DEAR VERNON HILLS RESIDENTS,
1
It’s the time of year for making New Year’s Resolutions. Whether yours is to explore the outdoors, commit to get fit, or investigate a new
hobby, the Park District is your place to make it happen in 2019!
Have you visited our new and improved website? It follows the District’s branding principles as well as improved functionality. Be sure to
sign-up for our Park Paths e-newsletter on the home page. District news will be delivered to your inbox on a monthly basis. We are also
excited to announce that program registration is now available on your cell phone and tablet!
Have you visited Lakeview Fitness? This is a great place to start those resolutions. I invite you to spend a day at the facility, swim and
splash in the pool, warm up from the winter’s chill in the sauna, steam room, or hot tub, or take a fitness class. High school and college
students can take advantage of a special student rate – just $30 for 30 days of membership during their winter break. New in 2019 is the
Summer Slim Down – a 6-month membership beginning in January. Visit pages 32-33 for more information on these promotions.
Don’t let the winter weather keep your family indoors. The ice rinks and sled hill will be lit daily until 9 pm for evening fun! The pavilion’s
restrooms are open daily and the remainder of the pavilion will be open weekends for skate rentals and concessions. An afternoon of
sledding, skating, or using the miles of pathways through our parks for hiking, cross country skiing, or just a leisurely walk is the perfect
activity for a winter day, so come out and enjoy! Too chilly for outdoor walking? New this winter is a free program to walk in our gym on
selected days, see page 5 for details. Log your walking from December 1 –February 1 and enter a chance to win free tickets to our Craft
Beer Tasting event! See Page 13 for more information.
Century Park is expanding on the south end near the intersection of Hawthorn and Lakeview Parkways. Amenities to this parcel include
new paved paths, a restroom building, and multi-purpose open land with a park entry. The project is expected to conclude in spring
2019.
The Park District has many special events planned this winter beginning with a new event, Water Wonderland for families on December
21. This is an exclusive open swim with a winter theme. Santa will even stop by to get his feet wet! Our annual New Year’s Eve Family
Party is December 31. Music, open gym, pizza, an ice cream sundae bar, and a countdown to the New Year (at 6 pm)! The fun continues
for families at Winter Fest on January 12. Families will enjoy a live ice sculpting show, dog sled demonstrations, roasting marshmallows,
as well as ice skating and sledding. Just the Two of Us, a special evening of dancing for dads and daughters, is February 8, and our
6 th Annual Craft Beer Tasting event follows on March 2! Listen to live music while Chicago area breweries pour samples of their ales,
lagers, and stouts.
On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, I wish you a happy holiday season and an enjoyable winter in the parks.
Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency 2018-2023
Vernon Hills Park District is recognized as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency 2018-2023
by the Illinois Association of Park Districts and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association. The
two statewide associations administer the Illinois Distinguished Accreditation program with the
goal of improving the delivery of park and recreation services to Illinois residents. It is a voluntary,
comprehensive evaluation process to demonstrate that agencies have met state guidelines to provide
exceptional services to their community. Only 15% of Park Districts receive this accreditation.
Board Meetings
The District is governed by five elected Commissioners who set policy for the operation of the Park District. Park Board meetings
are held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm at the Sullivan Community Center, 635 N. Aspen, unless otherwise
posted. Please call or visit us online at www.vhparkdistrict.org to confirm the dates or times. Meetings are open to the public
and residents are invited to share comments or suggestions during the appropriate time as listed on the agenda.
have we seen an increase in our enrollment as a result, but it’s been a great way to get more
Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County
The Vernon Hills Park District is a cooperative member agency of the Special Recreation Association of Central
Lake County. SRACLC provides community based therapeutic recreation programs to people of all ages with
disabilities or special needs.
SRACLC is a cooperative effort of the Grayslake, Vernon Hills, and Mundelein Park Districts, and the Villages of
Hawthorn Woods, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, and Lincolnshire. Individuals residing within the boundaries of the
Member Agencies are considered “residents” of SRACLC and may utilize the services.
SRACLC offers more than 500 weekly programs, special events, and camps during the year. SRACLC also
recognizes that some people with disabilities prefer to participate in recreation programs within their own
Park District or Recreation Department. SRACLC can help you with this opportunity by providing an extra staff, if
deemed necessary, behavior management support, disability awareness training, and other adaptive services
necessary for safe and successful participation.
Contact the SRACLC office at (847) 816-4866 if you would like to receive a brochure or would like more
information. The SRACLC Administration building is located in Hartmann Park, 290 Oakwood Drive, Vernon Hills.
SRACLC needs your help. Program leaders, Day Camp counselors, volunteers, and part-time staff are needed to
assist individuals with special needs or disabilities. If you are interested in part-time work, please contact the
Sullivan Woods Seavey Ditch Clearing
In June, 2018, the District contracted with Integrated Lake Management (ILM) for water way
clearing in the Seavey Ditch at Sullivan Woods. The clearing began at Sugar Creek Park and extended
north to Hawthorn Club Park. ILM removed dams and debris that were blocking the main water way
that runs through Sullivan Woods. With the Seavey Ditch now cleared, water can freely flow inside
the ditch and erosion to neighboring areas has been reduced. Additionally, ILM cut and removed
potentially hazardous trees near the ditch. This practice enabled more sunlight to penetrate the
once shaded area giving birth to native species that have been dormant. Due to the clearing, an
increase in native plants, fish, and other aquatic life has been observed in areas of the ditch that
was once void of life.
Fruit Trees in the Parks
In 2016, a new concept of planting fruit trees throughout the parks was implemented into the
District’s Tree Replacement Plan. It began with Apple (Honeycrisp, Gala, Golden Delicious, Liberty &
Northern Spy), Paw Paw, and Persimmon trees in addition to Cherry (Bing and North Star) trees. The
results of these plantings became evident in 2018 when the Cherry trees fruited in early summer
and the Apple trees grew their first crops of fruit. As the apples began to ripen, the fruit steadily
disappeared from the public picking them, which was the District’s plan of having fresh fruit
available to anyone visiting District parks!
In fall 2018, Plum and Apricot trees were added in the parks. The District will not spray any fruit
trees enabling the fruit to be chemical free. Consequently, the fruit may experience some bugs. Each
year, the District will add more of each type of fruit tree, eventually having a wide variety of Apple,
Pear, Plum, Peach, Cherry, Persimmon and Paw Paw trees throughout the parks.
Pecan and Hybrid American Chestnut trees also have been planted in the parks in hopes the nuts
they produce can be enjoyed by the public as well.
Century Park Arboretum Island Tree Removal Project
In Fall, 2018, a large scale tree removal project was conducted on the Century Park Island. Austrian
Pine trees were heavily planted nearly 30 years ago when the town and District were developed.
The island had 60 Austrian Pines that were either dead or declining. Austrian Pines do not have a
long life span in this region due to the weather changes. They have difficulty supporting themselves
creating stress, making them vulnerable to parasites and pathogens. The Austrian Pine becomes
vulnerable to fungi that attack the new and old growth. The combination of these factors leads them
to turn brown and die quickly, within 2-3 weeks.
Due to the tree quantity and the restrictions of being on an island with limited access, the tree
removal project was beyond the capabilities of the District’s parks department. Utilizing a
contractor, the project consisted of cutting down the trees, hauling them off the island, grinding out
the stumps and over seeding the areas.
The District is working on a Tree Replacement Plan for the island.
Go Vernon Hills
#vhparks
Thank you for making GO Vernon Hills'
first summer great!
GO VERNON HILLS, presented by Vernon Hills Park District,
is a community walking movement designed to promote
community values of health and wellness through
activities, education, and community collaboration.
Vernon Hills Park District has partnered with the Lake
County Health Department on its county wide initiative
to improve the health of Lake County residents. Walking
is a gentle, low-impact exercise that is easy, free, and
accessible to everyone.
Live Well Lake County is promoting the simple act of
walking as a means to improve health. This movement
is in response to the U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H.
Murthy’s call to action at the National Park and Recreation
conference in September 2015. His challenge focuses on
the health benefits for people of all ages and stages of life
walking at least 30 minutes each day.
There are many benefits to walking 30 minutes every day.
Walking can help to prevent and reduce the risk of chronic
diseases, premature death, and supports positive mental
health.
In addition to wanting your presence at GO VERNON
HILLS events, step up and become a champion for this
movement! Being a champion is very easy. Spread the
word to others about joining the movement and become
a walk leader. Our goal is to have a champion attend
every GO VERNON HILLS walk and possibly lead walks in
your neighborhood. Please contact Cheryl Buhmann at
cherylb@vhparkdistrict.org to become a champion!
Lorena knew she wanted to work with children since she was
a child. She played “school” with her friends, making pretend
homework pages for them.
Her teaching career began as a play, art, and music teacher for
Gymboree Play & Music. Thereafter, she became an assistant
teacher at a Montessori school, while completing her Child
Development Associate Credential. Recently, she went back to school to earn a degree
in Early Childhood Education. In addition to her passion for children and teaching, she
has a strong love for the arts. When not in the classroom, you can find her singing or
performing improv comedy.
FAQs
Do preschoolers need to be potty trained?
Children in 2 Year Old Preschool do not need to be potty
trained, however instructors are not responsible for
changing diapers. Children in 3 and 4 Year Old Preschool
must be potty trained.
What is your discipline policy?
We use a brief time-out in the classroom. Our goal in using
this technique is to remove a child from the situation long
enough to allow him/her to regain control of him/herself.
Positive redirection is another core discipline procedure.
Appropriate boundaries and rules for behavior are
established early in the school year.
Can I observe a class in session?
Yes! Call Gail Herrmann at (847) 996-6808 to set up an
Swim Lessons
27
The goal of the Park District’s swim program is to
create a life-long interest in aquatics activities,
promote a healthy lifestyle, and improve a child’s
safety in the water. Lessons follow the American Red
Cross Learn-to-Swim guidelines. Taught by instructors
who are certified lifeguards, our lessons feature
progressive swimming instruction and practice of
water safety skills. Upon successful completion of
each level, swimmers will receive an American Red
Cross certificate.
registration
Select the Right Class
Before Class
Review the general descriptions. Choose the first class that lists a skill that your
child has not yet mastered.
First Day of Class
Children’s skills will be assessed on the first day of class to ensure that they are
placed in the proper level. Adjustments will be made if necessary. Swimming
requires motor coordination and practice to become proficient.
Keep in Mind
It is not uncommon to spend more than one session in a particular level. This
is especially true with levels 2, 3 and 4. Therefore, do not expect your child to
automatically advance to the next level at the end of a session.
Questions
If you are unsure about your child’s abilities or have questions about the different
courses or swim class policies, contact Robert Wood, Aquatic Supervisor at (847)
996-3488.
Parent/Tot Lessons (6 Months-4 Years)
You and your child will be exposed to water adjustment activities and
experience supported movements in a fun and enjoyable manner. This program
is designed to let children have fun in the water through games and activities
while developing swimming readiness. Only one child per adult will be
allowed. If more than one child is enrolled, a second adult must be present.
Online Registration
Online registration is available to anyone with a Vernon Hills Park District Online account. If you
do not have an Online account, one can be requested from our website by clicking on the green
Register Online button on the home page, or an Online Activation Form can be filled out at the
Sullivan Community Center or Lakeview Fitness. In addition to browsing and registering for
programs, online accounts allow users to re-print receipts and pay balances.
Online registration begins at 12:00 am. In-person begins with regular facility hours.
To receive resident rates, proof of residency must be provided on an annual basis, online or in
person.
Proof of Residency Requirements
Vernon Hills and District 73 residents must provide the
following proof of residency on an annual basis:
• State Photo ID or Drivers License, and
• Real Estate Tax Bill or current utility bill (no older than 60 days), or
Refunds
• A refund, minus a $5 service charge, is granted if the request is received at least 10 business
days before the start of the program. To avoid the service charge, you may apply the refund
toward another Park District program or accept a credit for future use.
• Refund requests received less than 10 days before the start of a program or after a program
has begun will be granted and pro-rated upon administrative approval. The $5 service charge
will apply.
• No refunds are issued once 50% of the program has been completed.
• Season passes are not refundable.
• Refunds are mailed to participants approximately 2-3 weeks after administrative approval is
received.
Refund Request forms are available at the Sullivan and Lakeview Centers and on our website.
Class Cancellations
The Park District makes every effort to avoid canceling classes. However, in order to operate
efficiently, programs must have a minimum number of registered participants 2-5 days before
class start date to avoid cancellation. If a program is canceled, participants are notified prior to the
start of the program and a full refund is issued.
Save a class! Register early!
Within 5 days of a class beginning, a decision
is made whether that class will run or not. All
classes must have a minimum number of participants
registered at this time or it will be canceled.
facilities are policed by the Vernon Hills Police Department. Police are radio dispatched
and may be summoned by calling (847) 362-4449.
Speakers Bureau
Local groups are encouraged to invite our staff to your meetings to speak about
Park District happenings. Contact Cheryl Buhmann at (847) 996-6933 or cherylb@
Americans With Disabilities
The Vernon Hills Park District will comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA),
which prohibits discrimination in the provision of programs, services, or activities to
individuals with disabilities. We invite any participant with a special need to contact our
staff or our SRA staff, upon registration, so that a smooth inclusion can occur. If you have
any questions regarding the Park District’s ADA policy, or believe you have been unfairly
discriminated against in the provision of programs, services, or activities of the Vernon
Hills Park District, please contact the District ADA Compliance Officer, Tom Ritter by mail
at 635 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills, IL 60061 or by telephone at 847-996-6802. For
the deaf or hearing-impaired, call the Illinois Relay Center voice only operator at (800)
526-0857.
Food Allergy Policy
The Park District will attempt to accommodate each program participant who has a
food allergy in order to provide the safest learning environment possible. A Food Allergy
Action Plan will be created by the District staff and parents and will identify operational
practices for parents, teachers, and children to follow. For a copy of the Food Allergy
Policy, contact Tom Ritter, Superintendent of Recreation, at (847) 996-6802.
No Smoking Policy
In addition to the Smoke Free Illinois Act, the entire Park District which includes all
facilities, buildings, parks, streets, paths, open space and all waters, is designated as
tobacco free.
Affiliations
network and coordinate positive youth development efforts in Vernon Hills and Hawthorn
School Districts.
IAPD - Illinois Association of Park Districts
NRPA – National Recreation and Park Association
SRACLC – Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County
Age Qualification
The District establishes appropriate age qualifications for each of its programs. Only the
program supervisor is authorized to make exceptions to these age ranges. Consideration
will only be given once all age-appropriate participants have had an opportunity to
register.
Payment Policy
Households with an unpaid balance will not be allowed to register for any Vernon Hills
Park District programs, activities, memberships, or rentals until the balance is paid in
full. For assistance with an unpaid balance contact the Business Operations Manager at
(847) 996-6803.
Resident/Non-Resident (NR) Fees
Vernon Hills residents significantly contribute to the operating budget of the Park District
by paying property taxes. Everyone who resides within the boundaries of the Park
District are eligible to receive resident discounted rates. Once per year, each Vernon
Hills household is required to show proof of residency in order to qualify for resident
rates. Families living within Hawthorn School District #73 are also eligible to receive
resident discounted rates for programs, Lakeview Fitness memberships, and Lakeview
Fitness daily passes. The only exceptions are facility rentals and daily admission to the
Family Aquatic Center. In addition, District 73 residents must wait until the non-resident
registration dates to register for programs. Non-resident fees are the second fees shown
in program descriptions. These rates are not discounted and are necessary in order to
ensure that non-resident participants contribute to the overall financing of the park
system on an equitable basis with residents.
Senior Citizen Discount
Senior discounts are available for individual passes and membership to our Fitness
Center for residents aged 62 & older. For all other programs and the Family Aquatic
Center, a 20% discount will be applied.
Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) Policy
A $25 service charge will be assessed on all checks returned due to non-sufficient funds.
Photo & Video Policy
The District occasionally takes photographs or video of participants for promoting/
advertising our programs, services, events, activities, and facilities in our brochures,
website or agency social media, and other promotional avenues. By registering for,
participating in or attending District programs, events, or other activities, the participant
(or parent/guardian of a minor participant) irrevocably agrees to the use and distribution
by the Park District of his or her image (or of his minor child/ward) in photographs,
video recordings, and any other electronic reproductions of such programs, events and
activities for any purpose without inspection or approval and without compensation,
rights to royalties or any other consideration now and in the future.
Residents are encouraged to submit photos for the Park District to use in its
informational materials. To submit a photo, email Cassidy Reinhard, Marketing
Coordinator, at cassidyr@vhparkdistrict.org.
Vandalism
Each year, vandalism costs the Park District thousands of dollars. Higher costs of
maintenance, repair and clean up of park areas can be avoided only with your help.
Should you see vandalism occurring, please call the Vernon Hills Police at (847) 362-4449.
Discipline
A positive approach is used regarding discipline. Staff periodically reviews rules with
participants during programs. If inappropriate or unacceptable behavior occurs, prompt
resolution will be sought and the Behavior Code of Conduct will be used as a guideline.
The Park District reserves the right to remove a participant whose actions endanger the
safety of himself or others.
Notary Public Services
Notary public services are available at the Sullivan Community Center. Please remember
that documents must be signed in the presence of the Notary Public.
