What is 21st century learning? How different is a 21st century<br />

learner from all the learners before?<br />

‘21st century learning’ is a modern buzzword is that is commonly misunderstood. As it is usually<br />

defined, 21st century learning involves the use of technology to facilitate learning and application<br />

of knowledge. The truth is, technology is merely the vehicle used by students and teachers to make<br />

it easier to learn and teach. 21st century learning benefits from the use of technology, but does not<br />

necessarily rely on it.<br />

21st century learning is a re-emphasis on the importance of re-engaging students on their own<br />

terms in the noble pursuit of knowledge. In other words, it is about allowing a student to participate<br />

in self-learning at their own pace and in a conducive environment. Technology provides the<br />

means and the tools to make this happen.<br />

The exciting thing is that we can already see this happening in the Frog Classroom at<br />

SMK Puchong. The enthusiasm shown by the students and their teachers show how<br />

one’s learning environment coupled with the use of technology can change<br />

anyone’s outlook toward education.<br />

As Google’s Rahayu Ramli shares in this issue, the face of education has<br />

been changing and is going to change rapidly in the coming years. We<br />

can’t run away from the fact that we are in the 21st century and<br />

technology is invading every area of our lives, but how do we make<br />

the best of it? We at FrogAsia are confident that the success at SMK<br />

Puchong is just an example of what can happen when it’s done right.<br />

It can be replicated anywhere, even at your own school!<br />

Tomorrow is going to be bright and bold to match the tenacity and<br />

excitement of future generations. Teachers, parents and students,<br />
