Deep Blue drives for sailboats<br />
Independence – Atlantic crossing<br />
Moonwave is a high-performance racing catamaran<br />
with a striking design and all carbon fiber and epoxy<br />
construction. Every aspect of this top-flight Gunboat<br />
60 was chosen for its light weight and durability.<br />
Installing Deep Blue Hybrid’s electric propulsion<br />
and energy management system made the yacht<br />
lighter and more environmentally friendly, while<br />
increasing its independence.<br />
Moonwave’s narrow, efficient hulls are easily<br />
propelled by two Deep Blue 25 kW saildrives with<br />
folding propellers. While sailing in hydrogeneration<br />
mode, the propellers are activated and add energy<br />
to the battery for propulsion or to supply the vessel’s<br />
hotel loads, winches and hydraulic controls. Additionally,<br />
a state-of-the-art, 20-square-metre solar<br />
photovoltaic array by Gochermann Solar Technology<br />
delivers 4 kWp of solar power to both the high- and<br />
low-voltage onboard systems. Furthermore, under<br />
high sailing speed, the Deep Blue system is able to<br />
win back up to 7 kW power in hydrogeneration.<br />
This abundance of power from multiple, redundant<br />
sources proved an important advantage on Moonwave’s<br />
first transatlantic crossing since the refit.<br />
The clean, silently generated electricity is stored<br />
in a single Deep Blue high-capacity battery (i3-<br />
type) which delivers plenty of power for the large<br />
on-board consumers, e.g. watermaker, washing machine<br />
and electric cooking. The automotive-grade<br />
lithium battery has a 9-year capacity warranty and<br />
offers industry-leading energy density, reducing<br />
weight and increasing performance even further.<br />
