slice, to the best cannoli." Dave, Dan, and Mike Andelman did not start out as food connoisseurs. They grew up eating grilled cheese and pork chops in Lynnfield. Now, they go out to dinner and hear gasps from their father when one of them orders venison. Growing up, Mike was the athlete, Dan was the creative genius, and Dave would have been fine being an attorney. Fans of Phantom Gourmet don't know a lot about Mike, given he enjoys working behind the scenes and away from all the cameras. "Mike's not shy at all, he just doesn't really like being on television," Dave said. "He works on the business, sales, and sales development side. That's what he loves to do and he's brilliant at it." While the brothers may be in the spotlight now, they grew up under a spotlight thanks to their father, longtime sports broadcaster Eddie Andelman. "It doesn't even occur to you that's an odd situation," Dave said. "One thing that it did prepare me for, that maybe I do better than some small businesses and people in media, is I tune out the Internet hatred. I can remember being a little kid and having sportswriters write terrible things about my dad, people would even call in to say terrible things, and he always just laughed at it. We're cut from the same cloth in that way." Dave was 23 years old when Phantom Gourmet started in 1993, with the initial concept being restaurant reviews by an anonymous critic. The Internet was about to take off in popular culture, enabling everybody to become a critic. Dave had a feeling that concept was not going to work, and expected the show to become a parttime job. Two decades later, it's clear the TV gods had something bigger in mind. Dan joined the show after graduating from college in 1997, and Mike followed suit six years later. Mike convinced his brothers to go bigger, leading them to say goodbye to New England Cable News and hello to a big-time contract with WBZ in 2003. "People say it must be hard for us always working together, but it's really not because my brothers are hardworking, talented guys," he said. "You have friction but I think that you should have friction in an organization." Dave considers Dan the most valuable person in Boston television, even going as far as to call his little brother a natural performer, interviewer, and producer. "To me, he's the best in the market," said Dave. Between Dan and Mike, the future Andelman generation currently consists of two grandsons and five granddaughters, with Dave content being the fun uncle. The brothers aren't the only ones keeping Phantom Gourmet up and running, said Dave, giving credit to the crew that nobody sees. They are the ones spending countless hours and driving thousands of miles to create quality content.
