risk of developing new allergy is
reduced, there remains a risk of allergic reaction
that can be severe. Always perform an allergy
alert test 48h before each colouration. Strictly
follow safety instructions and consult
www.wella.com. If your client has ever
experienced an allergic reaction to hair
colourants, you should not colour. ME+ is present
in specific shades of Pure Naturals, Rich Naturals,
Vibrant Reds, Special Blonde and Deep Browns
of the Koleston Perfect brand.

Technology. Designed to minimize
the formation of free radicals
during the colour formation by
deactivating impurities like metals
present in hair. Free radicals
interfere with the colour formation
during the colour development and
are a key cause of hair damage.
The result is even purer colour results
with natural depth and shine.
THE SAME COLOUR
BUT EVEN BETTER!
For hair professionals already
experienced in using Koleston
Perfect, the good news is that the
new formula with ME+ requires
no habit change whatsoever:
it features the same mixing ratio,
the same development time
and the same grey coverage, all
enhanced with easier mixing,
more precise application and an
improved fragrance. The result?
A better experience for colourists
and clients alike. “Smooth, gentle
and extremely easy to apply,
Koleston Perfect with ME+
achieves a unique fluidity of
colour,” adds Andreas Kurkowitz,
Wella Professionals’ Global Colour
Ambassador.“
The difference in consistency to
its previous generation creates a
more luxurious experience for the
client and colour professionals can
easily recognise the superior colour
results which are significantly more
even, balanced and true to tone
from root to tip*. This is major step
up in hair colour technology and
a major step up for colourists and
their clients.”
A better experience
for colourists and
clients alike, with
colour that stays true
to tone and provides
significantly less
damage every time,
colour after colour.
hairdressers with professional
products to progress their work
and develop their clientele and
their businesses. Anthony believes
hairdressers and their clients will
fall in love with TIGI Copyright
Care. “It’s about creating soft,
beautiful hairstyles people want to
wear. In the salon, hairdressers will
be empowered to create
personalised treatments that work
perfectly alongside TIGI
Copyright©olour, as well as
recommending an after-care
regime clients can follow at home.
Talking to salon owners who have
begun to use the range, I can see
TIGI Copyright Care is something
they’ve been waiting for.”
THE R&D EXPERT
Stephen Wire is the Global
Research & Development Director
for TIGI's parent-company,
Unilever. For him the launch of
TIGI Copyright Care signifies a
very exciting time for the brand.
"The mega-trend of personalisation
and customisation can now be
found within a revolutionary
haircare brand. A head of hair can
have over 100,000 fibres. Every
strand of hair has a different, shape,
thickness and elasticity, so
individual haircare needs and
desires will vary. The development
of TIGI Copyright has resulted in a
haircare range that can be
individually tailored to those needs.
We have selected ingredients from
a palette of over 1,000 possibilities
to design products that are
intermixable to enable complete
flexibility for the hairdresser."
Predictive
styling
platinum+ by ghd:
the world’s first smart
styler with new
technology that predicts
your hair’s needs.
The ghd platinum+
ensures the perfect
heat, at all times,
whatever your hair
type. Long live good
hair days!
styler that takes styling
technology to a whole
new level. Intelligent and
responsive, the new
ghd platinum+
features groundbreaking
innovation
that predicts your hair's needs and
responds by controlling heat more
effectively for ultimate results and
stronger, healthier hair.
THE TECHNOLOGY
Developed by ghd scientists
and engineers over 5 years,
new ultra-zone with predictive
technology is the latest
breakthrough in heat styling
and guarantees homogeneous
heat across the whole
styler plate:
• Cutting-edge predictive
technology recognises the
thickness of hair, the section size
and the speed at which you style,
adjusting accordingly to maintain
the optimum styling temperature.
• Infinity sensors monitor the
heat 250 times per second, to
always maintain the safer-for-hair
temperature of 185°C.
• No matter what the hair type or
styling technique, ghd platinum+
will ensure perfectly personalised
styling for your hair needs.
PERFORMANCE and
PROVEN RESULTS
The ghd platinum+ is so reliable
and has been so rigorously tested
that it comes with a 3 year
warranty for absolute peace of
mind. “We’ve taken sensing and
heating technology to the physical
maximum with platinum+,”
explains Dr. Tim Moore, ghd
Vice President of Smart Devices.
“By having a sensor which covers
the whole area of the heater,
and algorithms which smartly
predict what the heater needs to
do next, this styler can ensure
definitive styling longevity and
shine, without the damage.
It is the ultimate hair styling tool.”
The extraordinary technological
advancements in the ghd
platinum+ have also made a
hugely positive impression on ghd
Global Ambassador, Adam Reed:
“ghd has just made the best styler
even better,” he exclaims. “The
thing that I love most about ghd
platinum+ is that it features the
most incredible SMART
technology that adapts
to every individual’s hair needs;
this has made styling so easy for
me. No matter whether a client
has super thick hair or incredibly
fine hair, I know that by using
platinum+ I will get a consistent
result and a beautifully smooth
finish across every hair type.”
