The rich history and heritage of Keswick and the 

surrounding valleys and villages played its part in 

securing World Heritage Site status and offers many 

reasons for people to visit. A market town since 

medieval times, the town's Market Square still plays 

host to a twice weekly market and is surrounded by 

many unique, independent shops and galleries. 

Mining and farming heritage lives on today and the 

landscape and views draw people in and bring them 

back to Keswick time and again.

Keswick is a vibrant town and throughout the year 

hosts a number of festivals and events that attract 

visitors from all around the world. You will find a host 

of attractions and outdoor activities to enjoy along 

with a wide range of accommodation.

Heritage Site 

In July 2017, the Lake District National Park, with Keswick at its heart, was 

granted UNESCO World Heritage Site status. On 26th March, 2018 HRH Prince 

Charles visited Keswick to unveil the official World Heritage Site inscription 

plaque that sits in Crow Park.

Our cultural landscape and heritage formed a key 

part in the World Heritage Site bid. The spectacular 

landscape we enjoy today has been shaped by people 

for thousands of years through farming and industry. 

Fell farming continues to play a vital role in the 

Lakes and you will see the evidence of this as you 

spend time in the valleys surrounding Keswick. 

Mining is not so prevalent these days but you can 

learn much about the history by visiting the Derwent 

Pencil Museum, Keswick Museum, Force Crag Mine 

and the Threlkeld Quarry Mining Museum. Whilst 

copper and graphite mining are a thing of the past, 

slate mining does still take place at Honister. 

The natural beauty of the area has inspired many 

poets, writers and artists and it continues to inspire 

visitors to the area today. A growing love for the area 

led to the commencement of the early conservation 

movement. Indeed, Canon Rawnsley of Keswick was 

a founder of the National Trust. There are many 

well known landmarks around Keswick, such as the 

Bowder Stone in Borrowdale Valley, Ashness Bridge 

and Castlerigg Stone Circle that are now owned or 

protected by the National Trust.

Our Farming 

Heritage 

Many Scandinavian place names in the Keswick area 

such as 'thwaite' meaning clearing and 'keld' meaning 

spring are an indication of settlement by Norsemen 

in the 10th Century. The Cistercian religious order 

acquired large areas of land and introduced flocks of 

sheep to the district. Today Keswick’s surrounding 

valleys contain early farmhouses dating from the 17th 

and 18th centuries. The Borrowdale Valley contains 

several major Herdwick farms.

The Herdwick sheep is a familiar sight on the fells 

today, a hardy resilient animal able to withstand 

extremes of weather. The Herdwick is a special breed 

unique to Britain and the Lake District. They never 

stray from their 'heaf' - the area they were suckled as 

lambs. They are easy to recognise as they all have a 

white face and white legs with a coat which changes 

colour from black on a lamb to blue-grey as they 

mature. Originally brought over by the Vikings the 

Herdwicks are able to cope with exposed steep fellsides 

and the winter conditions. The wool is widely used 

for carpet making and knitwear and when blended 

with Swaledale wool is used to make loft insulation.

Derwentwater 

and Her Islands 

Rowing or sailing out to one of the islands on Derwentwater is a pastime 

that has been enjoyed by many over the years. There are four main islands, 

all of which are owned and managed by the National Trust: 

Derwent Island is the only inhabited island on the 

lake. It is likely that the island was first settled on 

by German copper miners in the 16th Century and 

was once owned by the monks of Furness Abbey. 

The house was built in the late 1770's by prominent 

local character, Joseph Pocklington. 

Now a private residence, owned by the National Trust 

it can only be viewed from afar, although on five days 

each year it does open to the public.

Lord’s Island was once 

home to the earls of 

Derwentwater until 

the Jacobite rebellion. 

There was a house on 

this island of which only 

the foundations remain 

today. Access to and from 

the island was by way of 

a drawbridge! 

St Herbert’s Island is 

the largest of the islands 

on Derwentwater. The 

island is named after the 

seventh century hermit 

St Herbert who brought 

Christianity to the area 

in AD685 and who took 

sanctuary on the island. 

The remains of a cell in 

the island's undergrowth 

are evidence of his 

hermitage. The island 

was also the inspiration 

for Beatrix Potter's 'Owl 

Island' in her Squirrel 

Nutkin story and was 

used in the 2016 Swallows 

and Amazons film. 

St Herbert's Island 

Rampsholme Island is smaller than the other main 

islands and is named after the wild garlic that grows 

on it. Then name is thought to derive from 'Hrafn's 

island' from Old Norse Hrafns holmr or 'wild garlic 

island' with the Old English hramsa. 

There are also 9 other smaller islands on Derwentwater 

including Park Ned, Otter Island and Otterbield Island.

Be sure to keep your eye out for the famous “floating” 

island which appears from time to time. Now you see 

it, now you don’t.

Catbells and 

Lakeshore 

Walking Route 

From the moment you step on the fell you can start to enjoy sensational 

panoramic views over Keswick, Derwentwater and Borrowdale. Add to this, 

views to the West of Newlands Valley and the Western Fells to make this walk 

unrivalled in spectacular views.

1. Follow the path up to the road away from the lake 

shore. From the cattle grid walk up the road 50 metres. 

The clear path leaves the road at the first bend and 

zig-zags steeply up the main breast of Skelgill Bank. 

The path levels for a short while and then climbs again 

to the summit of Cat Bells. There are some scrambly 

sections but nothing too technical. 

2. Take a well deserved rest and obligatory photo stop 

at the top before descending south to the saddle of 

Hawes Gate.

Distance / Approx 3.5 miles 

Time / Approx 3 hours 

Start / Hawes End Landing Stage 

Difficulty / Moderate 

3. From Hawes Gate, at the point where four paths 

meet, descend the steep but made up path to your left 

(East). Follow the path down and then take the path 

left towards a plantation of conifers. Here you join the 

main terrace path but your direction is downwards 

following a dry stone wall to the road. Follow the 

road left for approximately 50 metres and then turn 

right down to the lakeshore at Brandelhow Bay past 

the old mine workings. 

4. Now follow the lakeshore path through the wooded 

shore line, passing High Brandelhow Landing stage 

and then Low Brandelhow, eventually returning to 

the start point at Hawse End.

Time to Make 

a Splash 

Derwentwater rivals anywhere in the world for its sheer stunning 

location and beauty. There is so much you can do on it, around it 

and of course, in it. 

Paddle in It 

Or feed the ducks, or buy the kids a fishing net. 

The simplest of activities can make for a memorable 

day out. The lake shore is just perfect for those 

who want to enjoy some rest and relaxation. Visit the 

Derwentwater Foreshore, Brandelhow, Manesty, 

or perhaps Calf Close Bay?

Sail on It 

Hire a rowing boat, canoe, kayak, dragon boat - with 

a choice of water sport activity providers and water 

craft, there is plenty of fun to be had. Why not sail to 

one of the islands, explore and have a picnic? 

Swim in It 

Open water or wild swimming is becoming more 

popular but people have been swimming in 

Derwentwater for many years. With or without a 

wetsuit it is an exhilarating experience and one you 

should try at least once. 

Walk round It 

A round trip of 10 miles; stop for coffee and cake at 

one of the hotels and cafes you'll pass on the way. 

Rest on one of the shingle beaches and simply watch 

the world go by. If you don’t feel up to walking the 

whole way around, you can always hop on a bus or 

the launch.

Walk on the Fells Surrounding It 

Derwentwater is surrounded by peaks - Skiddaw, 

Walla Crag, Catbells and Castle Crag. You will enjoy 

a fabulous day out if you get onto the fells and you 

will find the views breath taking.

to different people. For some it is getting out onto 

the fells, mountain biking or perhaps wild camping. 

For others it might be open water swimming, rock

Keswick. You may have the confidence to go it alone 

but if you are looking to try something new or need 

some expert guidance then there are plenty of

range of excellent eateries. Whether you are looking 

for tea and a scone, fine dining or anything in between 

you won’t be disappointed. If you’re staying in one 

of our local B&B’s or Guest Houses you are sure to 

start the day well with a delicious home cooked 

breakfast. Many of our eateries pride themselves on 

using locally sourced produce of the highest quality. 

Don’t forget that we have our very own brewery in 

Keswick with a second brewery and a distillery only 

a stone's throw away.

Back to Nature / You only need to step outside 

the door and nature is all around you. Whatever the 

time of year, nature’s beauty is simply breathtaking. 

Enjoy the birdsong in Spring and Summer or visit later 

in the year to see the spectacular Autumn colours. 

There is plenty of wildlife around too, you never know 

what you might see when out for a walk. Perhaps a 

red squirrel or deer. Take a trip to Whinlatter Forest, 

Dodd Wood or Silver Meadows nature reserve, all of 

which are known for their varied wildlife. 

Relaxing / Sometimes you just need to kick back 

and relax. Enjoy a trip to the spa or beauty salon, 

take a stroll through the park, a trip on the 

Derwentwater Launch or have a glass of something 

chilled while looking out over the fells. We can also 

offer some retail therapy as Keswick has a fantastic 

range of unique, independent shops and galleries. 

Culture and Heritage / There is no shortage 

of culture and heritage in and around Keswick and 

there are plenty of places that you can visit to find 

out more. Take a trip to Castlerigg Stone Circle or 

the Keswick Museum. Learn about the history of 

pencil manufacture in Keswick or visit the historic 

house and gardens at Mirehouse. For something a 

bit different there is the Threlkeld Quarry and Mining 

Museum and don’t forget our wonderful Theatre 

and Cinema.

Who better to ask about all the great things for children to see and do in 

Keswick than the kids who live here. As part of a competition, the pupils of 

the five local primary schools were asked to design a leaflet and to include:

The Alhambra Cinema is the best place for seeing 

lots of different films. The cinema has a desk as you 

go in where you can buy sweets or popcorn or drinks. 

Sit back and relax and enjoy the film. 

Latrigg is a mountain located in Keswick. The summit 

looks over the whole of Keswick. Latrigg is ok for 

younger children too because it's not far up. 

Puzzling Place - Good for all weather, prepare to be 

amazed. How does that chair slide uphill? How can 

you be twice the size of your friends? prepare for your 

mind to be blown. 

Castlerigg Stone Circle - See if you can work out 

who built the stone circle... it's a mystery. 

Kong Adventure - Kong Adventure is a shop but hides 

a secret upstairs. There is a hard play area with castle, 

tunnels and a smoke breathing dragon for youngsters 

and a large climbing facility for everyone else.

Keswick Launch - is a boat that goes across 

Derwentwater. It sails past four islands. Beautiful 

views and good for all ages. You can travel all around 

the lake and stop at any jetty.

Getting to Keswick 

Getting Around Keswick 

By Road 

Keswick is easily reached via junction 40 of the 

M6 (Penrith) or the A1 and the A66. For a scenic 

route coming from the South leave the M6 at 

junction 36 and take the A591 through Windermere, 

Ambleside and Grasmere. Using motorways from 

Manchester it takes approximately 2 hours, whilst 

from the Midlands Keswick is around a 3 hour drive. 

The average journey time from London is 

approximately 5 1/2 hours. 

By Rail 

The nearest railway station to Keswick is Penrith, 

on the West Coast Main Line, a distance of 17 miles. 

A regular bus service, taking forty minutes, connects 

Penrith railway station with Keswick Bus Station. 

The historic Settle to Carlisle Railway line brings 

passengers from Yorkshire via the Eden Valley. 

By Taxi 

Taxis from Keswick will meet trains at railway 

stations and airports by prior arrangement.

By Coach 

National Express operates services to Keswick

By Air 

Keswick is within easy driving distance of several 

airports. All airports offer car hire and have easy 

access to the M6. At Manchester there is a train 

station at the airport. 

By Ferry 

For visitors from Europe there are sailings to Hull 

and Newcastle. The journey from Hull ferry teminal 

to Keswick by car is approximately 3 1/2 hours and 

from Newcastle is 2 1/4 hours. The journey from 

Stranraer ferry terminal for crossings to Ireland is 

3 1/2 hours. 

By Bike 

Cycling is an excellent way to explore the area. 

Several long distance cycle routes pass through 

the area including the C2C 71. There are a range 

of cycle trails in Whinlatter Forest. Take a look
