@ODonovanWaste SUMMER 2018
Welcome from
Jacqueline O’Donovan
Jacqueline O’Donovan
Managing Director
The summer’s flown by and the O’Donovan team has been involved in
a number of industry activities, alongside our day-to-day business.
We were extremely proud to have received our British Standard ISO
39001 Road Safety Management certificate which was presented in
person to Lee Hayhow, our Chief Operating Officer by BSI’s Managing
Director Anne Scorey (pictured below) - needless to say this has pride
of place in our HQ!
We were delighted to be
involved with a very intimate
Ed Sheeran gig at theLondon
Irish Centre in Camden town
- more on this on pages 4-5.
City of London Cartmarking
Keeping up with hundreds of
years’ of tradition in July we
headed off to the Guildhall
with one of our vintage
lorries for the 501st annual
Cartmarking event at the
Guildhall. A great day was
had by all!
SUMMER 2018
Driver checks go digital
We’ve recently invested in a brand new piece of
technology - a drivers’ check app from CheckedSafe.
Desgined to move daily inspection checks
completely online, the CheckedSafe app removes
the need for time-consuming, paper-based manual
checks - not to mention the filing and storage!
The smartphone app has empowered both our
drivers and managers alike; all information gathered
in the app provides us with real-time insights
and helps speed up essential processes and
communications between drivers, technicians and
managers.
Our drivers are able to add detailed notes, photos
and actions against any found defects and the app
records GPS co-ordinates and duration of checks
which provides peace of mind that adequate time is
being spent on these vital checks.
/OdonovanWasteDisposal
@ODonovanWaste
Easy to use and fully customisable, the app has
meant that we have been able to modify the checks to suit our business operation. With safety as
our number one priority, a system that contributes to overall vehicle compliance and health and
safety has been a welcome addition to O’Donovan.
Darran Harris, Director of CheckedSafe commented “We are delighted to welcome O’Donovan
Waste as a customer. They are a very progressive and forward-thinking company who are
constantly looking at ways of improving their systems. By using CheckedSafe, they can be
confident in the knowledge that they are managing compliance efficiently and thoroughly. We are
delighted with the ease with which their users have adopted the system. Hopefully the rest of the
industry will follow suit. “
The knowledge to ensure best practice
Lee Hayhow, our Chief Operations Officer has joined our ranks of FORS
Practitioners, having completed the ten FORS workshops to achieve
Practitioner status.
As a FORS Gold operator, it’s essential to ensure we remain at
the forefront with our knowledge, which helps retain our FORS
accreditation - which we’ve held for 7 consecutive years.
As a FORS Practitioner, Lee is putting his new found knowledge into
practise within our operations on a daily basis - well done Lee!
SUMMER 2018
Supporting the Irish community in London
At what was possibly the most exciting event we’ve ever been part of, the amazing
figure of £250,000 was raised to help support the development of the London Irish
Centre (LIC). Established in 1954, the LIC is at the heart of the Irish community in the
capital and aims to provide outstanding care, culture and community to the Irish.
Needless to say this is a charity very close to O’Donovan’s hearts, we’re extremely proud of our Irish
heritage and have had a long association with the LIC.
@ODonovanWaste
The unique fund-raising event, of which we were headline sponsors, took place on 19 June. It was
an evening with the charity’s patron Dermot O’Leary and Ed Sheeran in attendance, plus a range of
other special guests. All those lucky enough to be there were treated to an intimate performance
from Ed Sheeran - with only 400 in attendance . The night went on into the small hours with
Dermot and a range of other celebrity DJs taking to the decks.
The incredible sum raised on the night is the start of ambitious fundraising plans for the LIC.
We were thrilled to play a big part in the
success of the event and supporting the Irish
community here in London has never been
more important.
Customer email prize draw
We ran an email competition in advance of the event,
to offer all our customers the chance to win two
tickets to the night in a free prize draw.
The lucky winner, Neil Sheehan (pictured left, with
O’Donovan Sales Manager Caroline Munro) from
Rochford Construction said:
“It was an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity to
see the biggest act in the music business today in
a truly unique setting. My wife and I had a fantastic
evening. O’Donovan have chosen a great charity
to support, one that really helps any Irish men and
women struggling to cope with the pressures of living
in London. Thanks to all at O’Donovan Waste for the
opportunity to see Ed Sheeran.”
SUMMER 2018
A winning summer
Over the last few months, we’ve been lucky enough to have been recognised in a number of
industry awards:
MRW National Recycling
Award (left & right) - we
won the Health & Safety
Initiative category which
recognises best practice
in recycling and waste
management.
Centralus Outstanding Employee Engagement award - for
creating an environment that keeps employees happy,
healthy and motivated.
Family Business United awards - Family Business of the Year
London & South East category. Jacqueline also shared our
story at the IFB Conference before the awards.
Women’s Economic Forum (WEF), Woman of the Decade in Enterprise and Leadership - Jacqueline
was presented with this surprise award at the WEF Annual Conference - a global initiative to
empower change in all walks of life and inspire women.
O’Donovan goes Swedish
We were delighted to be invited to Scania’s HQ in Sweden for
the official launch of their new urban vehicles.
Designed specifically for city conditions, these vehicles offer
a range of benefits with safety being the most important
factor. The vehicles offer excellent visibility, a lowered driving
position and dashboard, putting drivers at the same level as
other vehicles on the roads.
The trip also gave our CEO Michael a chance to indulge his
passion of vintage lorries!
Inside Out: Suzannah Nichol, MBE, Build UK
Suzannah is the Chief Executive of Build UK, the leading
representative organisation for the UK construction industry.
Inspired by a site visit during a week’s work experience, she
achieved a degree in Construction Management before starting
her career as a site engineer. She then qualified as a health
and safety professional before taking over the reins at the
National Specialist Contractors’ Council. After 13 years leading
the specialist sector, Suzannah was the driving force behind
the merger to form Build UK, bringing the industry together
within one organisation. Under her leadership, Build UK is at
the forefront of improving business performance, increasing
productivity and recruiting, training and retaining talent across the industry.
A passionate advocate for construction, Suzannah is recognised and respected for her work with
government, media and key industry stakeholders. She was awarded and MBE in 2005.
Q: Which aspect of your industry has most influenced
you in recent years?
The way it has come together under Build UK shows that the
industry does want to work together and gives me confidence
we can make a difference - even if sometimes it doesn’t quite
look or feel like it!
Q: What do you enjoy most about your profession?
Something moves forward every day so no two days are ever
the same.
Q: What single thing would improve the quality of your
life?
Ooh can I have two? Generally for everyone to be more positive
but personally to have a driver (maybe even a helicopter).
Driving to meetings or visiting family (when I can’t go by train)
is not an effective use of my time when there are so many
other things I could be doing.
Q: What will you be spending more on in 2019?
Holidays! I have decided that we work so hard most of the year
that Team Nichol deserves a top-notch holiday that caters for
all of us.
Q: What will you be spending less on?
Clothes. My daughter challenged me to use my existing
wardrobe rather than buy any new clothes.
Q: What’s been your greatest business challenge?
Creating Build UK and bringing the key players in construction
together within one organisation - a challenge I shared with
my Deputy Chief Executive Jo Fautley. Definitely a team effort.
Q: What keeps you awake at night?
Nothing. I am a very lucky girl with a great family & friends and I
love my job. To keep up with both I need my sleep and have the
enviable skill of being able to sleep anywhere!
Q: Where would you like to be right now?
Either round my dining table with my closest friends or out on a
long country walk with my dog Ted.
Q: What’s the most fun you’ve ever had at work?
It has to be sailing in the Little Britain Challenge Cup - we raced
this year as Team Inspiring Construction we all worked hard but
laughed a lot too.
Q: Is there one thing you avoid doing at all costs?
I must confess I will duck the ironing if I can and my wonderful
husband Mr N is just so much better at it than I am.
Q: What will we be talking about in our industry in 12
months’ time?
Fingers crossed - how Brexit wasn’t as bad as we all thought...
Q: If you could change one thing about the industry
what would it be?
Just one thing wouldn’t have the impact we need but I would
start with more honesty and fair payment throughout the
supply chain.
Q: What’s your biggest vice?
Chocolate ice cream - not sure that even counts does it! But I
play netball & badminton to earn it...
What we’ve been up to
Supporting the Lighthouse Charity
In May our very own Mick ‘The
Rock’ Rocket took part in a white
collar boxing event, where
construction fought construction
in five exciting bouts.
This black tie event saw a
champagne reception, a 3 course
dinner and of course some nail
biting boxing!
Exchanging Places
Throughout the summer
months we’ve been out
and about with a team of
volunteers and our lorries
helping to educate our local
communities on road safety
and how drivers and cyclists
can share the roads safely.
Raising funds for great causes
As always the team in Head Office have been taking part in lots of fun activities to help raise money
for some causes close to our hearts. We regularly have ‘dress down Fridays’, recently these have
been in support of Mental Health Awareness Week and Soccer Aid. For Mental Health Awareness
Week even our lorries were in green - with ribbons to help raise awareness.
