MEDALLION
This quilt mixes naïve applique and precise piecing of
diamonds, crossed ribbons and chevron borders to create
an open, airy quilt. The crossed ribbon border has precise
placement of colors for maximum effect. Inspiration
HAWKINS
de « Quilts and Quiltmakers Covering Connecticut ».
Dimensions du quilt/ Finished size:
126 x 162 cm (49” x 63”)
Inspired by a baby quilt made by Egbert Newberry in 1868 for
his granddaughter. Egbert Newberry learned to sew as a boy from
his mother; which stood him in good stead after he suffered spinal
injuries during the Civil War. His much-dreaded sewing lessons
meant he had the skills to “make quilts for money” to augment
the family income. The back of the quilt is a strippy quilt inspired
by the backing of the “Medallion Baby Quilt” made
by a Manning-Greene family member between 1840-1865.
Both the original quilts can be seen on pages 78 and 73 of
“Quilts and Quiltmakers Covering Connecticut”.
Louisa’s
EYELASHES
mouvement. Le quilt d’origine est une photo
common of patterns can be transformed, creating color
QUILT « ÉCORCES D’ORANGE » DE SELENA MUSGROVE
WARNER
SELENA MUSGROVE WARNER ORANGE PEEL QUILT
Inspired by this paper pieced quilt made in England in 1793, my version
has the addition of a diamond-frame border. Although this is a scrappy
quilt, the clever placement of the 4 color groups used in the construction
adds a sense of order to the scraps. Pink, blue, beige and brown prints
are used in strategic placement within each section of the quilt, creating
overall harmony and distribution of colors. (See how the pink and beige
orange peel pieces are placed in one direction and brown and blue orange
peel pieces are placed in the opposite direction). The original quilt can
be seen on page 69 of “The Quilters Kaleidoscope” by Dianne Finnegan.
Passiflora
QUILT
PASSIFLORA PANEL WITH PENTAGON BORDERS
A double row of paper pieced pentagon flowers surround
a beautiful antique linen panel. The sparkle of the pentagon
flowers serves to enhance the gentle colors in the center. To add
to the vintage feel of this quilt, the center panel was bordered with
a linen/cotton mix textured fabric and quilted from the back with
Guterman «“Sulky 12” thread, without batting. This created the
«hit and miss» quilting stitches I wanted on the front. Once quilted,
the pentagon flowers were sewn together in strips and
then appliquéd to the edge, enclosing the turning.
Inspired by the “glowing” chintz prints of an unfinished
quilt made in England in 1840, my version tries to
capture the airy openness of the whirligig shapes as they
dance across the crisp white background. I used white
Japara for the background to add «rustle» when the quilt
is handled. The original quilt can be seen on page 46
of “The Quilters Kaleidoscope” by Dianne Finnegan.
