@ODonovanWaste SPRING 2018
Welcome from
Jacqueline O’Donovan
Since the last edition of O’D News I’m delighted to report we’ve
been awarded the British Standard ISO 39001 in Road Traffic Safety
Management. We’re the first dedicated waste management company
to achieve the standard - a massive achievement for us as a
family-run business. More on how we became accredited is opposite.
As part of our road safety mission our Commercial Director, Richard
Clarke, recently took part in a Vision Zero workshop at the City of
London which looked at the strategies, policies and practical steps
to reduce danger in the capital. Vision Zero’s aim is to ensure that by
2041 deaths and series injuries from road traffic collisions in the City
will have been totally eradicated. So many of us have a part to play in
making sure this can become a reality and much of what’s included in
this newsletter is a clear demonstration how we’re working to support
this process.
Jacqueline O’Donovan
Managing Director
Breaking down barriers to success
2nd May saw Jacqueline taking to the stage at the Women in
Transport - Breaking Down Barriers to Success event. It was
extremely well attended with over 256 delegates and a waiting
list of 65!
The session involved some lively and positive stories from
a panel of speakers, including Jacqueline, Holly Price - VP
National Federation of Demolition Contractors, Lynn Way -
VP National Association of Scaffolding Contractors and Mark
Lomas - Head of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion from HS2. The
audience was also given the opportunity to ask the panel
about their career success, lessons learnt and gender parity
issues across their industries. It was exciting to hear some
great stories
of progress
and to see the
issue moving
forward.
Leading the way in road traffic safety
In May we achieved a momentous milestone by becoming
the first dedicated waste company to receive ISO
39001 certification from BSI. This standard sets out the
minimum requirements for a Road Safety Traffic Safety
Management Systems with the aim of reducing the
number of deaths and serious injuries from road traffic
accidents.
We were keen to achieve the 39001 Certification
having already been accredited to ISO 9001 (Quality
Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management
and BH OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety).
39001 sits well alongside our focus on road safety,
including our FORS Gold status which we’ve achieved for
seven consecutive years and as a CLOCS Champion.
As part of our work toward to the 39001 certification we
enhanced our existing and comprehensive safety system
and were able to demonstrate cohesive processes in each
of our operations. We also went about refining objectives
and action plans that fulfil the requirements set out by
the Standard.
ISO 39001 concentrates on a management framwork
focussed on enhancing all areas of road traffic safety. Our
road safety goals and objectives, aimed at improving our
already high standards, have now been underpinned by
the accomplishment of the ISO 39001 certification.
Jacqueline said “ I am absolutely thrilled that we,
as a family run business, are the first dedicated
waste management company to achieve the ISO
39001 certification from BSI in road safety. This
reaffirms our commitment to the welfare and
safety of all road users as well as our own drivers,
demonstrating our efforts to ensure our operations
not only comply but surpass the statutory
regulations.”
What is BS ISO 39001?
The consequences of neglecting road traffic safety
can be tragic for those involved, with little required
to turn a minor incident into a tragic accident. BS ISO
39001 can also be adapted to organizations of all sizes
to help them identify threats to road traffic safety and
minimize operational risks .The standard is designed
to help you implement a best practice framework in
your organization – helping you to meet legal, industry
and stakeholder requirements and at the same
time reducing your impact on communities and the
environment.
Find out more at: bsigroup.com
“Road traffic safety lies at the core of
a wide range of business activities
– for example maintaining an
organization’s reputation, protecting
income and revenue opportunity,
managing business risk and
conducting a business responsibly.
By achieving certification to ISO
39001, it demonstrates O’Donovan
Waste is committed to the safety and
welfare of both its employees and the
general public by taking a structured,
evidence-based and holistic approach
towards its road-traffic safety
management.”
LoCity Roadshow - sharing our experience
As a LoCity Champion we took part in the Programme’s most recent
Roadshow - Fuels in Action at Kempton Park. The LoCity Programme
looks to stimulate the uptake of low emission commercial vehicles
and aims to prepare and support industry in advance of the
implementation of the Ultra Low Emission Zone in 2020.
The Roadshow which took place in March featured three seminars
focussing on Electric, Gas and Renewable Fuels and Transport and
Jacqueline took to the stage to share our experience of trialling a
100% electric van as part of our operation and our exploration of the
charging options.
What we found:
Challenges:
• Travel distance limited - 70
mile round trip
• Time to charge - 8-10 hours
• Access to charging points is
challenging but improving
• Choice of vehicle size is
currently limited - range of
vehicles not available yet
• Initial cost - currently more
expensive to purchase
• Providing the infrastructure
for a larger fleet would be
difficult, in particular having
charging stations
Benefits:
• Reduced running costs -
average fuel cost per mile
30p vs EV 4p. Fuel saving:
£6760 p/a
• With less moving parts are
cheaper to maintain. 80%
less running costs
• Huge saving for London
operators as congestion
charge exempt
• Funding available - we got a
‘PlugIn’ grant of just under
£5k
• Lower CO2 and NOx
• Improved air quality
Our driver’s feedback:
• ‘Lovely to drive’
• Automatically recharges
when slowing down and
braking
• ‘Automatic gearbox is very
smooth’
• Battery does not discharge
when the vehicle isn’t moving
• Some anxiety around
charging - switched off
heaters to save battery
Jacqueline joins the Institute of Couriers
In February Jacqueline was honoured to become a Fellow
at the Institute of Couriers’ 2018 Gowning ceremony at
the House of Lords. She received the respected hood of
fellowship in recognition of her vision for freight in the
final mile environment.
Lord Falkland handed out twelve 2018 fellowships
welcoming several influential leaders on the House of
Lords’ terrace and following tradition, existing fellows
formed a line to welcome the new twelve.
IOC President Lord Falkland said “I welcome Jacqueline to
the House of Lords for her IOC gown, this recognises her
work with FORS, CLOCS and LoCity in a focus supporting
final mile vision.”
Meet the latest additions to our fleet
Reducing the impact of construction logistics
Two members of staff recently undertook a brand new training course for
our industry: the Construction Logistics Programme’s Site Access Traffic
Marshal training which equips delegates with the knowledge and skills to
effectively control the point where a construction site meets the public
highway.
Operations Officer Lee Hayhow and Transport Manager Shane Brown
(Pictured right) took part in the one-day course which is approved
by Transport for London and accredited by the Chartered Institute of
Logistics and Transport. Unlike other Traffic Mashal courses available
the Construction Logistics Programme course presents delegates with
new content that focuses on road safety, congestion and efficiency and
takes the role of the Site Access Traffic Marshal to a new level ensuring
the responsible person fully understands their role and underpins the
importance of road safety.
For more information on the course visit the Construction Logistics
Jacqueline to judge
at Motor Transport
Awards
Jacqueline’s been invited to join the line up of judges
for this year’s 32nd annual Motor Transport Awards
in the categories of Customer Care and Fleet Truck of
the Year.
Safe Urban Driving
All our drivers regularly undertake a number of training
courses and Safe Urban Driving (SUD) is just one
example. Different from the usual classroom-based
training, the SUD course takes the drivers out on bicycles
to experience the road from a different perspective.
Delivered in one day, delegates complete a classroom
theory module, before their practical cycling module.
This training is fully aligned to help us to continue to
meet the requirements of our FORS accreditation and
the CLOCS Standard.
Steve Hobson, Editor, Motor Transport said, “The MT
Awards are now in their 32nd year and remain the
most sought-after accolade in road freight transport
because they are judged by a panel of independent
industry experts. This gives confidence that there
is a fair and transparent process for choosing the
shortlists and winners. We thank our judges for
giving us their time and bringing their considerable
expertise and experience to the two-day judging
process.”
Jacqueline commented “It was refreshing to see the
amount of debate and discussion prior to selection,
I was surprised and impressed with this approach to
awards judging”.
Our most recent course was on 19 May and all are
welcome to join us on any future courses. If you would
like to take part, please email sales@odonovan.co.uk
Learning more about the built environment
Recently Jacqueline visited BRE’s world-leading building science
centre. The centre has a mission to improve buildings and
infrastructure, through research and knowledge generation. The
organisation uses cutting edge research to develop a range of
products, services, standards and qualifications that are used around
the world to bring about positive change in the built environment.
On her visit Jacqueline said “It’s essential for O’Donovan to be at
the forefront in terms of knowledge about what is changing in and
planned for the built environment. Seeing the different types of
projects and innovation at the Centre was truly eye-opening”.
Martin Townsend, Director of Sustainability at BRE Global shares his views on the world opposite and you can find out
SPRING 2018
/OdonovanWasteDisposal
@ODonovanWaste
Inside Out: Martin Townsend, BRE Global Ltd
“So a bit about me, before I tackle the challenging questions which the good people at O’Donovan
have set to help me make you smile and trigger your thoughts and thinking in equal proportions
by luck or good judgement, I’ll let you decide. I have worked in all aspects of the construction
and waste industry during my career: as a regulator whilst at the Environment Agency, a policy
advisor to ministers and Secretary of State for the Environment, a construction supervisor on site
and as a site testing manager. On to today I work in Certification and research, with a focus very
much on supporting the industry to be the best it can be, by sharing best practise and the art of
the possible.”
Q: What will industry be talking about in 12 months’
time?
It very much depends on how quick the industry embrace
change. But one thing is for sure, as we see in the world around
us in our personal lives change is happening at an everincreasing
rate. The construction and waste industries are no
exception and there will be more change ahead.
Although not an extensive list, there are a number of factors
which will drive this: such as new materials, new ways in which
we build (and thereby ways in which we will de-construct
buildings at the end of their life), an increasing move to
urban areas (70% of people will live in cities by 2050, with
41 megacities of over 10 million around the world) which will
change our cityscapes and the way we build and when we build
(to minimise congestion).
There is a developing dialogue around how we can rethink the
relationship between suppliers and end-users and how that
can translate into a greater understanding of the benefits of
products and systems. I also anticipate a rise of the circular
economy, whereby we drastically reduce waste, whilst
increasing well-being - a circumstance which will certainly
change construction for the better. In this there is a new level
of transparency emerging, which will also enable a wider
group of people to hold large companies to account. I see this
in the conversations which I have daily - individuals involved in
construction are beginning to realise that their brands have a
responsibility beyond shareholder value and this is influencing
how projects are developed and completed.
Q: What’s your most embarrassing moment at work?
I remember when I started my working career managing a
surfacing gang, on the first (surprisingly) hot day of summer.
The gang weren’t expecting the heat from the sun, (but were
from the asphalt) so with no shorts or t-shirts to hand, they
stripped down to their rigger boots and boxers, resulting in
a number of accidents from surprised drivers with only (at
the time) a row of cones between them and the rest of the
motorway. Always makes me smile when I remember and
something never to be seen again (thank god), as I don’t think
M&S underpants would be seen as appropriate PPE these days.
Q: If you could change one thing about the industry
what would it be?
Collaboration has always been central to the construction
industry, but to me it is becoming even more noticeable and
common. This extends beyond collaboration between similar
organisations in the industry, but also to those – potentially
from completely different industries – who share a similar
problem (or one with a problem and the other with the
solution). Whilst to my mind, this can only be a good thing,
it’s vital that we develop and maintain governance models
to ensure stakeholders can have confidence in what is being
achieved, in a way that is not anti-competitive. This leads
to interesting discussions around how legislation, such as
competition laws, originally put in place to protect companies,
do not become barriers.
Martin’s pictured below, far left
Q: What do you enjoy most about your profession?
This is perhaps the easiest of all the questions to answer, the
industry in which we work is only as good as the people within
it. Like us all I have been fortunate to meet some great people
over the years. I guess that the challenge that we face is how
we make our industry the place which attracts and keeps the
new talent for the future. Ensuring graduates from colleges
and universities recognise it to be an industry in which they
want to create meaningful careers. Our industry doesn’t
always have the best of images, which may be historic, so we
need to get those looking to our industries to view it with a
fresh pair of eyes. As well as ensuring we innovate and drive
new business models and ways of working, which people are
excited to be part of.
Q: Where would you like to be right now?
On a surf board, surrounded by friends, with the setting sun
shining through the waves, mixing the blue of the waves with
the warm red of the setting sun.
