Water restriction levels vary depending on
where you live. As a region we’re aiming to
reduce our water consumption to 200 litres/
pool to cool off on the hot days. A friendly
reminder when attending our region’s pools
you must wear appropriate swimwear. This
includes swimwear made from lycra or nylon
such as board shorts, swim shorts, bikinis
LETTERS
Real reason for Christmas
It had been said occasionally, “When
we see the word Xmas it means Jesus the
Christ has been taken out of the Christmas
Season.”
In actual fact that is not true. The original
New Testament was written in the
common Greek language. Wherever the
Hebrew for Messiah (the Anointed One)
is mentioned, it was written in Greek as
“Χριστός”. The first letter is not an X but
the Greek letter chi, a combination of two
English letters C and H, so that the full
word in English is Christos with the last
two letters removed.
The word Christmas is made up of two
words, Christ and mass. It is the mass,
also known as the Holy Communion, or
As the festive season approaches, what better
way to start the celebrations than an evening
viewing a diverse range of quality artworks and
sampling a selection of craft beers brewed by
Shannon Drenan. Our feature artist will be
watercolourist Bruce Griffiths.
The artists at MET Galleries hope you can join
them for this special evening and look forward to
the pleasure of your company.
the Lord’s Supper, that gives thanks (Eucharist)
for the miraculous birth of Jesus
the Messiah (Christ.)
Only at about 58 years after Jesus resurrection
and ascension, Bishop Clement of
Rome (88-97 AD) suggested May 20 as a
suitable Feast Day to celebrate the birth of
Jesus of Nazareth.
December 25 was chosen in the 400s
AD/CE to oppose the pagan festival the
Feast of the Sun, converting it to the Feast
of the Birth of the Son of Righteousness.
It is celebrated on that day similar to celebrating
the Queen’s Birthday, which is not
in October, but April 21.
There is both external and Biblical evidence
to support that Jesus really lived
EDITOR’S DESK
By MILES NOLLER
Confidence in an exciting region
As 2018 draws to a close, it is time to
reflect on the year just gone.
For some time now, this area has been
enjoying a period of significant development.
Major projects like the soon to be
completed second range crossing, the
planned inland rail, and the establishment
of the Wellcamp Airport and Business
Park all give us good reason for
confidence in the region’s future as we
head into the new year.
It is a nice feeling belonging to a community
experiencing progress instead
of decline and if we could just manage
some substantial rainfall to ease the dry
conditions, we would be looking at a
bright start to the new year.
On behalf of the Herald team, I would
like to thank everyone who helps us produce
this popular local product.
From our highly capable staff, those
who advertise with us, the many people
who deliver the paper throughout
the vast area that we cover, the correspondents
who submit club notes, right
through to the readers who look forward
HIGH COUNTRY HERALD - DECEMBER 11, 2018 - 3

CROWS NEST PROJECT
Dingo Mountain parklands project gains momentum
A parkland project
adjacent to Crows Nest
seems to be gaining the
praise of all who learn
about it.
What’s likely to be
named the Dingo Mountain
Parklands project,
impresses people as
having the potential for
bushland education,
nature conservation, and
tourism and recreation.
A meeting in Crows
Nest last week sought to
set out plans, and seek
opinions on how best
the bushland should
be developed, without
damaging its natural and
environmental values.
The project started
in March with the
announce-ment that
Crows Nest Community
Solutions, a division of
PCCN, had acquired
a large area of land on
the eastern outskirts
of Crows Nest, for the
benefit of the community.
The land includes
Dingo Mountain,
which has been almost
untouched by humans,
before and after white
settlement.
It borders Hartman
Park on the north east
edge of Crows Nest and
is separated from the
town by Bald Hills Creek
and Crows Nest Creek.
The University of
Southern Queensland has
been using the area for
many years for the study
of the environment and
flora and fauna.
Last week’s meeting
was attended by more
than 25 people.
Michael King told the
meeting that there were
about 120ha of potential
parklands in the area.
“It’s an untapped
resource and so close to
Crows Nest town,” Mr
King said.
Mr King previously
owned some of the land
acquired by Crows Nest
Community Solutions.
Nearby is the Bungaree
National park.
Crows Nest
Community Solutions
had also acquired what
was known as the “police
paddock” which extends
from Three Mile Road
and connects to the Dingo
Mountain land.
Howard Littleton, who
chaired the meeting,
described the potential
of the parkland as
“astronomical.”
He said it was hoped
the community would
become involved in
decisions to be made in
the coming year on how
the land should be used.
A friends of the
parkland group was being
formed so people can
have an input.
Work was already
under-way to construct
a shade area and
compostable toilet for
walking groups.
This was to be built
near an old piggery
where concrete structures
still existed.
• Ingrown Toenail treatment
Mr Littleton said the
name “Dingo Mountain
Parklands” would be
recommended to the
board of Crows Nest
Community Solutions,
although it appeared
some people were still
thinking through other
naming options.
Kerry Lovell said
that in the 1840s it was
documented that there
was a tribe of Aboriginal
people who used this land
as a trail through to the
Bunya Mountains.
They called this track
Dumba-Kunga-Mi which
means mountain range,
beaten track or path.
It was suggested one
of the trails be named
Dumba-Kinga-Mi.
Kerry detailed that
the Aboriginal peoples
found this land popular,
as it was a good source
of food.
The meeting also
discussed the need for
an asset register of what
plants, animals and
historical items are on the
site, before work started.
Howard Littleton
opened the meeting at
4.40pm and welcomed
attendees.
Apologies were
received from Ged
Brennan, Jeff Close,
Dennis Nissen, Michael
Condren TRC, Deb
Frecklington, Julie
Douglas, Cr Joe Ramia,
George Fox, Paul McRae
and Jim Cavaye.
Howard gave a brief
on the Dingo Mountain
project and detailed
that this meeting is a
reference point with all
final decisions being
made by Crows Nest
Community Solutions.
Steve Plant gave
futher background to the
project including what
has happened so far and
where to from here.
Steve detailed that
there is already plenty of
use in the parklands by
user groups such as USQ.
Michael King
presented on the history
of the land, which
includes 120 hectares of
space taking in Hartmans
Park, Dingo Mountain,
Bungaree National Park
and the Department land
It was decided that a
recommendation was
to be made to the board
one of the trails to be
named Dumba-Kinga-
the next part of the
process was to look at
the installation of toilets,
• Local nursery to
Salutory lesson
The best part about grocery
shopping at Highfields is that
we have two supermarkets
and maybe a third in the near
future.
Both have pleasent and
courteous staff and friendly
conversation at the check out.
Then one day, but not
for the first time I admit,
you meet a person on the
checkout who hardly speaks
to your wife and completely
ignores the other half.
So then you think we have
a choice. There is another
supermarket just a couple of
ks away.
My advice to this person
would be stay out the back
and manage.
All you are doing is driving
people away. - Bill Till,
After breaking the $10 billion
mark for the first time last year, the
Toowoomba Region’s economy has
continued to improve, recording
a $10.81 billion gross regional
product as of June 30, 2018.
The jump by almost half a billion
dollars. $465 million, over the
past 12 months was welcomed by
Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul
Antonio.
“The latest figures are extremely
encouraging and demonstrate how
the Toowoomba Region continues to
raise a high bar, not just throughout
Queensland, but also nationally,” he
said.
“The latest yearly figures equate
to regional economic growth of 4.5
per cent.
"This far exceeds national and
state economic growth of 2.2 per
cent and 2.4 per cent growth across
regional Queensland.
this is consistent growth we are
in 2019.
Mr Watts said the Toowoomba
North Small Business Advisory
“The Toowoomba North
said.
“Our local economy is
I want to make life easier for
small business owners and see
small businesses grow.
“Feedback from members of
the committee will be presented
Playground ready for new adventures
An exciting new addition to
the Queens Park Margaret Street
playground will be ready for
climbing and sliding in mid-
December 2018.
Toowoomba Regional Council’s
Parks and Recreation Services
portfolio leader Cr Joe Ramia said
the seven-metre-high Pentaboo will
add an extra sense of adventure to
the popular playground.
“The Pentaboo, a play on words
combining penta for five points
of contact with the ground and
peekaboo, is intended for use by
children 12 years and older,” Cr
Ramia said.
“The playground will provide
hours of fun for children to safely
climb and slide to their hearts’
content.
“While the additional new
playground area will be opened
in mid-December, maintenance
of surrounding turfed areas will
continue throughout December
and the community is asked not to
enter the turfed areas enclosed by
bunting.”
Cr Ramia said lighting of critical
pathways between the Botanic
Gardens, the Lindsay Street car park
and the central amenities area will
be completed in December this year.
The council will start works to
renew the Lindsay Street all-abilities
playground to meet regional park
delivery standards after February
2019 to ensure the school holidays
and park events are not affected.
Landscaping works, including
EVERYDAY SCIENCE with JAMES McKAY
Carbon dioxide and global warming
Carbon dioxide CO 2
which
occurs in our atmosphere is a trace
gas. Our atmosphere contains a
concentration of 0.04 per cent
carbon dioxide (410 ppm).
Before we started burning
fossil fuels during the industrial
revolution the concentration of
atmospheric carbon dioxide was
280 ppm.
Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse
gas because it absorbs radiation
from the sun.
In man-made greenhouses the
temperature inside the greenhouse
is warmer than the outside
temperature due to heat from
the sun entering the greenhouse,
and being contained within the
greenhouse by the glass, or plastic
covering.
The earth’s atmosphere acts in a
similar way.
The greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere (carbon dioxide,
www.getawaytours.com.au
4696 1857
methane, nitrous oxide, water
vapour, ozone) prevent all the heat
from the sun being lost back into
space.
Scientists have discovered
(using ice cores, trees growth
rings, and ocean sediment) that,
before the industrial revolution
of the 1700s the earth’s climate
changed due to natural influences
such as solar activity and volcanic
eruptions.
But the current warming
cannot be explained by these
natural factors, and since 1995
the consensus in the scientific
community is that the current
warming is being caused almost
entirely by the burning of fossil
fuels.
And, most importantly, the
evidence from the peer reviewed
literature supports this consensus.
Carbon dioxide changes
to carbonic acid in water, so
increasing atmospheric CO2
concentrations also makes the
oceans more acidic which puts
pressure on aquatic ecosystems
such as the Great Barrier Reef.
The lifetime of CO 2
in the
atmosphere is 100s to 1000s of
years.
A large portion is absorbed
by the ocean in the first 200 year
period, while the remainder takes
thousands of years to be removed
from the atmosphere through
processes such as chemical
weathering and rock formation.
The IPCC (Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change) has
published a comprehensive summary
of the latest scientific findings
on the lifetime of the various gases
in the atmosphere.
Mary Reid turned Highfields into a training
centre for cake decorating
Mary Reid developed
the local area into a place
to learn and improve
skills in cake decorating
and sugar craft, and
women from a wide
area would fill a week’s
worth of sessions.
Mary conducted many
training classes herself,
but the visits from
overseas experts, many
from England, attracted
wide interest.
Many of Mary’s
students achieved
renown in the craft, and
many used local shows,
the Toowoomba Royal
and Brisbane Ekka to
display their work.
Mayor Paul Antonio,
who attended last
week’s Christmas Cake
workshop, said Mary
made great contributions
to the community and
showed great passion for
her work.
Cr Antonio said Mary
also showed passion
for the Highfields
community and wanted
to see the area develop
in a suitable way.
He said the community
needed people with such
passion and ideas, and
commended her for the
pleasure she gave to
the many women who
trained with her.
Mary’s stellar baking
industry career included:
a 10-year feature writer
contract for a wedding
magazine, teaching,
international cake
tours, establishing new
competition categories
at the EKKA and
local shows, and avid
community and charity
advocate.
In September 2009
after relocating from
Brisbane, Merivale
Cakes opened for
business in Highfields.
Since then they completed
900 plus cakes
for clients, conducted
274 classes that were
attended by 707 students,
and they have 20 exstudents
open their own
businesses in Southern
Queensland and across
three states.
Merivale’s five international
cake tours
were legendary but
all providing some
inspiring life-changing
opportunities for local
decorators.
These tours were
attended by 38
travellers, with students
winning 21 awards, and
travelling 104 days over
an estimated 200,000km.
Another very popular
initiative for the business
has been the 10 worldrenowned
international
trainers Merivale
brought in to teach local
decorating enthusiasts.
These teachers
taught a total of 287
students from beginner
to advanced level skills,
over 27 training days.
Merivale’s record:
Kingsthorpe Central opens for business
New business people at Kingsthorpe Central Shopping Centre: Lynne Coleman, from Gowrie Hotel Motor Inn which has opened a Bottlemart, Toni Burgess, Kingsthorpe Medical Centre, providing medical,
pathology and allied health services, Amy Rae, Kingsthorpe Dental which opens early next year, Jason Bonney whose family has developed the centre, and Tony Wilkes, owner of the IGA full line supermarket.
Full range IGA
supermarket
in new complex
Kingsthorpe Central is now open to
shoppers, with an IGA supermarket, a
Bottlemart, and Kingsthorpe Medical
the first to open their doors.
In the New Year they will be joined
by Kingsthorpe Dental and a chemist,
and a bakery/coffee shop is likely to
complete the first stage.
This is the first of four stages of the
development of Kingsthorpe Central
with expansions occurring for some
years.
The Bonney family from Brisbane
specialises in establishing shopping
centres in smaller locations.
It is completing a centre at Tara, and
has built at Warwick, Charleville and
Chinchilla, along with others at Kilcoy,
Woodford, Gin Gin, Agnes Water,
Crestmead, and Mt Cotton.
The owner of the IGA store,
Tony Wilkes, is experienced at
operating supermarkets, and owns 14
supermarkets including IGA and others.
He said the Kingsthorpe shop would
have a full line of products, and it will
stock products the big supermarkets do
not.
“We aim to stock what local people
want,” Mr Wilkes said.
It will compete on quality and price,
and Mr Wilkes was confident about the
produce section, and the quality, price
and range of fruit and vegetables.
The IGA supermarket has opened
with a staff of 20.
The Bottlemart is owned by Gowrie
Hotel Motor Inn on the south side of the
railway line at Kingsthorpe, and plans to
have fortnightly specials.
enjoyable and successful Christmas meet and greet barbecue on Saturday,
December 1.
Spokesperson Eileen Nothdurft said more than 80 attended including
21 children and young teens.
She also thanked everybody who supplied goodies and helped out
Western half of second range crossing
opens to traffic
A section of the Toowoomba second range crossing,
from Mort Street to Athol, is open to traffic.
Vehicles up to and including B-Double trucks
have access to the completed 24km section of the
Toowoomba second range crossing.
The open section is between Mort Street, Cranley,
and the Gore Highway, Athol.
The 24km section between Cranley and Athol
provides new connections for cars and light
commercial vehicles between Athol, the logistics
hub at Charlton, and the Toowoomba CBD, via Mort
Street.
It is also a designated B-double route, with access
Toowoomba Regional Council is expected in coming
weeks and will be a designated multi-combination
vehicle route with as-of-right access for B-Doubles
to the New England Highway. B-Doubles using this
route will be detoured via Jellicoe Street until the
upgrade is complete.
The newly opened 24km section of the TSRC is
toll-free.
Tolls for the TSRC will be finalised closer to the
opening of the road, expected around mid-2019.
There are five entry and exit points to the opened
section of the TSRC: Mort Street, Cranley, Boundary
Street, Gowrie Junction, Warrego Highway, Charlton,
Toowoomba Cecil Plains Road, Wellcamp, and Gore
Highway, Athol.
The remainder of the TSRC from the Warrego
Highway at Helidon Spa to the Mort Street
interchange is expected to be completed by around
mid-2019. This is when the full TSRC will open to
the public.
The remainder of the TSRC from the Warrego
Highway at Helidon Spa to the Mort Street
interchange is expected to be completed by around
Heritage grant powers up Crows Nest Men’s Shed
A funding grant from Heritage Bank Crows Nest
and the local community has given Crows Nest District
Men’s Shed the power to complete new projects
- literally.
The group received a grant of $8547 from Heritage
Bank and the local community, represented by Progressive
Community Crows Nest to complete a much
needed electrical upgrade.
Crows Nest District Men’s Shed president Peter
Long said the grant was a welcome boost for the club
which was started in April this year.
“We were able to secure a lease for an unused shed
at the showgrounds.
"However it was in dire need of an electrical upgrade
so we could actually install and use the machinery
required for our projects,” Mr Long said.
“We are very grateful for this grant from Heritage
Crows Nest and PCCN.
"Without it, our members wouldn’t have the opportunity
to undertake new projects or practice their
trade skills. Heritage really is a bank that gives back
to the community.”
Heritage Crows Nest Branch Manager Aimee Skaines
said, “We’re only able to give back to amazing
local community groups like Men’s Shed because of
the support from our customers.
“Under the Heritage community branch model,
PCCN’s share of profits is distributed back into the
community as grants to local organisations, charities
and special community events. This means the more
people who bank with us, the more we can return to
the community in the form of community grants.”
If your community group is from the Crows Nest
area and would like to apply for a community grant,
please get in touch with Heritage Crows Nest Community
Branch on 07 4698 2700.
Free activities
for children
at Regional
Libraries
These school holidays Toowoomba Regional Libraries
have planned a broad range of free activities
for children to enjoy.
The library activities, for children of all ages,
will be run throughout December and January.
Children looking for Christmas ideas can learn to
decorate gingerbread biscuits with lollies and icing,
make origami gift boxes, a book mark or sun catcher
or have fun making Christmas crafts.
The more adventurous can find and identify insects,
locate curious creatures, learn to play the
drums, construct their own sword and shield, create
their own Pokemon and hunt for Pokemon in the library,
join in the junior and senior Xbox challenge,
play Dungeons and Dragons, or even test their ingenuity
by designing a floatable robotic raft.
Children can even go online and join the summer
reading club.
It’s free to register and join.
If the force runs strong in the family, then they
will want to get along to the Toowoomba City Library
on Saturday, January 12, as it gets taken over
by an empire of Star Wars fans.
The Regional Libraries at Toowoomba, Highfields,
Oakey, Goombungee, Pittsworth , Millmerran,
Cecil Plains, Clifton, Crows Nest, Yarraman
and Quinalow all have activities planned throughout
the holidays.
Ultimate Christmas Gift
By DAWN BRIESE
The best gift of all was not under a
tree,
wrapped up nicely by human hands
But a babe that was sent from Heaven
above,
and wrapped only in swaddling bands.
It’s the ultimate gift, bought not with
money,
but blood and a cruel cross was the
tree
Where the Lord died, for you and for
me
And his love still pours out like a flood.
HIGH COUNTRY
FARMING
Oakey wins first battle for best beef
By MILES NOLLER
When 150 diners at
Toowoomba’s Spotted
Cow restaurant last
week tasted and judged
sirloin steaks from six
of the Darling Downs
premium branded beef
producers, they would
have acknowledged
every 70 gram piece was
of the highest quality.
“There was not a bad
steak among them,” one
said.
But a winner did
emerge, albeit by just a
point or two, and that
was Angus Reserve from
NH Foods, owners of
Oakey Beef Exports.
Six beef processors
submitted seven entries
for the Beef Battle.
The others were JBS
Beef City Platinum,
John Dee, Warwick,
which submitted John
Dee Platinum Black
grain fed F1 Wagyu, and
John Dee Gold Angus
grain fed, Mort and Co
Grandchester, Grassdale
feedlot and processed
at Oakey and John
Dee, Rangers Valley
Black Onyx, Tenterfield
but processed at John
Dee, and Stanbroke,
Grantham, Diamantina
Wagyu.
The highly successful
event was organised by
Food Leaders Australia,
a division of Toowoomba
and Surat Basin
Enterprise.
It sought to assess
the best beef from
the Darling Downs
area. Processors had
to be within 100km
of Toowoomba and
to promote these beef
brands.
Food Leaders Australia
General Manager
Bruce McConnel said his
organisation was proud
to help deliver the event.
“We wanted to bring
the region’s top beef
producers together to
highlight the outstanding
quality of beef we have
in the Darling Downs,”
Mr McConnel said.
“It will also help
develop stronger relationships
between suppliers
and the food and
hospitality industry,
both locally and across
the state.
“We’re pleased to have
The Star Entertainment
Group, via its Treasury
Brisbane property,
throw its weight behind
this event by sending
its top executive chef to
work with our local chefs
on the night.
“The event was
essentially a blind-tasting
competition where
the 150 diners tasted
each of the brands’
sirloin steaks and then
judged who had the
region’s best.”
There were 15 tables
each with 10 guests and
each table produced a
score.
The characteristics
they judged were:
flavour, intensity of
flavour, tenderness,
juiciness, and mouthfeel.
The sirloins were aged
for no more than 60
days.
Most were aged 45 to
50 days and had to have
a marbling score of less
than five.
Marbling score is one
to 12.
Each of the seven
courses was accompanied
by three side
dishes and two sauces.
By 2022 the Star
Entertainment Group
will have 90 restaurants.
It will add more than
16 when it completes its
Queens Wharf project
in Brisbane, and is
expanding Jupiter’s on
the Gold Coast, and the
Star in Sydney.
Star representatives in
July visited Toowoomba,
providing an opportunity
for producers of many
foods, including beef,
to speak about their
produce and its supply.
Star’s Treasury Brisbane
executive chef
Steven Jones said he had
looked forward to the
Beef Battle and to learn
more about the beef
industry.
“As a business, it’s
important that we find
the best and freshest
produce right across the
state to ensure we create
authentic Queensland
experiences for locals
and visitors to our
properties,” he said.
Executive chef Jones,
who was involved in last
week’s function, picked
the winning beef entry.
He tasted each before
serving, to ensure all beef
was cooked optimally.
By contrast, General
Manager of Oakey Beef
Exports, Pat Gleeson,
when accepting the
trophy, said he could
not pick his own entry,
but praised the event,
the quality of the beef
served, and the quality
of beef being produced
on the Darling Downs.
Oakey’s Angus
Reserve is the largest
verified Black Angus
Beef brand in Australia.
Their cattle are grain
finished at Whyalla
Feedlot at Texas, and are
fed on an exclusive mix
of wheat, oats and barley
for a minimum 150 days.
Their Black Angus
beef is exported to
more than 30 markets
worldwide and is
accredited by Australia’s
MSA eating quality
grading system.
Mr McConnel said
he has received good
reports about the first
time event, and some
have said, “Don’t change
a thing.”
But Mr McConnel
said it might have
to be expanded and
consideration was being
given to including some
other brands, including
grassfed beef.
"It’s important that we
find the best and freshest
produce to ensure
we create authentic
Queensland experiences
for locals and visitors
- Star’s Treasury Brisbane executive chef
Zischke brothers: No secret to milk quality awards
The Norco milk processing co-operative has just
presented Haden dairy farmers, Zischke Farming, with
their fourth consecutive Supreme Milk Quality Award.
The Zischke brothers, Dallas, Adrian, Glen and
Melvyn, joined Norco on 1st July, 2014, and each year
since have won both the Northern Region Award for
milk quality, and also the Supreme Milk Quality Award
covering the total Norco supply regions.
They said they are constantly asked about the secret
to their success.
They say there is no secret. “There is no secret
method,” is their reply.
What they do, they do properly, they do well, they
say
Ȧnd they did have some practice. Their previous
processor Dairy Farmers milk cooperative, presented
them with an award for 10 consecutive years of
exceptional milk quality.
The Zischke brothers say they practice consistent
and careful herd management.
“There is no one particular practice that results in the
low cell counts in their milk,” they said.
They ensure milking cups are always placed on dry
teats; they use a spray on the teats to prevent mastitis;
they have a treatment for all cows drying off to prevent
mastitis; monthly herd recording provides a strong
emphasis on cows with regular high cell counts; and
their daily cleaning practices in the milking shed are
followed closely and include the use of quality bore
water for the initial daily cleaning.
This is followed by a very hot tank water solution
for the main wash, alternating between an alkaline
detergent in the morning, and an acid detergent sanitiser
in the afternoon.
The Zischkes also believe that their farm lends itself
to better cow health.
They said the cows have access to quite an area of
hill country and natural pasture that is clean and well
drained. They are not confined to wet, boggy soil and
yards.
The Zischke’s successful dairy farming enterprise
also involves their feeding program which includes
growing all their own crops for grazing, and for fodder.
This year has been an exception, but normally they
Queensland broadacre agriculture’s
peak body, AgForce
Queensland Farmers, is furious
it has been ignored by the State
Government around the closure
of two iconic agricultural colleges.
AgForce General President
Georgie Somerset said she was
staggered that the broadacre sector
was not asked for input into
the termination of the Longreach
Pastoral College and Emerald
Agricultural College announced
today by the State Government.
“These two institutions have
historically provided a vital contribution
to the success of modern
broadacre agriculture,” Mrs
Somerset said.
“However, they have struggled
in the face of changing
demographics and a challenging
business environment. It is
shameful that our industry has
been roundly ignored by the
Government and by Prof Peter
Coaldrake on this issue, when
we have historically been so involved
in and connected to the
colleges.
"Minister Furner claims to
have consulted more than 70
organisations, so it is perplexing
that AgForce was not one of
them, especially given our memorandum
of understanding with
Queensland Agricultural Training
Colleges.
"Our industry needs innovative,
best-practice, accessible
education to ensure we can continue
to grow and deliver economic
and employment benefits
to Queensland.”
“Broadacre agriculture in
Queensland is worth $7.25 billion
at the farm gate, plus $2.5
billion in first stage processing.
"More than 330,000
Queenslanders are employed
across the whole food supply
chain, including critically important
jobs in our regional and
rural communities.
"Ensuring access to quality
would have adequate oats for grazing in winter, and
forage sorghum and lab lab in summer.
During September, October and November, Norco
paid its suppliers an extra 5cents/litre as part of a
program to help farmers through the drought, and this
has been of real benefit in coping with the extra costs.
The Zischke’s adjoining property is set aside for
producing oats and barley for hay in winter, and red
pannicum hay in summer.
This year they had enough rain in March to plant
oats, but because there was not more rain until October,
oats production was down to about 25 percent of
normal.
Despite this, Zischke Farming continues to supply
Norco with its best quality milk.
Ag college closures irk Agforce
education and skills development
provides important career
paths for young people in the
bush at a time we are trying to
encourage them to stay on the
land.”
Mrs Somerset said it was imperative
the State Government
closely involve broadacre agriculture
in planning to modernise
and reinvigorate vocational education,
training and skilling
in the state’s central west announced
in the media release.
“The media release issued by
Minister Furner is very short on
detail when it comes to what this
plan involves, and how they are
going to improve educational
opportunities available to young
people in the bush,” she said.
Mrs Somerset described the
closure of these iconic colleges
as the end of an era that many
people would see as proof that
the State Government has a tin
ear when it comes to listening to
rural Queenslanders.
MILES NOLLER REPORTING
To advertise phone 4615 4416 or email herald@highcountrynews.net.au
Zischke Farming from Haden has been supplying their milk to the Norco organisation for four years, and
in each of those years they have won Norco’s Supreme Milk Quality Award. Holding the certificates are
the four Zischke brothers, Adrian, Glen, Melvyn and Dallas.
Melvyn Zischke in 80
acres of Red Pannicum
that was planted on the
good October rains. But
following weeks of hot
weather, it will require
more rain soon. The
Zischkes grow Red
Pannicum for hay. It
has good protein and
is leafier than other
forages.
Zischke Farming
normally makes enough
hay each year for its
milking herd. But this
year they also bought
in some for insurance,
quality irrigated barley
hay from Gatton and
the South Burnett, and
quality wheaten hay
from South Australia.
With some of this hay
are Dallas (left) and
Glen Zischke. They said
the hay they brought in
was expensive at $500
per tonne, but they did
it to ensure there was
adequate feed for their
cows.
Your local
Reason why:
• Keep the town feel so
you don’t become a
nationwide box chain
store
• Locals give back to their
community, schools etc.
• A local business will
cater to local needs
• Friendly service because
the owners will
be in your community
Hi - my name is Mikki and I am
in need of a loving forever home.
I am a gentle lady with a quiet
personality.
I do love attention but taking
it nice and slow with me works
best.
That way I can get to know
you first before we are on cuddling
terms.
I would happily live as an indoor
feline family member, that
way I am nice and safe plus I
don’t come inside looking like I
came off second best with a leaf
blower.
I am more of a laze on the
couch and Netflix the afternoon
away kinda gal.
I have been desexed, microchipped,
vaccinated, wormed
and flea treated. Please come
and say hello to me today.
To feature your business here,
My name is Annie and I am looking for a forever
home filled with love and kindness...plus my forever
people.
I am a sweet lady with a happy personality. I LOVE
PEOPLE!! I try hard to control my excitement when
I first see you but I am so happy you are around it
sometimes gets the better of me. I am really clever
though so I am learning my manners very quickly here
at the shelter.
I would need to be allowed inside my new home to
be with my family. I love to be included and would really
enjoy being a part of the day to day routine.
I love toys and would benefit from having playtime
and lots of exercise.I still think I am a puppy and would
have so much fun running around having a big game.
I love playing with other dogs and having a pal to
hang out with during the day, so it would be good to
find a new home with another playful dog. My friends
here at the shelter ask that you bring them up to meet
me first though just to make sure we are a perfect fit.
I have been desexed, microchipped, vaccinated,
wormed and flea treated. Please come and say hello
to me today.
Oakey Beef Exports take out gold in
the inaugural
BEEF BATTLE
organised by Food Leaders Australia,
a division of Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise
Pat Gleeson, general manager of Oakey Beef Exports, and Michael Davidson, general
manager of Beef Producers Australia, a division of NH Foods which owns the Oakey business.
Oakey Beef Exports processes and packages
premium beef products for the world market
The realization of this goal is integral in the
Abattoir’s consistent and well-respected
relationship with suppliers, customers, employees
and its committed alliance to the
Australian environment.
Established in 1956, Oakey Beef Exports is
one of Australia’s largest beef processing
plants, employing more than 750 people from
Oakey, Toowoomba and the surrounding
districts. It offers employment, growth and
development for the region, and for the
industry.
NH Foods Australia purchased the Oakey
Beef Exports in 1986 and has since rebuilt
the facility into an award winning, vertically
integrated supply chain business. The
addition of new technologies is ongoing as it
strives for excellence.
Now, through a sophisticated process, the
Abattoir is able to comprehensively trace its
meat products from the animal’s property of
birth, through to the end user (from farm to
plate).
