Elimelech’s Family Goes to Moab
1 In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a certain
man of Bethlehem in Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he and his wife and
two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi,
and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion; they were Ephrathites
from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained
there. 3 But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two
sons. 4 These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of
the other Ruth. When they had lived there about ten years, 5 both Mahlon and
Chilion also died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

6 Then she started to return with her daughters-in-law from the country of Moab,
for she had heard in the country of Moab that the Lord had considered his people
and given them food. 7 So she set out from the place where she had been living, she
and her two daughters-in-law, and they went on their way to go back to the land of
Judah. 8 But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back each of you to your
mother’s house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead
and with me. 9 The Lord grant that you may find security, each of you in the house
of your husband.” Then she kissed them, and they wept aloud. 10 They said to her,
“No, we will return with you to your people.” 11 But Naomi said, “Turn back, my
daughters, why will you go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb that they may
become your husbands? 12 Turn back, my daughters, go your way, for I am too old
to have a husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me, even if I should have a
husband tonight and bear sons, 13 would you then wait until they were grown?
Would you then refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, it has been far more
bitter for me than for you, because the hand of the Lord has turned against
me.” 14 Then they wept aloud again. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth
clung to her.
15 So she said, “See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her
gods; return after your sister-in-law.” 16 But Ruth said,
“Do not press me to leave you
or to turn back from following you!
Where you go, I will go;
where you lodge, I will lodge;
your people shall be my people,
and your God my God.
17 Where you die, I will die—
there will I be buried.
May the Lord do thus and so to me,
and more as well,
if even death parts me from you!”

The Wall of Honor
Hope’s Wall of Honor is an everlasting tribute to our Veterans. It was designed and
donated to Hope by Brother Sid Taylor, a US Marine, Vietnam combat veteran and
beloved member of Hope. It is a memorial tribute to commemorate the sacrifices our
veterans have made for our country. We are grateful to Sid and his family for blessing
us all with the beautiful Wall of Honor.

November is Lung and Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
Early Detection Can Improve Your Quality of Life
Cancer is the second leading cause of death for African Americans.
Join us Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the library as we support
those persons (including caregivers) going through the cancer experience.

What is Lung Cancer? Cancer that begins in the lungs. It is the leading cause of cancer deaths in
the United States, among both men and women.
Causes: Smoking causes the majority of lung cancers — both in smokers and in people exposed to
secondhand smoke. But, lung cancer also occurs in people who never smoked.
Symptoms: Lung cancer typically doesn't cause signs and symptoms in its earliest stages but in
later stages when the disease is advanced. This may include a new cough that doesn't go away,
changes in a chronic cough or "smoker's cough", coughing up blood (even a small amount),
shortness of breath, chest pain, wheezing, hoarseness, losing weight without trying, bone pain,
headache
What can you do to help yourself or others? Make an appointment with your doctor if you have
any signs or symptoms that worry you-be proactive—early detection is most curable!
Risk Factors: Smoking, second hand smoke, exposure to asbestos or other chemicals, radon gas,
family history, excessive alcohol use, smoking related lung diseases such as emphysema.
PREVENTION: Don't smoke, stop smoking, avoid secondhand smoke, test your home for radon,
avoid carcinogens at work, eat a diet full of fruits and vegetables, avoid taking large doses of
vitamins in pill form, drink alcohol in moderation, if at all, exercise.
Tests and Diagnosis: Your doctor can order a number of tests to look for cancerous cells and to
rule out other conditions and may recommend:
Imaging tests. An X-ray image of your lungs may reveal an abnormal mass or nodule. A CT scan
can reveal small lesions in your lungs that might not be detected on an X-ray.
Sputum cytology. If you have a cough and are producing sputum, looking at the sputum under the
microscope can sometimes reveal the presence of lung cancer cells.
Tissue sample (biopsy). A sample of abnormal cells may be removed in a biopsy

Missions' Food Pantry Stock Up
Hope, we need your help to stock our pantry to feed our neighbors in
need for the upcoming year. Your donations can be placed in the
Missions food barrels near the kitchen and Room 24 anytime during
the week.
The following items are of special need:
Cereal, canned tuna and salmon, canned fruits and
vegetables, canned soups, rice, beans,
mashed potatoes, boxed macaroni and cheese, pancake
mix, syrup, canned pasta meals, canned chili, peanut butter,
jelly and juice.
Last year Hope blessed approximately 400 families with a food
basket!
