@ODonovanWaste WINTER 2017/18
Welcome from
Jacqueline O’Donovan
There are plans in place to eliminate avoidable
waste both in the UK and throughout the
European Union, but it will be years before any
bans or restrictions are fully effective. So for the
time being Britain (and the rest of the world) will
have inordinate amounts of recylable waste, with
nowhere for it to go. I don’t believe Government
has given this sufficient consideration and it’s a
concern.
I recently commented in the New York Times on
China’s announcement that it wasn’t going to be
the ‘world’s garbage dump’ any longer, with a ban
on accepting recyclables coming into force on 1st
January. Previously China recycled around half of
the world’s plastic and paper - 7.3 million tonnes
in 2016 according to industry reports - which
was used as raw materials to help power China’s
export-driven manufacturing.
The Chinese market is so large that it cannot be
easily replaced by other countries or solutions
and since the ban came into force, the UK
market has changed and I’d expect there to be
bottlenecks of waste across the UK in the coming
months.
At the time of writing we were still waiting to
hear the full outcome of the Mayor’s Direct Vision
Standard - Transport for London’s consultation
phase 2 closed at the end of January, which has
proposed a safety standard permit scheme, in
response to phase 1 of the consultation. This
approach will still see HGVs receiving a star
rating, but rather than a blanket ban, operators
will be given the opportunity to demonstrate
compliance through safe system measures, such
as vehicle safety equipment and driver training
programmes.
There will be another phase to the consultation
in the Summer of 2018 where we will obtain the
final scheme proposals.
Finally we were really pleased to have been
invited to take part in the 2017 Parliamentary
Review, sharing our views on our industry - more
on this is on page 6.
Setting new standards of compliance
At the end of 2017 we became the first waste management company
in the UK to employ Labyrinth Logistics’ SilkThread software, an online
compliance tool designed to help manage O Licence compliance.
Offered as a cloud-based solution, SilkThread enables our managers to
access checks and information from one central location, ensuring our
records are kept up-to-date. We’ve also opted to include the Health &
Safety module - another industry first, as a natural choice in helping
us continue our outstanding record for health and safety, training and
environmental excellence. This module provides us with the ability to
self-audit and helps ensure there are no gaps in our health and safety
systems.
With five depots, 160 members of staff and a fleet of 90 HGVs
maintaining a comprehensive view of our operation is vital. Using SilkThread enables our managers to access checks
and information from one central location, ensuring all records are kept up-to-date. O’Donovan Operations Officer Lee
Hayhow said “Keeping abreast of ever-increasing legislation can be a full time job in itself and this software simplifies
a system which could otherwise be daunting. We pride ourselves on our professionalism and exacting standards in all
areas of the business. By using SilkThread we are able to consistently achieve these standards and it will help us look
for new ways to raise the benchmark.”
“Labyrinth is delighted that O’Donovan has made such a great start with
the SilkThread® O Licence and Health & Safety modules. O’Donovan is
an acknowledged industry leader in transport compliance across the
challenging London construction sector and adding a self-audit dimension
will only add to their existing high standing. Like Labyrinth, O’Donovan
has won a number of awards for its pioneering approach and we feel that
this is a significant and hugely beneficial partnership for both companies.”
Ruth Waring, MD Labyrinth
Jacqueline speaks at European Transport Safety Council seminar
In October Jacqueline was invited to join a prestigious line-up of speakers at the
European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) seminar in Madrid.
As winners of the 2016 the ETSC Praise award in 2016 we were asked to join the
2017 seminar which looked at work-related road safety and focussed on success
stories in relation to fleet and road-related risk management.
We pride ourselves on our standards for road safety and have a shared vision with
all our staff to continue to improve the face of the waste industry, so to be invited
to contribute at a European level was a great achievement for O’Donovan.
ETSC’s Praise project addresses the safety of driving for work and promotes best
practice to help employers secure high road safety standards. Find out more by
Effective driver
management
With the UK freight industry having a shortfall of almost
35,000 drivers, FORS Professional has released a new
guide - Effective Driver Management - an Industry
Code Of Practice (ICOP). The guide aims to assist FORS
members with improved HGV driver management -
highlighting the importance of investing in drivers. All
HGV drivers should be managed effectively to ensure
retention and productivity to help enhance the image of
the freight industry as a whole. The guide includes:
• Top tips for managing drivers
• Sourcing candidates
• Retaining, engaging and managing drivers
• Training
• Performance management and driver development
• Health, safety and well-being
London Build Show
In October we took to the road to exhibit at London’s
leading construction and design show - London Build.
We joined over 250 exhibitors to showcase our awardwinning
business and comprehensive services to more
than 17000 visitors over the two days.
It was a great opportunity to meet attendees involved in
construction, architecture, infrastructure and design in
both London and across the whole of the UK.
Whilst we were at London Build we also ran a business
card drop raffle on our stand, giving our lucky winners
the chance to have a behind the scenes tour of ITV’s
Good Morning Britain. The winners went to the ITV
studios in early December and watched the programme
go out live from the control room before heading into the
studio to meet the presenters!
With driver shortage being a significant issue in our
industry, we were pleased to have joined a number of
other FORS members by providing a case study for this
new guide. We’ve shared our experience of investing in
and providing our drivers with a comprehensive ongoing
training programme; alongside demonstrating the
benefits of ensuring our drivers have the best possible
vehicles available.
downloaded from the FORS website: fors-online.org.uk
Making darker evenings safer
This winter we’ve continued continued our ongoing
partnership with officers from the Metropolitan Police Cycle
Safety team by supporting their latest initiative - Operation
Safeway, with reflective wristbands for cyclists. Our
drivers were also given detailed briefings on the need for
heightened awareness in the darker evenings.
>4
Operation Safeway was developed in response to an
increase in fatal collisions involving vulnerable road users
as the days become shorter. Research has shown that there
is a 10% increase in serious collisions and road fatalities
in the first four weeks after the clocks go back. There are
several reasons for this, but the simplest is that road users
are harder to spot.
Largest direct vision,
low-entry fleet
As the first company in the UK to buy the groundbreaking
Mercedes Benz Econic, we’ve recently taken
delivery of the latest new additions to our fleet, making
ours the largest fleet of direct vision skip loaders in the
UK!
In addition to the unrivalled safety features offered by
the Econic, we also add a number of additional safety
equipment to the vehicles, including CCTV and left hand
turn audible alarms.
“Our safety strategy and determination has
been to take resolute steps and lead the
cultural change to reduce the road danger
posed by construction industry vehicles, as a
progressive company, we are keen to ensure
we are making the best choices to help
further protect vulnerable road users.
We continue to make significant ongoing
investments in our fleet and drivers to
ensure that our commitment to road safety
and direct vision is an integral part of our
policy and reinforces our pledge to improve
road safety for all. As more and more
large infrastructure projects like HS2 and
Thames Tideway come on-line, the need
for contractors to have the safest vehicles
operating on their sites is paramount and
this is the ambition we aspire to.”
Road Safety Week
Road Safety Week is Brake’s flagship event to promote
safer road use. The 2017 event took place at the end of
November with the theme of Speed Down Save Lives
- speeding is still a major problem in the UK. Hundreds
of employers use Road Safety Week to train staff, raise
awareness and partner with local communities.
Every year O’Donovan gets involved and 2017 was
no exception: we visited primary schools across
north London as part of the Met Police’s Exchanging
Places scheme, helping
to educate children on
road safety issues. Also
everyone at our HQ
got involved in Brake’s
#Bright Day helping
to raise money for the
charity by wearing their
brightest clothes to work,
helping to remind drivers
to look out for vulnerable
road users.
WINTER 2017/18
Parliamentary Review
We were delighted to have been invited to feature alongside a
number of outstanding organisations in the 2017 Parliamentary
Review. A key fixture in the political calendar, the Review looks
back on a year that Theresa May referred to as a ‘significant year
in British politics’ and showcases best practice as a learning tool
for the public and private sector.
Covering all policy areas the annual Parliamentary Review is
sent to more than half a million leading policy makers and its
contents act as both a blueprint for success and template for
reform.
To read The Parliamentary Review in full visit: theparliamentaryreview.co.uk
“O’Donovan Waste Disposal and other hardworking organisations from across the country
have come together to make this year’s Review possible. Sharing knowledge and insight with
both peers and government is essential work and I am delighted that this year’s Review will
reach every corner of the British economy. It’s always a real joy to hear from policymakers
who tell me that something they have read in the Review has had an effect on their thinking.
It is my belief that innovation is contagious, if only it is given the platform to spread. Is it
the Review’s purpose to provide this platform and I am confident we are fulfilling it.”
Daniel Yossman, Director, The Parliamentary Review
Contributing to member learning
At the end of 2017 Jacqueline was awarded the
Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM)
Ben Heath Certificate for Outstanding Presentations.
The certificate, named in honour of past CIWM
member Ben Heath, was given in appreciation of
a presentation Jacqueline made to CIWM members
earlier this year as part of their ‘Danger – Waste at
Work’ conference.
“Jacqueline provided an extremely
innovative and thought-provoking insight
into Health & Safety from the perspective
of an operating company in the waste and
recycling industry at our open meeting
in London earlier this year. The London &
Southern Counties Centre of the CIWM is
delighted that she has been recognised for
her contribution with the prestigious Ben
Heath Certificate.”
Mike Bland, Honorary Secretary, CIWM
Irish Presidential honour
In recognition of
her continuous
support for the
Irish community
abroad, Jacqueline
was awarded
the Presidential
Distinguished
Service Award by
Irish President
Michael D Higgins.
Receiving the
award, Jacqueline said: “It is an honour and a privilege
to be recognised in this way. I’m delighted to join such
a prestigious group of individuals who are proud to
support their fellow Irish men and women abroad.”
The Awards, established in 2011, recognise the
contribution of members of the Irish community abroad.
Other recipients included Liam Neeson, Bernard
Canavan, Denis Mulcahy and Mary T. Murphy.
Inside Out:
Kevin Richardson, CILT
A life-long logistician, Kevin joined The Chartered Institute of
Logistics and Transport (CILT) as Chief Executive in December 2015.
Previously Kevin worked for XPO Logistics for four years and prior
to that spent 20 years at TDG Plc. Kevin’s a long-term member of
the CILT and is commited to raising the profile of the logistics and
transport industry, as well as moving the Institute forward through
growth and development.
Q: Which aspect of the logistics transport world has
most influenced you in recent years?
The transition from distribution through logistics and into
integrated supply chain activities, coupled with the changes
in consumer behaviour has been fascinating and has changed
and broadened my ways of thinking. The manner in which
the profession has responded to these challenges has been
fantastic but unfortunately is seldom recognised.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your profession?
Having worked in logistics for over 38 years the pace of change
has been significant and increasing particularly over recent
years. I have been fortunate to have worked in manufacturing,
for small and major logistics service providers and across many
countries, and the challenges and variety have always provided
new opportunities which have been exciting - if at times very
demanding!
Q: What single thing would improve the quality of your
life?
An ability to prioritise better and work out which things to stop
doing to create more thinking time.
Q: What will you be spending more on in 2018?
Developing and equipping the CILT to face the next 100 years –
our centenary is in 2019.
Q: And what will you be spending less on?
Hopefully less administration and non-value add activities.
Q: What’s been your greatest business challenge?
I spent a number of years in implementation and strategic
development roles which generated intense periods of activity
and rapid change. Balancing that off against routine tasks and
long-term change initiatives has never been easy. Being asked
to turn around failing operations and then manage them for a
longer period has always been a challenge.
Q: Where would you like to be right now?
Apart from being on top of all my tasks and having delivered all
long-term objectives I wouldn’t mind being somewhere warm
and relaxing, but with lots to do as well. One of the Ionian
Islands would be nice.
Q: Is there one thing you avoid doing at all costs?
Retrospective thinking. Time taken doing things has its place
but it’s about where you are going, rather than dwelling in the
past.
Q: What keeps you awake at night?
Very little fortunately, although when I do wake I generally
think of something I should have done and have to get up
to write it down. My wife finds my sleeping annoying when
accompanied by snoring; then me waking and stumbling
around to find pen and paper is equally disturbing!
Q: What’s the most fun you’ve had at work?
Setting up businesses and operations in new geographies
ranging from Eastern Europe to Brazil has been exciting
and has given me the opportunity to work with some great
and very humorous colleagues. Setting up TDG in Spain in
the mid 1990’s was a great example with a good mix of hard
work and great laughs especially when dealing with property
construction challenges and contractors!
Q: What will we be talking about in our industry in 12
months’ time?
Brexit will no doubt remain high on the agenda. I also hope
people will also be taking more about the value and personal
development that Institute membership provides; particularly
about Th!nk Logistics, which we are launching together with
Novus, FTA and Abbey Logistics, which is focussed on raising
the profile of the profession and attracting and developing
talent.
Q: Most embarrassing moment at work?
Either pressing send on emails when I didn’t mean it to go
to the recipient then discovering recall doesn’t really work;
or standing up to present and not realising the slides are on
automatic transition timings and an older version.
Q: If you could change one thing about the industry
what would it be?
This is a good industry but an even greater profession. It would
be ideal if Government, the public, education bodies and
society in general recognised the contribution the profession
makes to their lives, the economy, the environment and
business profitability and that people would consider the
profession as a career of choice, rather than something many
fall in to.
Q: What’s your biggest vice?
Unwinding on Friday evenings with a whisky. One is never
enough!
Call for organ donation
At the end of 2017 we joined the campaign to encourage people
to join the NHS organ donor register - a cause close to our hearts
as one of our employees, Lee Hayhow’s baby daughter was the
recipient of a donor liver at just six
months old.
Three years on and Lee’s daughter
Amy is doing amazingly well and her
parents are keen to raise awareness
of the ongoing need for organ
donors. In September 2017 Amy
started nursery and her bravery is
an inspiration to us all. We took the
opportunity to promote awareness
and also raise much needed funds
for two amazing charities - Child
Liver Disease and the Ronald McDonald House charity which helped the Hayhow family
during Amy’s time in hospital.
To join the NHS organ donation visit: organdonation.nhs.uk
Supporting the Stroke Association
The team donned their Christmas jumpers in the
office the week before Christmas and donated
money to the Stroke Association - the UK’s leading
charity dedicated to conquering strokes.
We’re proud to have sponsored a local under 10s
