Brief overview of HyperionDev 

HyperionDev’s history dates back to 2012. Since 

our inception we’ve powered coding education for 

over 2000 students and growing. 

We have partnered with international tech 

companies including Google, Python Software 

Foundation, Oracle and the British Computing 

Society to ensure our courses match international 

standards. In 2016, our efforts to improve access to 

computer science skills were given a further boost 

from Google, which pledged its support. 

We also became the first Google Authorised 

Training Provider in EMEA in 2017. Today, our 

programs form part of Google’s international 

project of improving computer science and 

training for people from all walks of life across the 

globe.

MOVING FORWARD – MICRODEGREES AND HYPERDEGREES TO CODING BOOTCAMPS 

Up until 2017 our focus had been on providing 

microdegrees and hyperdegrees. Our 

microdegrees focused on upskilling students from 

beginner through to intermediate and advanced, 

while our hyperdegrees had a similar focus, but 

with a face-to-face tutoring element included. 

In October 2017, we shifted focus to online coding 

bootcamps, which aim to provide students with 

the immersive training experience that is needed 

to progress quickly. Today, we integrate scaled 

human review of code into our bootcamps, 

helping students around the world learn to code 

the right way. 

Our on-demand human code reviews help 

students to master industry concepts faster, while 

also helping them reach their outcomes sooner. 

Though intensive three to six month bootcamps 

in web, mobile and software development, we 

produce industry-ready developers equipped to 

start a new career in tech.

Whether new to coding or looking to formalise their training, we help our students switch careers and 

become industry-ready through our rigorous coding bootcamps. Join our students who have effectively

Software Engineer Bootcamp 

With no prior knowledge assumed, students go from newbie to full-fledged software engineer 

in this intensive bootcamp. Students learn to master engineering in Python and Java, as well as 

the software development principles, data structures, science and algorithms needed to kick off a 

rewarding career as a software engineer. They also receive a solid foundation in data science and 

machine learning technology as they progress in the bootcamp. 

Full Stack Web Developer Bootcamp 

Our students master both front and back end development by progressing through this 

immersive bootcamp and are equipped with the ability to build powerful database-driven web 

apps in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. 

Data Science Bootcamp 

Students get to future-proof their careers in tech work as they work their way through the 

Data Science bootcamp. During the bootcamp, students study the essentials of probability 

and statistics for data analytics and visualization while also learning about the intricacies of 

machine learning. 

Mobile Developer Bootcamp 

We make it possible for our students to enter the lucrative industry of mobile development and 

help them learn to craft and deploy world-class mobile applications. Students harness the full 

power of Java and Android to leave their mark on the industry.

UPSKILL IN 3 MONTHS WITH RIGOROUS SHORT COURSES 

Our intensive short courses are developed to help students master a skill in three months. When 

enrolling for our short course, students are paired with a mentor who will review their code and 

assignments on the day of submission. 

C# Programming Essentials 

This introductory course covers the essentials of the C# language and paves the way for deeper 

study of programming in this popular language. 

C++ Programming Essentials 

This comprehensive beginner’s guide to C++, a well-supported programming and popular 

programming language, teaches students how to program in the language considered to be 

the industry standard for software development. 

Java Software Developer 

Students receive an introduction to intermediate Java programming, where they’ll explore 

language-specific tools as they work through fairly complex programming tasks. 

Python Software Developer 

The course places an emphasis on problem solving through the development of algorithms to help 

address computational issues. Students build intermediate programming skills using Python.

Students’ journeys to becoming industry-ready coders won’t be one of isolation. Our mentor-led 

learning model ensures each student is supported by a dedicated mentor who is just as invested in their 

academic success as they are. 

In order for us to train students to international industry standards,making it easier for them to 

successfully change careers and step into a high-paying job, we offer high-touch mentor support and 

guidance. Students can expect a high level of support when interacting with our mentors, who are fulltime 

coding educators. 

OUR SUPPORT EXTENDS TO AFTER GRADUATION 

Our support doesn’t end when students graduate. In our commitment to help students achieve a swift 

career change, we ensure they grab the attention of our hiring partners and top tech employers. 

CODE IS REVIEWED BY EXPERTS 

We are the only coding education programme in the world to integrate code review into each step of 

the bootcamp. Every piece of code is hand reviewed by a human code reviewer within 48 hours. 

This educational model is proven to work. Students and their personal mentors work closely together, 

and course content is tailored to students’ needs, making it even easier to get a fast grasp of their 

chosen interests in tech.

WHY HUMAN CODE REVIEW MATTERS 

Generic error messages, delayed response times and one-size-fits-all coding bootcamps are the kiss of 

death for millions of coding students around the world. This is unfortunately the reality for most online 

programming courses. Through human code review and 1:1 mentorship, students’ code is debugged in a

This report explores the career outcomes of our past graduates over the last few years. We sent 

out a questionnaire to our graduate base to find out what our past students have been up to since 

completing a course with HyperionDev. From the respondent’s answers and the data we received, 

we were able to showcase the top outcomes of HyperionDev graduates. This report is a collection of 

findings from a sample of our total graduate database. 

We were pleased to find that 95% of our graduates have reached their career outcomes since 

graduation. This includes moving to a career in tech, starting their own business, upskilling in their 

current tech role or using their newfound skills in a non-tech job. 

One of the main outcomes expected by our graduates is that the course will prepare them to the extent 

that they can enter the industry soon after graduating. Through this report we have found that 72% of 

graduates who found a new tech got employed within 3 months of graduating. We do not directly 

place our graduates in jobs, however, our post-course support, which includes building a technical CV, 

preparing for interviews & introducing graduates to our hiring partners, has contributed to the large 

number of graduates finding a job after graduating. 

Another significant finding was that our graduates increased their salary post-course by R12k on 

average per month. That comes to an increase annually of over R144k which is reflective of industry 

demand and negotiating power of software developers in South Africa. This means that there is a huge 

return on investment when purchasing a HyperionDev course as a student would essentially be able 

to pay back the upfront tuition fees within less than two months due to the above expected salary 

increase. 

Our students can be found at esteemed companies such as EOH, FNB & Oracle and continue to find 

jobs in the tech space at large corporates right down to exciting startups. It is promising to see tangible 

results through this report and be able to prove that our high quality course content along with one-onone 

mentor support has contributed to the success of our students after graduating.

Graduate profiles 

Our graduates have taken either an online coding bootcamp or a short 

course. Our bootcamps are 6 months long and take students from beginner 

to advanced in either web, mobile or software development. These were 

launched in October 2017. Other students may have taken our short courses 

which are 3 months long with the outcome of upskilling. These have been 

on offer since inception. 

Courses & bootcamps with a curriculum 

revolving around software engineering 

have been the most popular, followed 

by web development. This is reflective 

of perceived industry demand and 

increase in potential income. There 

is only one bootcamp on offer that 

focuses on Android development and 

is in the minority due to it being a 

niche area of development. In the past 

we have also only had a short course 

in data science which is now being 

revamped and extended to become a 

6-month data science bootcamp which 

will be launched in early 2019.

Out of those who have emerged from their job cycle and responded to our survey, 61% of our graduates 

switched to a career in tech. A career in tech is defined as a job that involves web, mobile or software 

development skills in its day-to-day function. 

COURSES TAKEN 

The majority of students (66%) who 

switched to a career in tech took a 

software engineering course/bootcamp 

with us. This includes short courses 

that were popular in early 2017 such 

as the Certified Software Developer & 

Introduction to Programming Course. 

These have now been absorbed into 

the Software Engineer bootcamp which 

is our most popular bootcamp in 2018 

and has resulted in the most successful 

placement of graduates in tech careers 

due to industry demand.
