315-445-2360 | www.jccsyr.org PJ Library in CNY happenings PJ families and the JCC’s Columbus Day school-age vacation campers met up on Oct. 8 at the East Syracuse Home Depot for a special event. Children built their very own set of wooden book ends. This is the second year PJ Library has collaborated with Home Depot to create a special holiday related project for kids to build themselves. Using wood, hammers and nails everyone built a set of book ends which they could decorate and use to hold their collection of PJ Library books at home. Kids love using ‘grown up’ tools to create something useful, and they were excited to build something from scratch and feel proud of their creations. Over the month of October, we asked families to bring in extra PJ books to donate to help North Carolina families and Jewish institutions rebuild their PJ Library collections in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. In times when families have lost so much, the comfort of being able to read a beloved book with your children is such a comfort. As a community we sent 70 books to North Carolina and have collected many more books to be used for future donations of this nature. We are always accepting donations of PJ Library books and appreciate your help very much. Save the Dates! On Sunday, Dec. 2 from 12:30-3 p.m., join PJ Library to welcome in Chanukah with a fabulous free community party at the JCC. There will be music, dreidel, Helping east-area seniors live independently The JCC’s Neighborhood Advisor Sharon Kieffer. Do you or someone you know need help with Social Security benefits, SNAP (food stamps), Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) benefits, transportation or other services? The JCC’s Neighborhood Advisor can help. On Monday, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m., join us as we conclude Chanukah with a special live concert performance at the JCC by PJ Library musician, Jason Mesches. This will be a free interactive concert geared towards young children and families that you won’t want to miss! Jason is coming all the way from the West Coast to join us and his music will be featured on PJ Library CDs that some PJ families will receive in December. You can also listen to Jason’s music anytime by downloading the PJ Library radio app! On Monday, Jan. 21 from 10:30 a.m.– noon PJ Our Way will hold a special book club program for Tu B’shevat at the Destiny USA Apple Store. This event is geared towards 8-11 year olds. We will be reading a short story together and then using technology to create our very own story. This event is free and registration is required. The Neighborhood Advisor program is part of the Onondaga County Department of Adult & Long Term Care Services. PJ Library® (PJ for pajamas) is a nationally acclaimed literacy program started by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation that gives free Jewish bedtime stories, CDs and DVDs to families raising Jewish children. The PJ Library CNY chapter is a program of the JCC of Syracuse and supported by the Pomeranz, Shankman and Martin Charitable Foundation, Jewish Federation of Central New York, Congregation Beth Sholom-Chevra Shas, Shaarei Torah Orthodox Congregation of Syracuse, Syracuse Hebrew Day School, Temple Adath Yeshurun and Temple Concord. The PJ Library in CNY serves children from 6 months to 8-years old in Cortland, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego Counties.
