MY HOBBY IS....
CAKE MAKING
In our regular feature we hear about a favourite
about cake making and decorating.
"I'd always enjoyed making cakes and my
favourite part of going grocery shopping when I
was young, was getting to choose one of the
cupcake mixes with the cartoon picture discs on
the top!
When I was 14 I started doing my Duke of
Edinburgh's award and I chose cake making as
one of the sections. I found a local cake shop that
was running a 12 week course in making and
decorating cakes and even though I was the
youngest in the class, I really enjoyed learning
about icing cakes.
I decided to learn more about the subject and as
part of my college studies, I enrolled on a City and
Guilds Patisserie Course. It was really hard work
but I learned so many tips and techniques.
I thought about going into catering as a job but I
wasn't sure it was something I wanted to do as a
job - it was more as a hobby for me.
Over the last eight years I've always kept baking
and I've supported fundraising for a local children's
hospice with bake sales. I've raised over £5000
selling cakes at local events.
I really enjoy cake making at home and even
though I don't bake as much as I used to, I still get
calls from my family and friends to make them a
birthday cake!"
