Shop downtown
Perry on
Saturday, Nov. 26
By Cather ine Edgemon
Perry Main
Street
coordinator
Perry officials and downtown business owners
are encouraging shoppers to have a big impact
on the local economy by shopping “small” on
Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24.
The event, which is downtown Perry’s fourth
observance, is a partnership between the Perry
Downtown Merchants Council and Perry Main
Street Advisory Board. This year 17 businesses
are participating in the observance.
“Small business is the backbone of not only the
city, but the county, state and nation,” said Perry
Mayor James E. Faircloth Jr. Faircloth views
Small Business Saturday as an opportunity to
recognize the role that small businesses play in
job creation, boosting the local economy and
protecting neighborhoods, while supporting
those businesses.
“Small businesses provide the majority of jobs in
any community,” Faircloth said. “Their growth,
prosperity and expansion truly determine the
success of a community.”
Faircloth said he urges everyone to shop local,
small businesses first and to tell others of the
positive experience they have shopping with
Perry’s downtown retailers.
“It (shopping locally) really does make a
difference,” he explained.
“Shopping small businesses keeps our
community healthy,” said Michelle Rhoades,
owner of Mossy Creek Natural. “When you
shop a small business, you help keep the revenue
“We understand the
responsibility of giving
back and keeping our
community strong,”
dollars local so that the city can build more
parks and create special events. You help the
small business owner support local non-profit
organizations.”
Rhoades said she has also advertised locally to
help local newspapers stay strong.
“We understand the responsibility of giving back
and keeping our community strong,” Rhoades
said, explaining that her business has donated
to or sponsored nearly a dozen local community
groups and schools in 2018 through donations
and fundraisers.
Event organizers said they expect Nov. 24 to
be one of the busiest shopping days ever in
downtown Perry.
Perry’s Main Street Program works closely
with community partners and the city
government to promote historic preservation
advocacy, business recruitment and retention,
beautification, marketing, events and many
other efforts to ensure that that heart continues
to be healthy.
Thanks to property and business owners who
had vision and loved the community enough
to invest in downtown, they helped turn around
the area to make it the attractive, bustling,
commercial district that it is today.
Trish Cossart, Perry Main Street Advisory Board
chairman and the owner of Cossart Design,
is proud to participate in an event that draws
attention to the historic heart of the community
and the businesses located there.
“When you shop locally with independentlyowned
stores, almost half of every dollar you
spend recirculates in the local community,”
Cossart said. “These funds pay the salaries of
people you know, allow the business owner
to purchase goods and serves from other
local businesses, help local governments
provide essential services and build a sense of
community.”
Thanks to families being more spread
out than ever before, today’s holiday
shoppers must figure out ways to get
holiday gifts to their destination on time.
The holiday season tends to be the busiest
time of year for many delivery services.
The following tips should help shoppers
ensure their loved ones’ gifts arrive on time.
• Ship directly. Adobe Analytics reported
that online shopping hit a record high of
$108.2 billion in the 2017 holiday shopping
season, and all indicators suggest online
shopping will only increase in the years
to come. Holiday shoppers who want to
ensure their loved ones will receive their
gifts on time can rely on online shopping.
When checking out, have gifts shipped
directly to loved ones’ homes. Many online
retailers will even wrap gifts for a nominal
fee.
• Research shipping options. In 2018,
Christmas falls on a Tuesday. Shoppers
who plan to rely on two-day or overnight
shipping should keep that in mind. Some
delivery services may be open throughout
the weekend before Christmas, while others
may only be open on Saturday. Last-minute
shoppers, whether they’re shopping online
or in-person, should confirm their shipping
options well in advance of Christmas.
Because Christmas is on a Tuesday this
year, getting gifts to their destination on
time may require shoppers to purchase and
ship them earlier than they otherwise might.
insurance can ease shoppers’ concerns
about lost or stolen packages. Just be sure
to keep all invoices and receipts in case
claims must be filed. Shoppers also should
ask for tracking numbers on all packages
so they can confirm when packages are
delivered.
• Properly secure the package. Many
delivery services now have off-site drop-off
boxes that can make it easy to send gifts.
This is a convenient service, but shoppers
who use them won’t be able to have a
company employee provide in-person
confirmation that their packages are secured
to company standards. Poorly packaged
items may never be shipped. Visit the
shipping company’s website for packaging
guidelines, and include a business card and
duplicate label inside the package just in
case it is damaged after being dropped off.
• Purchase package insurance. Consumer
Reports notes that UPS and FedEx
shipments automatically come with
declared-value coverage of up to $100.
(Note: Declared value is the carrier’s
maximum liability.) Purchasing additional
holiday safety
When shopping how to be certain you’re
buying safe toys this holiday season
Few things compare to seeing the joy on a
child’s face upon opening a holiday gift.
Many adults remember holiday gifts they
received as children, and holiday shoppers
often try to look for gifts that will be just as
memorable to the special youngsters in their
lives.
Shoppers might have kids’ smiles on their
minds when holiday shopping, but it’s just
as important to focus on safety when buying
gifts for children. Prevent Blindness®, an
organization devoted to ensuring everyone
enjoys healthy vision from infancy through
adulthood, offers the following tips to toy
buyers who want to make sure they give safe
gifts to kids this holiday season.
Read all warnings and instructions on the
box. Before taking a toy to the check
out line, give the packaging a thorough readthrough,
paying particular attention to product
warnings and instructions. Such warnings are
designed to keep kids safe. When buying toys
online, only purchase toys that include the
warnings within the product description.
• Purchase age-appropriate toys. Kids’ toys
come with age recommendations, which are
typically listed on the front of the packaging.
Stick to these recommendations. Kids might
not have the ability to use toys designed for
older children, and such toys might not be safe
for them to use, so it’s always best to stick to
the age guidelines.
• Avoid
certain toys.
Toys with
sharp or
rigid points,
spikes, rods,
or dangerous
edges can pose
a threat to
youngsters.
Avoid such
toys, opting
for toys with
rounded and/
or dull edges
instead.
• Stick to
sturdy toys.
Kids do not often treat their toys delicately.
Toys will be dropped or thrown, so choose
sturdy toys that can withstand being dropped
or thrown without breaking into tiny pieces.
Tiny shards can pose a choking hazard to
curious youngsters.
• Purchase toys with the ASTM designation.
ASTM International is an international
standards organization that develops and
publishes voluntary consensus technical
standards for a wide range of products,
including toys. Prevent Blindness notes that
toys with the letters ASTM on the packaging
have been tested and met the toy standards set
for by ASTM.
• Avoid toys with parts that shoot or fly off.
These types of toys can damage the eyes and
lead to other accidents or injuries.
When shopping for toys for children this
holiday season, shoppers must consider safety
first.
