It’s the most wonderful time of the year, so

Our review for December, took place at The 

Fritton Arms, in Norfolk, part of the 5000-acre 

Somerleyton Estate. Read all about it in the food

I can’t wait to snuggle up by my Christmas tree 

with a few classic movies and some mince pies. 

This year will be my first married Christmas so I 

have been searching for that all-important gift for

With 2019 just around the corner we fancied a 

refresh, so we have enlisted the help of our new 

Graphic Designer Katie Parsons, she will give the

with Max Helyer, the guitarist of indie rock 

band You Me at Six. He told me all about how 

they formed ten years ago and we discussed the

Bangladeshi 

Spiced Turkey Breast 

BY AWARD WINNING 

CHEF ABDUS SHAHID 

Prep Time: 

40 mins 

Cooking Time: 

3.5 hours 

Why not try something a little 

different this year? 

Method 

1. In a food processor, puree the yogurt 

with the onion, garlic, ginger, lemon juice, 

turmeric, cumin, coriander, cinnamon and 

cayenne. 

2. Place the turkey breasts on a large rimmed 

baking sheet. Pour the yogurt marinade over 

the turkey and rub it over both sides and 

under the skin. Cover and refrigerate for at 

least 6 hours and up to 24 hours. Remove 

the turkey from the refrigerator 1 hour before 

roasting. 

3. Preheat the oven to 475°F/176°C Transfer 

the turkey breasts (with any marinade that 

sticks to them) to a large roasting pan, skin 

side up. Season with salt and pepper and 

drizzle the butter over the skin. 

4. Roast for 20 minutes. Reduce the oven 

temperature to 375°F/176°C and roast for 

50 minutes longer, or until an instant-read 

thermometer inserted in the thickest part of 

the breast registers 165°F/176°C 

5. Transfer the turkey to a cutting board and 

let rest for 10 minutes. Carve and serve. 

Ingredients 

• 2 cups plain whole-milk yogurt 

• 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped 

• 3 large garlic cloves 

• 1 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled 

and thinly sliced 

• 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 

• 2 teaspoons ground turmeric 

• 1 teaspoon ground cumin 

• 1 teaspoon ground coriander 

• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 

• 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 

• 2 bone-in, skin -on turkey breast 

halves (about 3 pounds each) 

• Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 

• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Premier Artists’ Showcase Invites Members 

To Join For 8th Successful Year... 

SUFFOLK OPEN STUDIOS 

Suffolk Open Studios have launched 

their 2019 Call for Artists, inviting artists 

and galleries living and working across 

Suffolk to join next year’s programme. 

Earlier this year, over 100 artists opened 

their studios to the public and enjoyed 

the many advantages of taking part, 

including reaching new audiences and 

showing their work in the comfort of 

their own studio; receiving valuable 

feedback by interacting directly with 

potential clients; and the chance to 

meet and collaborate with fellow artists 

in their area. Artists and galleries also 

benefit from valuable publicity through 

their profile on the Suffolk Open 

Studios website and Facebook page, 

and inclusion in the printed directory, 

distributed free of charge to tourist 

centres, art venues and visitor attractions 

throughout the county. 

Members are also guaranteed a place 

in the annual Suffolk Open Studios Annual Showcase 

Exhibition at the Apex Centre in Bury-St-Edmunds, 

running 25 February - 1 April 2019. This year’s show 

proved extremely popular and drew favourable comments 

from across the art community. 

Run by volunteers, Suffolk Open Studios is open to all 

Suffolk artists and galleries regardless of the media in 

which they practise. Members open their studios free 

of charge to the public 11am-5pm over the first five 

weekends of June, choosing to open on as many or few 

weekends as they wish. Many join together to form their 

own local artists’ “trails”; anyone unable to include their 

own studio can still take part by renting space with other 

artists and forming their own artists’ “hub”. More details 

are on the Suffolk Open Studios website at 

www.suffolkopenstudios.org. 

Artists and galleries wishing to take part in next 

year’s programme can do so from 1 November, by 

completing the online membership form at 

www.suffolkopenstudios.org/membership. 

Early applications are encouraged, to guarantee

romance is in the air 

and a very special gift is 

coming you way... 

He pops the question. You 

say yes. Hooray! You’re 

engaged! Now what do you 

do? Here are my tops tips: 

1. CALL YOUR RELATIVES... 

Your first task - sharing the 

exciting news with the world. 

And how easy would it be to do 

so in 140 characters or fewer 

or with a quick status update? 

No matter how tempting, it’s 

an engagement no-no to not 

pick up the phone and call your 

family members and friends. All 

of them. No one likes to be the last to know! 

2. GET YOUR RING SIZED... 

Your stunning sparkler is perfect in every way, except for 

the wiggle room (or maybe it’s a little tight and turning 

your fingertip a not-so-Tiffany-blue). Get it resized 

ASAP—after all, you’ll be showing it to everyone and the 

last thing you want is to lose the thing an hour after you 

get it. 

3. GET YOUR RING INSURED... 

Nothing can replace the sentimental value of your ring, 

but if something happens to it, at least you can get 

your (or his) money back. If you have home owner’s or 

renter’s insurance, call to add the ring to your policy. 

4. SET A DATE—EVEN IF IT’S NOT THE DATE... 

After “congratulations” and “let me see your ring,” here’s 

the first thing people will ask: “When’s the wedding?” 

It’ll save you lots of headaches if the two of you come up 

with a vague-yet-specific answer, like “We’re aiming for 

early 2020” or “We like the idea of next autumn.” People 

appreciate feeling like they’re in the loop, and they’ll also 

put the event into their mental datebooks.

kind of keep-organized device to 

help you create a timeline for major 

wedding-related tasks. 

7. START A WEDDING SAVINGS 

ACCOUNT... 

Remember that even a simple, 

small wedding costs money (and 

sometimes a lot more money than 

you would ever imagine). 

A wedding savings account is an 

easy way to keep cash accumulating 

for the big day, so you don’t have 

to rely on plastic to bear the brunt 

later on. 

8. ASK YOUR PARENTS (AND HIS) 

FOR THEIR IDEAL GUEST LISTS... 

Before you start putting a number 

on how many guests you want, it’s

You Me At Six are back again 

with a brand new album... 

Few bands get to spring a surprise sixth album 

into their career. Even fewer do so in as dramatic a 

fashion as You Me At Six do on their simply titled 

new record, VI. They know what you probably think 

of them – “The emo pop-rockers from Surrey,” as 

guitarist Chris Miller puts it – and once upon a time 

you would have been right. But not for a long time, 

and certainly not on VI, a record that switches 

moods and styles with breathless confidence, from 

devastatingly defiant rock to joyously uplifting pop. 

It all but drips with melodies and moods. It’s the kind 

of record a band makes when they are in love with 

all the possibilities of music. VI is not what you might 

expect a You Me At Six album to sound like. 

You Me At Six needed something unbelievable to 

happen with VI, because by their own admission it 

didn’t happen with their last album, Night People, 

released in February 2017. As a band, they were too 

tied up with their own business affairs, they didn’t 

write the songs to do their talent justice, and they 

created an album they felt was too samey, too linear, 

always travelling in one direction. 

They have notched up a list of considerable 

achievements since forming in 2004 as teenagers in 

Weybridge, Surrey, including four UK Gold Records, 

four Top 10 albums in the UK including Number 

1album Cavalier Youth, three sold out arena shows, 

sold out UK headline arena tours, an unparalleled 

15 consecutive A-List singles on BBC Radio One, 

multiple sold-out US headline tours and a Number 

1 rock song in UK & Australia and Top 5 Rock Radio 

track in North America in ‘Room To Breathe’. 

You Me at Six are about to change the way you think

with guitarist, Max Heyler, about their new album

R: Hi Max, How are you? 

I’m good thanks, how are you doing 

today? 

R: Yeah, really good! Thanks for taking 

the time to speak to me. 

No worries, anytime, thanks for chatting. 

R: So, I will fire straight into the 

questions… 

Yeah! 

R: How did you first get into playing the 

guitar? 

When my sister and I were growing up, 

she started learned how to play the piano. 

The sound always intrigued me, it’s quite 

an enchanting thing to watch. 

I remember wanting to learn an 

instrument, but I didn’t know what. 

When I was in primary school, a 

musician came in one day and showed 

us a few instruments, I remember 

seeing the guitar; it was also around 

about the time I started to listen to rock 

music, so I knew that was the one 

for me. My parents didn’t want it to be a 

short-lived hobby; I had to wait for quite 

a while to get a guitar, which was about 

four years. 

R: Four years wow! 

Yeah, so it was quite a long time. I think 

the wait made me more hungry to learn 

how to play it. 

How did you form the band?

I used to play in a band with Josh before 

You Me at Six, which stopped. 

So after that Josh and I enjoyed hanging 

out with each other making music and we 

wanted to start another band. Josh knew 

Matt, so it was the three of us who started 

the band, then Chris joined, he only lived 

a door or two down away from Matt’s 

parents’ house. Then we all went to Music 

College, and that’s when we met Dan who 

is our drummer now. 

R: Where does the name ‘You Me at Six’ 

come from? 

We were booking gigs and didn’t have a 

name so it was a common term we used 

every Friday night for meeting up, “You 

Me at Six”? So we put that down as an 

option just so we had a band name and 

we never changed it. 

R: Well, I like it so I am glad you didn’t! 

Thank you! 

R: Before you were in the band you used 

to have your own clothing shop can tell 

us more about this? 

It wasn’t before the band, I started it with 

a friend outside of music, and he was 

actually our first merch guy. I am really 

into fashion; I like clothes; I am constantly 

sourcing designers and that was the 

whole process behind starting up clothing 

shop ourselves. 

R: What do you do in your downtime? 

Downtime can be anything for me, I like

writing music a lot, so it could be writing 

music on my guitar, laptop or trying to 

produce music. 

I try to find ways of being creative but 

also find inspiration from going out in 

London town or taking walks or going to 

art museums. I like to switch off; it really 

helps that creative process. 

R: I guess that’s important when your 

schedule must be so busy?

I think we always strive to become better 

and learn more. Being patient with 

yourself is important as is creating a set 

routine time to practice. 

R: Can you tell us more about the new 

album, your sixth album? I have had a 

little listen and I have to say I’ve really 

enjoyed it, there’s lots of energy. Did you 

enjoy creating it? 

Yeah, exactly, it’s good to compose your 

thoughts. 

R: What advice would you give to those 

learning the guitar? 

You need to be dedicated, you will not be 

the best musician straight away, I am still 

Yeah, we were just trying to push 

ourselves. I think when you challenge 

yourself it also challenges your fans about 

what they are listening to. For myself, I 

don’t listen to the same music all the time, 

that affects the way I write music and my 

outlook on things. We have tried to be 

more experimental with this album and

make our music more interesting. 

R: My favourite track on the album is 

“Back Again”, it came on the radio when 

I was in the car and I didn’t realise it was 

you guys, it was different to some of your 

other songs. Do you have a favourite 

track on the album? 

That song sums up that day, I think Josh’s 

voice is always the thing that will glue 

You Me at Six together as it’s quite an 

identifiable voice. 

We can be more creative because of that. 

It was meant to be like a Friday night 

feeling song. 

It’s hard, as it’s a volume of work. As 

a musician, you don’t really want to 

choose a favourite, as they are all equally 

important, like you were saying “Back 

Again” was quite a different way of 

writing music. 

I wrote that with a guy called Joel Pott 

who used to play in Athlete; it was a 

different experience to write a song with 

a songwriter; it captured a certain energy 

and emotion on the day. 

I wanted something you could dance to, I 

think music is meant to make you happy 

and sad and I was in a great place and I 

think it reflects it in the song. 

R: It comes through; I have to confess I 

had a little bob up and down to it in the 

car… I am a right geek! 

It still makes me do that as well! The most 

humbling thing about that song is that it 

differs from what we’ve done, if it makes

you bob your head or dance, that’s the 

most important thing. 

We are always trying to push and strive to 

become better. 

that album from start to finish, along with 

other songs mixed in. It reminds people of 

where they were at that time in their life. 

Almost nostalgic? 

Your UK tour stops by us in Norwich on 

8 th December, can you tell us more about 

that? 

Well, yeah I can, that show in Norwich will 

celebrate the 10-year anniversary of our 

album ‘Take Off Your Colours”. 

Yeah, really nostalgic, I try to find a way of 

not saying nostalgic! 

There is nothing wrong with that – that 

could be for good or bad times, but that’s 

music at the end of the day and I get that 

from other artists myself. 

The reason we are doing it is that we 

wanted to give something back to the 

fans, for us, we didn’t know if we should 

do it or not, but we wouldn’t be where we 

are today without our fans. 

So this is to say thank you. We will play

ten years and there must have been a few 

but is there one particular one? 

We’ve been all over the world and 

headlined at festivals, but for me, it was to

have a number one album on our fourth 

record ‘Cavalier Youth’ because when you 

make music, you don’t expect it to be a 

career, so to get a number one record it 

was great. 

In all honesty, I don’t think You Me at 

Six will get another number one record 

because of the way music is now analysed 

and used by streaming platforms. 

Well, I can’t give you exclusives, but what 

I can say is that you can probably expect 

a lot more from You Me at Six, we be 

playing more live shows and festivals. 

Like you say, never say never as you never 

know what’s will come out of You Me at 

Six right now! 

Very exciting! 

For myself it would be that we achieved a 

number one album in our musical career. 

But I would say, never say never! 

Never say never, I mean who knows!

Lewis Ritson 

can come 

again...

A series of articles which will feature boxing facts 

from both the past to the present... 

A defeat in boxing is not the 

end of the world it can of course 

be a little demoralising at the 

time for a fighter especially if 

he is expected to win. On the 13 

October 2018 British lightweight 

champion Lewis Ritson nicknamed 

the Sandman entered 

the ring at Metro Radio Arena 

in Newcastle Tyne and Wear. 

Ritson with an undefeated 

record of 17 victories with 11 

coming inside the distance 

was contesting the vacant 

European crown. His opponent 

Francesco Patera of Belgium 

was a former holder of the title 

and his resume consisted of 22 

fights with just three defeats 

winning eight of his said bouts 

inside the distance (including a 

disqualification victory). 

Expectations were high for 

the British fighter but boxing 

pundits were aware that Patera 

while not a world class fighter 

was no walk over. The man from 

Belgium was a slick operator 

who would not submit easily 

and would hence give hence 

Ritson all sorts of problems to 

overcome. Despite that a Ritson 

victory in front of his home 

fans looked to be on the cards 

perhaps not inside the distance 

but a solid 12 round points win 

looked the likely scenario. 

Patera was no stranger to the 

UK on the 15 October 2016 

he challenged Sean Dodd 

for the World Boxing Council 

International lightweight crown. 

This contest took place at the 

Echo Arena in Liverpool. Patera 

came up short when he lost a 10 

round points decision. 

There was no doubt plans in 

place for Ritson should he 

defeat Patera, a possible two 

defences of the European crown 

mixed in with a few non-title 

bouts before advancing towards 

a world title shot. The future 

looked set and exciting for 

Ritson but opponent Patera 

had plans of his own he too was 

ambitious. The fight went the 

full route of 12 rounds and the 

visitor showed indeed that he 

was not a fighter with a loser’s 

mentality he came to win and 

win he did. Patera proved to 

be the better man on the night 

and took the decision and the 

championship and shocked the 

British fighter in the process. 

This was a bitter pill for 

Ritson to swallow since he 

was emerging into a fighter 

of prominence one who was 

capturing the fight public’s 

attention with his exciting 

performances and looked to be 

a major star of the future. 

Ritson must now regroup and 

go back to the drawing board 

with his team and discover 

just what went wrong. 

Truthfully very few fighters 

are able to go through their 

professional careers without 

a loss on their record. Those 

who have met with defeat 

have often come back better 

fighters having learnt from the 

experience. 

Ritson has the talent to get 

over this setback and put the 

loss behind him and go on to 

higher honours. After a rest he 

can return to the ring in 2019 

and perhaps indulge in a three 

or four bout’s before setting 

his sights on the European 

crown again. If Patera is still the 

reigning continental champion 

during that time a Ritson- 

Patera return bout would be 

an immediate attraction. The 

British fighter who is promoted 

by Matchroom Boxing can 

extract revenge over his former 

conqueror and hence put 

himself back on course for a 

world title shot.

How to try the pose: 

1. Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in 

front of you, buttocks supported on a folded 

blanket. Bend your knees, put your feet on the 

floor, then slide your left foot under your right leg 

to the outside of your right hip. Lay the outside of 

the left leg on the floor. Step the right foot over 

the left leg and stand it on the floor outside your 

left hip. The right knee will point directly up at the 

ceiling. 

2. Exhale and twist toward the inside of the right 

thigh. Press the right hand against the floor just 

behind your right buttock, and set your left upper 

arm on the outside of your right thigh near the 

knee. Pull your front torso and inner right thigh 

snugly together. 

3. Press the inner right foot very actively into the 

floor, release the right groin, and lengthen the 

front torso. Lean the upper torso back slightly, 

against the shoulder blades, and continue to 

lengthen the tailbone into the floor. 

4. You can turn your head in one of two 

directions: Continue the twist of the torso by 

turning it to the right; or counter the twist of the 

torso by turning it left and looking over the left 

shoulder at the right foot. 

5. With every inhalation lift a little more through 

the sternum, pushing the fingers against the floor 

to help. Twist a little more with every exhalation. 

Be sure to distribute the twist evenly throughout 

the entire length of the spine; don’t concentrate 

it in the lower back. Stay for 30 seconds to 1 

minute, then release with an exhalation, return 

to the starting position, and repeat to the left 

for the same length of time. Watch a video

Festive 

Wines 

The term Festive wines usually refers to Christmas or any 

other occasion for celebration. 

BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER 

At this time of year, we can concentrate on a 

Christmas meal and see what wine could be 

chosen at each stage of the meal. 

Of course, it can apply to any time of the year 

or for any celebration dinner. 

An Aperitif... 

Before the meal proper it is usual for an 

aperitif to be served and the favourite would 

be a sparkling wine. Now a popular drink 

with a wide choice available. At the top 

end Champagne is the best but can prove 

expensive. Some cheap Champagnes are 

available but they would have spent less time 

maturing in the cellars and may disappoint. 

The grapes generally are Chardonnay, Pinot 

Noir and Pinot Meunier. 

Of other sparkling wines the leading types are 

Prosecco from Italy and Cava from Spain. 

Prosecco has recently had enormous success 

which is leading to overproduction by 

increasing the vineyard sizes. Be wary of the 

very cheap ones as a result of this unless you 

are using them as a mixer drink. The grape 

used is the Glera which tastes different to the 

champagne grapes and a lot of it is made in a 

tank rather than a bottle. 

Cava is very popular and uses a similar 

method of production to champagne. The

grapes are different again, being generally 

from Parellada, Macabeo, Xarel-Lo and 

Chardonnay. The word Cava stands for 

sparkling wine. There are many other 

sparkling wines made around the world, New 

Zealand, South Africa, USA, Portugal etc. 

Another popular aperitif is called KIR. For this 

you use 4 parts dry wine and 1 part Cassis 

(Blackcurrant Liqueur). If you use sparkling it 

is called a KIR Royale and with red wine it is a 

KIR Cardinal. 

The Starter... 

For meat dishes, red wine is always a good 

match. A good Burgundy is ideal but Rhone 

wines like Chateauneuf-Du-Pape can match. 

With Ham it seems to attract a lighter red like 

Beaujolais but Pork could work well with a 

lighter white wine such as Vouvray or Vinho 

Verde. 

Back to a full bodied red for Sausages, Spare 

Ribs and Steak and Kidney Pies. 

Pasta and Pizza seem to go well with light 

reds and sharp whites. Lasagne and Spaghetti 

Bolognaise would require a stronger red. 

From the variety of starters that are 

made it really comes down to 

the main ingredients and the 

sauces used. For fish and 

white meat starters a dry 

white wine would be OK. 

Stronger flavoured dishes 

would require a stronger 

tasting wine and would 

depend on the sauces used. 

Meat or Pate could match a 

red wine, preferably a light red or a 

strong tasting Rose. 

The Main Meal... 

With white meat the wine would need to 

match the ingredients and the sauces. Turkey 

at Christmas with Cranberry sauce could be 

matched by a strong white wine but a light/ 

medium red such as Beaujolais could prove a 

good match. 

Dessert... 

The sweetness of a wine is 

important when matching a 

dessert. It needs to be as sweet 

or even sweeter than the dessert 

it is served with. Chocolate is an 

odd match. 

Dark chocolate can match surprisingly 

with a Pinot Noir red, particularly with 

Californian Pinot Noir. This is as a result of the 

rich fruitiness of the wine. 

Sauterne, one of the most famous sweet 

wines can suffer from Botrytis which 

concentrates the flavours and sweetness of 

the wine. 

The Muscat grape is used in many dessert 

wines and should be considered. 

Conclusions... 

It is said that any wine can match any food , it depends on whether you like it. That’s a 

personal view and there is a lot of truth in that. What is suggested is based on many peoples 

views and is mentioned as a suggestion only.

Raspberry 

Bakewell 

Roulade 

Sure to be a family favourite, 

this warming winter one-pot has 

gently simmered sausages, hearty 

cannellini beans and a crunchy 

breadcrumb topping. 

1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Line 

a swiss roll tin about 30cm x 23cm with baking 

paper. Sift the icing sugar all over the paper and 

scatter over half of the flaked almonds. 

2. Sift the plain flour and baking powder into a 

bowl to aerate it, then stir in the ground almonds 

and lemon zest. Whisk the eggs and sugar in a 

stand mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy 

and will make a ribbon trail that doesn’t disappear 

straight away when you lift the whisk up, (this will 

take about 8 minutes). Fold the flour mixture in 

with a large metal spoon and scrape the mixture 

into the prepared tin, levelling the top. 

3. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the sponge is 

golden and just set to your touch, it should also 

sound crackly. Dust another sheet of baking paper 

with caster sugar and turn out the sponge onto it. 

Peel off the top paper gently and roll the sponge 

up carefully, using the sheet of paper underneath. 

Leave rolled up until completely cooled. 

Ingredients 

• Icing sugar 2 tbsp 

• Flaked almonds 60g, toasted and crushed 

• Plain flour 50g 

• Baking powder 1 tsp 

• Ground almonds 50g 

• Lemon 1, zested and juiced 

• Eggs 4 

• Golden caster sugar 75g, more for dusting 

• Double cream 200ml 

• Raspberry jam 150g 

4. Softly whip the double cream, then add 2 tsp 

lemon juice and mix lightly. Unroll the sponge 

and spread it with a layer of raspberry jam, then 

dot over the lemon cream and roll the sponge up 

again. Lift it onto a serving plate. Mix some icing 

sugar with lemon juice to make icing the thickness 

of double cream, drizzle this backwards and 

forwards over the roulade, and scatter with the 

remaining flaked almonds.

A classic, vintage, bittersweet cocktail. Simple and balanced. 

INGREDIENTS 

• 1-2 measures of Norfolk Gin 

• Favourite tonic 

• Ice 

GARNISH 

• Strip of orange zest 

• Sprig of fresh thyme 

GLASS 

• Highball or balloon 

METHOD - Pour Norfolk Gin 

into your favourite glass, add 

ice and tonic. Gently squeeze 

the orange zest over the glass 

to release the oils. Finish with 

a sprig of fresh thyme.

Method 

• Preheat the oven to gas 5, 190°C, fan 

170°C. 

• Cook the cocktail sausages wrapped in 

bacon to pack instructions, adding the 

Yorkshire puddings for the last 10 mins. 

• Remove from oven. 

A family favourite... 

Tiny versions of a British classic, these 

Miniature Toad in the Holes are great as a 

side dish or an inventive Christmas party 

canapé. 

• Divide the chutney between the 

puddings and put a sausage inside each. 

• Finish with a dot of English mustard 

and some fresh thyme. 

Its ok to cheat a little at Christmastime! 

Frozen Yorkshire puddings and preprepared 

pigs in blankets mean this 

fantastically festive nibble is ready in just 

half an hour. 

Now all you have to worry about is what 

cocktails to serve. 

Ingredients 

• 210g pack Tesco Finest cocktail 

sausages wrapped in bacon 

• 230g pack frozen Yorkshire puddings 

• 5 tbsp caramelised red onion chutney 

• English mustard 

• Fresh thyme 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

On the banks of Fritton Lake as 

part of the impressive 5000- 

acre Somerleyton Estate, it is 

hard to miss the impressive 

mustard yellow façade of The 

Fritton Arms, dating back to 

the 16th century. 

Re-opened in 2014 

by Hugh Crossley, 

known to most as 

Lord Somerleyton, 

this country retreat 

makes the perfect 

place to relax with 

loved ones. Boasting nine simple but elegantly 

furnished rooms overlooking stunning views 

of the grounds, you wouldn’t be mistaken 

to think they had drawn inspiration from the 

popular Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire. 

Here come the girls... 

I arrive for a much-needed girlie get away 

with my best friend, so it’s a twin room for 

us, and not a bad one at that. Exposed oak 

beams contrast against modern luxurious 

bedspreads, designer lamps along with

fabulous Cowshed products available to us 

during our stay, a perfect English country 

house experience. 

We glam up and head down for dinner. The 

bar area, once an old inn, still retains its 

original look, right down to the stuffed pike 

which hangs on the wall. With a G&T in hand 

we peruse the menu next to the roaring log 

fire, the smell of the smoke reminds me it’s 

not summer anymore. 

Wine and dine... 

The restaurant–rustic with exposed brickwork– 

has an informal yet smart appearance with 

outbreaks of personality–my eyes are drawn 

to the splash of vibrant colour of the bright 

blue mis-matched chairs, whilst freshly cut 

seasonal flowers rest on each window next to 

modern pieces of art which add contemporary 

flourishes to the walls. 

There is a well-stocked bar featuring local ales 

and an original wine list including The Arm’s 

wine of the month. You won’t go far wrong 

with this month’s pick the Italian Sauvignon 

Blanc. 

Laying claim to zero food miles the menu is 

enticing and features locally sourced fresh 

ingredients directly from the estate. The 

land is mainly arable producing rapeseed oil, 

potatoes and barley, but it is also home to 

80 Welsh Black Cattle and 120 Norfolk Horn 

Lamb and Welsh Black Mountain Sheep, when 

they say Estate Lamb on the menu–they 

mean it! If they can’t find it on the Estate, they 

source locally wherever possible.

A first time for everything... 

Luckily for us, we had General Manager 

Will on hand to guide as through the tasty 

options. As a strict vegetarian, I opted for the 

‘Wild Mushroom Pappardelle with Tenderstem 

Broccoli and Toasted Walnuts’ to start 

followed by the ‘Butternut Squash 

Risotto, Parmesan 

and Toasted Seeds’. After 

recently returning from 

Italy, it was a gentle nod 

to Italian cuisine I was 

accustomed to, sending 

me right back to the Amalfi 

Coast. Kirsty, on the other 

hand, was feeling rather 

adventurous, (most likely down 

to the G&T). She selected the 

‘Deep Fried Cod Cheeks with Tartare 

Sauce’. She then insisted on trying the ‘Slow 

Cooked Estate Rabbit and Barley Broth with 

Herb Oil’, for her main - it was the first time 

she’d tried game and I couldn’t stop her 

raving about it afterwards–much my dismay! 

The proof is in the pudding… 

Predictably, after two wonderful 

courses we were full, but it didn’t 

take much to persuade us to try 

a dessert. I say ‘a’ dessert–after 

deliberating for five minutes, 

Will could see us struggling, 

so like every great matradee 

he had a suggestion, “why not 

try them all” he asked? What a 

brilliant idea. The next thing we 

know, armed with spoons, we are 

in a fight to feast on the selection of 

Sticky Toffee Pudding with Rum & Raisin 

Ice Cream, Somerleyton Blackberry Jam

Bakewell Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream, Apple 

& Cinnamon Crumble with Honey Custard 

and Chocolate Brownie. What more could a 

girl want? Nothing is too much trouble here. 

A playful side… 

For those who like fun and games, The 

Fritton Arms has its own Billiard Room. I 

can’t say I would give Ronnie O’Sullivan a 

run for his money, but I gave it my best shot. 

It was the perfect way to end the night–we 

certainly had a giggle or two and gave 

everyone else one at that! 

Whilst you are here… 

Somerleyton Hall, the stately home, is open to 

visitors from April to September (Tuesdays, 

Wednesdays–gardens only, Thursdays and 

Sundays)–the history of the house is interesting 

and the gardens are delightful, supplying the 

gorgeous cut flowers in the hotel. 

The verdict… 

Fritton suits weekend-breakers looking for a 

pretty and tranquil setting. With a mixture of 

old and new this yellow beacon on a lakeside 

setting will always be sure to brighten your day.

A sparkling delight that’s 

full of festive flavours… 

The recipe pairs pomegranate and 

cranberry to form a sweet, fruity 

base that is perfect for your favourite 

sparkling wine. The fun part

cranberries and a sprig of real pine. 

Method 

1. Gather the ingredients. 

2. Pour the liqueur and juice into a 

Champagne flute. 

Ingredients 

• 1 1/2 ounces pomegranate liqueur 

• 1 ounce cranberry juice 

• 3 ounces Champagne (chilled) 

• Garnish: cranberries (fresh) 

• Garnish: sprig of pine (or 

rosemary) 

3. Top with Champagne.

Paul Weller is the first artist to announce gigs as part of Forest Live 2019, the 

summer concert series promoted by the Forestry Commission. 

Paul’s latest release ‘True Meanings’, entered 

the UK charts at No 2. It is his fourteenth 

solo album and the twenty-sixth studio 

album of his career that began in 1977 with 

The Jam’s debut album ‘In the City’. 

Five era-defining albums followed before 

he experienced further recognition with The 

Style Council and subsequent success with 

numerous solo releases 

such as ‘Wild Wood’, ‘Wake 

Up The Nation’ and ‘Sonik 

Kicks’. 

Paul Weller’s versatility 

and creative edge has 

connected with fans across 

the generations, making 

him one of the most 

significant players of the 

British Music scene over 

the past four decades. 

A cultural icon, his impact, relevance and 

popularity with the public, fellow musicians 

and critics alike remains unabated in his 

milestone 60th year. 

Forest Live is a major outdoor live music 

series held every summer by Forestry 

Commission England in seven beautiful 

forests. 

Over 1.75 million people have attended a 

forest gig in the last eighteen years. Money 

raised from ticket sales helps to look after 

the nation’s forests sustainably, for people to 

enjoy and wildlife to thrive. 

Paul Weller made his Forest Live debut in 

2004 and has played to sell-out crowds ever

GENTLEMAN’S DUB CLUB 

Gentleman’s Dub Club release new single and album... 

After this past summer’s acclaimed project with The 

Nextmen, Gentleman’s Dub Club return with the 

hotly anticipated album, ‘Lost In Space.’ 

True connoisseurs of blending influences from 

genres such as dub, reggae, ska, bass culture, jazz, 

and everything in between, the band has adopted 

a futuristic tone as they continue their mission to 

discover the ultimate bassline. 

Pre-orders for the record launch started on Oct 5 th 

with first single, ‘Stardust’ and second single ‘Turning 

Back’ (Featuring Million Stylez) is set for release on 

the 7 th December, whilst the full album is due for 

release on the 25 th January 2019. 

Teaming up once again with the mighty Easy Star 

Records has resulted in only one outcome: a euphori 

journey through time, space and bass. Diving 

straight into the deep end with the ruckus that is 

‘Light The Fuse,’ the record is set up with rumbling 

heavyweight bass movements that naturally match 

the controlled chaos of ‘Eye Of The Storm’ and 

‘Midnight Healing.’ 

Meeting every unique end of the spectrum, 

Gentleman’s Dub Club once again draw on their 

incredible ability to fuse sounds together until 

they feel like they’ve always belonged. From the 

earth-rattling sounds of the first single ‘Stardust,’ 

to the blockbuster proportions of ‘Intergalactic’, 

the deep undulations of ‘Ground Shakin’ and onto 

the beautifully melodic and aptly titled ‘Out Of This 

World’ – no comet is left unburnt. 

Joining the band on this interstellar adventure are 

the equally awesome Million Stylez and Winston 

Francis, who feature on ‘Turning Back’ and ‘Walking 

Away’ respectively, both of which have feel-good, 

ear-to-ear smile vibes throughout. 

The well-known role of a debut single from a 

forthcoming album is to set the tone and create an 

intro for the delights that are to follow – ‘Stardust’ 

did exactly that, announcing itself with a flourish of 

fanfare-like horns. 

Set for release on the 7 th December, this reggae 

masterclass takes it up a notch with the 

unmistakable eccentric vocals of Million Stylez. 

Overflowing with groove and an infectious rhythm, 

it’s impossible not to move to this track. Infused 

with the origins of rocksteady, whilst combining the 

explosive signature rhythms that GDC are known 

for, ‘Turning Back’ ticks just about every box there 

is to tick. 

A colossal 2018 saw Gentleman’s Dub Club take 

their energetic live show across the UK, Europe, 

and beyond, with a hefty touring schedule including 

world famous festivals such as Bestival, Shambala 

and Boomtown, and gigs in such far flung places as 

Tunisia, Iceland and La Réunion. 

For now, it’s time to let the music do the talking - if 

you’ve been searching for an album to soundtrack 

a weekend of good vibes and a week of bouncing

Ideas around £5 

Now with a small budget, gifts are really just going to 

be token things. This is easy and pretty much what the 

supermarkets gifty isles are perfect for if you really have 

no idea. Simply opt for a prosecco or beer gift set- who 

doesn’t like those glasses to keep? 

Or the small pampering gifts, such as Nivea lip balms. 

The small treats are handy and often presented festivelygreat. 

Let’s be honest you could say these are made for 

the situation of our paths only really cross at the coffee 

machine! 

Ideas around £10- £15 

If you’re still lurking in the supermarket look at the gift sets 

in this price range, for example mugs or bigger pamper 

selections. You can also find nice packages in places such 

as Body Shop, Ted Baker and Boots- well known for their

Christmas 

Curiosities... 

Norwich Castle was 

originally designed to 

be a Royal palace but 

became a fortification. 

No Norman kings ever resided 

there and the only time Henry 

I is known to have stayed 

at Norwich Castle was for 

Christmas 1121. 

It has been claimed that Henry 

VIII is credited with adopting 

the turkey as a Christmas bird 

following its introduction to 

Britain from America in the 

1520s. It became very popular 

amongst the Tudor elite of 

Norfolk and was normally served 

in a coffin-shaped Christmas 

pie, where it was stuffed with 

numerous other game birds. 

Large Tudor Houses and Halls 

all over Norfolk, would invite 

musicians to entertain them and 

their guests. 

Christmas in the 1700s saw 

presents being exchanged 

for the first time. The custom 

of giving a Christmas box to 

tradesmen and servants also 

became commonplace, as did 

paying small amounts to those 

less well off. Most undertook 

these obligations cheerfully 

as did the Norfolk clergyman 

James Woodforde who made 

a note in 1788 that he paid 

sixpence each to 56 “poor 

people” in his parish, entertained 

some to dinner, and those 

who were too lame to come in 

person had their dinners sent 

to them. But many others were 

resentful of this mounting cost. 

By the time the 1720s had 

ended, up to 250,000 turkeys 

had been walked from Norfolk 

to the London markets in small 

flocks of 300-1000. They started 

the long walk in August and fed 

on stubble fields and feeding 

stations. Their feet were dipped 

in tar to protect them. The most 

common breeds of Turkey in 

the UK are the standard white, 

bronze and Norfolk black 

breeds. 

St. Mary’s church Worsted 

features in an old legend of the 

phantom White Lady who only 

appeared there when the clock 

struck midnight on Christmas 

Eve. In 1830, a drunken man 

swore that he would go there 

and ring the church bell at 

twelve, so that he could meet 

the Lady and give her a kiss. No 

bell sounded so those from the 

nearby King’s Arms inn went 

in search of him, only to find 

him a gibbering mess in the 

bell chamber. Back at the inn, 

he revived a little, only to start 

crying wildly “I’ve seen her! 

There! There!” Then he collapsed 

again and died. 

George V stated that 

Sandringham was the place he 

loved more than anywhere else 

in the world and it became the 

setting for the first Christmas 

broadcast in 1932. In 1957, 

Elizabeth II broadcast the first 

televised Christmas message 

from Sandringham. 

Eggnog became the drink for 

Christmas with poor families 

substituting expensive rum for 

sherry. But how did it come by 

its weird “nog” name? No one 

knows for sure, but historians 

decided that “nog” was in fact 

short for “noggin,” which was 

slang for a wooden cup, or a 

play on the Norfolk variety of 

beer also called nog. 

Christmas Eve 1994 saw Roys 

Chairman Fred Roy pass away at 

the age of 74.

that the floor tile wear rating (PEI rating) is suitable for your intended 

area/use. 

9. MAINTENANCE – GET THE RIGHT ADVICE - If you are purchasing natural stone tiles (i.e. travertine, 

marble, slate), make sure you get the right advice for sealing and treating the tiles before and after fixing. 

10. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR ADVICE - Don’t be afraid to ask sales assistants for advice.

Langleys Conservatories and Windows... 

Langleys was formed by the owner Simon 

Langley in 1987 and in its early days Simon not 

only designed and installed conservatories and

when all thro’ the house not a 

creature was stirring except for

On these cold, dark nights and on the run 

up to festive season some of you may fancy 

a beer at home in the evening and with the 

craft beer industry going from strength to 

strength then you’ve got plenty of choice, 

perhaps too much. 

So you fancy something a bit different but as 

your stare down the supermarket aisle you 

can’t see the wood for the trees, well I have 

the solution to that conundrum and all from 

the comfort of your own home. 

Started in September by Brothers Evan 

and Alex Herbert, BEER ME NOW is a beer 

subscription service that offers a fantastic 

range of beers and options to quench any 

thirst. Just tell the chaps your preferences, light 

or dark, stout or IPA and they will build your 

boxes to suit you. 

The beers are sourced from a wide range of 

small breweries across the country, you won’t 

find them in any supermarket so there’s a high 

probability that you’ll be trying them for the 

first time. 

The subscription boxes cost £25 each (if you 

don’t read this whole article) and will come 

with 8 beers, BEER ME NOW’s range means 

that no box will be the same, unless you’ve 

found a new favourite then simply tell the guys 

and they’d be happy to include it again.

After a very exciting year of shows 

at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, 

it’s finally time to raise the curtains 

on our annual pantomime, which this 

year is Sleeping Beauty. 

The final stone has been placed on Burytonia Castle, 

the flags have been raised and Fairy Fortune has 

worked her magic to give the historic auditorium a 

little extra sparkle, ready for opening night on Fri 

30 Nov. 

As a new-born baby, Princess 

Aurora was cursed by the evil 

Fairy Carabosse. On the day of 

her 16th birthday, Aurora will 

prick her finger on a spinning 

wheel and die. Will Nanny 

Fanny, King Edmund and 

Grub the kitchen boy be able 

to protect the un-suspecting 

princess? Will Fairy Fortune find 

a way to defeat her sister, the wicked Carabosse, 

and what part does the dashing Prince Florin have 

to play? 

Join us in the medieval kingdom of Burytonia for 

magic, mayhem and more. You’ll meet mythical 

beasts and even take a journey beneath the earth. 

Most importantly, you’ll discover if love really can 

conquer all. Another fabulous in-house production 

by Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, written by 

Chris Hannon, directed by Karen Simpson and with 

choreography by Julia Cave who is also featuring as 

the assistant director. 

You will need to act fast if you want to catch a seat 

in the weeks leading up to Christmas, the best 

availability is for performances in January. If you’re 

feeling like you need an extra sprinkling of Fairy 

Fortune’s magic, treat yourself to some tickets to our 

Gala Performance on Sun Dec 9 from 1pm. 

As well as a seat for the show, you’ll get to enjoy live 

music, a visit from Father Christmas, drinks and light 

nibbles before the show, ice creams and 

even goodie bags for the children. Plus, 

everyone is encouraged to join in the fun 

with a fancy dress competition before the 

show then starts at 2pm. 

Sleeping Beauty runs from Fri 30 Nov 

’18 right through to Sun 13 Jan ’19. There 

is a BSL interpreted performance Wed 

12 Dec at 2pm, there will be a Relaxed 

Performance Fri 11 Jan at 1.30pm and 

there are also touch tours available upon request.

MUSIC 

New World Service is a five piece 

covers band based in Suffolk. 

After forming in 2008, with a few 

changes to the line up over the years, 

the five members, Gavin Harmer, 

Darren Bland, John Wilson, James 

Irvine and Josh Woolnough, love 

performing all over Suffolk. 

The group cover a wide range of 

songs from different genres, including 

pop, rock and punk, this ranges from 

the 60s to the present day. 

They like nothing more than 

performing a lively and rocking set to 

their local fans, in pubs and clubs, and 

are available for private bookings and 

weddings. 

A few of their favourite covers 

include The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, 

Stereophonics, Duran Duran, Red Hot 

Chili Peppers, U2, and many more.

IT’S CHRISTMAS!... 

As you can see, me and my gang are 

ready for some festive action! 

Every year we throw on our Christmas Jumpers 

ready to pounce on some baubles. Uff! 

It ain’t all fun and games mind you… Christmas 

can be stressful for us pets. The change in 

routine, visitors, kids, loud music and decorations 

can worry us you know! Planning ahead can 

help minimise stress for pets and ensure they 

have a happy home at Christmas, too. 

Here are my top tips for helping all your furry 

friends have a stress-free Christmas: 

• Try to keep food, exercise, bed and toilet 

routines the same, consistency can help us feel 

more secure. 

retreat to in case they feel unsure. Try on top of 

wardrobes or under furniture – even cardboard 

boxes can make good hiding places. 

• Although Christmas is a busy time and 

there’s a lot to do and people to see, be careful 

about leaving us alone for any period which 

might cause us distress. I get extra sulky! 

• If you’re spending Christmas day with friends 

or family and your dog is coming with you, take 

something which smells familiar, like their bed, 

to help them feel secure. Take some of their 

favourite toys and chews to help keep them 

entertained.
