The Secretary’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to Woodstock.
Our visitors are Three Bridges. Welcome
to their Players, Officials and Supporters. A welcome
also to the match officials.
Three Bridges have not played since 6 th November
when they played Shoreham in the
Sussex County Cup and won 1-0. Previous to
that they played Hastings United and lost 2-1,
and Hythe Town at home, losing 3-2. Both narrow
losses against good teams This shows that
today is going to be a stiff test for our team that
has also lost narrowly to some good teams lately.
I do not include Whitstable Town in that. We
just played badly in that game, a game we are
disappointed to not win. Whitstable are no
Hythe Town, the team we played a week earlier.
We matched Hythe all the way in that game
and only two poor judgement errors prevented
us getting something out of the game. The
Whitstable match was memorable only for the
poor discipline. This disrupted the flow of the
game. It was a shame that our players were
drawn into this. We need a better and more disciplined
performance from the Brickies today if
we hope to get anything out of the game.
Church festival dates are Thursday 6 th December
to Sunday 9 th December .Please go and
visit these churches to see the festivals. It is really
a great effort by local community groups.
The Tunstall festival has featured on BBC 1
South East Today programme for the past two
years.
One good thing about last Saturday was the observance
of Remembrance. Thanks to the local
British Legion and in particular the standard
bearer, Jim Pledger and “our own” Derek
Wakeling. Derek laid our wreath at the war me
Christmas is not far away and we have been
invited by St Michaels Church, High Street, Sittingbourne
and St John The Baptist Church,
Tunstall, to provide trees for their Christmas
Tree festivals – something we are pleased to do
every year. The festival at St Michaels Church
runs from Thursday 29th November 2018 to
Saturday 1st December 2018 and The Tunstall
Our Poppy Wreath
morial on our behalf at the Remembrance Day
service last Sunday
The funeral of our late President, Alan Crowshaw,
will take place at The Garden Of England
Crematorium next Thursday (22 nd November) at
1:00pm. His family have stated that only family
flowers, although they are inviting donations to
Cancer Research.
Next Saturday we travel to East Grinstead
Town. We are next home on Saturday 1 st December
when we play in form VCD Athletic.
JOHN

Hi Everyone.
From the Programme Editor
I hope that you enjoyed last weeks programme
which focused on remembrance. This weeks
programme focuses on nostalgia which was
brought
about by my
obtaining a
few programmes
from the
90’s. I do
have a lot of
programmes
from that
era in my
loft but
these were
some that I
didn’t possess.
Have
a look at the
map that
showed just
how far we
travelled in
those days.
I did enjoy
the trips
though,
even if it
meant being
away for a
whole day.
I’ve still kept a lot of the coach bookings that I
used to make for the club back then . (I am definitely
a hoarder) and note that most coaches
had to leave between 9.00 and 10.00am .
I well remember the quiz and the raffle, and the
home made cakes that were part and parcel of
the journey, not to mention the beer that was a
must have cargo—strictly forbidden these days
on football coaches.
I don’t believe we could survive financially now
if we had those journeys again, as the cost of
coaches would be just too exorbitant. Of
course it all depends on the size of crowds that
we get, and it was great to see almost 200
here last week.
Speaking of our Southern League days its interesting
to see how the clubs in that league
have got on, so I have included an article of
“where are they now?” It’s a fascinating insight
into how the fortunes of non league clubs ebb
and flow over a period , which on this occasion
is 24 years. I found that 1 club has completely
gone, that was Rushden & Diamonds. 3 further
clubs were liquidated but have reformed, 2
clubs have merged due to financial difficulties,
4 clubs have changed their names, 3 clubs are
now in the football league, 2 clubs are in the
non league pyramid step 1, whilst 2 are in step
2, 4 in step 3, 9 (including ourselves) are in
step 4, 3 in step 5 and 1 in step 6. The totals
come to more than 22 in the league because
some liquidated clubs reformed.
Finally the FA Cup continues and slowly the
non-league clubs are falling by the wayside. I
watched the Hampton & Richmond game
against Oldham Athletic as I have fond memories
of supporting the Middlesex side, (then just
called Hampton,) for many years from about
the age of 12 to 20+ and I took my referees
course and exam at their ground the Beveree.
It doesn’t seem to have changed much! They
lost 2-1 but It was a brave attempt by the
“Beavers”. Amazing that a game like that was
beamed to Slovenia, Denmark, Croatia, Serbia
and Slovakia! The FA Cup still has a “kind of
magic”!
So you think we have to travel!
I know that some of our supporters have been with us for many years, but those who have only
known us in the various guises of the Isthmian league may be surprised at just how far we had
to travel for some of our Southern League matches. I found this map in a Crawley Town v Sittingbourne
programme for a Dr Martes Cup game played on 18th October 1994, which
strangely enough I remember, that shows our away league venues in those days. Take a look
at where they are now later on in this programme.
Three Bridges — A Brief History
Founded in 1901, Three Bridges joined the Mid Sussex
Football League in 1902 and were Champions
of that League for the first time in the 1907/08 season.
Their first major success came in 1933/34,
when they won the Sussex Junior Cup, and sundry
other minor honours came their way before they
joined the Sussex County Football League in
1952/53, and two years later were crowned Second
Division Champions.
In 1962/63 they won the Division Two Invitation Cup
and in 1968/69, 1973/74 and 1979/80 were Second
Division Runners Up. 1970/71 produced an
against‐the‐odds triumph when winning the
League’s Invitation Cup against Southwick (3-2).
The 1980’s heralded a run of successes, starting
with reaching the last 16 of the FA Vase for the first
time in 1981/82 before losing at Molesey (1-2). A
season later they made it to the last 32 but also won
the Sussex RUR Charity Cup for the first time, beating
Hastings Town 3-2. Another year on saw them
finish runners up in the Thorn EMI National six-aside
tournament, winning a set of floodlights.
1985/86 saw them finish as County League Division
One runners up, a feat they repeated in both
1987/88 (when they also won the RUR Cup again)
and 1988/89.
A fire destroyed their clubhouse in 1993 which refocused
their priorities and ultimately resulted in relegation
in 1996/97. They won the Division 2 League
Cup a season later and then finished runners up in
Division 2 to regain Division 1 status. They were
RUR Cup runners up in 2003/04 and then winners of
that same prestigious trophy in 2007/08.
In season 2010/11 hopes were high when they started
by winning their first nine League games, but
eventually finished the season in 5th place. However
they did win the John O’Hara League Challenge
Cup for the first time that season, beating Rye United
2-1, a tremendous feat that they achieved again
in 2011/12, this time AFC Uckfield being defeated 2-
1. It looked like being another tough League campaign
when they lost four of the first nine matches,
but then lost only one of the remaining 29 games,
which was concluded by beating Championship rivals
Rye United 1-0 at home on the final day of the
season! This tremendous run meant the club had
achieved its ambition and become Sussex County
Football League Champions. With a superb run in
the FA Vase too, losing in the last 32 on a penalty
shoot‐out with Derbyshire side, Gresley FC, the
2011/12 ‘Double’ season had undoubtedly been the
best in Three Bridges’ history.
Their first season in the Ryman Isthmian Football
League South Division saw them struggle for much
of the time. However, having been 10 points adrift
at the bottom of the table in mid‐February, they
went on a run of 11 matches that produced 7 victories,
2 draws and just 2 defeats, earning them Team
of the Month Awards in both March and April as a
result. It meant that they survived the drop, but their
second season in the Ryman League saw them
struggle at times again but some key signings midway
through the season helped them to 19th place.
The 2014/15 season saw an even greater improvement
with a healthy mixture of youth and experience
guiding them into 7th position and, whilst they were
happy to score 94 League goals, they were less
than happy about the 95 they conceded! They improved
their defensive record in conceding 67 goals
in season 2015/16 but only scored 59, hardly helped
by long-term injuries to strike partners Allan Tait and
Tony Garrod. With 66 points, they slumped to 14th
position, although they only accumulated 6 points
fewer than in the previous campaign!
Bridges maintained most of that season's squad for
the 2016/17 campaign. However, with at least 11
first team players out injured by September, they
had to use a lot of the U21s, Academy and U18s
players and by November had lost 12 games in a
row, drew three and won just one game. Towards
the end of the season, they strengthened the squad
but it was too late to avoid relegation.
For the 2017/18 season, Bridges kept a few of the
best of the players from the current season and
strengthened the team with more experienced players
in the hope of promotion once again. Having
dispensed with the services of Simon Wormull, Paul
Hammond and Danny Lee from the coaching team
and folding the Academy team, Bridges also
strengthened the management team with the additions
of the experienced ex-Bridges player, Martin
Dynan as Assistant Manager, and UEFA ‘A’ licensed
Coach, Marc Wardley. That season turned out to be
an extremely tough one with every team wanting to
beat us. However, Bridges accomplished what they
set out to do by gaining promotion back to the Bostik
League having finished second place in the Southern
Combination League Premier Division, just one
point behind the winners, Haywards Heath Town,
and despite having only lost 3 games all season.
The 2018/19 season sees Martin Dynan take over
the reins as First Team Manager and he has appointed
Liam Collins as joint-Assistant Manager/
Player, alongside Keith George. Paul Faili stood
down as First Team Manager at the end of last season
after 25 years in the Club’s management set up
and will now continue to solely concentrate on his
role as Club Chairman. Martin Dynan has also recruited
a new U23s manager in Oliver Saunders,
another UEFA ‘A’ licensed coach, to work closely
with the First Team in developing both the U23s and
U18s.

It is now almost three years to the day since, on a cold and wet Saturday afternoon at Leicester
City’s King Power Stadium, Jamie Vardy latched onto a Christian Fuchs through-ball before
slotting a powerful low drive past Manchester United’s David de Gea. The significance of
the goal, which saw Vardy break Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in ten consecutive
Premier League matches, was clear evidence of a footballer at the height of his powers.
Vardy’s rise from such humble Non-League beginnings to the bright lights of the Premier
League has been well documented. From Stocksbridge Park Steels, via FC Halifax and Fleetwood
Town - England recognition would follow off the back of his blazing run with Leicester
City. Here was the ‘poster boy’ for what Non-League football could deliver. So much so, in
fact, that scouts up and down the country are now looking for that next gem; a player with a
price tag that wouldn’t even be picked up on most Premier League clubs’ balance sheets.
But while the new wave of Non-League stars continue to take their places in the higher
leagues and beyond – former Kettering striker Calum Wilson’s call-up to the England squad
being the latest example of such – the lack of managers being given their chance remains a
cause of major frustration.
Scratch the surface and you can see some reasoning: if a club purchases a player for such a
nominal fee - even the £1 million Leicester City paid Fleetwood Town for Vardy’s services in
2012 - there is so much to gain and so little to lose. But taking a manager from the lower
leagues, who is expected to make a team gel and manage players’ egos, well that’s a different
challenge. And, where such appointments are concerned, chairmen and board members
don’t want any egg on their faces.
That said, if Football League clubs could have a window into the work and lives of many Non-
League managers, they would see so many astute footballing brains that are complemented
with the key ingredient needed for success: hard work. Yet still our managers are being ignored,
and if they are given a chance, it is invariably with a club that is swimming against the
tide.
Paul Hurst’s recent ill-fated stint at Ipswich is a case in point. Despite a playing career where
he chalked up to close to 500 games in the Football League with Rotherham United, Hurst cut
his teeth in management in the lower leagues, working alongside Rob Scott at Ilkeston, Boston
and Grimsby before taking the job with the Mariners on a full-time basis. He then moved
to Shrewsbury before Ipswich came calling last May.
With one of the lowest budgets in the Championship in a division that has become, pound for
pound, arguably the toughest in Europe, the task at Portman Road was never going to be an
easy one. It proved beyond Hurst, and now instead of celebrating the talents of a man who
has gone from the Conference to the Championship in the space of two years, we are left
scratching our heads as to when the next bright light from Non-League will be given the
chance to shine.
Managers deserve greater support and patience to progress their careers. Non-League football
has been recognised as the perfect breeding ground for players who develop the right
attitudes for the task ahead, but those players are learning from some of the game’s most aspiring
young managers. Like Vardy, there are some golden nuggets out there…
Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 3rd November 2018
Bostik South East
Hythe Town 3 Sittingbourne 2, Att 252
It was fitting that the day after the death of muchrespected
Sittingbourne FC club president Alan
Crowshaw that the players should produce a display
packed with character and bravery.
Ultimately they didn’t have anything to show for it,
but how well Sittingbourne did to come back from
two-down early on and go close to causing a major
upset.
Hythe haven’t lost a home league match this season
and the three points they got from this win
took them back up to third in the Bostik South
East League.
So it was doubly disappointing for Sittingbourne
to get within a mistake or two of spoiling their day,
and end up falling into the bottom half of the table
for the first time this season.
The match was preceded by a minute’s silence in
honour of Mr Crowshaw and a Sittingbourne team
unchanged from the midweek defeat at Folkestone
in the Velocity Trophy kicked off in pleasant
autumn sunshine.
In fact, it was from the kick-off that Hythe scored,
Sittingbourne losing possession on the edge of
the home side’s penalty area. The ball was
whisked forward into the inside-right channel on
the counter-attack and the speedy Aikhionbare
raced clear of the central defence before lashing
a superb shot high inside the near post.
Just seconds into the game and a hammer blow
for Sittingbourne, Hythe following it with more
dangerous attacks in the opening few minutes
and almost adding an immediate second.
It took patience and strength of mind for Sittingbourne
to edge their way back into the game
after such a shocking start, but they seemed to
be settling into it despite giving the ball away too
much after building good positions.
Then came another shocker. A long clearance by
Hythe keeper Roberts deep into the Sittingbourne
half in the 29th minute saw goalkeeper Patrick
Lee race out of his area to kick the ball away.
Whether the low sun temporarily blinded him, or
whether the ball bounced strangely, but Lee totally
missed his kick and Aikhionbare simply had to
run on behind him and place the ball in the empty
net.
Who would have thought at this moment that Sittingbourne
would go into half-time on level terms,
but somehow they managed it, battling back with
courage and conviction.
After unleashing one long-range shot that keeper
Nicholls saved at the second attempt, Dan Parkinson
blasted in a free-kick from 25 yards that
wrong-footed the keeper, admittedly with the help
of a big deflection on the way through.
And two minutes later, with just 40 minutes
played, Sittingbourne were level as Tommy Fagg
threaded a clever pass through for Tom Loynes.
Running at full pelt, his first touch seemed slightly
too heavy but with a defender and the keeper
closing him down from different directions,
Loynes stretched to get there first and place the
ball in the far corner. That makes Loynes the
team’s leading scorer now this season.
Driven on with the help of tremendous backing
from their ever-noisy ever-singing fans, Sittingbourne
looked the more dangerous side for
quite a time in the second half, Parkinson having
a free-kick in a promising position blocked by the
wall and Ira Jackson seeing his shot tipped over
the bar by the keeper.
Hythe were probably just getting back into the
game a bit when they scored the 74th minute winner
thanks to a mixture of luck and skill. Lee was
once again out of his area to half-clear the ball
but it fell to midfielder Kinnear, who from fully 30
yards immediately lobbed it straight back in as
Lee tried in vain to race back to his line.
For poor old Lee it completed a day he’ll want to
forget but he’s such an enthusiastic and positive
influence on the team he’s easy to forgive when
things don’t work out for him.
Again, Sittingbourne responded well and sub Gil
Carvalho, making what seemed a welcome return
to the club, went so close to an equaliser with a
shot the Hythe keeper just managed to turn away
with a fine save.
With four minutes left, though, Carvalho blotted
his copybook with a reckless tackle which the referee
deemed worthy of a straight red card.
So five goals, a sending off, a spirited fightback.
An enjoyable game all round. Quite an afternoon
down in South Kent – but a draw would surely
have been a fairer result!
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Chris Webber, Reiss
Crimmen (Yellow card), Dan Parkinson, Ben
Fitchett, Joe Denny, Tommie Fagg (Gil Carvalho,
63 min, Red card), Lewis Chambers, Ira Jackson,
Bola Dawodu (Yellow card), Tom Loynes (David
Latunde, 82 min). Subs not used: Josh Dorling,
Harrison Hatfull, Shea Pritchard.

Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 10th November 2018
Bostik South East
Sittingbourne 1 Whitstable Town 2,
Att 198
On a lovely autumn afternoon, Sittingbourne
attracted their biggest home crowd of the season
for a league game but most will have left
disappointed as the run of games without a win
stretched to six.
How long ago it seems now that they were up
in second place in the Bostik South East
League and looking for all the world like playoff
contenders.
It’s virtually the same set of players, but
they’ve lost their way a bit and Whitstable did
enough to deserve to win this Kent derby.
To crown a bad day, Sittingbourne had a player
red-carded for the second successive week,
and four players sent off in just a couple of
months this season is not a record to be proud
of.
Manager Aslan Odev made some brave decisions
for this match, leaving out two players -
goalkeeper Pat Lee and Bola Dawodu - who
have been first choices all season. In came a
new keeper, former Crystal Palace academy
player Matthew Funnell, and player-coach Nathan
Elder was recalled upfront. The other
change saw Lex Allan back after two games
out injured, replacing Joe Denny.
The first half-hour went badly for Sittingbourne.
They conceded a lot of free-kicks as well as
more than a few corners, with Whitstable dominating
the game. And it was no surprise when
they took a 29th minute lead, West heading
home from yet another set piece swung in by
former Sittingbourne left-back Chris Elliott.
Sittingbourne responded well and the rest of
the half was their best period of the game.
Both Tom Loynes and Tommie Fagg had powerful
shots saved by keeper Eason and Fagg
had a header cleared off the line by Gillman
after timing his jump beautifully to beat the advancing
keeper.
And it was the hard-working Fagg who singlehandedly
created the equaliser, driving past
three defenders with a mixture of skill and determination
before spotting Ira Jackson in
space on the right side of the penalty area.
Getting Jackson in one-on-one situations is a
key Sittingbourne manouevre and he made no
mistake, setting himself up before driving his
first goal since August into the far corner.
The second half began quietly until a 58th minute
foul by Whitstable captain Morrish clearly
hurt Sittingbourne’s Dan Parkinson. Words
were exchanged in the aftermath and suddenly
players were piling into a pushing-and-shoving
melee. Most were acting as peacemakers and
it didn’t last long but Morrish and Parkinson
were both given red cards for their part in it all.
Whitstable went on to create a 71st minute
winner when Wright finished a skilful passing
move in the area to slot home. Sittingbourne
defenders, presumably apprehensive about
diving in and giving away a penalty, stood off
just too much as the move built up and couldn’t
do enough to prevent it.
Sittingbourne tried to get back into the game
but Elder missed a good chance in front of
goal and substitute Dawodu headed just over
in added time, while at the other end Whitstable’s
Smith hit the post.
Football wise it was an afternoon to forget, especially
following the dignified and moving start
it was given by the pre-match remembrance
commemorations.
Sittingbourne: Matthew Funnell, Chris Webber,
Reiss Crimmen (Yellow card), Dan Parkinson
(Red card), Ben Fitchett (Yellow card)
(Johan Caney-Bryan, 87 min), Lex Allan, Ira
Jackson, Lewis Chambers, Nathan Elder (Bola
Dawodu, 76 min), Tommie Fagg, Tom Loynes.
Subs not used: Josh Dorling, Harrison Hatfull,
Patrick Lee.
