I am the one that
I am the Swiss Army Knife of mankind.
I am the one that gives birth
I have to nudge it with my heart,
I keep the bass rhythm of life moving.
From the Editor’s Desk
Welcome to this issue of E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive.
This month’s theme is: “The Power of GO!”
Have you ever come to a complete stop? Stopped going to school, stopped working on
your business, stopped taking care of yourself, stopped exercising or any series of
stops?
If you've ever stopped something with the intention of getting back to it, did you? The
odds of picking back up where you left off are never in your favor. The trick is to keep going.
Momentum is a powerful force when mixed with the right ingredients.
Every great accomplishment is riddled with challenge, opposition, preparation and a
number of obstacles “average” mindsets would succumb to. But YOU are not average so
we don’t expect YOU to quit or trick yourself into a soft quit aka “on hold” or suspension”.
Fortune favors the bold”.
Everyone has a busy schedule, so here are some other options to help you avoid stopping:
1) slow down, 2) recalculate you priorities, 3) stream line your processes or 4) call
in the troops for help. I'm going to circle that last option of calling in the troops. That can
be everything ranging from, passing out chores to the family, shared responsibilities,
carving out time for you just as if you were going into the office. And most importantly,
setting up boundaries.
Voids have a funny way of being filled. If you release yourself from something you wanted
to finish, that extra time will be filled up with something else-thus pushing you even
further from your goals. Don’t give space to anything that will delay, detour or distract
you. These little foxes kill, steal and destroy the birthing process of a vision.
Stay on point, keep focus and press towards the mark of excellence. The power of
momentum is in your favor.
I hope you enjoy this issue.
So my friend doesn’t have an
answering machine…she has a
questioning machine! When you
call her it says, “WHO ARE YOU
AND WHAT DO YOU WANT?!”
Well, I am Dr. Marissa, dubbed
and introduced as ‘the Asian
Oprah’ to the real Oprah by Dr.
Michael Bernard Beckwith! And
I want to fulfill my life purpose…
to be a Beneficial Presence on
the Planet and so my life work is
to splatter more hope and happiness
around the world as collateral
damage! An Organizational
Psychologist by academic
training, a Global Thought Leader
writing, Red-Carpet interviewing,
teaching, writing, singing,
MCing, moderating, meditating
and using every avenue possible
to be a channel of Peace
and an instrument of Love. And my favorite
job is being a mom, as you can
see from the picture. Yes, it’s a lot but I
have about 11,888 days left on the planet
plus or minus a couple thousand depending
on how long my body will last…
and I DON’T WANT TO WASTE ONE
DAY!!!
Now your turn…WHO ARE YOU AND
WHAT DO YOU WANT?
Are you are a company/organization
looking for an Inspirational Speaker or
Effectiveness Consultant?
Are you an individual looking for a Life Balance
or Executive Coach to help with more
Hope and Happiness?
Are you a TV/Radio show looking for a fabulous
guest?
Since the early
days of social
media, the question
most often
asked has been,
“What do I post?”
Today, as you’re looking
at your LinkedIn
profile (trying to dress it
up as you navigate
your career upstream)
or your Facebook or
Instagram feed (trying
to tone it down as you
decide to take your career
more seriously),
the core of that question
has not changed.
“What do I post that will
portray the image of
the me I want to be?” is
perhaps the mostasked
version from
people ready to take
their career seriously,
or seriously to the next
level. And that typically happens when your
Why does not align with what you thought
your passion was, or when your Passion
does not seem to align with the work you do,
and you are ready to make the effort required
to make a change.
Ok here’s the thing. It all starts with
you. Who you are. What you believe. What
you believe in. What you will always
choose. Because that’s how people come to
know you.
Page 42 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
People and life will test you and everyone
will take notice of how you respond. How
do you respond? Think about it because
your response is based on what you believe.
Your core values are the internal
compass that guides you through any decision.
You cannot waiver far from your own
true North and stay happy and sane. So,
you need to understand and be clear about
your own personal, unique guiding values.
Subscription link etmmedia.net
this far, you know the first step
is to be clear about who you are
and your intention. Regardless
of the channel, Facebook,
LinkedIn or Twitter, stick to you
and your authentic self. Share
content (either yours or someone
else’s) that demonstrate
the principles that you hold
dear. Help your readers and
viewers make the connection by
highlighting what attracted you.
Karé Anderson sums it up like
this and I haven’t heard a more
clear or articulate statement of
what I believe is our collective
strength:
Start building trust right now. People feel a
natural connection to the authentic. It’s not
hard to create what’s already there… you
just need to stay plugged in once you find it.
That’s how communities of followers are
built. Just as sure as the traveler looks for
firm ground, those you meet will feel more
secure when they feel you are consistently
real and authentic. In person, look folks in
the eye and make your handshake
firm. Online, you must do the same thing.
How do you accomplish it? If you’ve read
Page 43 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
“The stronger the signal we
send to ourselves of our specific,
highest purpose, the greater
the clarity we have about it, and
attention we instinctively give to
it. We are better able to describe
it, to recognize individuals,
situations, insights and other
resources that can support
us in serving it – and to be more
astute, caring supporters of others
in serving their higher purpose.”
‒ A Mutual Matters Credo
Preparation Principles
Be Vulnerable
Do other people see the real me or am I
wearing a mask obscuring who I really
am? What is holding me back from
portraying my authentic self in public?
Subscription link ETMMedia.net
Be real. Show your authentic self
to the world. Clarify your “specific,
highest purpose” and live it. Let
that self-shape your message and
share it as wildly as the cybersphere
will let you. Seek out
others who support and grow your
message. Use your powers for
good.
John Wayne famously said,
“Courage is being afraid but saddling
up anyway”. Let’s be
clear. Everybody is afraid of
something. We are all vulnerable
on some level. We create convoluted
techniques to hide the places
we are uncomfortable showing.
No matter how much we
“trust”, there are somethings we
are willing to reveal. But here’s
the thing – are we afraid of our
weaknesses or afraid of asking for
help? Is that simple action of revealing
ourselves the same as admitting
that we are less than perfect?
Nobody can do it all. Nowhere
in history has one person
done it alone. Everyone has a
story of a mentor or of someone who
helped and made a difference in their
life. That gift remains with each of us
for all of our lives regardless of the
success or failure we experience.
My personal Why is “I love, therefore
I am”. I want people I meet to
feel my heart. I want to make people
feel valued. In the spirit of poet
Maya Angelou, I want people to
they experience my work without
my being in the room. Everything I
Some people teach, some people
are care-givers, others seek to refine
processes or relationships. As sure
and as subtle as magnetism, we are
naturally drawn to certain experiences
and people. Often, we aren’t even
aware of it, but we strive to use our talents
in certain ways that make us
unique. Let’s be clear –what do you
Think back to
the times you
felt things
strongly.
Are there
common
elements of
these multiple
moments
that you
remember?
have to do; what can you not avoid expressing?
To clarify your Why, try a twopronged
approach. First, create a list of
the things that you enjoy doing. Focus on
things that you enjoy so much that time
seems to slip away without you realizing
it. As you review, modify and add to this
list, look out for things that you do without
thinking, that just seem to speak to something
inside you. I use the following questions
to ignite the process:
Think back to your happiest moments.
What were you doing? Who were
you with? What made it pleasurable?
• Play your life like a movie. Think back
to school events, summer camp,
church, activities and play in your
neighborhood. Think back to the times
you felt
Page 46 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
things strongly. Are there common elements
of these multiple moments that you remember?
Think in reverse. What are the things that
you find most hateful and disturbing. What
makes you mad and leaves you frustrated.
Now think about the opposite of those
things. You may find that your Why crystalizes
in front of your eyes.
• What do you do when you have free time?
What do you do when you are bored?
• What is exciting? What relaxes you? Why?
• When you don’t have any pressing obligations
or when the most pressing obligation
is to do something for yourself, what do you
choose?
• Do you like to solve problems? Do you go
outside and what do you do?
Subscription link etmmedia.net
•Is it more about the event or the fact
that you have to concentrate and think
about something other than your
day? Do you do it alone or with people?
•
How do you feel after? Why? Do you
have new energy or do you just burn off
the stress?
What are your hobbies? What about
these activities do you like? What about
them make you the most comfortable/at
ease?
Remember the last time you “lost track of
time”. What were you doing? Who were
you with? What do you remember that
was enjoyable or that made you feel that
the time flew by?
Trigger the second prong while you work
on your list. Ask your friends and others
who know you well to describe what talents
they think about when they think of
you.
Try to get them to express what they
think of as your unique capabilities.
Think of your own friends – who do you
call on to help you get organized, who is
helpful when you need to brainstorm,
who is good at simplifying a problem, so
you can implement actions? It is often
easier to see qualities in others than in
ourselves and you can use your friends
perspectives to help clarify your own
thinking. If you include family, friends,
work colleagues and/or team mates you
will get a broad perspective that may
help you hone in on the Why that drives
you.
Laura: Hi Lisa. Thank you so much
for speaking with me about Divorce
Mediation today. So your Website,
Mediationisbest.com, is that more
than just a URL?
Lisa: Yes Laura. It is my philosophy
after practicing law for over 21
years, that alternative dispute resolution,
which is really mediation and
arbitration, is more cost efficient,
faster, and can even be less stressful
for participants than litigation. I
represent clients in divorce actions
in court and conduct divorce mediations
on a daily basis so I can say
this first hand. So, yes, I do believe
Mediation is Best! In fact, I always
try to explain the option of mediation
to people who contact my office for
representation in a divorce action
because I honestly believe that it is
the best process for most people.
Laura: When you say “most people”,
are there some couples for whom Divorce
Mediation is not an option? Or maybe not
the right option?
Lisa: Absolutely. When I first speak with
potential mediation participants, I do ask if
there has been any allegations by either
side of domestic violence, which can be
physical, verbal or financial, or substance
abuse by either party. This is because if
there is an imbalance of power, which is
true in the case of domestic violence, mediation
is not the correct process. Additionally,
if there is substance abuse, I have
concerns about the person being able to
participate in the process in a constructive
fashion, and, in the end, I cannot have
someone sign an agreement if they are
Page 58 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
under the influence of a substance that
makes them unable to understand what they
are signing. In those limited circumstances, I
do believe that the adversarial system potentially
offers people more protection.
Laura: How is Mediation different?
Lisa: The easiest way to explain the mediation
process is to compare and contrast it,
with the more well-known adversarial or “two
lawyer” system. With the adversarial process,
the parties each hire their own attorneys,
and those attorneys will counsel their
respective client and discuss heir client’s position
with each other outside of the presence
of the clients. Often times, the conflict can
become influenced by the posturing of the
Subscription link etmmedia.net
way more “emotional heat” than the Husband
ever intended. In mediation, all the
parties are in the same room, talking to
each other with the mediator present to
assist them in having constructive, meaningful
conversations that can lead to a settlement.
There is no filtering of the message
from one party to the other. And, as
Mediator, I can actually assist the parties
in removing the emotional components of
the discussion and keep them focused on
the facts at hand. Of course, the other factor
is cost. It is probably five times less
than protracted litigation. Plus the “fees”
are much more predictable and the parties
have more control over the costs and
when they pay them as compared to litigation.
Laura: So what exactly is Divorce Mediation
and how does it work?
attorneys, and can even become blown
out of proportion. I liken this to the game
of telephone I used to play as a childwhere
one person starts a message by
whispering into the next person’s ear. By
the time the message gets to the last
person, it has completely mutated into a
different statement. The change can occur
subtly as it passes from one person
to the other. So if Husband tells his attorney
he wans his baseball card collection
as soon as possible, then his attorney
is in a heated conflict about another
issue of the case with Wife’s attorney
and drops in the information about the
baseball cards, the Wife’s attorney may
the relay the message to his client with
Page 59 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Lisa: We typically meet in my conference
room once a week for one to two hours,
until we have covered all of the pertinent
issues, including custody and parenting time
(visitation), child support, spousal support
(maintenance) and equitable distribution. At
that point, I draft a “Proposed Settlement
Agreement” based on all of the discussions
had by the parties. We go over the Agreement
in a follow up meeting so that the parties understand
it, and then the parties are given the
opportunity to take the Settlement Agreement
to have it reviewed by independent counsel of
their choice. This is not required, but I always
give participants the option of doing so. Once
the Proposed Settlement Agreement is finalized
on consent of the parties, I draft and file
the papers for the parties to obtain an Uncontested
Divorce.
Subscription link ETMMedia.net
Laura: What about people
with young children. Do you
resolve custody and visitation
issues?
Lisa: When I meet with participants
with children for the
first time at a consultation, I
always tell them that their
children are actually “the
most important people not in
the room”. This resonates
throughout the entire process
and sometimes I have to remind
them once things are
underway. During the mediation
process, before the
participants have filled out
any financial forms, or provided
any documents, we
discuss custody and parenting
time, which is the terminology
I prefer to use. I
mean, a parent should not be
“visiting” with his/her child,
right? They are parenting
the child. So we assign parenting
time. First I will explain
the principals of residential and legal
custody to the participants so they understand
the terms. And then the parties
have a conversation, that I help lead if necessary,
discussing, quite simply, where the
children should live (residential custody)
and how important, non “day-to-day” decisions
should be made for the children by
the parents (legal custody). I have, quite
fortunately, found that most of the time, this
decision comes quite quickly to the participants.
Then we hammer out a detailed
parenting time schedule involving weekday
and weekend parenting time, as well as
holidays. It is here that I
Page 60 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
find mediation so wonderful as we have the
ability to really craft a schedule that is tailored
for the parties and the children’s specific
circumstances. This is especially true
for individuals who may not have a typical 9-
5 job situation.
Laura: Do your Mediation clients ever end
up in Court?
Lisa: As I tell participants in the initial consultation
in my office, my goal is to keep the
parties out of Court today and every tomorrow
after. The parties are made aware that
nothing, no issue, is too big or small to
Subscription link etmmedia.net
discuss during a meeting. Often times the
parties are unable to get to the bigger issues
because they become hung up in the
smaller, day to day conflicts that arise, especially
if the parties are still living in the
same home. But this is true in litigation as
well. In Mediation, I encourage the parties,
when they first walk in for a meeting,
to let me know if there are any urgent matters
or conflicts to discuss before we get to
what I may have on my list as the next issue
to discuss and resolve. Things can
get petty. I have had couples who are hiding
each other’s toiletries
and turning off the power when the
other is trying to cook dinner. That
type of “War of the Roses” (one of
my favorite movies, by the way) behavior
does not lend itself to mediation.
I have lost a few along the
way in those types of situations.
But those are few and far between.
Fortunately, most of the time the
participants I work with are committed
to the Mediation process, and
understand that this means they
have to be civil to each other. Of
course I do have parties get emotional
during meetings, but I have
methods of assisting them through
that. In every Mediated Settlement
Agreement, I include language that
the parties are committed to returning
to Mediation if they need to
modify the Agreement or if a conflict
arises. This, as I explain to them, is
because none of us have a crystal
ball, and circumstances can change
in the future. And I have had people
return to make adjustments
“Post Judgment” (after the Divorce
Judgment is signed and entered)-
often years later. The process then is the
same as before. We discuss, I draft, they
sign and file the Modification to Settlement
Agreement as pro se litigants.
Laura: But what if the issue that comes up
in Post Judgment is urgent-like a party isn’t
paying Child Support? Are they prevented
from going to Court if it is absolutely necessary?
Lisa: Not at all. The participants in my Mediations
are well aware that Mediation is a
Page 61 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Subscription link ETMMedia.net
voluntary process. During the initial Divorce
Mediation, people are free to stop if they
want. If they stop the process because of
reconciliation, I wish them luck and send
them on their way, hopeful for their success
at a second chance-it has happened, though
it is rare. If they are heading in the direction
of litigiation, I may try one last meeting to see
if we can resolve the conflict without Court, if
they are willing, because I know what is in
store for them. But the choice is theirs and I
cannot and will not stop them from going to
Court if that is what they feel they need to do.
In the Settlement Agreements I draft as Mediator,
I make it clear that Mediation is not a
“precondition” to litigation and if an emergency,
such as non-payment of support arises, a
party is not precluded from going to Court on
an emergency basis, or otherwise. Mediation
is never a precondition to litigation. But I do
want the parties to think twice before turning
Page 62 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
to litigation if that is possible, and to return
to the Mediation process to address any
changes or conflicts that develop. And I
have been pleasantly surprised to see that
happen, for example, in cases where circumstances
for custody and parenting time
change because a party wants to move. I
am happy to say I have been able to assist
people in resolving these types of issues
which would cost them tens of thousands
of dollars to litigate in Court for a fraction of
the cost and, more importantly, minimal adverse
impact on the lives of the parties and
the children because of the parties’ willingness
to work together in the Mediation process.
Laura: Do you ever do a Separation Agreement
for people rather than going forwardto
Divorce? And why would someone do a
Separation Agreement rather than go forward
with getting the actual Divorce?
Subscription link etmmedia.net
Lisa: Yes. One of the things we discuss
during the Mediation is whether the parties
want a Separation or to go all the way
through with a Divorce. The two most common
reasons given for Separation vs. Divorce
are: (1) the concern of one party losing
health insurance benefits upon divorce,
and (2) the parties are not sure they want
the divorce, but they need something in
place to secure finances and, often, custody
and visitation. We discuss the pros and
cons, and the parties make an informed decision
together, as they do with every other
issue.
Laura: Any crazy stories to share?
Lisa: Actually, when I was first doing Divorce
Mediation, I worked for a firm that had
me travel to different offices he rented
around Long Island to meet with the clients.
I remember one office had all of these baseball
bats in glass boxes hanging on the
Page 63 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
walls everywhere, including the conference
room. All I could think was that if things got
heated, this was an invitation for disaster! I
never really understood that. But now it’s
kind of funny and fortunately, they were a
nice calm couple.
Laura: Lisa, thank you so much for that overview.
Hopefully people will see that Mediation
is an option for their Divorce.
Lisa: Thank you Laura. Its always a pleasure
to talk with you! And hopefully your readers
will see why I believe Mediationisbest is more
than just a URL!
Laura: And finally Lisa, would you say that
the process of Divorce is black and white or
50 Shades of Grey?
Lisa: 50 Shades, definitely. Every situation is
different. Every personality. But that’s what
keeps it interesting, right Laura?
Laura: Absolutely.
You’ve probably thought to
yourself in a not too distant
past, of how young you
were and that you didn’t
have to worry about, save
or plan for retirement. So
how is that working out for
you?
Just as the days fly by,
years and decades fly by
just as fast and before you
know it, you’re wallowing in
a sea of regret of why you
didn’t start saving for retirement
sooner. Not only did
you not save any money for
retirement, but you’ve
racked up an insurmountable
load of debt, essentially
taking many steps backwards
towards achieving
your retirement goals. Of
course, I’m guilty of this
myself, but many times we
try to sustain a lifestyle we
cannot afford by making
purchases on credit knowing
we are not able to pay it
off at the end of the month.
Once this type of spending
pattern begins, it will continue
to snowball, building up ever larger
debts for many years to come.
Don’t worry: Regardless of what stage in
life you’re in, the good news is, it’s never
too late to begin the journey towards a
comfortable retirement. Don’t dwell on the
past. However, you must not procrastinate
for another day as I will discuss some of
the most important concepts to understand
Don’t worry:
Regardless of
what stage in
life you’re in, the
good news is,
it’s never too
late to begin the
journey towards
a comfortable
retirement.
and apply, when it comes to retirement planning.
Multiply by 25 Rule – This rule is a tool to
give you an idea of how much to save up depending
on how much you need for annual
spending during your retirement years. For
example, if you want to withdraw $60,000 per
year, you will need to save up $1,500,000
($60,000 X 25). However, if you can live
comfortably withdrawing just $48,000 per
Page 80 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Take advantage of retirement
savings vehicles
that have tax benefits
such as employer
sponsored 401K, Roth
IRA and Traditional IRA
Accounts.
year ($12,000 less per year), you will only
need to save up $1,200,000 ($48,000 X 25).
What this means is that you need to save
$300,000 for every $12,000 in annual withdrawal
during retirement. In other words, if
you can reduce your spending by $1000 per
month during retirement ($12,000 annually), it
can help you avoid lots of stress of having to
save significantly more during your working
years. After all, it’s always easier to spend
less money than to have to save up more.
Employer 401K
Match – If you work for
an employer that offers
a 401K Match, always
take advantage of it. If
your employer will
match up to 3%, then
you must first contribute
at least 3% of your income
in order to benefit
from your employer’s
contribution. However, if
you only contribute 2%,
then your employer will
only contribute 2%
which means you’re
leaving some free money
on the table. Abandoning
any amount of
free money over the
course of your career
can mean tens of thousands
of dollars in lost
savings over the long
term. In addition to contributing up to
the amount your employer will match,
you should, if possible, contribute as
much more as you can afford to.
Roth IRA - Contributions to Roth IRA
are not tax deductible. However, any
interest, dividends or distributions
earned are tax free, as long as nothing
Page 81 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
is withdrawn before the age
of 59 ½ at which time it may
be taxed at the federal and
state level, as well as an
early withdrawal penalty assessed
by the IRS. There
are certain situations when
you can withdraw before
age 59 ½ without the penalty,
such as; if you are a firsttime
home buyer and you
need some of the funds for
a down payment, or, if used
for higher education. The
Roth IRA also has income
requirements which must be
met before you’re allowed to
contribute.
For 2017, in order for you to
qualify to contribute to a
Roth IRA, your modified adjusted
gross income should
be < $186,000 if you are
married filing jointly. However,
you can contribute a
reduced amount if your income
is ≥ $186,000 but <
$196,000. Once your modified
adjusted gross income
is ≥ $196,000, then you will not be able to
contribute to the Roth IRA.
For single filers, your modified adjusted
gross income should be
effect of compounding interest
for the amount that was
cashed out for the life of the
investment. For example,
cashing out a $50,000
401K savings will only
leave you with $32,500 if
taxed at 25% plus a 10%
penalty. It is advisable that
once you leave an employer,
to roll over your 401K to
a traditional IRA account so
you have the ability to keep
track of how it’s doing as
well as the benefit of not
having all of your investments
scattered which
makes it difficult to track.
Compound Interest – Compound interest
occurs when interest is initially added
to the principal, and any future interest is
then earned on principal and any previously
accumulated interest. Once you understand
theavoid the temptations to cash out
your 401K every time you leave an employer.
benefits of compounding interest, you
will Any amount you cash out before the
age of 59 ½ will be assessed a federal and
state tax and a 10% IRS penalty which can
quickly add up to a significant amount of
savings considering it will also lose the
Page 83 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Rule of 72 – You may
have heard of this term, but
just in case you’re not familiar
with it, it is a way to
determine what length of
time it will take your investment
to double depending
on the rate of return. For
example, you invest $100
at 4%, it will take 18 years for your $100 to
double into $200 (72 = 4 X 18). However, if
you invest $100 at 9% interest, then it will
only take 8 years to double to $200 (72 = 9 X
8). I’m not encouraging you to invest your
hard-earned money on risky investments that
promise high returns, but to encourage you
to start your savings early as most safe investments
have lower returns but takes a
longer period of time to double.
Pay off all debts and credit cards - The
correct way to use credit cards is to pay off
the entire balance at the end of the month.
Of course, there might be emergency .
Subscription link ETMMedia.net
cut your
spending
such as
reducing
your
visits to
the nearest
coffee shop
from 3
times a day
to only
once in the
morning.
situations where you may not be able to, but
try to pay it off as early as possible. Getting
in perpetual debt will only set you back on
your retirement goals because the interest
you’re paying every month for years and
years, could be compounding your retirement
savings.
Reduce Spending - This advice may
sound a bit redundant but I cannot emphasize
how important it is, as our monthly income
is usually limited and the only way to
increase your savings is to decrease your
spending. There are many simple ways to
gradually cut your spending such as reducing
your visits to the nearest coffee
shop from 3 times a day to only once in
the morning. Once you’ve got that habit
in control, reduce those visits from 7 times
a week to only 3 or 4. It may sound like
an enormous feat to conquer but if you
make those changes one small step at a
time, you’ll thank yourself later in retirement.
Once you’ve put these concepts to practice,
you will be well on your way to retiring
comfortably
Chocolate Pairings
By Laurie Forster, The Wine Coach®
Chances are you are going to be indulging in
some chocolate this Cupid’s Day, whether from
your Valentine or that you bought to treat yourself.
This might lead you to the question, “What
wine should I pair with my chocolate hearts and
truffles?
It’s important to note that a good pairing will depend
on the type of chocolate you’re savoring.
Overall, you want to match bolder, darker chocolates
with bigger wines and lighter, sweeter chocolates,
like white or milk, with lighter wines. In my
opinion, sweet and fortified wines work better with
chocolate than dry wines. Before you start writing
letters to disagree with me—I do acknowledge
that there are some dry red wines, like Cabernet
or Zinfandel that can work wonderfully.
Here are my suggested pairings for dark, milk
and white chocolate. All you need to do is invite
the right person and add some love.
Dark
There are actually several great
choices when choosing a perfect
partner for dark chocolate. One of
my favorites is Brachetto d’Acqui
from the Piedmont region of
northwestern Italy. Made
primarily from the
Brachetto grape, this red
sparkling dessert wine
has intense raspberry flavors
with the perfect
amount of sweetness for
dark chocolate. Think of it
as a raspberry sauce for
your chocolate. The bubbles
also act to cleanse your palate before
each new bite of dark chocolate.
The traditional favorite of chocolate
lovers is Port and I especially like
Tawny Port with chocolate.
Tawny Ports are known for
their dark rich flavors of raisins,
toffee, caramel and nuts,
which happen to all be great
toppings for chocolate. These
ports are named after their tawny
color, which is obtained by aging
the wine in oak. True Port wines
are fortified wines from Portugal
(called Porto), but great Tawny Port-style wines are
made in Australia, the United States and South Africa.
Another fortified wine that is a great partner with dark
chocolate is Banyuls. This dessert wine is made
from the red grape, Grenache, in the Roussillon
region of southern France. Like port, this wine is fortified
with a distilled spirit made from grapes. This
fortification takes place before fermentation is complete
which leaves residual sugar (i.e. sweetness)
in the wine. With a rich texture and flavors of raisins,
plums, mocha and black cherries, this is
the perfect partner to dark
chocolate or, to enjoy all
by itself!
Page 102 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Subscription link etmmedia.net
Milk & White
White and milk chocolate require more
delicate pairings. These are sweeter
chocolates and don’t work with dry
wines like dark chocolate does. One
of my favorite pairings for these types
of chocolates is Moscato d’Asti.
Semi-sparkling or frizzante,
this sweet white bubbly is
made from the Moscato Bianco
grape in Piedmont Italy,
just like its red relative
Brachetto. Perfumed floral aromas
mix with flavors of ripe
peach and pear. Moscato’s acidity
keeps it from seeming too
sweet and is a nice contrast to
the creaminess of these chocolates.
Also, due to its having a
lower alcohol content than most
wines (5-7%), it’s a great choice
for the end of a meal.
Another great partner for white or milk chocolate
is a fortified Muscat wine. There are some great
French examples such as Beaumes de Venise
and Muscat de Riveslates which are the
classic standards. New world countries make
their own versions of these Muscat based dessert
wines, including South Africa, California and Australia.
In Australia, they call dessert wines, like
Muscats, “stickies” referring to their full, rich
consistency. I especially like the Australian
Muscats coming from the Rutherglen region
because they are not only
delicious but also a good
value. Muscats
are sweet and full bodied with the aromas of
rose petal, ginger and orange as well as raisins.
This Valentine’s Day, no matter whether you
are going out or staying in, there is a wine to
sip with your favorite chocolate indulgence.
Just take into consideration the type of chocolate
when choosing the right partner in
order to ensure that the two complement
each other. Just like for every person
there is a soul mate; for every chocolate
there is the right wine.
Try this pairing for
White Chocolate…
Ceretto Santo Stefano
Moscato d’Asti (Piedmont,
Italy)
Capitalize on the Moscato craze! Fruity,
Fizzy and aromatic, this Moscato will
make them as giddy as their first crush.
Delicious with every sip and only 5.5%
alcohol, this is a great lunch or
brunch wine, too. Pair with
your white chocolate
treats for a heavenly
combination.
Page 103 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Subscription link ETMMedia.net
Try these pairings for
Dark Chocolate…
Banfi Rosa Regale Brachetto
d’Acqui (Piedmont, Italy)
One whiff of the Banfi Brachetto brings
images of roses and raspberries to
mind. This sweet sparkler has a clean
finish that is perfect for chocolate.
The acidity of this wine also makes it
a good paring for spicy
Asian dishes or salads
with berry vinaigrettes.
Warre’s
“Otima” 20
year Tawny
Port (Portugal)
Try this pairing for
Milk Chocolate…
Yalumba Museum Muscat
(Australia)
Made from the red and pink varieties
of Muscat, this “sticky” from
Yalumba is the perfect sip with
milk chocolate. Yalumba is one
of the oldest family run wineries
in Australia and delivers great
value across all its wines. This
sweet Muscat is amber in color
with ginger and orange aromas
and a touch of rose petal.
Aged for 20 years
in seasoned oak
barrels, this tawny
port has perfectly
balanced tannins and acids
making each sip bright and elegant.
Flavors of nuts and raisins
make it a great
match for chocolate
mousse or chocolate
Domaine de la Rectorie
Banyuls (Roussillon, France)
Made from slightly raisinated Grenache
grapes, this is a definite
soul mate for chocolate! This fortified
wine is a great crossover for
people who already know and love
ruby Port. The Domaine de la Rectorie
Banyuls is full and smooth
with flavors of red berries and a
touch of spice.
Ingrid here, your chocolate eating,
wine drinking health coach, to help
you create a more balanced lifestyle
so that you can shine, not just
in one area of your life, but in all areas
of your life!
But first, why am I talking about living
a more balanced lifestyle?
We as women spend a lot of time
compartmentalizing the various areas
of our lives: relationships, career,
money, health… but we all
know that if one area is out of
whack, our WHOLE life is affected.
There’s a saying I have, “How you
do one thing, is how you do everything”.
Imagine making tons of money and
being in a loving, happy marriage or
relationship BUT you have no time
to exercise. Pretty soon your appreciation
for your flow of money and
love is diminished because your
body is not getting the exercise it
needs to feel alive and energized.
That’s why it’s so important to think
of your life as one holistic pie, and
make the decision to put your energy
into making every piece of that
pie as yummy as possible.
So, what would create a more balanced
lifestyle look like?
Creating a more balanced lifestyle
would mean taking a really good
look at All areas of your life: relationships,
career, money, exercise,
health…making decisions
about what is and what isn’t working
in each area.
Sometimes the reason we stay
stuck in unhealthy or unhappy areas
of our lives is because it’s
easier in a way, to stay stuck in
what’s familiar, rather than find
the creativity and energy to make
the changes needed to improve
our quality of life and move into
the unknown.
In my coaching practice, I cover
all of the areas mentioned above,
but today I’m going to share with
you a couple of my favorite things
that will contribute to having a
more balanced lifestyle in the areas
of creating more energy,(which
we all could use) and calming the
mind to create more focus
throughout your day.
Let’s start with first thing in the
morning.
So, not everyone has 15-30 extra
minutes every morning to do yoga
poses or some sort of exercise to
get the juices flowing, but I bet we
could all squeeze in 3 minutes
first thing, even before we get out
of bed.
Step 1* First set a happy alarm 5
minutes earlier than usual. Your body responds
to messages that you give
it, so give it a happy ring to wake
up to!
Download your favorite tune or
nature sound and use that as your
happy alarm sound. Set it for just
5 minutes earlier than usual, that
all. Your body will thank you!
Step 2* Start your body stretch
as soon as you open your eyes.
Often times in the morning, once
we’re up we get distracted by
emails, text messages, or racing
to get that first cup of coffee. So,
carpe diem, seize the day by starting
your stretch even before you
get out of bed!
Lying down, simply stretch your
legs out and reach your arms
overhead and REALLY stretch
your body, or sit up in bed and do
the same, this time stretching your
arms to the ceiling.
Step 3* Lastly, finish your
body stretch right next to your
bed. The key is to honor these 3
minutes you have set aside to
stretch your body.
The trick is to FOCUS your attention inward,
breathe DEEP inhales and exhales, and
reach up for the sky. You can clasp your fingers
overhead to keep them together to
deepen the stretch.
How does this stretching boost energy you
ask?
Page 110 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
ll, you know how sometimes on a chilly
rning when you start your car, you let it run
a couple of minutes to warm up and get
gas circulating?
e same is true for our bodies. All they really
ed to get going is a little kick start for the
y, and a simple stretch as soon as you
ke up will do it.
et you will feel different immediately, and
t the boost of energy that you need to start
other area that is essential to living a balanced
lifestyle is calming your body
and mind.
Here are 2 super ways to calm
your body and mind throughout the
day. They will help keep you focused
and energized as you go
through your day.
Step 1 can be done right in your
office, or if you live in the LA area
like myself, it can be REALLY
helpful if you’re stuck in our
wonderful traffic! Lol
Step 1* Put both feet firmly
on the ground, sit up straight
with your shoulders pulled
back to open up your heart,
close your eyes, (obviously
not while driving) and take
full, DEEP breaths, in and
out, in and out, in and
out. Shoot for 10 times.
When you open your
eyes, notice how different
your body feels.
Do you feel calmer,
clearer, more
relaxed?
Now that you’ve calmed your body, are you
ready for step 2? Don’t worry, it’s just as easy.
So, you’ve heard of positive affirmations right?
Well, I believe they actually work. I use them
every day!
Why? Because your body is not going to do
what you tell it to do unless your mind believes
it first!
Think of a short, sweet sentence that I like to
call your MOTIVATIONAL MANTRA.
Here are a few examples to get you started:
I choose to be energized.
I breathe in calm, and exhale stress
I am committed to having a wonderful day
Choose one that resonates with you or change
up the words to create your own. Write it on
sticky notes and stick them on the top of your
computer or bathroom mirror. Then read it or
memorize it and say it out loud to yourself at
least 6 times a day, every day, and see what
happens.
How will this contribute to living a
more balanced life?
Well, put it this way, water will not flow
through a blocked pipe. Similarly, your energy
or life force is not going to flow well if
you’re all tensed up, agitated or on guard.
So with step one, you’re learning to quiet
your mind, calm your nervous system and
save energy for you to use later when you
really need it.
And with step 2, you’ll be amazed at the results
over time if you say your mantra over
& over again. You’ll find that your mind will
start to believe it and your body will follow.
Page 111 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Why? Because that’s the
way our minds work.
They start to believe what we tell
them to believe. It really is that
simple.
In my coaching practice, I
use what’s called the
wheel of life. It
helps my clients
identify which
areas of their
lives are out
of balance.
I’ve included
a diagram
of the
wheel so
that you can
try it for
yourself.
Look at each
section and
place a dot on the
line marking how satisfied
you are with each
area of your life.
A dot nearer the center of the circle indicates
dissatisfaction, while a dot placed
towards the outside of the circle indicates
ultimate happiness. When you have
placed a dot on each of the lines,
connect the dots to see your wheel
of life.
As a wellness coach
and educator for
over 15 years, I see people
every day who are on a quest to maintain
a healthy weight, improve their
overall health and well-being and prevent
and slow down the progression of
degenerative diseases like heart disease,
diabetes and cancer. The question
is “where do you start”? We want
to educate and empower our clients so
that they will be able to heal themselves
using complementary therapies
and mind-body integration.
We like to start with the basics… internal
cleansing (detoxification) and nutrition.
Detoxing involves reducing the
intake of toxins and improving elimination
through diet and body therapies
such as colon hydrotherapy, infrared
bodywraps, skin brushing, massages,
saunas and when needed, detox supplements
designed for specific organs.
Chemicals, refined foods, sugar, caffeine,
alcohol, tobacco, and many
drugs should be avoided to reduce the
toxic load. Everyone can benefit from
internal cleansing. Every day our bodies
are exposed to toxins and pollutants
in the air we breathe, the water
we drink, and the food we eat. When
waste and toxins can be eliminated
from the body, there is no problem. But
when toxins build up faster than they
can be eliminated or when the elimination
systems are not performing, these toxins
can accumulate and create dis-ease all
over the body.
Page 116 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
(Lungs). So the first step is to improve every
elimination channel in the body to help
with detoxification. The body will produce
energetic and metabolic waste that translates
into physical levels of detoxification
that need to move through the elimination
have the least resistance to the toxic waste
material. It is also very important to listen
to your body. We often ignore signs and
symptoms when the body is giving us an
indication that something is not quite right.
For instance, feeling bloated is often a sign
of a digestive issue. Chronic gas can be a
symptom of an underlying digestive condition,
like irritable bowel syndrome or lactose
intolerance or it could be as simple as
drinking with meals, or not chewing your
foods thoroughly. There are a lot of ways
to describe excessive gas: burping, belching,
flatulence, and bloating. Bloating is
used to describe the sensation of excess
stomach gas that has not yet been released.
A great majoritiy of our clients
come to BodyClenz initially because of gas
and bloating.
channels. When the elimination channels
are overloaded, they become inefficient
and congested. The toxins are forced into
the bloodstream and settle into those organs
and tissues which
Page 117 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Colon hydrotherapy (aka colonics) is not a
cure, but is a valuable therapy for a variety
of colon issues, including reducing the
buildup of gas in the colon. Naturopaths
believe that 90% of
all illnesses are directly or
indirectly related to toxicity
in the bowel. By stripping down
the old toxic mucus lining from the colon
and flushing out excessive gas and waste,
the number one source of disease in the
body could be reduced. A more efficient
means of waste elimination and nutrient absorption,
both of which are essential to any
lasting healing process, can be aided by
colon hydrotherapy. Then the friendly bacteria
will be produced to keep the colon
safe from putrefaction and further autointoxication.
Subscription link ETMMedia.net
Some possible
signs of a toxic colon
are: constipation,
gas and bloating,
coated tongue,
bad breath, allergies,
indigestion,
backache, abnormal
body odor, low
energy dark circles
under the eyes,
cold hands and
feet, blood pressure
up and down,
low sex drive, disturbed
and restless
sleep, menstrual
problems, or swelling
of legs.
Many surgeons and
physicians are beginning
to understand
the importance
of bowel
care in the prevention
of disease.
THE NEXT
STEP
The most important way of strengthening
your body’s natural defenses is to
improve your diet and drink a sufficient
amount of water. Eating a diet with
plenty of fruits and vegetables has
been linked to improved health, and for
good reason. Veggies and fruits are
loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber,
and antioxidants, which have been
shown to protect against chronic diseases.
Page 118 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Medical science has proven beyond a shadow of
doubt that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables can
improve your odds of avoiding diseases like that.
There are at least nine different families of fruits
and vegetables, each with potentially hundreds
of different plant compounds that are beneficial
to health. Eat a variety of types and colors of
produce in order to give your body the mix of nutrients
it needs. This not only ensures a greater
diversity of beneficial plant chemicals but also
creates eye-appealing meals.
The most
important
way of
strengthening
your
body’s natural
defenses
is to improve
your diet and
drink a
sufficient
amount of
water.
A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower
blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease
and stroke, prevent some types of cancer,
lower risk of eye and digestive problems,
and have a positive effect upon blood
sugar, which can help keep appetite in
check. Eating non-starchy vegetables and
fruits like apples, pears, and green leafy vegetables
may even promote weight loss.
Their low glycemic loads prevent blood sugar
spikes that can increase hunger.
Leading health advocacy organizations
like the National
Cancer Institute and the
American Heart Association
all recommend eating 7 to 13
servings of fresh raw fruits
and vegetables every day.
Lately, I have been focusing
more on my own diet and realized
that my diet was not
meeting that recommendation.
A friend introduced me
to a product called
JuicePlus+. Juice Plus+
products are made from the
juice powder concentrates
and oils from more than 40
different fruits, vegetables
and grains and comes in capsule,
gummy or a powder
form. While Juice Plus+ isn’t
a substitute for eating fruits
and vegetables, our whole
food-based products support
a healthy diet by offering a
much wider variety of naturally
occurring vitamins, along
with antioxidants and phytonutrients
found in fruits and
vegetables. Every Juice
Plus+ product is made from
quality ingredients grown
farm fresh, providing the natural nutrients
your body needs.
I recommend JuicePlus+ to anyone who will
listen because it's such an easy way to make
sure that they get more nutrition from fresh
fruits and veggies into the diet every single
day. Good health is the result of lots of
things including a good diet, exercise and
even getting a proper amount of sleep but
“Find a group of people
who challenge
and inspire you,
spend a lot of time
with them, and it will
change your life.”
– Amy Poehler
"None of us, including
me, ever do great
things. But we can all
do small things, with
great love, and together
we can do
something wonderful."
– Mother Teresa
The term “collaboration”
has been bandied about
in recent years. We
know and have enough
evidence to show that
being a collaborative leader is a tremendous
asset in balance. Women, who can
retain this core ability while acting decisively
to make things happen, have the skills
and demeanor to thrive in the future. Are
you one of them? Do you have the skills
and demeanor to thrive as a collaborative
leader?
Numerous research studies show women
are natural collaborators. We see it all the
time: people helping each other to achieve
what they seek to enrich their lives and of
those around them.
Page 124 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
or value as collaborative. Collaboration
means working together to create something.
The operative words are “create
something together.”
A number of years ago, Flynn Heath Holt
Leadership (FHHL) hosted a seminar for 150
businesswomen. Many of the attendees already
held senior leadership positions in
large companies, while others had been
come to terms with their ambition. These
women cited their indecisive perspective primarily
on their strong preference to collaborate
and cooperate rather than brazenly be
in charge.
Subscription link etmmedia.net
Do Not Wait for
Leaders;
do it alone,
person to person”
-Mother Teresa
The research from the seminar noted that
exceptional collaborative women, have a
talent for establishing buy-in.
Collaborative leadership is the wave of the
future. However, the problem is there can
be an overemphasis on consensus, which
can be viewed as weak, thus creating scenarios
when collaboration has been ineffective.
Examples include asking for permission,
appearing indecisive and failing to assert
a strong point of view.
Page 125 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
According to an article
written by Laura Henderson
and Sharon Hadary,
founder and former executive
director of the Center
for Women's Business
Research, “How Women
Lead: It’s All About Creating
A Culture Of Collaboration,”
women have a terrific
advantage for team
building because women’s
leadership styles are collaborative,
inclusive, and
consultative. They further
explain that women gain
commitment by enrolling
team members in achieving
a common vision, actively
soliciting and listening
to employees’ ideas,
and creating a culture focused
on ethics, quality
and concern for the individual.
“Women leaders recognize that people
want to be intellectually stimulated and energized
by their environment, to know they
are making a valuable contribution, and to
be recognized for their performance, so
they operate with collaboration, not command.
The leader’s job is to get everyone enrolled
in their vision so that it becomes a
shared driving force. Every team member
has to be committed to the overall organizational
goals rather than to departmental
or individual group goals.”
The leader’s
job is to get
everyone
enrolled in
their vision so
that it becomes
a shared
driving force.
Judy Robinson says, “Outsiders have the
perception that since there is a clear chain
of command in the Army, you can just give
orders and people will obey you. Command
has given way to collaboration in
every modern organization.”
Judy Robinson goes on to say, “that while
you may get action by giving orders, you
are getting obedience, not a sense of
achieving goals that make a difference. If
that’s how you try to lead, you don’t get anybody
anywhere. You need to explain to
your team why the goal is important. You
have to make it a team effort and value
what everyone does.”
“Having shared vision and goals really
helps create a culture of success,” says
Page 126 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Maria Coyne, Executive Vice President,
Consumer and Small Business Segment
Head, KeyBank, member Executive Council,
KeyCorp. “Part of a culture of success is
that you all want to achieve the mission,
and working together, you have fun in the
process. It doesn’t imply that you are just
working insane hours — although that happens
sometimes — but that you are balanced
and having fun and focusing on the
right things. Success creates success.”
“Making the work meaningful to them is one
of the most important ways to engage people
in their work. Take the time to ensure
that your team members understand the importance
of the work they are doing, how it
will be used, and how it will contribute to the
success of the company and the client. .”
the team’s progress
and success
and to recognize
individual
performance.
Teams that believe their work will make a
difference are more enthusiastic about
their work and work harder to achieve the
goal.
Making sure employees know they are appreciated
is a necessary and rewarding
business strategy. Recognize and reward
success. When your team has done a
good job, let them know. Take the time to
celebrate the team’s progress and success
and to recognize individual performance.”
Anne Stevens, Chairman, CEO, and Principal
at SA IT Services, characterizes her
leadership style as “push, push, hug.” She
says you must set goals that stretch people
and be explicit about your
expectations. However, “you can’t push
without a hug,” says Anne. There has to be
a balance. If you do either one without the
other, you will be ineffective. “It’s setting
objectives, and then at the end of the day,
recognizing the humanity in all of us.”
“In addition to believing that the organizational
vision is worth pursuing, employees
must perceive that in achieving the organization’s
goals, they also will be successful
in achieving their own personal and professional
goals. Take the time to understand
what success means to your team members
and how you can help them achieve
it.
The most successful
leaders help people recognize
their individual
strengths. Give them opportunities
to use those
strengths and build new
ones. Employees want to
feel they are making progress,
doing work that is
meaningful both to them
and to the organization.
Reinforce employees’
confidence in their skills
by putting them in situations
where they can perform
successfully and be
recognized.”
Gina O’Reilly, COO at
Nitro, in her article,
“United We Stand: Why
Women And Men Need
To Collaborate For Success,”
for Fast Company
shares, “we need to stop
taking sides in the gender
debate if we want to
work together equally.”
She goes on to say,
“Rather than engage in divisive tactics,
isolate ourselves at female-only events,
or openly complain about an issue that
needs to be addressed, we can all practice
what I call complementary collaboration:
simply recognizing, respecting, and
embracing the fact that men and women
bring different but often hugely complementary
skills to the table that, if nurtured
and developed, can be a very powerful
and highly successful combination for
any business.
It’s worth emphasizing this isn’t just a
“feel good” thing. Businesses should
Page 128 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
It’s important for women to ha
examine the issue pragmatically to fully recognize
the significant impact women can
have on a company’s bottom line.
Not only do women bring unique talents and
complementary skills to the boardroom (and
every other position for that matter), we hold
tremendous purchasing power. Today, women
make or influence a staggering 85% of all
consumer purchases across all categories.
Considering the influence and importance
women have in the purchasing process, their
perspective should be more than just nice to
have for companies that want to tap into a
market’s full potential. Business leaders
Subscription link etmmedia.net
ve each other’s backs
who recognize the power of understanding
their entire customer base and work diligently
to listen and make women’s voices
heard, come out on top.
So, what can we all do to help correct the
gender imbalance for current and future
generations? Here are a few simple tips to
help drive complementary collaboration:
1. Be Authentic
Women and men often feel they have to
act a certain way in the workplace in order
to be successful. This is particularly common
in female leadership roles where
people wrongly assume
you need a tough-as-nails
attitude to succeed, especially
in male-dominated
environments. However, a
lack of sincerity can be felt
a mile away and only perpetuates
the problem, so
it’s best to choose the authentic
route and just be
yourself. You’ll be surprised
how much more receptive
others are as a result.
2. Embrace and Play To
Your Strengths
According to Google,
women-led tech companies
achieve 35% higher
return on investment, and
when backed by venture
capital, deliver 12% more
revenue than their male
counterparts. Most women,
irrespective of their position,
bring a high level of
perceptiveness and emotional
IQ that’s critical for
leading teams and growing a business. So,
rather than worrying about the skills they
lack, women should recognize their talents
and double down on them, while men can
help ensure more women are part of the mix
from the onset for optimal business success.
3. Support One Another
It’s important for women to have each other’s
backs and foster a supportive, positive work
environment. Try to make an effort to connect
with other women in your company and industry
by attending networking and skill
Page 129 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
development events or
by organizing casual
meet-ups. Include men
in some of these activities
as well.
4. Introduce and
Lead Change
Merely complaining
about something you
could absolutely play a
hand in changing, or at
least improving, isn’t
helpful. Instead, take
the bull by the horns
and pave the way for
change. Women are
natural born leaders,
and the “matriarch
mentality” can be a
strong positive force
within any business.
The key is to have both
men and women align
behind this mindset
and drive change collectively.
In this vein,
let’s move past all the
talk about whether
Sheryl Sandberg, an
American technology
executive, activist, and
author who serves as
the chief operating officer (COO) of Facebook
and founder of Leanin.org (also known as the
Lean In Foundation), is in touch with the realities
of average women and instead celebrate
her efforts to raise awareness for the issues
we face. Collectively, we can make a difference.
We can do so much more to lead by example
and help foster complementary collaboration
and a greater balance between men and
women in the workplace. As women, we have
As women,
Men share the same responsibility.
To those men who have
worked with great women and
recognized firsthand what we
bring to the table, spread the
word!”
While these steps can help
women battle the discrimination
they encounter in the workplace,
fixing this problem relies
on all men and women. We all
want to believe in a world
where hard work pays off. However,
as long as women fail to
receive full credit for their contributions,
they’ll remain stuck
on the sidelines while men continue to
reap the benefits of collaborative success.
The Intuitive Leader -
Smart
Whole
Leadership
Page 134 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
At an event last night two like-minded retired senior Navy Officers - one
in his late 70's and another in his 50's could not stop speaking when
they found out about my upcoming leadership book, The Enchanted
Boardroom: Evolve Into An Unstoppable
Intuitive Leader, (Sept. 13th). It was as if a door was unlocked
and they could speak freely without being judged.
You see, in the book, I dispel the mystery of merging
the practical, tactical and logical with the intuitive, emotional,
spiritual and physical sides of ourselves to provide
whole leadership. It's about listening to those
images, those disembodied words one hears, and
those goosebumps and innate knowing and recognizing
that they are powerful messages. Instead
of running away you run towards them, incorporate
and work with the messages that come
because they give you needed insights to
complement the facts. Both sides are
critical to solid decision making.
Leaders throughout history refer to
working with intuition to lead
wholly and completely.
Yes, it's time to get this message
out and liberate those
amazing leaders who already
use these tools,
and are too scared to admit
it, because of the
fear of being judged
and labeled "not all
there. " In fact, they
are the ones who
are all there ....
so exciting!
A MESSAGE FROM:
Founder/CEO of The Women of Global Change
Female Executives joining together to lead the new economy. The Year of the Woman is
2016 and female executives are on the rise in America and beyond. Many organizations
and publications are ushering in the new wave. It is not too long ago that women received
the right to vote, coming so far, and still there is a long way to go for equal rights. Such
organizations and top companies that are known for having higher percentages of women
employed includes Bright Horizons, Nordstrom, Mayo Clinic, and Starbucks. Many other
organizations offering women in training in business have appeared on the horizon as
well, such as The Women of Global Change Summit and WGC Gateway Program, STEM,
LeTIP, NAFE (National Association of Female Executives) and also publications of additional
support can be found in E Magazine (Female-Executive), Ms. Magazine, Avant
Garde, and Entrepreneur Magazine.
With the majority of the workforce currently being women, and with women being 80% of
the consumers in the US, this gives incredible power for standing up and stepping in for
the year of the women: 2016. Ladies, it is time for us to lead united... YOU are the change
the world is waiting for.
An intimate, powerful, and
inspiring memoir by the
former First Lady of the
United States
In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment,
Michelle Obama has
emerged as one of the most iconic
and compelling women of our era.
As First Lady of the United States of
America—the first African American
to serve in that role—she helped
create the most welcoming and inclusive
White House in history, while
also establishing herself as a powerful
advocate for women and girls in
the U.S. and around the world, dramatically
changing the ways that
families pursue healthier and more
active lives, and standing with her
husband as he led America through
some of its most harrowing moments.
Along the way, she showed
us a few dance moves, crushed
Carpool Karaoke, and raised two
down-to-earth daughters under an
unforgiving media glare.
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection
and mesmerizing storytelling,
Michelle Obama invites readers
into her world, chronicling the experiences
that have shaped her—from
her childhood on the South Side of
Chicago to her years as an executive
balancing the demands of
motherhood and work, to her time
spent at the world’s most famous
address. With unerring honesty and
lively wit, she describes her triumphs
and her disappointments,
both public and private, telling her
full story as she has lived it—in her
own words and on her own terms.
Warm, wise, and revelatory,
Becoming is the deeply personal
reckoning of a woman of soul
and substance who has steadily defied
expectations—and whose story
inspires us to do the same.
Angel Toussant
I first met Angel through my Riverside nafe
director Joan E. Wakeland and was very
impressed as to what a dynamic women
she is. She also recently joined our Riverside
nafe network. I also had the opportunity
to hear her speak at several locations
and she is amazing. I asked her to speak
for some upcoming nafe meetings, which
are in Menifee, Murrieta and Temecula and
I am looking forward to those presentations.
Angel Toussant was born and raised in Anchorage,
Alaska and at age 37 moved from
Anchorage to Northern California. She remained
in Northern California until April,
2016 at which time she found her new
home in Murrieta,California.
She said “my proudest life accomplishment
is raising two phenomenal daughters.
I love to say I can die a happy person if I
accomplish nothing else in life because of
the relationship I have with my girls. I am
confident my relationship with my daughters
is well above average and I am confident
they feel the same way, despite the
many parenting mistakes I made along the
way”.
Angel believes we should never stop educating
ourselves. For her first leg of education at
the beginning of college she chose psychology
once she had satisfied that education she
pursued business and law. Currently she is in
pursuit of a marketing education when that
education is satisfied she is sure she will find
a new education interest to pursue.
Her career choices are as varied as
her education choices She has held positions
from teachers aid to police officer and
many careers in between. Currently, she is
providing monitoring services for parents who
are required by the courts to have supervised
visits. She consider myself a serial entrepreneur,
because she continually invests in endeavors
that provide her the opportunity
for her to grow a healthy income while doing
what she loves to do, which is to always find
new ways to help others around her, be it
family, friend, or stranger.
She has written and published two journal
books. The first was for recovering addicts
(out of print) and the second one is for
goal‐setting. She is currently writing a personal
growth book which she plans to publish
by year end. She owns an online store
(LifesPowerStore.Com) thttp://
lifespowerstore.com/ hat sells, educational/
personal growth books,
and other educational, inspirational, motivational
tools and products.
Her hobbies, like her education and careers
are varied. She enjoys golf, horseback riding,
photography (nature and wildlife), snow
skiing, boating, jet skiing, jewelry making,
hiking, bike riding, and graphic design.
