KALAJA E ISHMIT
Kështjella me
kulla vrojtimi.
ISHMI CASTLE
The castle was built in the years 1572 - 1574, by the local
feudal, Mehmeti, upon the order of the Ottoman Gate.
After the work was completed, the castle was equipped
with balls and a soldier’s garrison was placed in it. The
castle with a square plan (100 x 40 m) has two gates, and
five observation towers.
From historical sources it is accurately recognized as the
purpose and timing of its construction. During the 16-th
century, Ishmi was included in the Ohrid Sanjak that was a
country full of peasant revolt and turmoil for the Ottoman
Empire. For this reason, first feudal Mehmet proposed the
High Gate to build a fortress in Ishem, which would guard
the vilayet from the insurgents, provided Sanjak was given
venture to collect the state’s fiscal obligations.
The castle was built on a hill in the east of the village of
Ishem. From her vision opens a broad horizon. From the
north and east are observed the fertile field of Ishmi and
the visibility is divided into the Krujë - Dajt mountain range,
while from the west it is observed from the river mouth,
Cape Rodon and part of the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The
walls are strengthened by five towers, which, with the
exception of a corner tower with circular plan and another
pentagonal plan, have rectangular shapes. The 1st tower
and the 2nd tower are preserved at the height of the walls,
while the tower of III, IV, V, are demolished, of which only
the side walls are preserved on the plain of the floor, while
the front walls are completely extinct .
