§ Academic insiders might wonder how I landed a job in the Rochester business school after being a
student in the economics department. Universities usually do not hire their own graduates. The answer is a
long story, the short version of which is that I had been teaching at the business school while a graduate
student, and when my first job fell through at the last minute, Bill Meckling, the school’s dean, offered me a
one-year position as a stopgap measure, and I ended up sticking around for a few more years.
